Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hello from Ireland
« on: January 23, 2020, 09:53:19 AM »
Welcome @Irishseahorse

Yay, another Irish TSP-er who’s also has pets.  :meow: :woof: :D

I’m a blow-in here on the west coast in county cark.
According to the Irish Times, West Cork has the highest proportion of Brits who are living in Ireland. Wonder if we’ll expand our numbers even more after this month.  :D

The Show Must Go On / Re: Dancing on Ice - sparkle on ice!
« on: January 07, 2020, 09:39:04 AM »
Some excellent skating for the first week and some lovely skating costumes although none with more sparkle than Jayne's dress.  Any inspiration there for you?

I love watching Dancing on Ice. I think it’s because I’ve followed Jayne & Chris since they started to become well known when I lived in Notts, just before they won the Europeans. I haven’t watched this week’s episode yet but it’s recorded.
When I do get around to watching it, I will try to pay more attention to the costumes.

I also admire anyone who’s learning to skate when they’re over 40. They’re very brave in my view. The falling over would shock me too much, I think.  :|

Sadly, despite a few attempts, I can’t get into Strictly. I find the whole programme quite annoying but I’m not really sure why as I love watching dancing at the theatre, a traditional ballet or modern dance performance.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Can someone check my pattern for me please?

No such luxury unfortunately. As usual I’ll probably do my usual of improvise a solution somehow

Initially, I used a red sharpie pen and drew a line down the centre of the clear plastic foot that made it easier to follow and match up to any lines you’re following on the fabric. Obviously, this probably won’t work if you’ve got a metal foot though.

The Haberdashery / Too much choice - thread!
« on: January 03, 2020, 12:15:05 PM »
Are there some basic rules about threads? I’ve tried searching but I think I’m using the wrong terms, possibly?

I’d bought some embroidery threads (pretty colours!) and used them to pep up my basic mug mats etc. that I made for Xmas presents but I found them breaking constantly on my more expensive Juki although they sewed ok on my much cheaper Brother machine. I used the same thread for the bobbin as I used on the top, before anyone asks.  :)

It got me thinking and I wondered if there is a useful guide someone can point me too that explains about different types of threads and their uses?

I was reading some US pages and they included various brandnames of thread (many I’d never heard of) and disparaging Gütermann, which I thought was a top brand, plus used a numbering system that I’ve not seen either

It’s all rather confusing... :S

Sewing Machines / Re: Giving beginner sewing lessons

I haven’t taught anyone to sew but ideas you might like to consider are:

1. Sewing a simple envelope cushion cover
2. Make an apron. Cut out a simple apron pattern and hem the edges. Attach a central pocket and attach the straps - neck strap and ties.
3. Make a bowl cozy or mug rug. Learning about using wadding/interfacing and simple quilting stitches.
4. Sew a simple elasticated skirt or trousers from a pattern.

Madetosew on YouTube is very good. She demonstrates and explains the steps well.

Current Projects / Re: Christmas tree skirt

That’s absolutely gorgeous. And why not with an artificial tree?  ;)

Did you follow a pattern?
I’d love to make something like that but I’d need detailed instructions as I’m not experienced enough to wing it by myself.

Each item on its own looks fabulous but the two together look really special.

In the wardrobe / Re: Christmassy garment needed fast!
« on: December 11, 2019, 09:23:19 AM »
School said the same thing regarding my son’s nativity play and his last Christmas jumper is far too small so I sewed some battery operated lights onto his black sweatshirt and a little pocket on the inside to hold the battery compartment.
This was taken last night at a distance but you can see him quite clearly.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Re: FOR SALE 10 Bobbins
« on: November 25, 2019, 09:27:19 AM »
My brother bobbins are measured in mm not inches.
11.5mm height.

Could you re-do the pics using a metric tape measure?

Yes, I had trouble getting in using Safari on my iPad but I went ahead anyway.
Hopefully, someone will resolve this soon.

@wrenkins  how do you bookmark a topic please? I’m always losing my place and can’t remember where I read a topic or post. It’s very frustrating at times.

Also, just remembered, what about a competition that involves making hats and gloves type accessories?

I’ve only made a basic bucket hat so far, but I’m interested in making a fleece type winter hat.

I really enjoyed the bag competition and seeing the creativity of the other entrants.

Not sure if I’m repeating what’s already been said but...

I’d like something like accessories (?) that’s not garment making, so similar to the mugrug but I don’t know if that’s a darkside thing?

Also, something made using freehand machine stitching? I was just reading the thread posted by @Sara-S and found it very inspiring.

Also, an upcycle/recycle competition. I picked up a child’s flowery denim skirt in a charity shop that I’d like to make into a bag but I haven’t decided on the design yet. It was the brightly coloured large buttons that attracted me but then I thought maybe I could do something with the skirt rather than just cutting off the buttons.
