Ooh look, squirrel.......
And another 5 squirrels
 :S

That almost made me spit my tea out! That is so funny, but so true.

I think we need a squirrel emoji!

@Ouryve Yes, Merchant and Mills patterns always look very practical. I'm hoping to make a real 'workwear' pair of jeans. I found this review on these jeans and they look great for gardening. Fingers crossed.  :thumb:

@Cazlyn The Morgan jeans look really nice too.

I think I'm going to make these jeans as a first pair.

My finished jeans are going to be 'gardening jeans' so even if they don't turn out perfect I'll still wear them!

This year I was thinking of doing some sort of make nine but based around choosing nine techniques to learn / practice.

Here’s my Nine.

Apply bias binding to a curve.
(Fibre Mood Molly Jacket. I must finish this flipping jacket!   :o)

Sew a notch collar (Jacket or coat)

Sew a camp collar (Shirt or shirt dress)

Fit trousers.

Sew a fly front. (jeans)

Cut out stretch fabric (t-shirts, bathing costume)

Sew elastic onto a garment (bathing costume)

Hem knitted fabric (tops)

Cut out and sew Charmeuse (slinky pair of PJs)

Don't know how many I'll get through but they're on my list!

I’m also going to make some relaxed fitting shirts/blouses (This bit doesn’t fit into my make nine! )

Edited for dodgy spelling.  :faints:

I hadn't seen the first one before either. That's brilliant. Thanks @SewRuthieSews.

I still haven't decided on a jeans pattern  ::thinks:: I need to start thinking or I'll be way behind everyone else.  :h2o:

@Sheilago It's looking good already.

I cut out the fabric for my outer Molly jacket today. It's navy corduroy and left a fine dust over everything! I think I spend more time dusting and hoovering than I did cutting out. :faints:

I've overlocked all of the edges so hopefully that will keep the blue dust at bay until I can start sewing it up this weekend.  :thumb:

@Ouryve Blummin heck missus, You're going to have a prefectly fitting pair of jeans all sewn up before I've even found a pattern for the sew along.

@Helen M not sewing up the crotch seam till you've checked the fit is a brilliant idea. I would never have thought of that.

@realale Shrinking patterns! Of course! There must be something in the air. I noticed my tape measure had shrunk since the last time I used it back in Nov 21!

@Flobear A teddy sounds lovely!

@Diane Is that your first sew of 2024? Congrats. :VV:

I've been faffing away this afternoon. I think I'm finally happy with the toile for the outer part of my jacket. I'll cut it out of corduroy tomorrow with extra wide seam allowances, just in case I'm not as happy with my updated pattern as I thought I was.

@Celia I think your new found zest for sewing proves you've done the right thing.

This is the jacket that was featured in Threads some time ago and I thought it was interesting how it was cut.

I think ZW is a really interesting concept.

OOOh this is interesting.
I'd expected nice photos of super sewing. Not an actual discussion on the merits of ZW

@Bodgeitandscarper and @Acorn I do agree with you in that most people who sew are probably very careful in how they cut out fabric and probably use the leftovers for bags, quilts, toys or toy stuffing. And also, if they're anything like me they're probably so invested in what they sew they're reluctant to throw it out so it'll be a long time before any of our lovelies end up in landfill!!!

On the previous chat on @smurf44 's diary I mentioned that during WW2 the government introduced 'austerity regulations' which limited things like the size of lapels or number of pockets. Also as clothes were rationed they introduced a quality standard mark to show the clothing was hard wearing and would last. Effective ways to reduce fabric consumption.

@Tamnymore I think if the designer has deliberately tried to use less fabric then this is also a good thing. I hadn't realised about deadstock being a problem. I thought by buying/using it we were reducing waste. This is definitely something I'll think twice about in the future.

I still want to try a zero waste pattern. As much for the novelty factor as the environmental element.  :o I think for lounging around the house some of the tops look really comfy.

@So Chic I think some ZW patterns probably look better than others. I also think the amount of drape in the fabric is crucial!

If / when I get round to making a ZW top I'll post a photo so you can have a good laugh smile approvingly.

@Ouryve Nowt wrong with Yorkshire blood.

I know other people on TSP have made / are in the process of making / want to make ZW garments so thought it might me nice to start a thread.

I’ve been looking at Birgitta Helmersson’s blog which has some interesting tutorials on how to sew her patterns.

I’d like to make view 1 and view 3 of this pattern

I’ve put on it my list of things I’d like to sew in 2024.   :)

OOOps. Forgot to add if you sign up for the Closet Core newsletter then you can download an e-book which gives more information on fitting jeans.

Jeans are definitely more complicated than the pj bottoms I'm used to making!  :o
