Vintage Machines / Re: Reminiscing! Singer Merritt 187

I learned on my Gran's treadle Singer - all gold paint! Then when I was a student I lived in a house where there was an even more elaborately painted treadle Singer - I seem to remember a gold sphinx. So that machine was well used by me too.

My grandmother had a treadle, too. I remember being fascinated by it.

A built-in needle threader is a great idea. As I get older, I am even more thankful I have one on my Bernina.

Vintage Machines / Reminiscing! Singer Merritt 187

Occasionally, I think back to the very first sewing machine i sewed on. My mum bought it brand new about 1971 but rarely used it. But I used it a lot! It was a Singer Merritt 187 and it sewed like a dream!

If you scroll down this page a bit you can see a photo:

Does any one remember this machinery, even better, sewn on it?

Will y'all stop with the suppliers!  :o

My "adequately proportioned for all the sewing I do" storage cabinets are full to bursting with my Girl Charlee acquisitions from last week @Vezelay  in the queue to get in!!!

I have a mountain of stretchy stuff now that is very pretty but scary and loads of other stuff that is also pretty but scary! Meanwhile I'm fannying around sewing wee squares together and hunting about looking for courage. I'm like the lion in the Whizz but with sewing patterns...also tooooo many!  0_0 0_0 0_0

Oh no! Don’t stop!

The viscose linen is beautiful and I can't believe those prices.  For the first time in my sewing life, I am actually tempted to order fabric online.

I switched to the English translation and searched for viscose linen and nothing came up. How did you find it?

ETA I found it. Dutch word for linen is linnen so searched on that.

OMG! I can’t believe the great prices at Tissus de Reve! Haven’t got round to the other site yet! Holy cow!

Why is fabric so expensive in the U.K., I wonder!

Now don't blame me @Sewbee on your own credit card be it. Yes they are. Coupons de st.Pierre has the peculiarity of selling in 3 metre lengths only. Tissues de reve have some lovely stuff too.

Ooh! Lovely! Are their prices pretty good? I must look them up and see if they both have a website.

One place in Germany I like is http://myfabrics.co.uk. Their website is in English and there are some lovely fabrics - and lots of them.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Cheap patterned jersey fabric?
« on: February 23, 2020, 10:05:42 AM »
Any ideas where I can get cheap jersey fabric?  It all seems so expensive nowadays, I used to only ever buy it at £6 a meter at the very most, usually less.  I'm looking now (online, I've tried the three little fabric shops within a day's drive) and seeing it at £8, £10, and a lot more.  Every now and again I see some at £6 or £7 and think that's not too bad, then discover that's for HALF a metre - no way!

To be more specific, I like blue patterns, but not too floral/old lady, and not stripes.

Any websites I've missed I wonder?

I frequently buy jersey from http://Croftmill.co.uk. It is very reasonable priced. They have other good buys, too. Very good place to buy.

The Haberdashery / Re: Size and wash/care labels

Does anyone use these labels?

I’m finding that more and more charity shops won’t take couture homemade clothes without labels.

I have considered using these but there are so many variations of how to launder so many different labels would be required.

I would really like fabric content labels, though. I frequently forget what a fabric is made of.
