Sewing Machines / Re: Bernina Machines - not so popular?

I've heard excellent things about Juki machines, and Jaguar too (they manufacture a lot for other people). I gather Bernina manufacture in china/ Taiwan etc, to keep the cost down but each run is overseen by a bernina trained QA person, how true I don't know...

But the more important question Sewbee.... have you considered an older bernina? The reputation on them is completely solid, as many vintage machines are!

Yes, I have. I have had Berninas all my life so the dealer is also looking out for a good 930 for me. I used to have one and it was outstanding.

Having said that I still want a new machine. I used to have the 930 and a computerised machine years ago. I like the extra features that come with them.

In the wardrobe / Re: Summer dresses - share what you make/made

I finished another dress, again with a large collar - I only realised lately how much I like collars with some drama...

This dress is just gorgeous, Manuela. I adore the material pattern, too.

I would LOVE to wear dresses again. I am 65 and havent worn them for about ten years at which time I began to gain weight and lost my waist. I am more or less "straight down", perhaps a rectangle. From the side I have a big bust and a tummy. (Not so heavy at the top but busty). Thankfully, I am 5 ft 8 in tall. I have resorted to wearing trousers or jeans! I love to wear nice things and now that I am getting a new sewing machine I am rethinking the clothes I have and what to make.

I am not good at selecting patterns that flatter my present figure. I had a lovely figure and along with being tall could wear just about anything years ago. :(

I also have sloping shoulders and don't look good with raglan seams. I didn't have this problem years ago when I was slimmer.

Would be grateful for pattern suggestions or any other comments or suggestions.

My local shop says they don't stock Bernina because their customer service is so bad  -<

Doesn't that depend on the dealer, though?

Sewing Machines / What was your very first sewing machine ?

I've been trying to find a photo of my very first sewing machine. My mother bought it for me some time around 1970. It was a Singer Merritt 187. (I am guessing about the 187 part but it's the closest I can find that has the knobs in the right place, only I could have sworn mine had a plastic base and not wood). Scroll down a bit and you will see the 187.

How I'd love to find one of these again! It was a wonderful machine and I sewed up a storm!

What was your first machine?

Coven of Beninas - I like it   :D
The coverstitch and the newer overlocker get refereed to as the evil twins.  The are all called anything beginning with B depending on how well they are behaving.  :S
Berninas now have IDT - copied from Pfaff.  :o
The 790 is very powerful, it manage to sew through the stop on a metal zip.
I do use the 730 occasionally - she never throws hissy fits!

I have seen IDT in many posts. Can someone tell me what it stands for?

Sewing Machines / Bernina Machines - not so popular?
« on: September 03, 2017, 09:41:42 AM »
I am about to buy a Bernina 570 but I have to ask ... are Berninas not so popular these days? Some dealers don't even sell them, let alone recommend them (in UK at least). Some say they are still the Rolls Royce of sewing machines but when I do searches on Google related to various aspects of machines, Bernina rarely shows up.

On the other hand, I read about lots of Janome, Brother, and even Singer.

What's happened in the industry in the ten years I haven't sewed?
