What do you reckon - think I can zig zag it closed and hope the binding covers my sin?

Yup and your binding can be any width you want,

1/4" from edge ???

PAH! try 1/2" ... just allow for the extra when cutting!

I actually labelled a block, made with my SIL, Made with (my) Blood, (her) Sweat and (both of ours) Tears !!!
