Title: Competition to celebrate the Grand Opening
Post by: BrendaP on March 01, 2017, 09:39:16 AM
To Celebrate the grand opening of The Sewing Place I would like to run a little competition and to winner I will send three Fat Quarters of fabric in the colours of your choice.

All you have to do to enter is tell me how many words (English Language) you can make from the letters.
P A T C H W O R K

Proper nouns (names which usually have a capital letter) not allowed.

Don't post your words, just the number.  If you post and then think of a few more you can enter again - and again.

Closing date will be midday on Saturday 4th March after which I will ask the poster of the highest number to post their words here.  In the case of that entry containing a lot of non acceptable words I might need to ask the poster of the second highest number to post their words.

I will be guided by the Oxford English Dictionary but the final decision will be mine.

I do the wordwheel in the paper in the morning and they don't allow
slang,
foreign words (even if in common use in UK)
or three letter words...

What is the minimum number of letters each word should have????

I hope it's 2 or I'm sunk  ;D ;D

Are they "patch" and "work"?
Title: Re: Competition to celebrate the Grand Opening
Post by: BrendaP on March 01, 2017, 15:42:15 PM
Yes, it's based on the pinwheel in some newspapers - but I haven't said that any particular letter has to be used.

No minimum number, though I expect you all to find patch, work and patchwork.  Maximum is however many you can find.

I have a concise OED which is about 20 years old and I will go by that although if you find any modern technological words I will make an effort check them elsewhere.   There's slang and slang, some words are in the dictionary, some aren't.  There's one which I found which has two altrnative spellings, I will allow both spellings so if you find that one and include both spellings it will count as two words.  No foreign words or foreign spellings which aren't in the OED, and no abbrviations.

Trying not to make rude words.

If a rude word is in the OED you can use it.

I think there is only one - and that's just mildy rude; I'm pretty sure I saw it several times on the old forum with no comments or moderation needed.

Thanks Imi, no she is now my main machine, purchased a few weeks ago.  I made the blouse I posted over on Survivors with it as a trial.  It's a 201-2 (potted motor) and runs like a dream.  I bought it to replace one that my ex hubby dropped down the stairs  :D  Keeping my others for the decorative and zigzag stitches.

So far I have reached over 65 but might have repeated some on the list I am making!   Dipping in every now and then too.  On the joys of being retired!

Loving the challenge ( but should I be sewing instead?)

I didn't say in the rules but you can only use each letter once - the same as with the previously mentioned newspaper word wheels.

I'm at 113 and I've gone cross-eyed. Have no access to dictionary either. Think all the words are English, I weeded out the obvious french ones that crept in! (and the duplicates)

There are four of you who have found more than 100 words - very impressive totals as I only found 73 :|

So please would Sandra, Catlar, Bodgitandscarper and Ploshkin each send me a PM containing your lists of words for checking.

I do hope you have all really been much better than me and that there aren't too many foreign/duplicated or otherwise disallowed words in your lists.

All four of the 100+ entries have been recieved, checked, re-checked and I've gone boggle-eyed 8)
Had to leave it until this evening to do all the checking because I had a couple or three glasses of medicine with lunch :toast: :toast:

I have been generous in that I've allowed words in my elderly Concise OED and words in the dictionary on my computer (a Mac), there are several in the computer dictionary which are not in the OED.

Sandra submitted 111 words but several were disallowed:
chark
OK - capitals
thrack
thrap
thro - it's an abbreviation of through
toc - capitals for Train Operating Company
tock - part of tick-tock with a hyphen
total = 104

Ploshkin submitted 105 words
copra - disallowed
Total = 104

Catlar submitted 110 words
thraw - disallowed
ratch - disallowed
tock - disallowed , as above
pack was duplicated
Total = 106

and the winner is

Bodgitandscarper who submitted 109 words
All were allowed but pa was duplicated
Total = 108

Bodgit, please PM me with your postal address and colour choice for your fat quarters prize.
