Alterations Advice Please / Re: Bodice too big on shop bought dress
« on: January 23, 2024, 10:36:59 AM »
I have the same problem @Aliz  in fact I have a summer dress I  bought in the sale after the made ones didn't fit because of weight loss.  I've  not started on it yet but your best bet is @Sandra who has rather more knowledge than I have for this type of alteration.

We took the easy way out and went on Amazon @HenriettaMaria much easier for lazy me who doesn't like to waste too much time on things I can't wear.  The spare keys were in the front downstairs bedroom so that would have been at risk if not covered up.

In the wardrobe / Re: What were your favorite makes in 2023?

Helen's Closet, Blackwood Cardigan, so flipping easy.  I made five last year and just had a delivery for another one.

Not sure I like the colour of Helen's blaclwood.  So far I have a couple russet reds, a pale green, light blue, grey and next a cream. Last one was meant to be shorter this next will be.  I don't put the pockets on either

Sewing Machines / Re: Update on my sewing machine world
« on: January 06, 2024, 10:16:23 AM »
It's funny, only computer Bernina I ever had was the little 215, which was an unwanted competition prize.  It was a lovely machine, did exactly what I wanted, didn't have many stitches but enough, but, whenever I used it I had the silly feeling that I had to be very careful with it and not knock it about so  always went very slowly with it.  Went I was back upstairs with the larger Pfaff I felt so much better, which is probably why I sold and got a smaller Pfaff.  A case of trust your gut.

If you share that space @deetee I should start looking for a another space sooner rather than later.  Nice machine.

The Haberdashery / Re: Cone to spool?
« on: December 20, 2023, 10:20:49 AM »
I went a bit mad on large cones so have three holders including a very nice wooden one that sits behind my overlocker.  I seem to remember trying to use particularly large commercial cone on my sewing machine and starting off with a large mug that had the thread going over my anglepoise light and into my Pfaff's two spool additional holder.  Looked a bit daft but it did work and fortunately never had to use that colour again.

Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hi all

Welcome from me too.  We're always happy to give advice but you may end up with several machines and a large fabric stash

If you think she's kidding she's not @deetee

Last time I used a hot water bottle I was probably under 10

I can't believe I've only bought 11 meters this year.  However on a sort out in odd places, I discovered a lot more than what I'd bought, which is not on my total list, although I got a couple of bargains from a shop that was closing down.

I made the mistake a few years ago of putting garment covers on my coats and jackets and some dresses..  They became out of sight and out of mind.  I literally forgot I had them until a few weeks ago when I went looking for something for a funeral (I think).  I'm now dying to wear the Orvis winter 'sheepskin coat' I had forgotten about plus the nice red zip front coat I bought from a designer outlet shop when I was still working so at least 17 years ago.

Because the wardrobes were full I was storing other stuff and a couple of Izzwotnots and coats on a rail under the stairs.

I think mild winters, being retired and not having to go out if it was cold was part of the reason and then Covid reared its head.

I had a clear out of handbags last week (and put them back).  I got a bee in my bonnet to buy another one and found I had many never used after one year, when I'd bought another in summer and then again in winter.

I did have a black coat once, in fact thinking about it, it would have not looked out of place now, but must have gone to the charity shop when I put on weight.

I think clothes depend on your priorities.  I had no children so it tended to me, me and maybe DH

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Overlocker recommendations please
« on: October 28, 2023, 18:07:07 PM »
I started off with Janome 644D  @Bodgeitandscarper , a real little workhorse. Never had any trouble with it, easy to work with as well.  Then I saw a Bernina, the 1150MDA, which was being sold at a reduced price of £485 (I'm anal with lists) because it was a  demonstrator. It also had a needle threader which was right up my alley.

Never had a Baby Lock but you never hear people complain and I suspect if I had the cash to splash I could be tempted, trouble is I have a lot of things on that 'splash list'.

Patterns Discussion / Re: The Sewing Workshop
« on: October 20, 2023, 18:19:35 PM »
I do that regularly @sewmuchmore .  Get all hyped up about something, spend ages deciding, even get the fabric and then take another look at the pattern and talk myself out.  Last one I got is for a Burda casual jacket.  I've already decided I don't want the squared off front, I want it rounded at the  bottom. I've got the fabric so whether it actually gets cut, no idea.  I hate cutting new patterns out as well.

I love a good threader @Sara-S nearly the best part of a machine.  Enjoy.
