Has anyone used Maraflex thread and, if so, would they recommend it?

Vintage Machines / Vintage Singer
« on: December 23, 2023, 14:11:44 PM »
When my hairdresser came earlier this week he asked me if I had any idea as to the value of his mum’s old Singer, he thinks it’s about 100 years old, has most if not all accessories including the manual, and is in working order.  Is it worth trying to sell and, if so, where as he doesn’t want to throw it out if it could be of use to someone.

I hope this post doesn’t contravene TSP rules as he has become a good friend over the years and I would like to help if possible.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Quilt Binding
« on: December 20, 2023, 11:23:16 AM »
I'm finally getting round to binding the quilt I made back in April but do I cut the binding strips lengthwise or crosswise or doesn't it matter?

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Overlocker problem
« on: June 02, 2023, 17:06:45 PM »
I had my overlocker repaired and serviced about 6/7 weeks ago and it was working perfectly when I got it back and I finished a couple of T-shirts.  I tried to use it today and found that it will not stitch correctly.  I have re-threaded it at least three times and it is still not working and I think it is a problem with the tensioning.  Has anyone any other suggestions as what the problem might be?

This is probably a silly question but I've booked a class for P & Q beginners and wonder if I need special machine needles for machine quilting or can I just use Universal needles?

Courses & Classes / Free Sashiko Class
« on: March 29, 2023, 16:19:52 PM »
I went to another free class today, this time on Sashiko which I really enjoyed, the history of it is interesting and I found the actual stitching very soothing to do.  I am booked on an Overlocker Progression class in May, again free with all materials supplied.

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Sewing table
« on: December 31, 2022, 15:58:08 PM »
I’m thinking about buying a folding sewing table as I don’t have the space for a permanent table and wonder if anyone has any advice/views.  I have looked at a Horn table and there is another which is similar to the Horn but a lot cheaper.

Good service from Fabworks as I ordered samples yesterday afternoon and they arrived this morning so all I have to do is choose what colours I want.

Your Favourite Suppliers / BST - fabric shop

Has anybody used this company either visiting or on line?  I want to make pyjama trousers for my OH and they seem to have a good selection of brushed cotton suitable for men.

Your Favourite Suppliers / English Couture Company
« on: April 02, 2022, 13:34:54 PM »
I ordered a silk organza pressing cloth late yesterday afternoon, it arrived in the post this morning, that's what I call good service.  I know they're are not the cheapest supplier but their products are good.  I know I could have bought the fabric a bit cheaper but this came with the edges overlocked so saves me doing it.

Another vote for Jaycotts excellent service.  I have just received a new foot which I ordered late Saturday and it was free postage.

I often sneak a look at the Dark Side and feel I must make the effort to join in but the book I have is not very helpful so can anyone recommend a good book for a beginner.

The Haberdashery / Hemostats
« on: June 05, 2021, 15:56:22 PM »
Help please - after looking at Kenneth King's tutorial on invisible zips I've decided I need a hemostat but can anyone recommend the best one for sewing as there seem to be so many on the market.

Your Favourite Suppliers / Schmetz needles

I can recommend The Ironing Press Company as I placed an order for needles Sunday evening not expecting to receive them until Thursday or Friday this week but they arrived yesterday and no postage charges.

Vintage Machines / Singer Touch & Sew 720
« on: October 21, 2020, 13:08:21 PM »
I inherited my MIL's machine and it's been in our loft for about ten years if not more.  I've had a look at it and it's in very poor condition, it works but sounds awful.  What I'm wondering is should I have it serviced and try to sell it, donate it to a local charity which repairs equipment and then sends it to third world countries, or just chuck it out.  I would be grateful for any advice on this.
