With (too much? -< ) spare time on my hands, I've signed up to a Block of the Month club called Funny Faces, from Shiny Happy World. I think it cost £3.05 and I don't think that's too bad per month. I can manage spending that.
I keep seeing a few of these brightly coloured quilts on Pinterest and I like them, especially the Monsters one.
Aimed at children mainly but who's to say when you're too old to enjoy brightly coloured daft things. ;)
They're really simple raw edge appliqué...(OMG, I've just done my first ééé! Thank you to whoever told us about that little trick.)
I've got heaps of fabric which ought to be perfect for this sort of thing. Made a start yesterday on a cockatiel.
Really happy with this one. :)
I'm going to lay them out in a 'Polaroid' frame-type layout, that's why it's wonky. I don't have the background fabric yet for outside of the frame area.
The block itself is 10 inch finished size but with my polaroid frame setting it's going to be 17 inches finished.
They'll release a new face on the first of the month, and I was still just in time to access last months skunk, so I've done that one this morning.
Not quite so happy with this one. Toyed with the idea of using some red and white fabrics but felt the 'skunk' was going to be lost without the identifying black and white colours. There were some samples shown in pretty colours but they looked (to me anyway) like teddy bear faces with squirrel tails. ><
I think, (but maybe I'll change my mind as I go along), I'm going to try to be believable and realistic with the colours used, where I can. If there are any monster faces I'll be able to do as I please. 0_0

I'll try to remember to show you the other ones as and when they're released. :)

That looks an interesting project to do and I like the two you've already done, although the cockatiel is my favourite so far! :thumb:
-
@Sandra i really like your skunk. If the other Shiny Happy World quilts I’ve seen are anything to go by, this quilt will be in glorious technicolour so a slightly muted skunk will give the eye a rest.
-
@Sandra , that looks fun and I love both your animals so far. Cockatiel is slight favourite because I'm a parroty person.
-
They look great @Sandra
-
They're brilliant. What is it about the skunk that you're not happy with? @Sandra
-

It doesn't look too bad does it?
I don't have much dark/black fabric with a bit of texture and I think I over thought how I was going to do it. I went through my stash several times to look for something which was just right.
After finding the multi fabrics to use on the cockatiel it seemed a bit of a let down only needing two different colours for the skunk.
And black and white are a bit :\ It seemed a bit flat in comparison.
I'm looking forward to what I'll get next month. :)

Love these they look like fun, just what we need at the moment
-
@Sandra I love the cockatiel, like everyone says, a cheery block
-
@Sandra I don't know how he looks in the flesh but the skunk's facial features don't stand out on a screen. Perhaps they could be made a stronger feature especially the eyes.

That was part of the problem using dark fabric and using black for the eyes.
I wondered whether to try to put a glint in the eyes to see if it would make them stand out more but I'll leave it as it is for now and see what other characters I'll be making. It's early days yet.

-
That looks very interesting, and a lot of fun. Bright quilts are lovely!
-
What a fun quilt this will be. The skunk is adorable.
-
Oh Wow! I think both of them are gorgeous but I see what you mean about Pepé (le Phew)
Maybe rhinestones for the eyes? Or a different colour ... Orange? Yellow? Green?
-
@Sandra i have just spent a lovely time looking at that site, I think I used one of her embroidery designs years ago but haven’t looked recently, her designs are lovely and such fun.
for anyone interested there are lot of free designs and ideas, I love this one https://www.shinyhappyworld.com/2018/05/make-a-wall-hanging-add-a-wonky-churn-dash-frame-to-your-favorite-quilt-block.html. @Diane I think you might like some of these too.
I am tempted to try an easy block and make it into a cushion to go on my bed, so I am going back later to have a better look.
-
Love those @Sandra ! I’ve never tried raw edge appliqué, but often wonder if it would wear just as well.I look forward to seeing all the funny faces.
-
Looking forward to seeing more @Sandra . I have used raw edge applique quite a lot on cushion covers. I find the herringbone stitch to be best for it (I use mainly cotton and linen) and even in regular use it keeps the edges under control.
-
I've now done the freebie Spooky Cat face - (clearly a release for Halloween.)
I've also bought some fabric for the main colour outside of the Polaroid frames. A nice red...or so I thought.
It's a lovely colour and it's not as bright and brash a red as it looked on the screen when I was buying it. I'm pleased it's not as bright as I thought it might be. :) The faces are going to bright enough and I hoped this would be suitable.
But now I've cut some strips to frame the faces I don't like it as much as I'd hoped. It's not bright enough. :S
I can't afford to buy yards and yards of fabrics on a whim though until I find one that's just right, so I might have to learn to like it.
Does it really matter? Who cares? Who am I making it for?
I'm enjoying myself doing these so I don't think I'm going to worry about it.
It'll probably look a bit better when it's attached properly, pressed properly and squared up.
Sandra.
xxx
-
They look great, I am still tempted to do a cushion with one of these, what stitch did you do around the edge @Sandra.
I think the red outside will be fine when you have all the other colours there too
-
@Celia I did a straight stitch (as instructed on Shiny Happy) which I'm sure I'll regret in the future if this gets finished and has any sort of use.
It's clearly (surely) not going to wash and wear very well, as mentioned by Sheilago a few posts ago.
I like the simplicity of the straight stitch in the black. It's like the drawn outline of cartoon images. I don't have a blanket stitch on my machine otherwise I'd probably use that and I don't want to use a zig zag.
Sandra.
xxx
-
It looks fine @Sandra thank you for telling me, I think if I do it I will probably do a straight stitch as it is only going to be a cushion and I agree I like the look.
-
I'm a little sad we'll have to wait a year before you'll be able to put this all together. It's going to be so fun. I really like all your squares.
-
I think the cat is sweet and smiley, not spooky at all.
If you're not over keen on the red you could use a mix of bright colours for the frames. It could look good in the 3 primaries.
-
It's probably too late now but if you had a sample of the right shade of red, you could send it to one of the obliging retailers - Doughty's and Midsomer Quilting spring to mind though there are bound to be others - and ask them to match it up for you. I had awful trouble when I had to buy a red from seeing it on screen and ended up getting three different ones!
Having said that, I think it looks just right on my screen which is a Mac retina screen so not too shabby as far as representing colours goes.
I also like Ploshkin's idea of using the primary colours.
And I think the cat is beautiful :meow:
-
I am in love with that cat <3
BB
-
@Bumblebuncher and @Flobear The cat's a free pattern available on the Shiny Happy website if you fancied doing your own. :thumb:
The red's just roughly pinned for now. I've been giving the blocks a glance as I pass by and I still haven't warmed to the red fabric yet.
I also like Ploshkin's idea.
Primaries...? or even just go mad and use an assortment. That'll use up some of the stash. 0_0
Sandra.

I have just spent an hour trying to print this a pattern, my printer is the problem not the pattern, then another hour trying to find suitable fabric……….
Right now I am going to give up sewing forever  I have cupboards full of fabrics but nothing suitable I am going back to knitting or maybe even weaving
:boohoo: Stomp off to find tea and cake
-
Oh Celia
I've been thwarted (took me 3 goes to get that right and I'm an ace speller usually) at every turn lately. I won't post the list of what hasn't happened because... as it would be too depressing.
However, bumping along the bottom means things can only get better!

It's the first day of a new month and the new block has been released....

This quilt is going to be so lovely.
-
I am being very tempted by this quilt, I have nearly finished the free cat and am going to make it into a cushion.
@Sandra can I post my progress here and keep all shinny happy things together or I can put it on another thread, I really don’t mind, I don’t want to pinch your post.
-
I've unpinned the red fabric. I don't think I can use it. :S
They look better already.
I noticed in yesterdays email that I can vote which funny face I'd like for next month. ><
Errrrr....NO! :scream:
It did give a warning NOT to click the link if you like surprises. I haven't and I won't click the link.

Thanks so much for making this thread @Sandra
I love the animals you’ve made so far, they’re really great!
I’ve now spent ages looking through her website and bought the Noisy Farm Quilt pattern.
Can’t wait to get started. :thumb:

That's great @WildAtlanticWay :thumb: I love the goat on the farm quilt. 0_0
Sandra.

Yes, the goat is cute.
I took a screen shot and sent it to my Goat loving friend. I’ll be seeing her at Sewing Group later so I suspect she’ll want to find out more. :)

Sorry @Celia :embarrassed: I should have replied to this well before now. Yes of course you can add any Shiny Happy stuff on here. :)
Sandra.
xxx
-
Thank you @Sandra your timing is perfect I was about to start a thread with this
I need help I wanted to make this into a cushion and have only put the wadding behind the main calico bit but now think it is too small can I put another border or should I just make a small cushion and perhaps another bigger one, it’s only to go on my bed.
This is the piece I did the other day which resulted in me asking about Janome feet and stitches as it is a bit puckered.
I am loving these appliqués so I may well do more.
-
That's really cute @Celia If you want it larger then i'd just add another border.
-
Gorgeous, @Celia .
-
That looks lovely @Celia. I do like the facial expression!! :thumb:
I agree with @Diane, to make it bigger just add another border. Or use it as a central applique and attach it to the size of fabric you want.
-
Oh no, another website to look at. I can see now why P&Q can become so addictive.
Amended, i have just had a quick look and she does embroidery and crochet as well as quilts, i may be gone awhile. :thumb:
-
That is lovely @Celia I think another border, possibly the same fabric on all sides would look good :)
-
Ok second border on but now I don’t have enough of the fabric I was going to use for the back unless I don’t put a fastening in it.
Do I just wash it whole when it needs it
unpick a seam when it needs washing
Or buy more fabric

-
Hmmm...washing it whole is going to be a PITA to dry it. Unpicking it is also going to be a bit of a nuisance.
Did you say you needed a zip? What size /colour zip do you need? I might have one spare if I rummage through my zip stash.
Sandra.
xxx
-
@Sandra thankyou for your kind offer, I was searching around for something else this morning and found a pink zip, too long but that’s not a problem, I think it is one that can out of some else really can’t remember but it isn’t new, for what I want it will work fine.
Finished making the cushion this afternoon and really pleased with it, glad I put an extra border on.
-
Wow, @Celia . That’s wonderful
-
@Celia That is a lovely cushion, i like that you changed the border as it frames it really well, a lovely fun looking cushion :perfect10:

The double border's lovely. :) It looks great.

@Celia I really like the double border as a design feature. Looks really cute!

Thank you eve for your nice comments.
I also want to say thanks to everyone who helped with my decision to sew downstairs it was definitely a good idea, I find myself just doing a small amount, which sometimes turns into more and I just feel more comfortable down here. Just wait ing for my new table, sometime in March I think.
-
The new Funny Face has been released today and it's lovely.
It's a snail! 0_0 His name's Sullivan.
I'll have to have a rummage to find some suitable fabrics, but I don't know when I'll get around to starting it.

Something like that @Iminei
Three of the fabrics are odd little mystery scraps out of my bit box. Love being able to find a use for odd little scraps.
No Dimples used on this one but there is a bit of Spraytime, and I'm really pleased with the batik I used for the body. It's mottled with little spots and some are in a peachy colour which tones in very nicely to the shell. :)

He’s so cute!
-
Love the blocks, you’ve done so far. Just had a look at the web site and it is excellent for inspiration! I’ve never done raw edge appliqué: even when instructions say ‘raw edge’ , I end up satin stitching the edges with zig zag as I always worry that after all my work cutting out, the images might fray. Do you find they’re reasonably hardwearing?
-
@Sheilago I've no idea if they're hardwearing or not. They will (surely?) fray but I'm okay about that.
I've recently seen something about how much they fray where (Shiny Happy) Wendi tested how they washed but I've no idea exactly where I read it. :S
Can't remember if she was testing different types/makes of Bondaweb?
They washed and looked okay. Better than I expected them to be.

Your latest one @Sandra is brilliant you are a very good sewer.
My Cat cushion I did a few months ago from her free pattern is standing up well, it doesn’t get a lot of wear though as it lives on my bed, every time I see it I smile. I am thinking of doing a dog one for my friends birthday at the end of the month.

A spider monkey for this month.
I wasn't sure I liked it when I saw what this months surprise block was and my initial thought was to not bother to make it. -<
The sample ones are shown in blues, red and a dark grey and I think maybe it was the colours I wasn't so keen on.
I've said that I intended to make these faces in 'realistic' colours as much as I could so it's browns for this one and I have to say that I like it better than I expected. I don't love it but it's recognisable as a monkey and it's not too bad.
Shiny Happy have given instructions recently as to how to put a glint in the eyes of the faces and (when I can be bothered) I think I'll try that on some of these one day.

I haven't started this months face yet. This months is a lion. He's lovely. :)
I'm working on this one instead for now. I'm going to make it into a cushion for it to be sold/raffled/tombola/whatever at the care home. They've got something going on at the beginning of September and I thought I could easily make something as my contribution. If I've got time I might do another one.

A zip arrived this morning so I was able to finish off the last bit of the puppy cushion and it's been delivered to the home.
It seems to have been appreciated. The lady loved it when I handed it over to her. She said she might do it as a 'name the dog' item, and put a bottle of wine with it as the prize.
I was about to pop it back in the bag and she told me not to bother. She needed to show it to everybody first. 0_0

Had the time and the inclination yesterday to (finally!) get the August block done. :)
The block for September is an octopus and although it's lovely, it's a single fabric piece so unless you get fabric which is just right, I'm expecting it to look a bit :\ flat.
While I was looking for lion-colour fabrics I found a couple of possibilities for the octopus. I'm still at the thinking about it stage.
I couldn't resist buying the tree frog, dragon, and chameleon blocks when I bought the puppy one. No nearer to making those yet but one day I'm sure to find the motivation to get them done.

I have some great fabric for an Octopus if you'd like it!
As soon as I rediscovered the fabric I've used for the background I knew it was The One for this block. That's exactly what I hoped it would look like.
Octopus fabric? I'm trying to be sensible and use some of this stash I've got here.
I've got a nice 'bubbles' batik for the background and I have a light grey spotty batik for the octopus. They've been put to one side while I think about it. I think I'm happy with the bubbles but not sure about the grey.
I need to go through my fabrics again to have another look.
Thank you.

Tree Frog. The original was blue and while he was lovely, I needed mine to be a Red-Eyed Tree Frog. I seamed at the 'wrists' so that there would be the two colours on the limbs.
I'm not entirely happy with the background but it'll do.

Beautiful as usual @Sandra . You always choose such perfect fabrics. Do you have an enormous stash or do you buy fabrics specially for each block?
Thank you. It's the most difficult part isn't it, choosing the fabric?
I have a good sized stash. I'm not sure I'd consider it to be enormous, well not as big as some folks have (mentioning no names ;) )
The October block was released on Saturday and it's an owl :) I'm still at the  thinking about it, stage for that one.

I haven't given up on these but I've fallen behind and now have a bit of a backlog. :S After I last posted on here I had the madness from next door to deal with and I've lost my Mum.
Waiting in the wings are the owl, an alligator, a zebra, and the new one for this month is a donkey. They all look really good so I will eventually make them and show them to you.
I very quickly made up another puppy cushion to give as a gift to my sis-in-law for Christmas.

I've been meaning to lay them all out together so I can check the balance of the background colours I've been using.

These are such fun blocks. Are the monthly new ones shown on their web site @Sandra ? It's possible you can figure out how to do the future blocks that appeal to you after all of your practice.
-
The style of the bumble bee is a bit at odds with the rest ( cartoony). The others all have natural features but real life bees don't have smiley faces. I think the skunk is lovely. They look brilliant together :)

I think all of the blocks are eventually available to purchase on the website but I don't think I need any more. I've no idea what I'm going to do with these yet. :S (Unless they issue one that's so utterly irresistible that I can't not buy it. 0_0 )
Yes. Looking at them all together, the bee looks worse of all probably due to the background fabric being so pale compared to the others.
I've looked out the fabrics for the zebra so I might get that done tomorrow.

I love the skunk, it’s lovely.
What is the one to the right of the BB supposed to be?
-
Reading left to right @Ella Cockatiel, Bumblebee, Dragon .. I think
-
Thanks @Iminei I did think of a dragon but as all the others appeared to be real animals I wasn’t sure.
Still love that skunk.
-
It sounds like the skunk is going to stay. 0_0 I'll feel guilty for leaving him out now he's got such support.

I like the zebra. :)
He's supposed to have a simple little smiling mouth but I don't think he needs it.
Yes @Ellabella it's a dragon. :)

I agree with you about the mouth - he has a lovely expression as it is. :) Slightly quizzical.

The zebra and owl are lovely.
They definitely all need to stay together as a quilt.
-
Mr Owl looks very serious. I like him!
-
Mr Owl reminds me of Archie the Eagle Owl, who recently left our neighbourhood to somewhere where he could stretch his wings a little more.

Love the donkey. 0_0
