In the wardrobe / Waist belt with pockets?
« on: August 22, 2023, 13:49:39 PM »
So I am still in search of pockets, and given giant shirt pockets turned out not that practical I'm now thinking about waist belt with pockets, something I am sure @realale did at some point.

Has anyone tried one of these, and how did you find it?
I might even have a pattern for something somewhere (off to look in pattern boxes)

In the wardrobe / Sewing with knit fabrics - for beginners
« on: August 15, 2023, 13:52:53 PM »
Hiya, i was going to do a post but then thought I'd ask the oracle.  T shirt wise, what would be the best fabric to use for it in your opinion? i havent work with stretch fabrics so im a bit boggled eyed !!

@smurf44 this felt like something which needed a new topic!

Generally I find that traditional cotton t-shirt fabric with minimal stretch is quite hard to get a nice neckline, and very thin viscose/rayon is rather awkward the other way - too thin and slides around.
So I choose knits which are cotton or viscose mixed in with elastane (lycra) and sometimes polyester. I find the 100% polyester knits too sweaty.
Then in terms of construction I sew the seam first on the sewing machine, pulling on the knit slightly but using a straight stitch. (Most places tell you to use a zig zag but I don't like the way the seams look). I then put that seam through the overlocker.
I finish hems with a coverhem machine, but you can get a very similar look with a twin needle on a normal sewing machine, though takes a bit of practice to use.

A good pattern to start with would be the Closet Core Core Tee Shirt pattern, because its free (except the cost of printing it out).

In the wardrobe / Café au Lait Knit Top - embellish or leave as is?
« on: July 27, 2023, 10:43:22 AM »
I adapted my self drafted (traced from RTW) dropped shoulder knit top pattern to have a slightly less dropped shoulder and a wider sleeve so that I can use it to recut oversized men's tees to a more flattering shape.
(All the normal set in sleeve patterns wouldn't fit on due to the smaller armhole clashing).
To check this would work, I then cut out and sewed it up in a beige knit.

I tried it on at the fit is fine (with the expected drag lines from a dolman sleeve).

Left as it is its a very versatile item for my capsule travel wardrobe - works with everything, can be easily layered, but it is very plain.

At the moment the side seams are only machine tacked together, as I was undecided about some sort of embellishment, which would be easier to do if the front could be laid flat.

Options going through my mind are

1. Self fabric embellishment e.g. lines of gathered fabric

2. Machine embroidery - but the fabric is too thin and would need excessive stabilisation.

3. Hand embroidery e.g. simple design in embroidery floss.

4. Design with fabric paint e.g. stencilled butterfly or other motif done with fabric paint.

5. Beaded embellishment - though needs a firm foundation and may not be very practical for travel.

6. Applique

Please do vote and or comment. Thanks.

Alterations Advice Please / Full bust alterations
« on: June 16, 2023, 17:20:14 PM »
I've started doing some sewing with my young friend C. She wants to sew things herself as well.
I made her some PJ pants which she's been wearing, she copied a skirt she likes and I copied a dress she likes.

We've got a few patterns (mostly hers) which she likes but won't fit as they are.
The first challenge I'm unsure about is a Full Bust Adjustment, as I've never ever needed to do one for myself.
I have loads of fitting books though (from my quest to fit things to me) so I'm going to be reading up on it as best I can.
And I have a pile of plain cotton fabric to make some toiles from.

We are starting with Simplicity 9473, hoping to do the dress and jacket.

As this has princess seams I hope it'll help me do the alterations. I'm starting with the jacket. Below is the diag from the book on what to do....

In the wardrobe / Uses for long lengths of fabric (6 to 10 metres)
« on: April 12, 2023, 10:10:18 AM »
Over on my diary thread I have been detailing all the teal things I've been sewing, including the last few which came from a 6 or 7 metre length of fabric.

@SewRuthieSews How much of the fabric did you have?
I have quite a few lots of 10 metres that I know I will not use all of and am considering cutting in half and donating the rest to charity but never know if I would regret it.  Some I bought to make specific Victorian gowns and never made them.
Wondering if you think it was worth making so many items from one fabric or did you get bored with it?

I thought this deserved its own topic, so others could give feedback to Bumblebuncher too.

Patterns Discussion / Felix Raglan Sleeve Top
« on: April 03, 2023, 14:51:52 PM »
Today I've spent some time sorting through the random bits of pattern pieces and tracings, rcycling some, and trying to pair the others up.
Sort of like the pattern equivalent of the 'odd socks box'. Its been quite bewildering.

Along the way I found 4 traced off pieces for something I have labelled as "Felix". It seems to be a front, back, sleeve and neckband for a raglan sweatshirt or knit top of some sort.
I have apparently traced out a 'Size 4' but for myself so must equate to a size 18.
All I can think is that I've traced it from a magazine or book though I didn't write which one.

Any thoughts?

In the wardrobe / Chanel Style jacket
« on: March 29, 2023, 23:11:42 PM »
Anyone here ever made a Chanel Style jacket?

I've been watching Lorna Knight's "The Iconic Tweed Jacket" on Craftsy.

Thinking I 'could' do that but would I want to? I have a piece of tweedy fabric, but might do speed tailoring instead!
