Technical Help / Re: Ideas for saving my shorts?
« on: February 01, 2021, 17:38:00 PM »
Loving the fabric but it does seem quite a loose weave (

then again what the hell do I know??? Scurries back to the Darkside)

It probably wasn't the ideal choice for the garment but it's sooooo comfy!

Technical Help / Ideas for saving my shorts?
« on: February 01, 2021, 15:35:38 PM »
Hello!

I made my first shorts last summer, with waistband and fly and I was super happy with them. I used a lovely soft chambery fabric.

After a few wears, the fabric send to be deteriorating at the back darts - the stitches seem to be straining against the weave of the fabric and I think the back seam will follow   :boohoo:

I would love an opinion on how to fix and also should I have done something different?

I used a size 2 straight stitch and I thought this fabric was strong despite its soft texture. The pinkish line you can see was my dart line

Technical Help / Re: Pattern matching...with a bust dart
« on: August 20, 2019, 11:00:14 AM »
Hi Wrenkins

I spent so much time on getting the shoulders to look nice and was stumped at one point when my test sew was shorter on the back (because I lost 5cm on the front with the same bust dart!) but this still didn't occur to me!

Hi Coffeeandcake,
The bands are really wide, about 18 cm so I think it will be seen although as Wrenkins said, matching from the hem up would have been better

I've got nothing to lose, I am going to cut it and patch it together and if it looks terrible I will make a plain back.

And there I was thinking for once I had sewn everything right first time!

I am guessing now you are meant to pattern match from bust dart down. I watched a number of videos and tutorials on tricks to pattern match and none of them mentioned it  :[

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Necchi Overlocker - one to avoid
« on: August 19, 2019, 22:01:13 PM »
I second this, I bought a Necchi overlocker because it had a coverstitch. Had great trouble threading it and the technical help at the company I bought it from said lots had been returned. Then it misaligned so every needle broke. Sent back for repair then the motor ceased. All in all I used it for about 50 stitches.

Technical Help / Pattern matching...with a bust dart
« on: August 19, 2019, 21:53:07 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have drafted my first pattern for a shift dress with a bust dart on the front, back darts on the back. Also the first time I have used a pattern to be matched - very wide bands. I took ages to cut the back and front perfectly, sewn the shoulders with a combined facing then came to do the sides and...of course the bust dart causes the stripes below the bust to not line up, dur.

Thinking...could I cut the back piece and sew it back together taking out the 5cm so the front and back now match?

Or sew a horizontal fold all the way along the back to the same effect

Will it look weird?

(I will unpick my back darts first and redo them)

Any suggestions?

Will post a photo tomorrow if what I say is not clear

Patterns Discussion / Re: Oooooo bitch!

I started sewing garments from her first book and I thought it was well explained. I have also made the Bettine and Francoise dress which with adjustments, came really well.

But...since those releases I have found the patterns too geared towards beginners so a lack of shaping, zips etc which then results in a pretty average looking garment.

As for sizing, I would say they are on the smaller size which might be why they work for me although the size 6/8 was nearly 20 cm too big across my back

Hello and thanks for letting me join :)

I am a self-taught sewer using my mum's 1984 Brother sewing machine which I love. I started out making home furnishings from recycled fabrics for our house renovation in France about 6 years ago.  I decided to try garment making a few years back when I basically had a melt down in a high street shop changing room because nothing fit!

I have since learnt that of course patterns don't fit as standard either and have become quite fascinated by garment construction and now dabbling with pattern drafting. I also have a HUGE fabric stash which my husband encourages to grow by taking me to fabulous fabric shops whenever we visit cities and I am determined to turn it into a fabulous wardrobe of creations.

Having stalked this forum for a while, just reading and learning, I thought it's about time I join.

Currently, I am making a simple shift dress from my first pattern draft in a one off piece of fabric from Sri Lanka which I am procrastinating cutting! And just about to start my second knitting project ( first one took 10 months...)

Thanks for having me  :sew: :meow: :)
