Oxfam shops are selling cotton sashiko quilts for approx £40, that would make up into similar coats as sold on Toast for many times more.
-
ooooohhh linky?
-
Is this the kind of jacket you're thinking of, @jintie ? :loveit:
https://www.toa.st/uk/product/c5lbd/embroidered+wrap+jacket.htm
I love her jeans too. They look so comfy. (I'm so old!)
-
£????? :S
-
Pearl, I was thinking more of their Kantha jackets.
-
Now my computer thinks I'm interested in beautiful clothes that are out of my price range. It's right. If only I could make clothes, I'd make...
This (https://www.toa.st/uk/product/cjhtb/kantha+quilted+ikat+jacket.htm?clr=cjhtb_reds&gclid=Cj0KCQjw19DlBRCSARIsAOnfRej9ucDTlOGY8XdLxXnzd1tw2-jNrxfEzxih7H0mVhBOIbA93zeAGdsaAotNEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds)
And this (but not in this colour) (https://www.siestacrafts.co.uk/product/kantha-jacket-with-collar.aspx)
-
Pearl, the bedjacket was the one that caught my eye.
I need a big kick up the rear - I bought a Sashiko machine almost two years ago and have made nothing on it - I eventually figured out how to thread it months after ignoring the demo (ha, I know everything!). I went to find some heavy linen in my stash today to make placemats on it - and guess what- it has vanished. What a wuzz.
-
Oh go on, @jintie . I can live vicariously through you. Or you could make one for me. ;)
-
@Pearl, the jacket in the first link is a loose fitting and very simple style, ideal for a beginner in garment sewing ;)
Seriously, I’ve seen your Darkside work and am pretty sure you could manage a jacket like this. Hence, I am sure you could manage this and help is always available here. All you need is a Kantha quilt and some courage :)
The second one is more difficult due to the set in sleeves.
-
I'm seriously tempted, @Manuela . Goes to google loose fitted jacket patterns.

@Pearl, just ask in the pattern section here for recommendations for easy loose fitting jacket patterns that are suitable for a Kantha jacket.
-
Please could anyone recommend an easy, loose fitted jacket pattern that would be suitable to make using a kantha quilt?
Something like this (https://www.toa.st/uk/product/cjhtb/kantha+quilted+ikat+jacket.htm?clr=cjhtb_reds&gclid=Cj0KCQjw19DlBRCSARIsAOnfRej9ucDTlOGY8XdLxXnzd1tw2-jNrxfEzxih7H0mVhBOIbA93zeAGdsaAotNEALw)
Those enablers, @jintie and @Manuela are leading me astray. I'll wear it to FoQ 2021.
-
I have my eye on the Harlesmere jacket in the Merchant and Mills workbook.
-
@Pearl that's lovely and I'd consider buying it if it were longer..... I hate short jackets / jumpers / tops / t shirts
-
Unfortunately, much as I would like to join in ( I'd buy it were it longer ) nothing would be simple enough for me to even attempt
I come out in a rash if I just touch a thin papery pattern
-
And me, @Lowena . You don't want to get a chill in your kidneys.
-
The seamwork Quince day robe looks pretty close to me.

And me, @Lowena . You don't want to get a chill in your kidneys.
You sound like my Mum :D :D ( even though you are young enough to be my daughter :o )
-
@Pearl, Vogue 1610 would be a good start for a Kantha jacket, and Sandra Bentzina’s instructions are usually excellent.
Vogue 1610 (https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v1610)
Vogue 9334 (https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v9334) would also work well and be easy.
-
There's the Grainline Tamarack Jacket (https://grainlinestudio.com/shop/women/tamarack-jacket-pdf/) which is designed for quilted fabric. Worth a look anyway. Says it's for Advanced Beginners.
-
Thanks, @Manuela . I’ll check them out.
I do like that, @Vezelay , but I’m definitely not an advanced beginner.
-
@Pearl the problem with the Grainline pattern would be the set-in sleeve, this is the 'advanced' part of it :)
-
@Pearl I'm not suggesting that you use this pattern but I made the robe in McCalls 2476 last year as my first garment in nearly 40 years. It's the same shape roughly as those jackets and if you take your time and mark everything clearly you could do it no problem. I even used French seams and added a hanging loop!!! :o
Go for it! 0_0
-
I have no vision so can't see the first Vogue one as a jacket :|
Love the second Vogue one @Manuela and were I able to sew on more than the odd ( very odd sometimes ) button I'd give it a try ( although I thought Vogue was a blast from the way-past )
So...... make one for me pleeeeaaase @Pearl when you make one for yourself ;) <3

In one of my Burda magazines, there is a japanese influenced jacket which I've tried to find on their site, but can't. Will dig the magazine out later and have a look at it but in the meantime, I've found the following patterns which are of a similar shape, they might need a little changing but in essence are similar. I think I would quilt each piece of fabric first, ie a square of fabric larger than the said pattern piece, and then cut the pattern piece out of that.
What about this (https://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/cropped-jacket-092017) or this (https://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/cropped-jacket-042016) or this (https://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/vintage-blouson-jacket-102015) or this (https://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/swing-jacket-082014)

Thank you all so much for your help. Plenty of food for thought.
I was planning to buy a kantha quilt to use, @Missie , but if I quilted it myself, I could choose the fabric myself. In fact, I have some in my stash which might be just the job.
I've found this, @Lowena , so you'll be able to make one too. ;)

I have a book on making Japanese garments. And this looks a bit like one of the jackets in there. Simple shaping. If you need any info, just pm me.
-
Simplicity 3506, containing top/skirt/dress/trousers and jacket might be a starting point for such a jacket. I've got the size 10-18 option from which I've made the top only. If it'd be suitable you can have it for the price of the postage.
-
I've just bought Mccalls 7912, half price in sale.

Oh yeah... in your dreams @Pearl ..... in fact, in my dreams I'd make 2.... spring colours and autumn colours...... perhaps @Iminei would make me one if you won't :P
-
@BrendaP made a lovely blue patchwork jacket - I know because I saved the picture into my inspirations folder. I don't know what the pattern was, but maybe she could tell us... :)
-
I didn't say I wouldn't, @Lowena , but you know how long it takes me to make anything. You probably wouldn't want to wait that long. I'm sure Iminei would make you one. It's not as if she's got anything else to do
apart from a baby quilt and a wedding quilt and....
Thanks, @Acorn. I'll go and search.

Do you mean this? I think I used Butterick 6063. (https://butterick.mccall.com/b6063)

Chosen because it has minimal shaping, just small side bust darts. I don't like the collar as the pattern is, as it is so I hacked it about a bit and changed it to a plain round neckline (like the Beatles used to wear in the '60s) and forgot about the side vents but I did line it. I chickened out of doing buttonholes and used frogging and toggles instead.
The patchwork is denim from old jeans - legs were cut wider then! I cut 6" squares of denim and sewed them together to make pieces big enough for each pattern piece and then just winged it.
-
Well done @jintie, we’ve got Pearl interested in making garments. Now we just need to convince @Lowena to make a green dress :ninja:
-
Never!! I'm not clever, patient or accurate enough to make clothes :|
-
Let's not rush into this. Maybe we can have a sewalong Kantha/Sashiko/Wabi Sabi quilted jacket later on in the year? For me, there are a few things to learn first. Like getting a non-darted jacket to fit well. Also to make soft thin quilted fabric. Maybe, mods, merge this with the simple jacket pattern thread?
-
Never!! I'm not clever, patient or accurate enough to make clothes :|
:S If you are patient and accurate enough to quilt then dressmaking will be a doddle.
Me, I am not clever, patient or accurate enough to quilt, especially the patient and accurate bits.
@Pearl gosh this website took me back to my hippy days. These used to be loads of shops in Leeds that sold this sort of thing for next to nothing. And don't get me started on Joss sticks.
@jintie do we have a link to the Oxfam page? I cannot see anything on their website.
-
Janet, I saw one in the local Thornbury shop. Next time I am there I will take a photo.
-
@sewmuchmore i still have joss sticks ;)
-
As @jintie suggested, I merged the two topics. I still have this silk pieced Kantha quilt to make a long-ish jacket or vest, so I might join you here.

Did you quilt this yourself, @Manuela ? It is gorgeous. Perfect for this project.
-
Did someone once say they were sending for some ready quilted sashiko fabric from china? Sorry cannot remember who but they were going to make a jacket and I seem to remember the fabric was grey?
-
No @Pearl, I bought it in an Indian Emporium here in Hong Kong. The pieced top is silk, the under layer is cotton.

Never!! I'm not clever, patient or accurate enough to make clothes :|
Now for me, that would read 'I'm not clever, patient, or accurate enough to make patchwork' :)
-
Marcy Tilton has some lovely Kantha fabrics.. expensive but lovely

Nah, @Bodgeitandscarper it's all straight lines and angles.... no curves; set in sleeves?? ; paper patterns etc etc.
Just fabric and 1/4" seam allowance and you're sorted ;)
