Sewing Machines / Re: Machine for my Mum
« on: January 21, 2024, 16:23:10 PM »
Some very good advice here - if you go for a good retailer you'll cover your back in case of problems, and GUR, John Lewis and Sewing Machines Direct are all good.  There is a bad online retailer, but their name escapes me at the moment - if you mention them someone will say something!  Ebay and private sellers are risky, too.

I think @Acorn might be thinking of Coopers.

Thanks @Deafoldbat
I was confused and am sure the site was wrong but wondered if it meant the machine could not handle heavy stuff (did they have the headings the wrong way round).

Thanks for the offer @Clareew it would be good to see it and be able to ask questions of someone who has used it.

Don't suppose you know someone who would like a Janome 4950 QCP :P

I won't have time to do this until the weekend as this week is really busy, would that be OK?
I can PM my details if it is.

I'm in Faversham.
If you're looking for a straight stitch machine the Janome HD9 is lovely.
Will the Bernina go through thickish fabrics?
I looked it up online and was surprised to see it said it can handle heavyweight stuff but not good for cotton!

It does look so cute!
I keep thinking I would like to try a Bernina and this looks very nice.  I'm in Kent too!
I would have to sell one of mine if I got this though.
Hmm...

Sewing Machines / Re: Brother or Janome
« on: August 01, 2023, 13:29:56 PM »
I have a Brother Innovis 2200, combined machine, which I love using.  It is easy to use has put up with anything I've thrown at it.
For my 60th I treated myself to a new machine and got a Janome 4950 QCP, which I use but don't enjoy using like the Brother.
The needle threader on the Brother just works perfectly, the needle threader on the Janome, hardly ever works although everything else does.
As @Ohsewsimple says it really is personal preference and I wish I had not got the Janome without trying it out first.

@Celia I also love my HD9 but wish I had not bought my Janome Memory Craft Horizon 9450QCP.  It works fine, I just don't love it.

@Bill I hope you get your machine refunded and can find something you really love to use.  It makes such a difference.

Anyone remember Coopers?  Didn't they have "outlets" for various brands?  I hope this is not one of their incarnations.

Thanks for all your help, you really are a great bunch of people.
I've now managed to get it done, photo first, saved, uploaded to an online translator then printed!

@Ouryve I found out that iPhones will translate a photo too - who knew.  It goes back to original if I turn the phone though.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the replies.
I’ll look for the app that will translate from a photo. I really didn’t want to try and type it out in Google.

Mods, if this is not allowed please remove.
I've bought something which has come with instructions just in Japanese.
I've tried to find them in English on the web with no luck.
Would anyone on here be able to translate the 2 page leaftlet for me?  I'm happy to pay for it.

Thanks.

I used Odicoat on the washbags I made last year and it worked well.  I also lined them with PUL so waterproof inside too.
I put the fabric on tinfoil before coating so I could move it while drying and so it didn't seep through to the table.
Looking forward to seeing your finished bag.
