Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Re: Hen's Hideout...or sewing room.
« on: November 06, 2023, 21:08:30 PM »
That's a beautiful room, I so wish I could keep mine so clear like that. My main problems are that my DH is a hoarder, not of useful stuff just crap (I'm very sorry to say he's got dementia)! I get sick of seeing it and the clutter it creates so I dump everything in there so I can slowly sneak it out (he doesnt go in there, he accepts it's my space). The other problem is I collect sewing machines and I've got too many I do use them all when I get chance to get in there so it's stuff I do use not rubbish.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Where are you all buying your fabric?
« on: November 01, 2023, 19:44:26 PM »
@Hideout Hen. At the moment I'm not buying fabric as yet again my sewing room is full of the crap D/H has been hoarding and I can't get in there for now, I'm just waiting my chance to sneak it out before he see's what I've been doing . Previous to that 95% of the fabric I've purchased during the last 8 or 9 years has been purchased online as my nearest shop now is around a 70 mile trip.
I've used quite a lot of on-line suppliers, too many to mention here but there are lots of names in the "favourite suppliers" section in the index here. I can't say I've ever really been disappointed with any of them, other than sometimes a colour's not been quite as I expected, a number of places will send you samples for a small fee.

Sewing Machines / Re: Getting on my own nerves!
« on: October 30, 2023, 19:25:47 PM »
That would be awesome, the trouble is I'd probably need an entire room to fit it in I'd specify so many functions plus it'd have to be metal bodied and mechanical not computer controlled so it'd be pretty heavy too  :scream:, the muscle I'd need to move it would be extremely useful too

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could order a custom-made machine with all the features we want and eliminating the things we don’t need? I suppose that could work for anything, even spouses.

In the wardrobe / Re: Bartacks made with straight stitch?
« on: September 29, 2023, 21:41:47 PM »
@kowgiirl.up, it's an ancient Singer 660. My uncle took me on as an apprentice and bought it second hand for me to learn on, after I qualified he wanted to get rid of it and get me a more modern one but I was heartbroken so he gave in and let me continue using it, when he retired and closed the shop he gave the machine.
I loved it when I was learning and I still love it now, although it's got no bells and whistles but out of all my machines (and I've got quite a few) it's my absolute favourite it does what I ask it to and hasn't let me down although it's grumbled a couple of times.
If you really want one that bad, it's highly unlikely you'll never regret investing in one. The speed that one of mine can go at frightened the life out of me at first but you will get used to it and you'll probably find you can control it a lot better than the more modern domestic machines 👍.

Occasionally when I've been sewing with several thicknesses of denim and it comes to trying to stitch belt loops on the waistband i know full well my zig zag machines haven't got enough punch to go through all the layers I cheat and use a straight stitch back and forth. I'm lucky and have an industrial machine (straight stitch only), I never tuck my tops and jumpers etc in so only I know I've cheated, well you do now  they do look ok so I don't suppose they'd embarrass me if I did tuck my tops in.

Word of warning about the overlocker thread, I tried it and don't rate it at all to be honest. Unless it was a bad batch I got I found it frayed as it was going through the needles, new needles and Guttermans was fine going through the same set of needles. I thought I'd try Lidl's as most of the bits and bobs I've had from them have been ok plus the price of the thread was attractive in comparison but for me it was false economy. I did try it a few years ago (pre lockdowns) and to be fair the quality may have improved since then.

I love bright red and would love something in cord but with a blonde dog that's constantly moulting sadly I couldn't get away with it. Can we see  :pics: when they're finished, I'll be green with envy but in a nice way  :).

In the wardrobe / Re: What are your Five Essential Handmade items?
« on: August 19, 2023, 17:36:00 PM »
1) Absolutely essential is the very strong dog lead I made with several handles at various stages to keep my young dog from pouncing on strangers and other dogs, not nastily, he just wants to play with anything that moves.
2) The comfortable elasticated waist trousers I made to wear around the house but oh boy do they look scruffy now. 1 item that'll definitely be worn until they drop to bits  :embarrassed:.
3) My smart trousers (several pairs).
4) My fleecy winter dressing gown.
5) The summer dressing gown, not yet made but fabric purchased, that will definitely become essential eventually.
