I've altered, traced and cut the fabric for a skirt today. I cut one out yesterday as well - different pattern.  I'm trying to have a few things cut out so that I can sew in small chunks of time: two skirts and a blouse so far.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Fabric for men's PJ's
« on: November 01, 2023, 13:58:22 PM »
I agree with what @Ouryve says.  I recently bought good quality cotton jersey for a couple of sets of PJs and I could definitely have bought RTW for less.  I'm just fussy about the length of the bottoms (I like them very long and to stay that way after tumble drying), plus I wanted to make PJs.  I've bought cheaper fabric for PJs in the past and really disliked the quality and feel.

I just use pencil and paper  :)

I would find it quite strange to sew without an extension table. My Pfaff is set into a Horn cabinet, which gives me plenty of room to lay my fabrics and my Bernina came with a good sized extension table. I also find the one on my Bernina overlocker invaluable. The only time I take them off for sewing is if I need to use the free-arm. I guess it's personal preference and what we get used to.

I was thinking about some sock knitting yesterday. I think I'll look for a new pattern though as I'm a bit bored with the one I normally use. I'm just sewing together a sweater that I've knitted for DGS. I also want to knit a couple of fair isle hats.

I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / Re: This is why we sew!

And I'm sure we all look at rtw clothes to see if pattern matching has been done correctly if at all.
Whenever I see somebody wearing a check or plaid I check out the pattern matching or lack thereof. There was a person on Pointless yesterday who makes her own clothes and she was wearing a plaid pinafore type dress, which she'd made. There was no pattern matching on the side seams though. Aargh!

Vintage Machines / Re: Guess what I have part II
« on: September 17, 2023, 17:10:39 PM »
All of the mechanisms that move against each other require oil in these machines.  Your manual will indicate those points.
The grease will just be a build up of the oil, dust and lint that have accumulated over the years.  I carefully used isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds for cleaning the grease out of the mechanisms on my vintage Singers.

I finished making some PJ s this afternoon and then had a quick look at the instructions for a new pattern: Cousette Harriette blouse. There are no finished garment sizes that I can see but it looks like a very loose fit. I'll be making a toile anyway.

@realale  I'm a big fan of tailors tacks. I was sewing this afternoon. I recut a PJ top that I'd started sewing yesterday. I unpicked it this morning and used a different pattern on the pieces to recut.  I've got it mostly put together and am much happier with it now.

A Good Yarn / Re: Drops Simplicity Cardigan

@Starryfish I find this method is very good for when I want a stretchy cast on. Specifically the tubular cast on at the bottom of the page.

I like that. Your button band stitch pick up is so neat. I read the double knitted band bit 3 times. It sounds intriguing. I shall look up the video.

I've ordered the pattern this afternoon. I don't really have any spare time atm but I'll let you know how I get on with it when I can.

@Helen M  I'm thinking about Autumn so I sat down and ordered a new pattern and just so it wouldn't feel lonely in the post I ordered fabric too. I ordered a few pieces of fabric at the weekend as well. Looking forward to some nice packages, though I haven't really got any spare time to do anything with it all for the next couple of weeks.
