Coverstitchers-  when they are good they are very very good and when they are bad they are horrid.
Sorry for the flippancy, I had a Janome one and I didn't like it's inconsistent results.

So this year I bought a Brother CV3550. On woven fabrics it is superb, but is very picky about jersey. Unfortunately jersey is practically the only thing I use it for, hemming T shirts! I have come to the conclusion that washaway stabiliser under the fabric is the only way for good results on thinner jersey. Even so I have to test each time, if it decides to eat the fabric that means time spent taking the foot off and poking about to get it out.

I would take some fabric along to try out. They are nice machines but harder to learn than overlockers or sewing machines. What do you want to use it for? Twin seams on jeans, hemming T shirts or sewing athleisure?

I don't sew much stretch fabric but would like to. I am hoping to use it for some decoration and mainly on woven fabric.  I wonder if fine tissue paper would work underneath for jersey fabric?

Thank you @Kad I have just asked some questions and this is her reply

"Hi. I’ve had it almost 5 years. I run sewing retreats and bought it for that but no one’s wanted to borrow it, so I’ve used it myself a few times but it’s just taking up space.

There aren’t any accessories apart from a flimsy cover."

Sounds ok to me.  I might try to get the price down.

Thanks @Ohsewsimple I will be in that area on Wednesday, and I'm sure she will let me see it in action or test it.  She sounds genuine.  I have never used a coverstitch so it will be new to me.  I don't know what I should look out for.

The price new is £599 so it would be half-price unless I can knock the price down.

Has anybody used this machine?  I have the opportunity to buy a used one locally for £300 ono.  Would that be a good price?  Apparently, it is about 2 years old and only been used half a dozen times.

Your thoughts would be helpful  -<

I did a little bit of sewing yesterday.  I repaired a blue badge holder.  The firm plastic film on both sides had broken and fallen off, so I cut some plastic from a clear box lid and stitched it in place,  It is now sturdier than when it was new.

@Stitches That is stunning!  Well worth mastering FPP to get results like that.  I personally like FPP  :)

One thing I use for FPP is bank paper. It's very thin and I have some from when I worked at the Export House and needed six carbon copies (when typewriters were widely used).  I think it is still sold so worth looking for that.  I think it's around 30gsm.  Correction: 50gsm bank paper.  Rymans have it at £6.29 for 500 sheets

I always put zips in upside down on a side seam, then the nasty bit is less annoying!

Great minds   8)

Thanks @Surest1tch Today I have made a toile of the bodice.  It doesn't fit quite right.  I need some adjustments.  The pattern goes up to size 16, which I cut out but think I need a little bit more so will try to scale it up a bit.   ::thinks::

You've just reminded me that I have this pattern and I like this dress.  You could easily insert a side zip but I think, looking at the picture, you will need to lower the neck line a little.  It looks too small currently to get your head through without any additional opening.  But I guess that is something you could check when you toile it.

I do plan to lower the front neck as that looks too high for me.

@toileandtrouble I suppose a side zip could be put in upside down if there is room to tuck the zip pull in somewhere.

How about making something like this @Lilian

I did think about that @Ohsewsimple but it's difficult to find an invisible zip that have a hole in the pull.  I will do a search anyway.  Thanks for that idea.

I found one that might work https://www.myfabrics.co.uk/p/1149.M.html
