For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Knitting machine dodahs
« on: May 21, 2021, 17:04:08 PM »
Can anyone make use of these?

They came in a bag of assorted knitting bits someone gave me. The chances of my using my knitting machine anytime soon are pretty slim and in my efforts to eliminate excess stuff I want to get rid ASAP. If I pop them in a drawer they will still be there in 5 years time.

There is also a basic wool winder.

I only want postage costs.

Fun with Fabric / Sewing Neoprene
« on: May 11, 2021, 11:00:45 AM »
Has anybody any experience of sewing neoprene?

I am attempting to make DH a back support. There are times when he needs a bit of warmth and compression.

As he is of a ‘comfortable’ build   the ones I can buy come up a little short.

I’ve sourced the neoprene and some nice wide Velcro but am worried that sewing the Velcro to the neoprene might weaken it too much. I don’t want things popping when he tightens it.

A Good Yarn / Summer cardi
« on: April 21, 2021, 13:46:58 PM »
I need a lightweight summer cardi.

I have some lovely Rowan Creative Linen in the stash and so have spent several hours on Ravelry looking for something suitable and have done a couple of swatches.

I prefer patterns that are knitted in one piece where possible as I hate seaming and top down is good as I can juggle length.

I’ve ended up with this https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/amarelle-cardigan

I may be some time :faints: :faints:

A Good Yarn / Lengthening sleeves
« on: April 10, 2021, 13:07:10 PM »
I recently knit toning colour blocked jumpers for my GC.

Middle GS’s sleeves are too short and I want to pull them back past the ribbing and add some length.  They were knitted top down so there should be no problem.

Last  night I tried to unpick the binding off but didn’t get very far, I weave ends in VERY well and there was no way to disentangle them.

Is the best way just to cut a centimetre or so off the bottom and hope to pick the end up and unravel?  I have plenty of yarn so no problem there.

The Haberdashery / Zip holder thingy
« on: April 06, 2021, 20:52:05 PM »
I saw on a FB group a holder for zip pulls when using continuous zips.

I found an image and sent it to my SIL who has managed to produce one on his 3D printer and it works!

I know you can use a fork but I could never hold the fork and slider and zip tape all at once plus he can regard it as payment for all the babysitting.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

A Good Yarn / Sewing up knitteds
« on: February 02, 2021, 14:34:48 PM »
I was having a moan on the Today thread about seeing up jumpers for the GKs. I have three to do.

@Catllar suggests using the sewing machine or the O/L with the blade :scream:

Has anybody else done this?

It would make things a lot quicker and they are garments that will get a lot of use.

I can’t quite get my head round it it seems too easy.

Access All Accessories / Spencer Ogg wallet
« on: January 19, 2021, 17:36:15 PM »
I am working up to making something with my beautiful purple leather skin but I’m not quite there yet.

This is the first thing I’ve done with actual leather and I’m quite pleased.  It’s more use than the old suede skirt it started life as.

A Good Yarn / Colour blocked jumpers
« on: December 30, 2020, 12:07:15 PM »
I am in the process of making similar colour blocked jumpers for my 3 grandkids.

Number one just needs sewing together, number two is up to the neckband and I’m looking for yarn for number three.

All the jumpers have the same blue yarn at the bottom, a variegated stripe and then a toning top stripe.

I’m using Aran weight but I have a lovely variegated yarn in a perfect colour range for number three but it is chunky.

I was thinking if I went down a needle size for the variegated stripe I might just get away with it without throwing things out too much,

Am I mad?  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Access All Accessories / Spencer Ogg Wallet
« on: December 23, 2020, 11:13:02 AM »
I’m having a play with this wallet pattern.

I have a small leather skin I want to make one from but thought I should try it out first.

I was a bit worried when I finished it as I couldn’t press it properly due to using vinyl but DH suggested putting some weights on top for a few hours and that has really helped.

I need to thinks about jazzing the next one up a bit.

In the wardrobe / Sinclair Sandy
« on: November 28, 2020, 17:38:43 PM »
I know a few people bought this pattern recently, has anyone actually made it yet?

I bought it and have some very fine, drapery knit fabric that I hope to use.

I’ve seen a few versions on FB some better than others but there is nothing on PR, just wondering if I should do a toile but would prefer not to as I know Sinclair patterns fit me well.

A Good Yarn / Addi clicks
« on: October 19, 2020, 13:52:33 PM »
Does anybody use Addi clicks interchangeable needles?

I’ve been using Knitpro for some time but am fed up of them undoing, no matter how firmly I fit them originally.

I bought a really cheap set of bamboo non interchangeables to put me on but I do prefer interchangeables if possible.

I thought a set of new ones could go on my Christmas present list and I’ve just seen that they have an ingenious cable that inserts a lifeline if you need it.

Access All Accessories / Sewing with leather
« on: October 08, 2020, 15:37:40 PM »
My DD bought me a leather skin for my birthday, it’s beautifully soft and supple.

I want to eventually make a small handbag but will start on something smaller like a card wallet.

Most of the patterns I look at are for fabric, I assume I treat the leather as I would a piece of fabric but don’t need to consider grain etc.

Access All Accessories / Bag top stitching
« on: September 21, 2020, 21:46:25 PM »
I am attempting to top stitch around the top of a bag.

The bag is a mixture of fabric and faux leather panels.  When I sewed the two different fabrics together in the body of the bag I had no problems but when I try to top stitch the main bag and the lining I’m getting skipped stitches when I sew over the faux leather sections.

I am using a Teflon foot and have tried a microtex  needle as well as a standard needle.  I have tried sewing with the faux leather on top and with the lining on top but both ways give skipped stitches.

Does anybody have any ideas before I chuck it out of the window?

Giving up for tonight, off to watch something mindless and sulk.

Vintage Machines / Old Brother sewing machine
« on: September 10, 2020, 20:09:43 PM »
I’ve been after a machine for DD to use, no bells and whistles, just strong and solid.

I’ve just acquired this and all I can say is if she doesn’t want it I’m keeping it.

It’s got a manual and lots of feet, just got to hope it runs.

I hope her table is strong it weighs a ton.

I’m guessing it’s from the 60s but I can’t find a model number and the front of the manual is missing.

Is there anything special I need to know?

Dolls and Toys / Kitting out a baby doll
« on: August 30, 2020, 13:36:15 PM »
I am very excited :faints:

DD has just announced the GD is getting a dolly for her second birthday in late October.

They were always determined that she wouldn’t be dressed in pink and surrounded by unicorns and fluff but she has a very maternal attitude to her cuddly toys. She spends hours wrapping them up in various blankets, cuddling them and singing them to sleep.

I’m thinking I can make a fabric carrycot and bedding and very simple clothes. Not up to @Ann of course but something a toddler can manage.

Looking forward to this.
