Ah well that's the beauty of do it yourself, it's a pleasure actually doing it.  Pressure is not something I want although I am sure other members would relish it.

After my latest debacle with the shirt I attempted to make I too have realised that time pressure is not welcome in my work-room  :'(

Very professional looking .. We should put you in for GBSB 2020  ;) ;)
They don't allow five weeks for a project though  :D

I've decided to assign this to the UFO cupboard, it is stressing me out due to the adjustments required, and I wanted it made and ready to wear in a week's time for a 'do' I'm off to and so far I'm nowhere near.

I can't deal with the thing that I love doing for escapism giving me grief, there's too much else going on  :S  It'll get finished some time in the future, the new skills required will be good for me

@toileandtrouble Great stuff thanks for that I'll study them tomorrow. Don't know where you read that I won't have fabric for the yoke though, there was no mention of that?!  -<

I'll answer your questions but I've posted on here needing help with this project.

@toileandtrouble The yoke is a double yoke but the collar doesn't have a stand, it's like a peter pan collar.

@WildAtlanticWay Sorry for my sarcasm I do know what UFOs are, I was displaying blissful ignorance - I have a good few   :P

Oh dear, I'm feeling v out of my depth with this one. Re: previous post on the Sarah shirt toile, I have made a second toile with larger sleeves, having jiggled about with blending them into the armhole of the shirt, but it looks so wrong I'm wondering whether to carry on.  Thing is I don't know what to do with regard to fitting and alterating.

As it is right now, I can get the sleeve on but the shirt shoulder hangs below my shoulder, but I need the room in the back so I can stretch my arms forward.

What's the usual procedure with this kind of thing? Should I make a larger size shirt altogether and make adjustments on all of it? I need different size shirt, sleeve, yoke and the bl**dy lot, aaarrrrgh!

In case you can't tell I'm stressed

@WildAtlanticWay it might be a good one to take to your sewing class as I found it a little tricky in places, mainly the collar and placket. Forgive me, I don't know how advanced your skills are, but I've only attempted a couple of collars before and they didn't look very tidy, so I'm going to try very hard with this one  8).

As for UFOs I don't have any idea what you're talking about  :o

@sewmuchmore I've managed to get going on this shirt and the results so far: traced and cut the pattern to sz 14, the short sleeves to sz 16. Got one sleeve and cuff on but cannot get it far enough up my sausage arm - where did my slim toned biceps go?  :o  Also a little tight when I stretch forward.  On the other side without the sleeve it fits pretty much ok, therefore I would say on the whole it's true to size - my first By Hand London pattern. So back to the beginning with a lot of tweaking of the upper part of the shirt, after measuring the pattern sleeve I'm going to increase that by 3 sizes -looser better than tighter, right? The fabric I have in mind for this shirt is lawn and 'peachskin' polyester together - long story, we'll go into that later.

@BrendaP The pics on the pattern envelope show an inverted pleat and it definitely looks better this way
@sewmuchmore It's going ok so far, just got the yoke on and am about to do side seams. I'm not in a hurry so please be patient, plus I always have at least three things on the go when I'm in action  :sew: :sew: :sew:

@crafter, my shirt has an inverted box pleat, is that correct, where you don't see the actual 'boxing', if that makes sense..?

It's the Sarah shirt by By Hand London - free with the latest Simply Sewing mag

I'm constructing a shirt toile which has a pleat in the back piece just under the yoke. The pattern doesn't specify which side to insert the pleat (r/s or w/s) but I'll put it on the r/s anyway. It got me thinking that we always see men's shirts with the pleat the other way, anyone know why this is?  -<

@MelK hello and welcome, you joined on a special day  :loveit:

In my opinion (if it's total twaddle please feel free to correct me) any machine is a good one to start on, but it's worth getting one that isn't too basic as once you get rolling you'll probably want to upgrade anyway   :sew:

@Marniesews @sewingj I have only recently started using a rotary cutter, it misses, it drags, I feel there is a definite technique which I struggle to attain, I reckon I press too hard, tbh I don't really like them. Today I decided to cut a pattern out with scissors and was far more comfortable with them. I will persist with the rotary cutter as it is quicker for some stuff  ><

@Lilian Thanks, just in time, I was about to spend squillion pounds a metre elsewhere but 8 metres plus delivery for 14 quid will do nicely  :loveit:

Welcome. I inherited my mum-in-law's machine about four years ago, just in time as the v basic modern Singer I'd bought from Argos had started to creak! At first I was terrified to use it, it had a push pad with all manner of options but now I wouldn't want to be parted from it  :loveit:
