Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Unpick or adapt?
« on: March 09, 2019, 09:36:50 AM »
When I got the Mystery quilt out earlier this week, I found that I had made the blocks which make the central star using the wrong four patches in some parts and with the patches in the wrong orientation in others.  So... should I undo them and make them again properly or adapt the pattern to use the blocks I've made, as in the pic?

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Scrappy advice, please
« on: February 21, 2019, 10:44:09 AM »
No prizes for guessing what prompted me to post this.

I'm doing a log cabin class in April and would like to make a scrappy one but I'm unsure of how to combine scraps.

Is it necessary to sort scraps beyond light and dark?
Are there some scraps that just don't fit?

I'd like to be random but not sure I have it in me.

I've looked at some US based blogs where scrappy quilters sort their scraps into batiks, small prints etc.  Is that the way to go?

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Color Play for Quilters
« on: November 24, 2018, 12:52:51 PM »
(You can't imagine how much it pained me to omit the 'u'.)

Yesterday, I treated myself to this Craftsy class and a couple of fat quarter bundles.  Has anyone else done it?  It is very thorough and I am enjoying it so far.  Hopefully, it will help me with my strata for the Jan Hazzard workshop and I won't have to be mithering you so much.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Orphan blocks
« on: October 28, 2018, 16:32:34 PM »
If any of you have any of you have any orphan blocks that you would like to donate to a charity for young people leaving care, please pm me and I'll send you the address you can send them to.

I have a drawer for orphan blocks.  If I donate them, what could I put in that drawer?   ;)

Events / The Big Textile Show
« on: October 28, 2018, 14:51:31 PM »
This morning, I've been to The Big Textile Show at Leicester Racecourse.  What a lovely little show it is!

I had booked a batik workshop but sadly I received an email to say that it had been cancelled so I did a kantha workshop instead.  I'm stitching a fish.

The highlight of the show was the exhibition of textiles by many groups and individual textile artists from the local area.  So many talented women people.  Some truly inspiring work.

I was very restrained on the retail front, although I did buy a stitchbook starter kit from Kim Edith.

Have come away feeling that I don't want to go back to work.  I want to stay at home and create!

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Curved Bargello
« on: October 14, 2018, 15:10:24 PM »
Last year, I attended Jan Hassard's Spirals workshop which resulted in a small, unfinshed quiltette, which is, of course, festering in my UFO box.  On this occassion, I bought a kit from Hannah's Room.

Today, I have booked a place on the Curved Bargello workshop in March.   Course requirement is four colourways with six fabrics in each running from light to dark and a fifth feature colour.   Do I buy a kit or do I woman-up and put my own together?

Pros
Buying a kit is easier.
I'm rubbish at colour.  When I was making my (yellow and violet) quilt for the Project Linus, I spent most of the time asking, "Is this yellow?"
If I buy a kit, I'll know it's "right".

Cons
It would be more of an achievement to do it myself.  If I don't do it, I'll never learn.
I could use some of my stash (especially the left over yellow and violet).

Not sure if it would cost more.  So, dear ladies, what do you think?

I have only used Ikea Polarvide fleece to back quilts but wonder if this polyester one from Dunelm would be suitable for, say, a quilt for Project Linus.   ;)

(Is fleece always polyester?)

Technical Help / To make a toile
« on: June 24, 2018, 18:10:33 PM »
What would you recommend to make a toile?  I thought I had an old cotton sheet but it appears not, so I will have to buy something.  Calico? A sheet or duvet cover from the charity shop?

TIA

Technical Help / Is there an easy fix for this?
« on: June 24, 2018, 10:50:26 AM »
I am a funny shape size whereby I am a 12 on top and 14 below (fat thighs  :|).  Yesterday I bought a size 14 dress which fits okay when I'm standing up but when I sit down, the front gapes.  I wondered if there is anything I could do to solve this problem (with limited skills).
