Access All Accessories / Prym Caroline Bag base and zip
« on: May 08, 2020, 10:14:10 AM »
I am making a bag for my mum's birthday on Wednesday (yikes) and beg you dear bag makers for assistance.

The pattern calls for a zip (yikes - I haven't inserted a zip since I was at school) and I also want to use a Prym bag bottom (not yikes - I've used one within the last 40 years).  Do I insert the zip before the bag bottom or after.

TIA

Not on their website yet but exhibitors have been informed.

ETA - the message to exhibitors said postponed, but the email I received about stewarding says cancelled.

A Good Yarn / Knitting for premature babies
« on: March 31, 2020, 20:59:50 PM »
Over the past week, I have been knitting for Birmingham children’s hospital.
Of course, I haven’t sewn them up and have no buttons.

Blankets...

and jackets

I have a lot of that green wool.

I used to follow a YouTube channel with quilt tutorials.  It was American and was filmed at a meeting so had an audience and some audience participation.  There was a large display board on which the blocks were arranged.

Anyone have any idea what it could be or was it a dream?

Sewing Machines / Time for an upgrade
« on: March 03, 2020, 11:22:12 AM »
As I said on the March BOM thread, my Janome DXL603 is having a hissy fit today so I’m thinking it is time for an upgrade.  I need a bigger throat for quilting but what other features would you consider essential or desirable?

36
I don't give much thought to backing fabric usually and often use a sheet or duvet cover but would like something special for the quilts I started at Jan Hassard workshops and would welcome advice on colour(s) and pattern.  I don't want anything too busy (tops are busy) or plain (to hide my rubbish quilting).

Curved bargello

and Spirals (It is four time this size but I don’t have a photo.)

TIA

Choice of wool detracts from pattern but wearable.

Tech Know How / Is it something I've done?
« on: January 10, 2020, 17:36:24 PM »
Yesterday and today, the way the forum appears on my pc is different.  The background is white instead of its usual TSP blue-iness and my profile info is on the right.  When I open a thread, the posts are on the left and on the right is a huge speech bubble.  On my ipad, all is as normal.  Is it something I've done?

ETA Instead of the thumbs up, thumbs down thingy is written 'yay' and 'nay'.  I don't like it.

A Good Yarn / Honeycomb blanket

After my mum made a couple of these baby blankets, I thought I'd give it a go.

Access All Accessories / Prym Caroline Bag base and wadding
« on: August 19, 2019, 19:44:38 PM »
In class on Friday, I started to make a bargello bag.  I have a Prym Caroline Bag base and have used it to join the front and back panels.  I would like to use wadding to give the bag more body, but am not sure of whether to add it before or after sewing the side seams.

ETA My concern is the two layers of wadding and bag base going through the machine.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Scrappy binding
« on: August 11, 2019, 12:38:09 PM »
I am planning to make scrappy binding for my log cabin quilt and intended to join left over logs at 45 degrees to make it.  However I have come across this

Have you used this method?  Any advice gratefully received.   :*

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / FoQ 2019 pics
« on: August 01, 2019, 19:58:33 PM »
Well, despite  not feeling 100%, I had a good day at the FoQ.  It was great to meet up with TSPers and to see the gorgeous PL quilts up close.

I didn't take many pics, @wrenkins , but here they are.

The last pic is the quilt to which I contributed.  I made 50 leaves.  Can you spot them?   :D :D :D

My curved bargello is almost ready for sandwiching so I am pondering thread for quilting.  I had thought of using a variegated YLI thread as recommended by @Iminei , but most of them seem to include green.  What colour do you think would be best for this?

TIA

As the Mystery Quilt is within a gnat's whisker of being pieced, I've been thinking about the backing and, as I still love this quilt and it's ten days until I can get to the Cotton Patch for wadding, I thought I'd piece the backing but how?  I'm planning to quilt it by hand using big stitch quilting and will probably quilt it more than I usually do (because it's usually Christmas Eve, the day before someone's birthday, the morning of the FoQ when I'm quilting).

As usual, I'm finding it difficult to come to a decision so here's what I have.

The quilt top about 48" squarish

2m x wof purple batik which I bought to be the backing of this quilt at FoQ the year before last (not big enough on its own) and 12 four patches left over from when fabrics 2 and 5 swapped over

About 1m of the teal background fabric, 1/2m of the feature fabric, less of the other fabrics

I was thinking of making more blocks like clue 5 but using different fabrics with the background fabric and making a strip to go within the purple batik.

Do you think that would work?  Does the batik even go?

Events / Quilt and Stitch Village, Uttoxeter

I'm toying with the idea of going to this event tomorrow.  A quick search reveals that Lilian attended last year.  Would you recommend it, @Lilian ?  Has anyone else been?
