Title: Florals Rule contest - 1.05.-31.05.2019
Post by: Manuela on April 17, 2019, 09:04:38 AM
Welcome to the Florals Rule contest. It was a huge success last year, who doesn’t like a bit of florals for summer. I can see this as an annual thingy.

So, here are the rules

1. You shall make a minimum of one garment - it can be anything, top, dress, skirt, jumpsuit, trousers....
2. If you want to make more than one entry, feel free to do so, but submit them in separate posts
3. Please clearly indicate what pattern you used and what, if any, changes you made
4. You don't need to use a commercial pattern, self drafted is fine
5. Sewing starts on May 1st, you can prepare & fit the pattern and cut before that date
6. Sewing finishes on May 31st, please post pictures by June 7th
7. Please use the template below when you submit your entry post

(your name)'s Entry (indicate the number if you have more than one entry  ;))

What event/occasion is it for

Pattern used (commercial or self-drafted, anything goes)

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc.

Pictures (ideally included in the text, but I can do that for you if needed)

I am veh veh excited! Yesterday I formulated a plan of sorts for some 'odd' fabric that I bought because it was cheap...like you do. I might be able to enter this comp if I get a wriggle on.
@Pearl grab your kantha (buy a flowery one) and come on!!!! We're making a thing!

Thought this might be a possibility, @wrenkins , until I saw rule 6.  31st May?  As in, six weeks?   :S

I've hit a snag too @Pearl with my odd fabric. The stuff itself is 100% cotton but the twirly 'embroidery' bit is synthetic. It welded into a lump when I flame tested it. This means that the dying part of the plan will need some more thought.  8)
I've ordered a pattern that I've fancied for ages so I'll see what it looks like when it gets here before I commit. It's only 7 or 8 pieces. That's one piece a week. How hard can it be?   0_0  0_0  0_0  :S

Yay @Pearl, I am very much forward to your and @wrenkins’ adventures with dressmaking. I’ve been to the Darkside a few times, the first pieced block I even made was Hazel Hedgehog for a quilt and cushions for my little grand nephew

Ooh ooh can I bear to wait until May 1st to start on the Liberty print dress I posted about the Formal Wear board?

I have only drafted the corselette pattern so far, so quite possibly as long as drafting and toile-making is allowed ahead of time...

About the only thing I really am interested in at the moment is a jacket made with kanzashi flowers.  Not sure if this qualifies or not.

I also haven't been too interested in looking at my fabric, either.

I’m in for this one.

I’m making Butterick 6412 with an adaption to the skirt. I want it longer which means that I can’t get the semi circular skirt out of the fabric, so I’m using the width and making box pleats.

It’s cut out and the fitting done, so I will be ploughing ahead, but got to finish my posh frock first.

I’d need to see an image or sketch. The flowers would need to be big/dominant enough to count as floral fabric.

Ahh, looks like a no then. The flowers would be concentrated at the waistband and the rest of the fabric would be plain. Oh well, next time  :D

@b15erk I had the genius idea of buying plain ones and dying them but I'm too impatient...also I forgot and dyed my fabric yesterday.  >< I'll maybe just do a simpler cheaty version now.
The corduroy has come out a gorgeous shade of green  :loveit: but the flowers are still 5h1t brown,  :x
I have two jacket patterns and I intended to make a practice version of one or other with this fabric before investing more than 2/8d in posher stuff.
We'll see!  8)

Right! Here's (https://www.minervacrafts.com/shop/sewing/patterns/simplicity-8298-a-simplicity-ladies-sewing-pattern-8298-coats-jackets?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI653bwqSO4gIV1YjVCh3pcQrhEAQYAiABEgLV3vD_BwE) the pattern. I want to do a Mandarin/stand up collar but I want it right round to meet at the front. Not with a big gap because the front falls away...and that leads me to problem number two. I want the fronts to come round and meet...not swoop away on a curve.  :S
I want patch pockets, if any, and straight sleeves...not big bells. Apart from that the pattern is just right.  0_0 I had a quilted jacket similar to this years ago and I loved it so I'll just make it up as I go along.
This (https://www.minervacrafts.com/shop/fabric/dress-fabrics/12b-1001-embroidered-lurex-stretch-corduroy-dress-fabric-beige-per-metre) is the fabric before I dyed it and when my phone has sufficient charge I'll post an after. There is no lurex anywhere! The description is a lie!  ><
I'm off now to read up on binding seams...where's Esme's phone number?!?!?!?!

Mine is now cut out... again. After the disaster with the Joni dress I've just about managed to cut out a brand new bodice using the Lekala pattern and am going to try and frankenpattern them together. I really want to get this done, mainly as it's going to be one of my SWAKOP pieces too (is that allowed @Manuela ?)

Hoping I will have time to enter this contest, as I won't be able to start sewing until May 28th... but I have some fabric, intended for a TNT blouse, that I consider to be a floral. Well it has flowers and leaves, even if not the traditional "summertime floral".

It’s the Sew Over It vintage shirt dress again. This time I’ve squared off the lapels, omitted the button through skirt and put in a side zip.

Here’s my entry for the Floral Rules contest
Pattern is Sew Over It vintage shirt dress.
Altered the lapel shape from round to angular, added pockets, omitted the button through skirt, added a side zip and four inches in length. The pocket and zip were interesting to sew.

So best to submit your entries once you’ve taken the photos. You can post your progress updates here if you want to, and an official entry/submission just before the deadline.

@Helen M that’s what I mean. I work on the voting thread as the entries come in. Hence I would need to get back again and again to check whether there were modifications.
If I create the voting thread on the last day of submitting, I have to search pages and pages of posts to find the entries. Hence, best to take the pictures first and then submit an entry. If there is a time problem, just send me a pm and we work something out.

All week I've been looking at a piece of pinky, beigey pink floral fabric in the stash which would go nicely with my dark pink jeans and debating which blouse/top pattern to use, so this morning I cut out a dress from a length of glazed cotton bought for £2 from the craft club sales table.

It has big pink and yellow flowers with brown leaves so it is floral. :flower:  I'm using Simplicity 2247 (https://www.johnlewis.com/simplicity-amazing-fit-women%27s-dress-sewing-pattern-2247/p1173296?sku=233093037&s_kwcid=2dx92700044099018106&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclid=Cj0KCQjwoInnBRDDARIsANBVyAS7FrCS8J0O-MvXzTiv87tq5cscKBx94aQ6fKRYOCfuLr45e92_5tEaApI3EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds).

This evening I've got the princess panels constructed but the next step is the zip, so not sensible to start that late evening.

I've just done the zip, an invisible one which went in like a dream  0_0
I used the  :vintage: 201 with it's tiny zipper foot, pressed the zip first to coax the coils open and it just went in without any problem.  I might not bother again with the proper invisible zipper foot with the Husqvarna.

@BrendaP I keep on telling people, a zip or cording foot that goes close to the zipper coil is all one needs to install an invisible zipper.

My dress is now finished as per the pattern, but the neckline looks a bit plain.  Some years a go I made a sundress with a similar neckline and that had a knotted tie added to the front.  Based on that I've made up a similar knot.  Do I sew it on permanently or leave it plain?   Decisions.....

I like the knot. @BrendaP
You could tack it in place with a few hand stitches and remove later if you change your mind.
Title: Re: Florals Rule contest - 1.05.-31.05.2019
Post by: Greybird on May 22, 2019, 23:04:27 PM
I prefer it plain. The neckline is a lovely shape and the bow detracts from it. You can always wear a necklace with it.
Title: Re: Florals Rule contest - 1.05.-31.05.2019
Post by: indigotiger on May 23, 2019, 05:48:51 AM
Brenda - perhaps you could sew a pin back to the bow, and use it like a brooch, adding it to the dress when you wanted it, and if you were wearing the dress with a scarf or necklace, you could remove the bow?
※※※※※※

I went looking for my blue floral fabric and when I found it, lo and behold, I had already cut out the pattern pieces for a blouse, but never sewn it together! Whoo hoo!! After double checking the rules to make sure that a pre-cut-out fabric was okay to use, I now think that I might actually be able to complete a new blouse by the end of May...

This is my second entry for the Floral contest.

The pattern is Vogue 9232.
That fabric is vintage towelling.
A robe for the caravan... showering and drying is a pain in the shower block.
I shortened the bodice through the armsyce about an inch, did the matching alteration to the sleeve.
I used an open ended zip because I didn’t want to step in it or put it over my head.
I lengthened the short version by 4 inches.

Late as usual. This fabric was bought last year from TTC online. It has a lovely drape, is not quite see through but I think will need a lining. There's not enough to use any of the patterns I like but  it's been draped on Dolly for so long that I thought - yes! I can drape it on Dolly, tack & try on! So yesterday I took a deep breath and started.

Lachica's Entry
For a wedding on 9 June

Pattern used: none, first attempt at draping on the dress form

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc:
This was definitely an a***e about face construction method! The fabric (heavy Georgette from TTC) has a lovely drape. There was only just over a metre at 150 wide as it was a remnant. I didn't want a lot of seams as not enough fabric to pattern match. I'd held it up on myself & liked the cowl neck effect. I pinned it onto Dolly with the bottom of the fabric just below knee level (except Dolly doesn't have knees, more of this later) & fiddled with the neck drape until I liked what I saw, then pinned the drape in place.     [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]   Pattern placement: I moved the fabric to avoid a large flower on each boob. To get an asymmetric drape I made 5 pleats on one side from the waist up to underbust. The cowl was wrong side out at this point, there was one side seam as the fabric was wrapped round Dolly, but she doesn't have arms and I have 2.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  I tried it on and DH helpfully pointed out that my right arm was trapped inside. Also, the pleated fabric across my tummy was most unflattering. Removed pleats, stitched side seam.

Deep breath, cut off the top cowl fabric & joined it back on with right side to wrong side so cowl now had right side out. Also cut a slit to allow the trapped arm out. Rolled hems on armhole edges. It looked like a sack on Dolly. Pinched out a bust dart in the seam side, tacked. Pinched out 2 vertical front darts, tacked. Pinned shoulders, tried on. Tummy much better, would be better if I lost a stone >< made the darts a bit bigger, stitched. Each time it went on Dolly or on me, the cowl fell differently, so I hand stitched pleats on the shoulders along with a piece of ribbon with popper to attach to bra straps.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  This stabilised it, should have done this sooner. Finally hemmed tonight, it's a bit above my knees (because Dolly doesn't have any). I also made a waist slip to avoid static/knicker view.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Great looking dress, love your idea of draping it  :loveit:

ETA: Sorry, by trying to help, I embedded one of them, but somehow actually deleted 2 - could you please upload them again.

Hello! The weather is perfect for all things flowery, isn't it.

Here is my contribution - my flower show skirt I made from a Liberty wool (Thorpe Lilstone, in a now discontinued colour way). I got the fabric as a remnant at the very end of the last bolt in the Liberty store, and the lining fabric (light grey) and a navy zip came out of my stash.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

What event/occasion is it for

I wore it to the Chelsea Flower Show, and ended up quite literally in the show with my friend from America!
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Pattern used (commercial or self-drafted, anything goes)

The pattern is entirely self-drafted, very simple just tapering out my basic skirt block by about 3-4cm at the hem and adding a really simple bound waist band. I didn't want anything too complicated since the fabric itself is so pretty.

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc.
I wanted no back seam and a side zip, but because my piece of fabric was so small (only 75cm) I had to use a back seam anyway. I've put on a little weight since I made the block, so I moved it over to enlarge it, and toiled it using the lining. I wasn't quite as fat as i thought, so I then readjusted it a little narrower for the main fabric.

I've now been able to insert photos into text but the first 2 are still sideways on, even after rotating them before insertion. The good news is that the second 2 are the right way up. Wow some amazing garments!
I am very late to the party, but am thinking about sewing a simple something in floral so I can join in too.
I have some knit lace printed with flowers and butterflies, not sure if it wants to be a top or a cardigan....

PrendaP's Entry

What event/occasion is it for

The glorious warm summer that we are going to have this year.  :flower:

Pattern used
Simplicity 2247 (https://www.sewdirect.com/2247/)

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc.
The fabric was snaffled from the sales table at craft club for the extortionate price of £2.  It's a lightweight cotton sateen so the left-overs bits are safely in the P&Q boxes.

I made version B with the C cup option but as I often do I increased the flare of the skirt slightly, an inch or two on each panel, just tapered out by eye as I cut.  The invisible zip went in first attempt  0_0  and everything else was probably pretty much according to instructions though I didn't really look at them much.  The bow was an afterthought as the neckline looked a bit plain.

Brenda that is a very pretty dress and just right for our summer to come.  What a bargain you had, and yes wear it tomorrow to show your friends at craft club what you have made.  There cannot be many people who can say that their dress - brand new cost only £2.

Does this count as floral?  I've had it for ages and always thought of it as a floral, but now I look closely it's not that clear.

(To be honest I probably won't get it finished before midnight, but I thought I'd find out whether there was any point in trying!)

SewRuthieSews's Entry
Planned for a family get together at my brother's later in June. As it is daytime and fairly relaxed and I thought the floral lace felt summery and fresh.

I've used the 3/4 sleeve top and cardigan from New Look 6735.
I've not included the belt for the cardigan, and I've underlined the front of the top with some white mesh just to add a bit more coverage there. To do this I basted the two layers together and then treated as one during assembly.

I may update this post with a photo of me actually wearing the items.

Sorry people - I had a brainwave overnight and realised that what my dress needs is a nice frill around the bottom (it's for a two year old, not me!) so I guess I'm out.  I'll post it on my diary when it's done.

Good luck everyone else!

I'd hoped to have my blouse done in time, but alas inspiration intervened and I'm not quite there...  I decided, as the fabric is black flowers on a blue background, that adding black flat piping to the collar and button bands would be a good idea and help add some subtle definition to the garment. I really like the effect, but my poor blouse is not quite completed. If nothing else, the contest gave me the impetus to stitch up the fabric, and it will soon be in my wardrobe.

Holly Berry’s entry.

I’ve not made it for any specific event, although plan to wear it to our Sewing group afternoon tea.

The pattern is Butterick 6412. I changed the skirt from semi-circular to box pleats. The fabric was nice to sew, however the seams when pressed shortened the length by 3 cm, so I had to shorten the rest of the hem. I used bemberg lining, as recommended by a few on here, and that was beautiful to sew.

Swim suit cover up

Hot Patterns Peachy Beachy Poolside Cover-up http://contentm.mkt2178.com/lp/814/2043/HP_fabric.com_PEACHY_BEACHY_POOLSIDE_COVER_UP_MAY_2010.pdf?cm_re=SL1-_-crhdqtr-_-Beach%20Coverup

I used a white double gauze fabric with a black dandelion motive. The facings did not match up at shoulder seams, the pattern piece was a bit off so I made a new one. Only fiddly part was the casing which also joined the top and bottom pieces making it a bit more bulky. Markings on pattern were a bit sparse....

On reflection I think a contrast cording would look better and perhaps a black button, but I didn't fancy the colour bleeding when it was washed!  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I’ve just returned from holiday and the garment was well used. The button opening makes it easy to step into and pull up rather than have to pull over your head.
