Title: Introducing Mr Twingo
Post by: Mr Twingo on June 05, 2018, 18:49:01 PM
Hello fellow SEWISTS (not sexists!)[apolgies],

I am Mr Twingo, and I've been sewing for many years. In my currently line up of machines is a Janome SMD 5018, Janome DX9300 overlocker, and an Elna eXperience 340. The SMD 5018 was bought to take the place of a 40 year old Brother industrial machine which had to be sold as my wife really didn't like it as it took up rather too much space in our bedroom.

Sewing on a domestic machine after using an industrial was frustrating; lack of speed, a minuscule bed to work on, no presser foot that exactly suits my style of sewing, restricted stitch length. I've grown used to it now, though, and made mown extension.

At present I am considering making a set of leather car seat covers for my car, and I'm hoping the SMD 5018 will be up to the job. I'm sure it will cope, and I'm not planning to sew huge quantities of the thicket leather.

I shan't ramble any longer. Nice to meet you all.

Mr Twingo

We do try not to be too sexist here so guessing your predictive text played up! Sounds like you have a good collection of machines and welcome on board.

Hello Mr Twingo, welcome.
We are not sexist on here just a quiet community who love sewing and other crafts and try to help each other whenever we can.  Are you seriously considering making leather car seats on a domestic machine, hope your machine has some serious punch.

Hello and welcome, Mr Twingo.  I have a smattering of male contributors*, but they tend to be infrequent commentators.  Hope you like or little place and that some of us can be of help, although I think you have far better skills than me.

*Nearly made a schoolgirl error.

What a terrible way to make an entrance! I apologise profusely for the autocorrect changing 'sewists' to 'sexists'. How do I redeem myself?!

Are you seriously considering making leather car seats on a domestic machine, hope your machine has some serious punch.

Yes, crazy as it may seem, I am entertaining the idea. Much as I would love a walking foot industrial machine to do the job, my wife would not be happy with me at all if I were to bring one home.

The Janome SMD 5018, from what I can tell, is identical to the Janome HD3000 sold in the USA. It has a cast aluminium frame, and metal gears, and is sold as a heavy duty machine that's ideal for those tougher fabrics. Whether it holds up to stitching several metres of two layers of leather + scrim foam is another matter.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I hope I'll be able to make a useful contribution to the forum.

Welcome Mr. Twingo! Always nice to have more male sewists around. (auto correct not enabled  ;))

Redemption? What, for bad proofreading? Providing us all with a chuckle? At worst it merits a  :fish: with a guppy. Feel better?

Welcome Mr Twingo. Don't worry about the entrance, there's worse things happen at sea, and a good chuckle is appreciated by everyone here.

Like the others, I'm looking forward to seeing the results of your labours.

A big Welcome from me too MT!  Look forward to seeing your progress on the Car Seat Covers.

If I remember correctly, Rolls Royce chose the Singer 201k to sew their original upholstery because of the stitch quality.  (I may have dreamt this....)

Yes, I believe you are correct.

I'm a fan of the older machines, and have my eyes on the lookout for a Jones zig zag. A two-tone blue one. I had one a few years ago, but sold it, which I now regret. Ah well.

Hi Mr Twingo - nice to meet you. You sound as though you'll fit in well on here, especially on the vintage machines part of the forum. I, too, will be interested to learn how you get on with your seat covers.  :)
