Title: Sewing For Dolls
Post by: Ann on May 16, 2019, 16:39:11 PM
I sew for both American Girl and Gotz Happy Kids and enjoy the process. I also test patterns for designers and love doing that.

The latest pattern I tested was a fun one. A wedding dress from 1978. I did my own thing when it came to embellishing it and had a blast doing it. The lace edging around the bottom of the dress is sewn on by hand. The rest of the fabric from the trim was used to make the cape. I had a great time but this dress did take me about 15 hours to make.

Once my sewing room is set up, I am going to do a couple of dresses and will be knitting items to go with them.

Lovely work, Ann. The detail on the dress is really pretty.

There are some lovely designs for the American Girl dolls, but I'm not aware of the doll being available in the UK.

I don't think they are as well known in the UK as in North America. I have Gotz Happy Kids also and they are less known here than in the UK. I order my HK dolls from the UK but there is an outlet in the US that doesn't ship to Canada. I have a feeling people who purchase American Girl dolls in the UK have them shipped over.

I will be posting more in the future and that will include outfits I've made for the HK dolls.

I've not heard of the Gotz doll before.
I should say that I'm not a doll collector, and my daughter's too old now for me to be too aware of what's available in toy shops etc....but I do have a bit of a thing about stylish clothes for dolls.  0_0

I'll look forward to seeing what else you're making.  :)

I have a couple of dolls that are American Girl size... one of them a return from DGD as "she didn't play well with the others".   :o 0_0  My latest temptaion is Lydia of the Girl for All Time family.  I have Amelia and she's lovely.
I've made AG doll clothes on commission for DGD ("Gwandma, they need pink!").

Ann, your creations are so inspiring... thank you for sharing them.

Thank you everyone for the kind words on the doll's clothes. With the sewing room almost finished (we had a flood in the basement on April 3) I'm ready to sew in my happy place. I have the fabric for 2 doll's dresses prepped to cut out and sew. Both are for American Girl and I will be knitting sweaters to go with them.

Gotz dolls are made in Germany and are more popular over there. A few people I know here in Canada have started to collect them. I have 4 of them. Three are no longer produced and the 4th one will be available in August.

Here is a group picture of my 4 Gotz girls. I have 3 different face moulds and love them all.

Gotz dolls are quite expensive. Cheaper UK equivalents are Our Generation dolls, especially if bought on ebay. I have got a couple of clean, tidy ones to have here for our granddaughter to play with when she is older. They may even have some clothes by then   ;) ;) :) Apparently each manufacturer's doll has slightly different measurements, but only slight adjustments are needed.

Gotz dolls are expensive and I collect them. Children do not play with them. I have 2 American Girl dolls and both are models for clothing I sew as a pattern tester. I don't know if we can buy Our Generation dolls here in Canada. We an My Life As A.......dolls from Walmart and some of them are quite cute. I have one for a model. She was actually my first doll as an adult and she modeled many outfits in the fabric store I worked in. You need to tweak the patterns for her but that is easy.

How lucky that you have a DGD. We have a DGS and that is our only grandchild. We love him and encourage him in his interests (soccer and exploring museums). He lives a 5 minute drive from our house.

DGD was a surprise as no girls had been born in the family for a long time. She is 17 months old and adorable, although I wish we saw them a little more frequently. A brother or sister is due towards the end of July, and while health of Mum and baby is the most important thing of course, I am secretly hoping for a boy. I have acquired a couple of boys patterns from ebay - they can go back on there if not needed  :)

Yesterday I set up the sewing machine, ironing board, and cutting table and cut out a doll's dress. I got the bodice completed working on a technique I had to put aside 7 weeks ago. I am happy with the results as it is easy and accurate.

After doing some housework upstairs, I'll do the skirt. I have to knit a bolero to go with the dress.

The dress is done and I am saying it is a success. I had serger issues (thread broke) and one of the gather threads didn't want to cooperate. But, I'm happy.

I finished another dress for the dolls. This time it is plaid fabric and I put the plaid on the bias for the bodice.

I need to add to the dress -- red knit sweater, grey jacket with plaid lining is niggling in my mind. I also need to buy scottie dog buttons.

That is such a pretty dress Ann.

I love plaid used on the cross, and the red sash sets it off beautifully.

I tested a pattern and made a pleated skirt. A few things I would personally do different making it another time but overall a good pattern.

I used a dark denim chambray and wouldn't use it again. It is light weight and holds the pleats nicely but with a white thread in it, it looks like I have loose threads in a couple of spots.

I will make the left front a bit bigger also. I like having a bit of extra fabric under the front of wrap skirt. I won't use the claps the next time but buttons and snaps.

I've added to the plaid dress. As it was a very wet day (3.25" of rain fell), I decided to finish up a sun hat to go with the plaid dress. I finished the inside of the hat so no seams show.

Post by: Ann on July 16, 2019, 11:01:23 AM
@Helen M, thank you about the dress and hat. Sorry, I took so long to answer.

The hat has been tweaked as the ribbon and yarn would not match in the end. The right color ribbon was too wide, new bolero was still off from the ribbon. In the end, I made a flower.

The new bolero had it's issues (me) and I have started a new one with some new techniques being used. I'm really picky so this isn't unusual for me.

It will soon be done and I'll be happy.

The rest of the outfit is just lovely.  A very well dressed dolly.

Thank you for the kind words on the doll's clothes. I enjoy sewing them even though they can be finicky at times.

I had a cut once, cuss twice day and made a skirt too small for the 18" American Girl dolls. I carefully fixed the skirt so it fits the Gotz Girls. Anna happily modeled it but mentioned she thinks it would be perfect with a white t-shirt and white capris.

I'm sure she wants those two items as she can wear it with white sneakers. Crafty girl.

I did get the skirt made in the right size. I'm knitting a hat and sweater to go with it. I did  hear whisperings of needing a white t-shirt to go with the outfit. Bling added please.

That's Anna (doll's name). She has quite the personality and I love her. She is a tomboy who cleans up nicely as they say.

I made a summer dress for the dolls. It was a bit of a challenge as the instructions were not the best and the pictures were dark. I slugged on and got it done. I have problems finding eyelet lace so I used a lace trim and zig-zagged it on.

There is a embroidery package that goes with the dress and it does the eyelet lace on the ruffles (two widths) and the two different sleeves. I did a test of the embroidery and I'm pleased with the results. Now to figure out the best size hoop to make enough for an outfit in custom colors.

I got a dress made for Laura (Happy Kidz by Gotz). I was short of fabric put eyelet on the bottom. It turned out cute and that piece of fabric is now history.

I made a 3 tiered skirt for one of the dolls. It is kind of cute.

The belt came from the jewelry section of a craft store and is closed with a necklace closure. Very simple to do. 2 O rings to put on the closure pieces.

I've started knitting a sweater to go with it. A very plain blue on that matches the blue in the skirt.

Another pattern by the same designer as the dress above. I was frustrated by not having lace and not finding any for the dress. I used organza trim which turned out really cute. Pattern fits the doll well and the instructions were good.

What wonderful outfits you have made @Ann so talented!  I bet they don’t impact the stash very much.
Title: Re: Sewing For Dolls
Post by: Ann on November 16, 2019, 10:58:15 AM
@Fabric Lover, thank you for your kind comments.

Doll clothes do not impact the stash much. It takes about .5-.75 meters to make a dress for them. A full outfit may take 1.5 meters and that takes a long time to make. Crazy as it seems, the dolls have their own stash of fabrics, ribbons, and lace. I've bought a few pieces for them but not for several months now. The aim is to sew up their stash a bit at a time. As I test for designers, I use up a bit each month.

I also knit for designers and am using up the wool stash. I had bought a bunch of yarn for $1.50 a skein and was going to donate it but one of the designers I test for calls for that yarn. I have 4 colors so have enough variety for that. Once it is gone, I will have to buy some more but will only get a small amount.

I am knitting a sweater right now and hope to have it finished by Monday. Once done, I will post a picture of it. It is quite cute.

I finished another test pattern. It was one that stretched me almost to my limits. I sewed slowly, read the pattern a lot, and quit when I started to feel stressed. I'm sure I have 12+ hours in this dress.

The bodice was very demanding with pleated set in a curved shoulder seam and then fit to an underlining. The sleeves were an egg shape which took a lot of time to gather and sew in. Then came the lining which was the easiest part if you read the directions correctly.

The skirt is pleated and it took me three tries to get it to fit the bodice. I think I have one pleat on top of another one which is annoying as I saw it when the dress was completed.

The hem was a bit of a confusion but ended up lovely. It has two channels in it with thick yarn threaded through it to make a padded hem.

I'm going to sew something easier now. Piping comes to mind as I love making it.

I finished another test pattern. The machine embroidery lace was a challenge. The design I wanted to stitch out wouldn't stay together when the wash away stabilizer was removed. I ended up using the second design which worked. The blouse pattern was another test pattern and went together well.

I made the underskirt to the Mary Laura dress to complete the Victorian looking outfit. It is a well designed pattern and went together easily.

I hope to make the blouse again using purchased lace for another Victorian look. But, I have a 1950's dress to test first.

Another test pattern finished. This one is designed by a lady who lives about an hour's drive from me. Keeper Dolly Duds (Eve Coleman) does a lot of historical/retro designs and all I've tested are extremely well designed. This dress is no exception. The dress is a 1950's circle skirt dress. I chose polka dots as I thought it was retro feeling.

I didn't do buttonholes as I was a bit worried about doing them (need to practice a lot more). I sewed on buttons and snaps underneath. Worked well.

I finished a doll's coat and tam. It is another test pattern by a lady who lives in Nova Scotia. I do love her patterns. The era is 1927.

I spent 4 days on this outfit. The coat if fully lined and I used a light weight wool. Lots of hand basting on to make sure it went together properly.

@Acorn, @Sara-S, @Kenora, and @WendyW, thank you for the kind words on the coat. I'd love a coat like it also.

@WendyW, knitting mittens for a doll is fiddly as they are so tiny. I use fine yarn and 2 mm needles. I'll probably start them next week as I'm knitting a sweater for the dolls right now. I'm using up left over yarn from other projects (mittens included).

The mittens haven't been knit yet. I got two patterns to test so they became the priority.

I did make a dress for the dolls during sewing time. I was going to test the pattern but it got published before I had a chance to cut it out. Here it is.

And the surprise is a bow in the back.

I finished another doll's pattern (tested it). It was a fun and cute pattern to do. Kit is wearing it as it is from the 1930's and her era.

I did buttonholes in the back. I am going to do more of these as I have figured out how to do them nicely using tear away stabilizer. I have scraps of it in the sewing room.

I didn't use the bow that was in the pattern but used organza ribbon instead.

And the Bib Front Regency dress is done. It was a lot of work but I took it one step at a time.

The fabric frayed a lot so I had to handle it carefully. But I do love the pattern.

Thank you @sewingj  and @Tamnymore for the kind words on the doll clothes.

The buttonhole saga began when I wanted to do more of them on doll clothes. I interfaced the buttonhole area and did 6 practice buttonholes. They were okay. I then decided to try tear away stabilizer as I have a lot of scraps as I do machine embroidery. I put it on the back of the fabric and the next few trials were perfect. You could use coffee filters instead of tear away stabilizer. I always do a few practice buttonholes before I do the actual ones. That way I get the right size buttonhole for the buttons.

Next up is invisible zippers in doll dresses. That won't happen until the fabric stores reopen. I have very few zippers on hand. If the stores don't reopen by April 1, I'm going to have to break down and order online.

I made this cute dress once again using up scraps left over from the last reading pillow I made in early March. I printed the pattern at 95% so it would fit the Gotz dolls I own. The skirt length is the same as for the 18" dolls but I added a strip of fabric to the bottom, turned it up leaving a tiny piece showing for an element of surprise.

The back has the bow on it and it finishes off the dress.

There is no fabric left as the tiny bits went into the trash can.

I had fun sewing this Mary Laura dress. I started May 1 and finished it yesterday. I did a lot of research, viewing pictures, and thinking of how this dress would have been sewn in 1879. When I finished it, I was impressed that Ma made not one but two dresses for her girls.

The dress is not historically true as Laura and Mary's dresses did not have a gathered flounce on them. They were flat. The pocket is historically correct as you can see it in the pictures I found.

And I am assuming the back was closed with buttons that may have come off an old dress. I'm sure nothing was ever wasted.

And the photo of Laura and Mary wearing their dresses.

I have the pattern for Carrie's dress and am hoping to make it later this month. I need to find the fabric in the stash.

I spent some time sewing DH a shirt and decided to use up the scraps to make Kit a summer wardrobe. The goal was to use only left over fabric from other projects. The check is left over from DH's shirt, the chambray from ?? and the yarn from other doll's knitting. I had to buy snaps and buttons as I ran out or had none. The ladybug button was in the stash.

I made 9 pieces for Kit's wardrobe and one pattern for everything but the jacket and hat. I have to say the pattern was well used.

It was a fun and satisfying project after having had a failed project and burn out. I actually took a month off from pattern testing as I was not doing well with the stress of having to meet short deadlines. I'm back again with a goal of only 1 item a month.

Another dress done. This time for Anna. It's the start of her wardrobe. I chose to pin tuck the bodice and do a patchwork skirt.

The back skirt has the two green panels sewn together so a lesson learned for the next time I make this for the other dolls.

Anna's second item for her wardrobe is a pair of overalls. This pair has a bit of a girlie look to it with a bow on the front. It was fun to make with a lot of pieces that went together like a puzzle. Not hard to do - just had to read the instructions carefully before I sewed the pieces together.

Next is a blouse by the same designer. It has a lot of pieces in it and I'm looking forward to making it.

I finished a test sweater and it has a sailor collar. I like it but doubt if I'd knit it again.

I also made Anna a pair of capri length leggings. A very simple sew but the pattern fits the dolls to perfection.

There was enough fabric left over from the children's capris (bought) that I made 2 more pairs for Lily and Laura.

I finished and outfit and a sweater this month. The outfit is a 1940's dress and jacket designed by one of my favorite designers - Keepers Dolly Duds.

I've had the fabric for 2 years as it is hard to find a yellow plaid fabric. I matched the green for the jacket. The bodice is white and the collar is the plaid.

I also knit a sweater and quite love it also. The yarn was bought 7 years ago for socks but is does not have merino wool in it. Hence why it is used for the dolls.

I'm now finishing a sweater I started a long time ago. I'm almost finished the 2nd sleeve but have a lot more knitting to do on the body -- cross over collar and back button bands. It will get done one day.

My first attempt at dressmaking was on dolls with of course everything sewn my hand (I wish I could go back and look at the stitches).  They were from memory around 9 inches high.

These look gorgeous, so realistic, they are really are for looking at and not playing with.

@Gernella, thank you. The clothes I make for the dolls are for doll collectors and are to be admired and not played with. I did give a young girl a doll and some lovely outfits and she took great care of them as she was so excited to get them as a gift when we moved to Nova Scotia. That girl was about 10 years old. Our friend's granddaughter was 3 when I gave her a doll and she loved it and took awesome care of it too. Our friend helped her look after the doll so she learned early on how to handle it.

My paternal grandmother had a sister who had never had children so her house was so immaculate that to me it was a palace, especially as ours was totally different, toys everywhere etc.

On one particular call I was doing some roaming while my mum was talking and in a formal sitting room I found a doll, beautifully dressed (we're talking 50's here @Ann).  Anyway when she realised what I'd  found she said that I could hold her but I could only sit on the settee and I couldn't leave the room.  We didn't go for every often but I always aimed for that doll to sit with her on my knee.  I often wonder what happened to it when she died or if that was 'her' child.

I have heard of women taking the 'new born' dolls for walks in prams and I suppose if it is missing in your life it gives comfort for maybe something you can't have.

@Gernella, I wonder about people with dolls also. A couple of ladies I know have collected every Gotz doll for years. They have a huge collection each and it amazes me how they do it. Another lady has limited her numbers and writes short stories of her doll's adventures. Always a lesson in them.

The new born babies are not to my liking and I guess some people love them as their own. There are others who have to take their dolls everywhere they go; shopping, to the AG store, on holidays. Mine get to stay home in the sewing room.

My dolls are models for outfits I make. I was going to sell the outfits and may down the road. Right now I am collecting them for the dolls just in case I decide to give them away. I would like each one to have a wardrobe if I choose to do that. I love my dolls but I think I have enough to keep me busy.

Your dolls are lovely, Ann. Lovely styling and presentation.  :)  Sadly my granddaughter was never into dolls that much although she did love a little doll I made of her in her bridesmaid's outfit. It soon needed a hair restyling though!  :S

I adored dolls as a child and I recall how gently my mum always handed them to me showing me how to treat them with respect and love. In her later years she developed dementia and I got her a doll dressed in Victorian dress. She loved it and I saw that same gentleness when she held it on her lap cooing to it. Those times are cruel to live through and hard to dismiss from your immediate memory when thinking of the person for several years after so I try to remember her like that then push back into the memories of when she was herself all the time.

@CraftyIrish, a good place to start is Oh Sew Kat (https://ohsewkat.wordpress.com). A lot of her patterns are easy to make and if you look under the tab "Tutorials and Pattern Hacks" she show what she does with her patterns. Part way down the page is the free doll skirt which you get when you sign up for her emails (and they are great emails). In the Tutorials and Pattern Hacks she shows how she added lace to that free skirt. You can go to her Etsy shop through her blog. Pixie Faire is a site that many doll designers sell their patterns at. Some are easy and some are intermediate and some are difficult.

@Marniesews, thank you for the kind words on the styling and presentation. I do this for me as we have one grandson. He's almost 14 and into soccer and swimming. I understand you about a parent with dementia. My mom had it and it was a difficult time in our lives.

I made another outfit for the dolls. This one is a Christmas outfit so I went with something with red in it. Actually the jumper fabric is from the Christmas section in our quilting store.

They said it is an easy pattern but matching plaids or checks is not easy. It would be a fairly easy pattern to make if you used a print.

I'm not happy with the pictures as the jumper does not seem to be centered on the doll.

I'll have to redress the doll and get the jumper centered on her body. It does fit perfectly and the blouse is linen so not slippery for moving the jumper into place.

Hi @Ann
Just to let you know you have new company with the doll's clothes making.  :)

I've just bought an Our Generation doll for my friend's 5 year-old girl as a Christmas gift with a plan to make a few clothes to go with it (she already has one doll of the same make with different coloured hair & eyes) and then work on a wardrobe with a wider range of accessories for her birthday in May. I've been really lucky to find a used doll for £10 locally and when it was described as in excellent condition it was very true. Not a mark on her , pristine clothes and the long straight hair looked like it had never been brushed or messed up at all. She's identical to the one she already has so I won't be giving it to her but she'll be an ideal model for trying on and fitting the clothes.

This is such a welcome new project for me as my DGD (now only two months off 18) was never into dolls. Perhaps the previous owner of my clothes model is the same. I've been waiting a long time for this. Another friend has a 9-month old DGD so there may even be hope for the future too.

I've just got a Craftsy $5 subscription so now I'm watching their lessons on dolls clothes making and already have a few free patterns from Happy Bankky Crafty Mom and Pixie Faire to start off with. I'm pleased to see that the sloper pattern included in the class materials shouldn't need much tweaking either. I may well look back through your dresses here for some great ideas and inspiration if that's okay but strictly no direct copying. Any advice on good tutorials etc would be much appreciated. I've joined one of the facebook groups for 18" dolls - boy is there a lot of talent and inspiration there too!

@Marniesews, I'm so excited you are joining me on the doll clothes journey. I don't mind if you directly copy or not. We all do it. We all do it on occasion as we love something and just have to do it.

One of nicest websites is O Sew Kat (https://ohsewkat.wordpress.com/). People have used her when they started sewing doll clothes as her patterns are easy but classy. Down the right hand side of her web page is her free pattern that you get for signing up for her newsletter which is a nice newsletter. I read them all plus look at her blog. Her hacks and tutorials are wonderful. I bought the Sixth Grade Skirt, Popsicle Top, and the Backyard bibs. Her Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice dress is wonderful and she has a hack here (https://ohsewkat.wordpress.com/2016/02/23/step-it-up-popsicle-tops/) on how to add button placket to the dress and the Popsicle Top. You can see the dress here (https://ohsewkat.wordpress.com/2020/10/29/kats-favorite-fall-doll-clothes/). It is so darn cute done in a batik. I look at her outfits for inspiration as she puts together some really cute outfits in such perfect fabrics.

I have also looked at Rosie's Doll Clothes Patterns (https://www.rosiesdollclothespatterns.com/) as a friend got all the videos, etc. when she learned how to sew doll clothes. I didn't care for the ones I got as much as O Sew Kat's.

Are you looking at Joan Hind's lessons? She has some really good information on sewing doll clothes. It was through her that I learned about flat sewing doll clothes. I also learned about fitting from her also which was very useful.

Have tons of fun and I am excited to see your outfits. And remember it is okay to collect dolls at our age. It is very enjoyable having them to sew for. I have Addy Walker arriving sometime around the end of the month. She is African American but when she hits this house, she will be African Nova Scotian. I am beyond excited to sew for her as she is an 1860's historical doll.

I can certainly see why you like the O Sew Kat patterns. The Sugar & Spice dress is charming. I've already seen Rosie's site and there were so many things shouting for my attention that it's become very clear to me that I'll have to reign in my pattern buying desires or I may spend way too much on them! If I can manage to resist them initially I may experiment a fair bit with the free patterns and Joan Hinds' slopers to begin with and select more detailed patterns after that.

I've collected a few fat quarters over the years although some have been used for masks now and the patterns on some will be out of scale for doll's clothes but I've enough to begin with. It's just occurred to me that the polycotton fabric that I normally avoid might be a better option for dolls because being thin they'll gather more easily around tiny waists and wrists. Any suggestions for good sources of fabrics for doll's clothes? I particularly like matching prints with plain yokes or bands on hems and they seem easy to find in polycotton. It's a good way to use up the little scraps too. Lawn would be perfect of course but I'll have to keep an eye out for bargains. Inconveniently my stash consists mostly of lycra, stretch mesh, organza and net along with lots of crin!

I don't really have a desire to become a collector at this stage, I'm more happy just now with the idea of making the clothes for children to play with -- we badly need to declutter as it is especially with all my dance fabric stash so that's definitely not to be encouraged!  :o
Title: Re: Sewing For Dolls
Post by: Ann on December 09, 2020, 22:13:49 PM
@Marniesews, I keep myself reigned in a lot but get lots of free patterns as I test for designers. O Kat Sews is one site I will allow myself the occasional pattern. The Sugar and Spice dress with the front band is easy to adapt on any pattern. I have a Butterick pattern that I can do it on. I find some of the simple patterns are the best to adapt. I sew the more detailed ones that when I want that one of a kind look.

I use a lot of cotton though I have some that is 50/50 cotton/poly. I buy my fabric in a brick and motar store as I supposrt a local business. She is a discount store with 6500 bolts of fabric in stock. I use to buy deeply discounted fabrics in the big box fabric store I worked in as I did all the discounting and would put the fabric I wanted away as I discounted it. If I want to do coordinating fabrics, I buy from a series as it is the best way to get that look. But, when I have the time I will look and play with the bolts of fabrics to get the look I want.

I am working my way through the stash and am pleased with how much I have used this year. Less of the doll fabric so it will be more of a focus next year. If you are using up your dance fabric, go to Pixie Faire and look under the Freebie tab for free patterns. There are some nice patterns and you can do swim suits to make little dance outfits for the dolls.

Most of all, have fun sewing doll clothes. I'm sure the little girls who get what you make will be thrilled.

The first outfit of the year has been done and Addy is so happy to model it. It is the Civil War dress by Keepers Dolly Duds and it took me 6 afternoons to make it. I took my time and had to do the cuffs on the sleeves twice as I wasn't paying attention.

She looks lovely Ann. I've been quite surprised by the amount of patterns there are for historical styles. If I were sewing for my own collection rather than for gifts for children, I'd be very tempted because they look so impressive, perhaps the standard of them is shown most effectively in their more complex styling.   :)
Title: Re: Sewing For Dolls

@Marniesews, there are a lot of patterns with historical styles. I think they are mainly for people who collect dolls rather than for children who play with them. Some of the purists won't buy hand made outfits as they collect only the doll's clothes and accessories.

I finished an Edwardian era dress yesterday. It is another Keepers Dolly Duds pattern and it is cute. Though an intermediate pattern, I had pre-thought out the steps as I read the pattern. When do I serge the seams was my biggest pre planning issue. I got it right this time.

I had seen this pattern a few months ago and was hoping it was going to be a test pattern. I read she will have 4 or 5 more patterns to have tested in the spring. They are based on Little Women.

@Ann That dress looks lovely! I think the blue works nicely with the red with white polka dots.

Another dress is done and in the books. This one is called the Civil War Day Dress. It was a lot of work and there were some steps left out that made it more challenging. But I will know better the next time.

Another dress will be made next month. I have some ideas if I can find the lace I need for it. In the mean time, I'm going to sew some simple doll clothes mixed in with other items.

I bought a second hand doll too,  inspired by @Ann.. I have no-one to sew for either, except me, but I used to love sewing for my dolls when I was young. Previously I bought male and female 12" dolls after making clothes for a friend.

@toileandtrouble, I have 12 dolls and no one to sew for either. I just enjoy doing it for the dolls and myself. I'm adding one more this month as I want to have a second doll of African heritage.

I can't wait to see what you will be sewing for your doll.

I did a 2nd test pattern this month and this one is called "Meg" in honor of Little Women. The blouse is an intermediate pattern but wasn't too challenging as I have done most of the techniques on the last two dresses. The yoke on the skirt was a easier than I thought. The skirt was easy.

The skirt center back seams have a curve in them and are a pain to serge and look tacky when zig zagged. I have started to do a Hong Kong seam finish on them. They look so nice done that way.

The back of the blouse closes with button and the skirt with a snap. The sleeves have plackets and cuffs. I closed them with a snap and sewed a button on top.

Addy says this outfit reminds her of spring.

Thank you ladies for you kind words on the outfit. It is greatly appreciated.

I completed and outfit today that is more modern. The skirt is an easy basic pattern that I made in an expensive faux leather. I knew I wanted something fancy to go with the sweater and beret I had knit sometime last year. I'm happy with the results and Kit is proud to be modeling it.

@Ann  The Meg dress looks remarkably like 'Amy's school jumper' by Keepers Dolly Duds.  Of course Amy would have   want something very much like her older sister!

@toileandtrouble, Meg would have wanted something like her older sister.

I made another dress for the dolls. It is from a Butterick pattern and I added sleeves. But, the pattern needs some alterations. I did do the neckline (3/8" seam vs 1/4") and it fits much nicer. But the shoulder seams need to be 3/8" at the neck going to 1/4" at the shoulder. With those issues figured out, I will make my notes so I can make the dress again at a later date.

The cumberband stitching is beautiful and well designed. Sewing it together was something else. Adding the ties was horrid. Not long enough and you pleat and stitch them in place. Raw edges which I hate.

I am keeping the dress as a reminder of how much I've learned about couture sewing for dolls. And it is a dress Lea can wear at Christmas time.

The red dress looks good but I agree with you about raw edges!  I would want to alter that.  How is the black stitching done?  Is it hand embroidery?
Title: Re: Sewing For Dolls
Post by: Ann on March 03, 2021, 17:18:11 PM
@toileandtrouble, the black stitching (really it's a shiny green) is machine embroidered. The lady did a wonderful job of digitizing it but how it is put together is not well thought out.

I'm not sure how I would do the ties again. I really have to think about the process in my head over a long period of time. I'm thinking longer and narrower and maybe one pleat rather than two. But how do I put it in so it won't have raw edges showing. I may have to do a simple mock up when I get closer to an idea.

I finished this outfit on March 13 and I have a love/hate relationship with it. The skirt and top are beautifully constructed and have some wonderful sewing techniques in its construction. The bustle feels like an after thought. Not lined and the instructions left a little to be desired.

I did not get the ribbons put on the sleeve bands or the front which tells me I'm done with this outfit for the moment. The color is hard to match so I will have to take a fabric sample with me to get the ribbon.

The back of the top fits to perfection but the bustle tends to hide it. The bustle bow needs to be redone as it isn't centered and I would like get that done correctly.

This pattern is labeled as advanced and I'm happy to say that I made it without any issues. I will not be making it again for a long time time as I have other patterns I'm looking at making.

Another test pattern done and I like this pattern except for the pockets. It is called the Bowling Pin Dress 1918.

I will make this again using two fabrics in a strong color. I will leave off the pockets though and have fun with the pattern. Once you get the collar done it is an easier make if you don't have to do the pockets.

I tested knits on my new sewing machine and I'm impressed with how it handles the fabric. I did stitch parts of it slowly (neckline) so it wouldn't stretch out of shape. I also tested the machine and how it responds to knits and matching patterns. Great job on that too.

I love the jazzy knit, what a cool vibe she has in her shades and sandals.  :D

I've switched over to my little Pfaff for sewing doll's clothes in knits. I really need to use a walking foot for them with the old Berninas which is very clumpy for such little pieces. The Pfaff's IDT is a dream for that though.

@Marniesews, the fabric is children's leggings I bought at a big box store. The fabric is quite nice compared to what I can buy in the fabric store in our province.

Pfaff's IDT is a dream I had a Pfaff with it and I was sorry when I wore the machine out. The Juki has a lovely built-in walking foot and I love using it with knits.

Those gals do look cool!

I'm a little jealous of your dolls, @Ann  . The Our Generation ones I'd seen until the last week all had the same face mould and the pale blond is by far the most common I've seen as used dolls for sale so any group quickly develops overtones of Midwich Cuckoos (https://deadline.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/shutterstock_editorial_5877133a-e1593772543688.jpg?w=681&h=383&crop=1).  :[ Nothing dreadful people, just don't look if you find dolls a bit freaky.

Getting hold of American Girl dolls in the UK is very expensive, even as used – the only used one I've seen for sale was more than a brand new deluxe version of OG. I just missed getting another OG with a different face mould only last week  :'( but I'm picking up another good condition used doll tomorrow (a more golden blond). It's for a new project - more news later when it's underway.

@Marniesews, used AG dolls in Canada are expensive and I’ve had to really look for them at good prices. Leah and Julie were a bit more than I wanted but Julie is original and Leah is discontinued.  Other than a couple of new dolls, most of the other dolls were reasonably priced. My Gotz dolls are expensive with exchange, duties, and shipping, hence I stopped after 4.

Can’t wait to see your new project.

@Ann you mentioned that you like to use snap fasteners for closures rather than the narrow velcro. Which sizes do you use most?

It seems people don't have the patience to sew them on these days, I suppose hiding the stitches is a nuisance in comparison to the acceptable sight of the top of a pronged snap although it can ruin things if you misplace them. The selection of the traditional sew on type here is sadly becoming much reduced.
Title: Re: Sewing For Dolls
Post by: Ann on May 04, 2021, 16:43:38 PM
@Marniesews, I use 7 and 9 mm snaps and love to hand sew them on. I get both Prym and Dritz brand. I sew them on like shown in this video (https://www.threadsmagazine.com/2012/03/05/video-how-to-attach-hooks-eyes-snaps). Lots of people are using poppers but I haven't moved over towards them as I'm not sure if I want to buy lots of them for the different colors. And like you said, you can ruin an outfit if you get one half in the wrong spot. Trust me, I would.

Me too. My mum taught me to use buttonhole stitch for these and hooks and eyes as well. Nothing more secure and tends to look neater too.

Not many people seem to do that though. I suppose that's why so many on the doll's clothes groups say it's nigh impossible to sew a snap behind a button (or vice versa) – not if you sew the button on first and then use buttonhole stitch to sew the snap on!  ;)

That's such a pretty design and could work nicely in other lengths and fabrics for contemporary dresses too.

The sleeves remind me of Josefina's Christmas Dress (http://agplaythings.com/AG%20Patterns/DollDressPatterns.html) but I do love the gathered bodice. Whose is that one?

This is and Thimbles and Acorn that she has revamped. There is a front wrap version also that has ruffles and a collar. With a tight time line, I chose the simple version.

There is a difference between this one and Josefina's Christmas dress sleeves. Josefina's is two piece and this is one piece. But both are from different eras which makes how the sleeves are constructed different. But, overall there are a lot of similarities.

I've made 2 more pairs of leggings using a different pattern (source unknown) and a t-shirt. I'm learning a lot about sewing with knits and how I have to handle them.

I dug out a 3rd pair of children's leggings for this outfit and they remind me of pajamas.

I made the 2nd pair of leggings inside out and noticed it before I was completely finished. I took them apart carefully and remade them yesterday. They go with the t-shirt I had made previously.

I have just enough of both leggings left to make sleeveless t-shirts. That will be 3 pairs of children's leggings used up. I have about 4-5 pairs left to make into leggings and t-shirts.

They do look good. Of course so many essential wardrobe items these days are in knits so they're essential for modern dolls too. I rediscovered the joy of sewing wovens again from the masks and doll's clothes. I just had no desire to do that until last year and the lovely doll's stuff is really boosting that. Another joy they have given me. :D Did you mention which legging pattern you used? I couldn't spot that scanning the previous posts.

Yes, when it comes to knits you do have to get out of some of the old habits borne out of decades of sewing wovens. Just learning to handle the knits really gently so not to stretch them during construction is the thing above all I think. Even then, after 7 years of nearly only knits I still had problems with the doll's basic turn under armholes & necklines stretching out... but not since I started sewing a stay stitch line virtually on the 6mm sewing line and using that as the guide to turn  just enough so it doesn't quite show on the edge.

I bought the leggings from Walmart and they cost $4.00. I got XL in the girl's size. I dug out a pair of denim/chambray blue ones and they are an XL womens from the same store. I will get lots of fabric from that pair.

I am testing a pattern that has a knit top and 14 gore woven skirt. I'm doing it in chambray colors and seeing what I learned on my own works using a designer's pattern. So far so good.

I finished another test pattern that will be published after May 17. Both pieces are really cute. The skirt was easy to make though it did take time as you sew 14 pieces together. I am going to wet the skirt and let it dry without playing with it so it isn't as bell shape. I like the relaxed look.

I spent a lot of time working on a bodice for the Gotz dolls. I used two patterns and tweaked them until I was happy with the fit. I did that because I wanted a dress with puffy sleeves for these dolls. I have sleeveless and smooth fitting sleeves. I did 3 takes on the bodice making a muslin each time. On take 4, I used good fabric and am happy with the results.

I have to copy the pattern once more so I have a good final copy. I also want to make the sleeves a bit longer to see what they look like when I sew the next version.

I do like this one Ann. Lovely fresh fabric and a great fit. I can see from the variation in size and silhouette that it would take quite a bit of alteration from a standard 18" doll pattern.

I'm just venturing into the Erin Hentzel books (Doll Days! and Doll Dress Boutique). Do you have either? The blouse I'm doing now seems much too wide for my Our Generation dolls and the neckline stands proud of the shoulders but it looks rather like that in the photo so I'll be doing a bit of tweaking myself. I'm hoping all those dresses in the Boutique book are going to be nearer the mark.

I do like your Gotz doll. Lovely to have the pose-able arms and their faces are very realistic, not so idealised and very full of character. She's gorgeous in her new dress.

I am just finishing a Liberty Jane pattern, I thought it would be good for me to try being very accurate.  How do you handle tiny short seam of 1cm or so?  It is so difficult to get them neatly under the presser foot. Any tips?
Title: Re: Sewing For Dolls

@toileandtrouble, they are a pain. You can use a leader fabric to help you so it goes through like a bigger piece of fabric. Quilters use it when they start sewing pieces together. I would finish them with a sealant as you will never get them through the serger. I've done that before.

@Marniesews, I don't have either one of those books but have two on doll dressmaking that include patterns. Most are vintage pattern ideas and I really should look at them and make some of the outfits. I got them at a used book store we frequent.

I'm putting the binding on placemats right now so won't be looking at doll clothes for a few days as I need to get them done and photographed for the shop the main fabric came from. I'll be watching TV a lot while I hand sew the binding down.

The wrap dress is done and the first thing I realized was the back seam needed to be removed when placing it on the fold. I didn't do it so have a seam down the back. Doing it as instructed made the back neckline too baggy. Other than that, it was a fairly easy sew.

I'm done for now sewing with knits. Time to do some piecing of a doll's quilt. Something easy so I can practice free motion quilting on it.

Happy with what I have done - knit top, skirt, and woven top. Next will be another top and capris made in a plain chambray. The top will reverse to the print in the skirt.

I've done 2 test patterns in July. There were no patterns to test for the longest time so I did the first one to meet my monthly requirements.

I am not a great fan of how mine turned out as I was using what I had in the stash.

The 2nd pattern came out just over a week later and I had to make it. I've been waiting for this pattern for quite a while now (months to be exact).

The dress is my new favourite basic dress pattern. I'll use it when I don't want a gathered skirt. The pleats are easy to make and really cute.

I spent a lot of time on the jacket as it was quite detailed to make. Instead of lining it, it had a facing that I did a Hong Kong seam finish on.

The outfit is really cute and I'm pleased with the end result.

With all the clipping of the scallops, I need to sweep the sewing room floor and tidy up my mess. It is back to quilting for the rest of the month.

Quite a contrast to leggings @Ann !

The green one has the feel of traditional dress. Then, as soon as she pops on that cute little detailed jacket over her summer dress she looks like she's all set for a trip out with Aunty to a smart cafe for Afternoon Tea.  :)

I did another test pattern and spent a lot of time fussy cutting - 2.5 hours to be exact. But it was worth it.

The back has the wow factor for sure.

I also made the bonus tote and did the embroidery on it. There are a lot of embroidery files but I only had a limited amount of fabric and wanted to showcase the print so I didn't do any other embroidery.

I'm going to play with this pattern in September and use a chambray and lace trim. Seeing how it will look done like that. I may even do some embroidery on the sleeves. Only if I have enough fabric.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. This one was an interesting sew. People want it to be lined but the designer felt it was one step too many. It might have been.

Testing is done for this month so it's back to making Xmas gifts. I hope to cut out 1.3 meters of fabric today.

I have wanted to sew this blouse pattern forever. I cut it out when making DH his last shirt and then had not time to make it. I made time the last two days to sew it up. It is a lovely pattern called Bella Blouse and can be found on Pixie Faire.

I spent a lot of time fussy cutting it and it was worth every minute. The lines match up perfectly all the way around including the darts and tucks.

I will make this blouse again as it is well constructed and fits the doll well. It has two sizes for the dolls for a better fit. I cut the bigger size as this is one of my fatter dolls.

I did another test pattern for September. It is the 1930's Frock by Keepers Dolly Duds. A cute pattern but a lot of fabric in the front bodice and sleeves -- 5 layers to be exact.

I do like the dresses from this era. They are quite cute.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    I made these jeans for my doll. No idea what the fabric is, it is too thin to be useful for real clothing but scales up nicely for the doll. It is really fiddly, changing from sewing to top stitching every 5 minutes and I'm afraid not as neat as it ought to be. I could probably have made some for myself in the time.
I did two pairs at once -  helped consolidate what I learnt about working small and not much longer than making one pair.  A neighbour's daughter has a similar doll, I gave her the second pair. Got a great smile!

I was happy to get back to sewing historical clothing. This one is from the late 1700's. The skirt and apron were the easy parts, the top and hat were more time consuming. But overall, I am happy with the outfit.

Without the hat and apron.

@toileandtrouble, I quite like the Liberty Jane jeans pattern and have made it several time. I like how the elastic is at the back so the front sits flat.

The outfit certainly does make one feel ladylike wearing it. There is another colonial era pattern out to proof read and test that I will make later on. I'll just proof read the pattern as I have to do some Xmas sewing.

When you are test sewing, do you get to try the 'final' version, or is that compiled from the testers comments?
I have just bought a pattern and I cannot make the pieces line up as they should.  I'm amazed no-one else has reported it, so I am thinking  a mistake got in after the testing stage.

We don't get to do the final version though the designers are to fix all the mistakes we find which includes pieces that don't line up. That is one that testers seem to be the fussiest about. I've shouted out about pieces not fitting together properly and I've cut them out in the next version to see if they do fit properly.

If you bought the pattern from Pixie Faire, log in, go to the pattern and put it in a review. It should be seen by the designer who should put it back out to be retested. Unless it was an older pattern (before my time) and it wasn't tested like they are today. I knit a sweater from one Pixie Faire designer and it was full of mistakes. I figured it out and left a review that it needed testing again. The designer is no longer with them and it will never get fixed. Personally I think that pattern should be pulled due to the mistakes.

@Ann Thank you, I will put it in the review. I have been in touch with the 'support' team, but they don't seem to understand what I am saying.  There are a couple of other things I think ought to be changed but that is the worst.

Finished the  coat  ( with the shortened facing!). It is pretty cute.  Now going to make another with a perfect fabric I found as the lining.  Must make a list of points to send on feedback too.
Just bought a Kwiksew pattern for 18" dolls.  That is what it says on the back, near the fabric requirements. On the front, it says 14" doll clothes. No mention of size on the pattern paper.  The pieces look right for 18" but I have sent an email to the supplier so they can report it back..
Title: Re: Sewing For Dolls
Post by: Ann on October 18, 2021, 16:49:00 PM
@toileandtrouble, it is crazy how things are not checked for size. I'm sure people who wanted it for a 14" doll would be very upset to see the pattern pieces are too large for said doll. And if you can't return (like here in Canada) you're out the money until you finish dealing with the company.

I finished another test pattern called 1930 Rising Star. A cute pattern that fits well. I chose a pale color as I was digging through the doll's stash as I'm not buying any more fabric this month. At first I was unhappy as I felt it had no wow factor but it is growing on me.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiLctE80W_HDrDFiO1dvN653I6elQlZFk9zJPUlCfdQQrz1fVg4XXcMyOQsAk5lOiSY5UBjsbtsuPwhiJWrD4Gdy_NPu25iWfPRhFTq8YASRVhY0kHcDnCyqFY0N6T3f9ousgg4QloD8LFebc1YFYuKugckQu92WDnWqauTLimRPUhaxk61DA=w300-h400)

I have to tack the very last points at the back to the body of the fabric as they stand up. I've done that in the past to make collars lie flatter.

Two more patterns will be coming out to test and one is Beth's dress from Little Women. I will be making that one for sure.

That is lovely @Ann . My poor Noelle is still in a drawer, naked to the world. I took her out of her original clothes as they were colorful, pink tee, purple cord skirt, some turquoise stuff, obviously very modern, and her vinyl was getting stained. She does at least have a nice blanket for company. I got her Christmas pj's and robe cut out way back when but that's it.

So very nice to see your steady flow of dresses, @Ann . Lots of work in those sleeves but very nicely done.  :)

I'm afraid mine have been abandoned (for now) as other Christmas sewing and stuff happening has unavoidably dragged me away. I'm disappointed not to have completed the sets I'd planned but that's life, they don't complain fortunately but I do feel a bit guilty at times.

@Marniesews, I am doing less for the dolls as I'm in the midst of Xmas sewing. I still have to sew a test dress for this month and make a lobster bustle. I will be sewing these as I clean the sewing room as I do a heavy duty cleaning in December. I rip the room apart area by area and clean it, reorganize it, and swear I'll be sewing the stash until the cows come home. The amount of stash has decreased a lot which is nice and I'm hoping I will be seeing more bareness on the shelves or smaller piles when I organize the fabrics.

I need to look and see what I want to sew next -- maybe more pyjamas for dolls. I have flannelette out on the cutting table to make them. I may have to do that this weekend.

I finished the 1870's Bustle dress and it was a lot of work. I do like it though.

I didn't put lace or trim on the outfit as I didn't have anything I wanted to use or not enough of what I wanted to use. It turned out really cute with just the white cuffs as contrast.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi_24JSn-bLshdMo76JL3IOyyNx91SQGBXYz6UUNhWQj0vpEzN1_Ge2RidDFH4R5x1qxguY-u451KYgioCmm3WwHrjYGYP76VP1HuSDmH20-OFxbeX4QSkbdhH0pFN5KgQ-RJ5FHbbQp94jhrXBAQNSXwtuAJwcjODG_ebk_5heiOrEmAW5Nw=w300-h400)

The bustle is held up with a piece of twill tape that you sew in place with a button. It took me a bit to figure out how to get it looking nice but it worked. The back of the top is long with a pleat and it folds out really neatly over the bustle.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh_jKB2x8KiohDNZKsqlqT2JC7oo2LaVYS01lxbqpB2OFma4gRFWqI8RtEX9TjlWjXEvx9SIpQKWRLMXrkCMsE6hV6-l1oS-TlbA0rQNaC8qoWkRZGjntxQUbvYz3aCX3iF7mvrfLe2CXZkA8kytj4m-zJ0jTn-xLFioIHh1XRf28tFUDXUFg=w300-h400)

There is another dress that is even more intricate to test but I am not sure I will get it done before the test deadline. I have to make a lobster tail bustle to go under it first. But I may start it and work on it when I have time. I do like the end result. I also have to look for 6 meters of lace for it also.

After 3 weeks of hard slugging, I finally got another historical dress completed. I had to make a bustle and petticoat to go with it which is included in the 3 weeks.

The dress was suppose to have 6 meters of lace on it but I didn't have any in cream colored and the day I was in the quilt shop, it was so crazy that I didn't look at lace. So this outfit is very plain but, in my opinion, stunning.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhFbw3CTPrPTXHW1Ojc4s7SKlSScWNnrxBUqaMrfr2LDr7SJO0-AmVi_ci1G6kdHCKw8Htq5Dv-MyC8FhL0odRJzjZuBMn6Z1WSAldV0Sg-2cHJOxW1FM3agcbROlecyCL-2b1AeCjvFkxufSnXeJsynDKeQluixatyug9Eaw3-Q7GDNx5tJw=w300-h400)

The back is made up of rows of ruffles and I love how they look over the lobster tail bustle and petticoat.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjFchrg6uJyFXdE9RTuO2sdGClcqCvAgf8aVY4WCcP1HgXrCMpvKaNDVIR4TbtZYMYG7pFZtJXmfQTxoDjKLn7py_ptY3FQSWHgPBkISnnDckAgEdILfKawNw5R1GXSx2lXXhbk7Zok2f1jzW1SgpPeuZXPL_vVnwBZG6jZdsAdD-IbmwK59Q=w300-h400)

The 9 AG dolls I own are in historical costumes ranging from the 1700's to 1930. I have taken a temporary leave from the testing groups as DH is having some mental issues that is probably dementia related. I also need to get back to other sewing as I need to continue making Xmas gifts for this coming Christmas.

I finished another outfit for the dolls. This was an easy pattern that is well drafted. I enjoyed making it very much as it was a bit of brightness during our latest snow storms.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhwQyspst6eLDzc3MN--rck6wiCKHj55rjNtM9hWG3fgw3hvUhOzI9TpxNxkW-nG5heBMVrg1aXOban98IZ2Wb-Q4gs77gTWk6cWeXjQUAg6Lf8-QCB9xMh_GrI24kadkIhjqWTocQsw9mpR1dB9K1JeC92AqRKjmpAqhUgs9_1Y9VxIp8m2g=w300-h400)

It is a halter top and I do like how it fits the dolls.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgNTQ4SwTP-EK4UZTGmE5fRFke7nDQqtf-20Ka15wB67VEwyrNwrmKDVs3y6KQwmeJpfCl404Nz9m8LxqsQR7oz7eGQ5oo_syLMQS6dBnWGW-3Qc-tF8ABkMhJLdqT9sJJA4cfS8EdI-Dm7kI99VrSLIo78yw5cCg2yZkWPv_bub7HRpi_wvg=w300-h400)

I'm playing with this pattern as the designer has lots of ideas. One is for an apron that I will be making when I sew up the Christmas fabric scraps into mug rugs and a gift bag. I have plenty of trim and can make some if I need to.

I have a dress form rather than a doll and have a few samples made up in my shop to "show" my sewing skill (permission from designer with attribution of patterns).  I have to remake a few now, though.

@Kwaaked, I was going to buy a dress form but the shipping from the US to Canada was so high I scrapped it.

I made another dress to compliment a sweater set. It is a cute alternative to my basic dress pattern that has a gathered skirt. This one has pleats and a bit of gathering.

The dress is Keepers Dolly Duds Church Bazaar dress. It has a jacket that comes with it. I didn't make it this time but did when I tested the pattern.

It took me forever to find a form...even naked it makes a good decoration.  Sometimes I put it in my window when I make one of the fancier items.

@Kwaaked, she is one of the best designers. She sent in her last pattern to be tested and now is retiring. She lives about 50 km (30 miles) from where I live. I have never met her but we do buy fabric from the same quilt shop.

I'm afraid I've abandoned my doll clothes quite heartlessly for over 6 months while I've been obsessed with bag making.

You've done a stirling job representing the genre it has to be said.  :star: However, I have to make a rag doll for a friend's granddaughter very soon so I'll have to get back to that once the current bags are finished.

I got another outfit sewn and I'm loving it. The skirt is a pleated skirt that is attached to a yoke. Very easy to make and looks cute in both prints and plaids.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsoo9X3sp6vco8ZcTylBESZAPMMK1kftHRVdHNQBw5CgjjRkIUP2yI7Y5EjxWTvmMHTRSinYclnzrJJTUKcbGjWdywiQvUInHdgHIXb6Zw1YlLQrtugpBSOJ3iWoq0sEsyXVgLa-XmbcJDi5fAHi-1cfXQZwoP2-GInO9omKR3jQK0_Z0R0g/w300-h400/IMG_0283.jpeg)

The top was a pattern in the stash that was for testing and I didn't get it done. Thought I would try it and see if I liked it. The pleats at the front were difficult to make the first time I did them. I just didn't get them right at all. Carefully picked them out and did them again. When I got it they were easy. DH has had a lot of melt downs lately so I read the pattern and start sewing on it 3-4 hours later. The rest of the pattern was easy to follow and well drafted.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQW6wZWysscwK2u1cgAAm01ylaavmqnQLDouZWt-zeE2SwGqc98qDSTUNfw4kXtFLe39eo74fFYuDK-5ddHSKwtfbjYPKWmMNva6c5RPv4_RWTTYE5-osNEKD9tB818ocIyFNO7h_MSLlBCFxXCqIApSfX95PyF2fdqWuD6R0GFkVA2KQSlw/w300-h400/IMG_0316.HEIC)

I love the back of the top so much it has inspired me to make this as the top to go with an Edwardian walking skirt.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUu-q6S3w4WYsym-X4gm42sIHhlA7Kt-pb8VWS8Q3IhbJLJ3TfhCcXVfUDwws2xMQrMo-OL_c9ROwqVQvP0lZMrCtmCGVNxfulPGsBn5OO0vocAtEOjkI5qTEU_mXJI4UfyeITgpufQKv9AZuBroRu25OM9yxV7NJybHIpchTwAMSVtBJUNg/w300-h400/IMG_0311.HEIC)

I will be doing doing a few things differently as I'm using a different lace on it. I'm looking forward to sewing the next rendition of the pattern.

I got doll pj's made for a boy doll. I had made pj pants for DGS 3 Christmas's ago and this was the left over fabric. The pattern is Simplicity 5276.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCutiDndk6kdBk9HYcX19jTDh0AXBPvA-Bj66eR7VJeYNnW6UcTF5SCdPYMybPv9UU3GiyTngvMbO42fCTbKZnMMPk9GytMJEvsoakm_4hMrx-pw3-SGKSuXm77gNQ5HEiTaFnW7NLX8GJODZMnVyfvEYYXOlRjmQzZYbfv5QEnHiInib9Bg/w300-h400/IMG_0327.HEIC)

There was enough fabric to also make 2 flannel blankets which I did a rolled edge on and 2 pillows.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDe9nCy1jtDCpoMd5smi8XJyAkKs1v2diMe_FMO7cQPZklL0gtxWdDS2kS_yjyiNnzJORIDHrsDkbQ01m8g1vuN9w_mSPU73y0WBeO8JaRDMVs8KscAayvUkK_DQq-x9jvA4jN-CPAzTjdKwvPbahuLzEFw56UdlHBSohYkFJwHQWXzAnOAw/w400-h300/IMG_0330.HEIC)

I'm certainly happy to have this fabric used up and I know the little girl I sew for will be delighted to have pj's and blankets for her boy doll.

@Ann that is the pattern I used for my boy doll pyjamas, but mine have a definitely old fashioned look to them. I do like them though. At the moment I am using up the fabrics I bought for masks for doll skirts and dresses.  Must get pictures.  Isn't it satisfying to turn odd shaped remnants into something good?

@toileandtrouble, it is really satisfying to use up odd shapes of fabric into something good. I have used up left over fabric from DH's shirt fabrics which makes cute dresses and tops for the dolls.

One result- avert your eyes, Scottish ladies.  Not elegantly finished @Ann, just for fun. From some left over mask fabric, only shavings left now.  No pattern, just saw what pieces I had and juggled them. The inner waistband is pieced  from 5 tiny bits. The pleats are really small but have to go with what you have. I have a better pin, a bit larger and silver coloured. Must replace it. Fastened with a narrow strip of velcro.

I decided to make the Antheia top by again and I paired it with the Edwardian walking skirt that I tested a couple of years ago. It turned out exactly how I had visioned. The bonus -- finding 4 flower buttons in the exact color in the stash.

I made the 1914 Frock by Keepers Dolly Duds. It is made from the remaining fabric from the Edwardian walking outfit I made last month. This frock talked to me each step of the way and it certainly took some twists and turns along the way. Monochromatic was in and it presented some challenges. Lace was out, top stitching in for better definition of the pieces. Flowers were added to give some interest as it was pretty boring. I dug through both the machine embroidery thread and notions stash several times. The dress even called that I add flowers to a barrette to finish the look. In the end, I am happy with the results. So is Kit who is modeling the dress for me.

@toileandtrouble, I'm doing some Christmas gifts and gift pouches right now. Then onto a couple of bowl cozies for DD and DSIL's lunch bags. Next month I want to make a Regency era dress for the dolls. I'm looking forward to doing some sewing in this era as I loved the dresses worn in Bridgerton. The colors of those dresses aren't historically accurate and neither will be mine. I'm using up the stash at this time.

Hi @Ann hope you are having a relatively quiet time.  I have used some more bits from stash but yesterday picked up something new.  Two sample curtains at 50p each.  Absolutely no use except as fabric.  I am going to make some glamorous party dresses for my little friends dolls.  The colour is probably not going to show up  but they are shocking pink and deep burgundy.

@toileandtrouble, those drapes are perfect for doll clothes. Love the colors.

It has been pretty good here lately. DH has had a few restless nights for some unknown reason. Most days he has pain which we can't figure out. Could be from unknown stress or anxiety. When we walk around or do things, he is fine. I've done a bit of sewing and the one item I wanted to make was a flop. Not doll clothes. Today I won't sew as I'm tired but I do have a doll's sweater on the needles. Am testing it for a friend. Simple pattern that doesn't take a lot of attention to follow and can be tossed down quickly if I need to tail after DH if he's having a delusion.

Have fun sewing dresses. The sweater I'm knitting is for my little friend's dolls. I want to make her some more clothes plus do some Regency era dresses for my dolls.

I've had a few wonderful days of sewing. I got 2 items made for the little girl I sew for. I made a t-shirt which I glammed up with crystals.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6nktuzsdarfwKaLFJ7bab6dDGgSiv_ucPPXTH0I7bfCjSp_bcBobQ8_40O_zDTs56Yn0FhFa_n6fKUT_fZabu3gXi8CimIjTrnEWHGiWy1zzXYNW_UYsP8BlhdT2Lx4LUYmhJNLRBKX0eoI1Kd_73wJmCVzylwiCTZfvcCd7VtakzYNKhmg/w300-h400/IMG_0516.HEIC)

I also made a jumper which goes with the t-shirt. The pattern is well drafted and easy to make.

Not sure when I will start the Regency dress.

The Regency dress is completed and I forgot to post it. I used View C of Simplicity 9438. It took me quite a while to make as I have been dealing with DH who has Alzheimer's and, up until this past Saturday was been hard to deal with. I worked on it while respite was here or when I could sneak down to the sewing room and do 5-10 minutes.

I used the wrong side of a satin fabric I had. It looks like silk. I used left over flowers from some lace and hand appliqued them onto the front and around the hem on the back. Two were put on the bodice. I added pearls to the flowers that had none and restrung those flowers that had beads on them.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixp_nZ-ZQoqY3CcCBVoHFyYDD2xJlkmrrSYJlC4l69qKGqz7fdNDFUUmnc7WM-Nh5_yn5SkkVx-8EiJLqrCtQyQnvQLAcXAfMwbne9lIRP8jB0FxO-TwEez3NocriWlR9dWJJnDKIolcClsJGifZPWtMrTH52SSI41ucvl6tBKdTKmQ4C6ww/w354-h472/IMG_0649.HEIC)

The overlay was made out of the lace which was left over from a doll's bridal gown I made in 2017. The trim came in a suprise package from a friend who lives in the US. It was perfect for this outfit. I also added pearls to the flowers that had none and restrung those flowers that did have them.

I have to say that I am proud of this outfit as it turned out exactly how I wanted it. And everything came out of the stash or was gifted to me. I hope to make a pair of Plain Jane shoes out of the satin to go with this outfit.

I am now working on a blue and yellow outfit for the little girl I sew for. I got the cotton fabric part done. I love the capri pants and will make them again. The fit is good and they are cute.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCLM-5-Cnz8_XEoFBOCK6OnrVk6E-pwkeYxq1tLQNkBYqGYv8gYr9nf_IQ_x-O9iU85DyVgcpS3frDsr0udRKmudy6KPHxNBgW12IUmZnVK64bIC8jbi6DMoq96z5n9vh0rhUJj6bhYdMBUC5wBLCJqGohdFuAULVENnUJPM44JdHfu3k7mg/w300-h400/IMG_0764.HEIC)

I am not a fan of the top. It is cut in one piece. As there are no shoulder seams, it does not fit well at the neckline and shoulders. I won't be making it again.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2inFrry3Ur8AtaR8HJM9hoXDv-EYTZIa5nf7hAuk9S7616ysRiem9RFkDvPlhtz6QhXvbrRnPWAZgib38DOM05y_18NDpAkfhQKkxR9bsgK7-o-Di37qpOTCP3tZq9iXQ-MkdCIJLiBzXXPYSrIzt_qx6EsWgHpE1N_x3h2-IXyODIJgmBw/w300-h400/IMG_0763.HEIC)

Next up is a t-shirt and capri length leggings. The t-shirt is to have crystals on the front. I have to look to see if I have more yellow ones or if I need to alternate with clear crystals. Then I'm going to make shoes to go with the outfit.

Are you using the precut soles? I am wanting to try shoes too. I have got a few suitable bits for uppers (and a pattern) but have to make some suitable soles. Worried about import duty if I buy from USA. I found some tiny buckles I want to use.
Title: Re: Sewing For Dolls
Post by: Ann on August 16, 2022, 13:10:58 PM
@toileandtrouble, I am using precut soles and insoles that I bought from a buyer in the US. I didn't have to pay import duty as it comes under a duty free category into Canada. Shipping was expensive though.

I am making Love U Bunches Plain Jane shoes which I bought at Pixie Faire. She has this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jphaTAIZJI) out to help put on the soles and talks about how to finish soles you make yourself. I am also going to make these Bow Knotted sandals (https://www.happybankkycraftymom.com/post/bow-knotted-sandals) by Happy Bannky Craft Mom. It is a free pattern and she has a video on how to make them also.

I am hoping to make the Plain Jane shoes to match the Regency dress but the ultimate goal is to make them out of leather.  I have thin leather and know I will have to line them. I am looking forward to making them.

Hope this all helps you.

It is shoe time once I get things done in the house. I may have time to sew the uppers this morning. It is a busy day for us of which I am expecting DH to have a melt down from so much going on -- cleaners, respite, and doctor's. I may have to go to the pharmacy to get prescriptions filled also.

@Ouryve, this doll has a lovely face. I love her blue eyes and sweet face. I think she is the sweetest face doll I have. I don't dress her often and I really don't know why. She is a delightful model.

@Ann  that is the pattern I bought. I thought I could easily add straps if I wanted them.  I would have bought the precuts from the site too, but total cost would be too much.  I got some offcuts of leather and some bits are probably thin enough. I will get familiar with the pattern before I risk it.
Love the studs on the tee shirt.

@toilandtrouble, I am sure you can add straps to those shoes. I am planning on adding ribbons to mine so they will tie at the ankle.

I got the first shoe done to adding the insole. It wasn't too hard but I did take my time making it. I did a lot of pressing and they could use more. I haven't put them on the foot of the doll yet as I want to have the sole on and they be perfectly dry.

@toileandtrouble, here is the shoe without the sole on it.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjryO8kDvokRxvAZwlCKfZ8avjDK6lkGvupmrXJgme6duNxHfGugH3jD7Bjs_d4Hz6umQbcQdMQ7TnkTdRiBKmddVkH-YijhjGs3VSyKvqKue6L_vI2Epk8f2k8TMXsosKA42pww_YNCCtWclYgoT63S9KCmDNOZCjhQ44t_snuc54U78uMlA/w300-h400/IMG_0801.HEIC)

I am happy with my first shoe but did learn a few things.

The back seam needs to be worked on more as it didn't lie as flat as I had hoped. I will try jewelry pliers as the designer recommends and then press well after using them.

The toe part didn't have points on it as I smoothed it as I put it onto the insole.

Watch the lining at the heel as I have a bit of a bulge in the lining.

I put the fabric on the insole and left it to dry while I did the back seam and the stitching around the part of the shoe that goes onto the sole. It was dry enough when I put the shoe upper on.

I left the shoe to dry overnight without the sole being attached. I had run out of time. I will attach the sole today after I do the 2nd shoe. It is ready to be glued onto the sole.

Overall I am happy with my first attempt at making shoes.

That is one neat toe! Looking forward to seeing them finished.
I was going to get out the pattern today, now it has matured  (since May!) but spent the whole morning cleaning out my oven, even taking the door apart, then just as I cleared up got a phone call. Apparently I have been invited for my gall bladder operation but the letter has not arrived.  Anyhow, while the nurse was taking my pre-op details, she was told there was a cancellation, and can I go this Friday instead? So definitely no doll shoes until next week at the latest and then OH will have to move the machine for me.  I can think about it though.

I did get the shoes done and only one issue. The soles are too big for the sandals. I am going to see if our neighbor will cut the insoles and soles down with our dremel when I do another pair.

Shoes

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyHuBMz4RhxymNPO75skf8OIkdu-N50TPIc7ayz0ft45QbatFvVYgJin1-sBhT2GEND264K1H8pxEiVbqnEYG3gqeJSRziFzeuz4p91lf42r75q5Bnn1nJM4w2BccirdrJM4uE_8ugDewQXSk6snf0YL0wB70Lg7I-cVLQ7j6a3-Ii5V5BGw/w300-h400/IMG_0898.HEIC)

And the sandals. I forgot to cut the fabric bigger and glue under on the insoles. Learning curve and I was rushing.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT17myTrbGGBov3a5VvxmsWBgDpM3cxhMle-_rWZq_2Pl8Safb-a7M3hkUp4uBBlbiRQR67qtfO0VlPq2s3mGG8JxnYNyPDJzN3gJO8BEbo2oLGIfIuB4tfz1fAb80XY5ahN1VSk8bCEkx90fem-2jbH2v_zHDtvhh2oWuqIVF5JDYun5H4A/w225-h400/IMG_0900.JPG)

Though the designer said not to cut clips into the part of the shoe that attaches to the insole, I am going to do it next time to see if the fabric lies flatter for me. I do try different techniques until I find one I like. More shoes will be made down the road.

Thank you about the kind words on the shoes and outfits.

I have started my next doll dresses. As they have embroidery on them, I am doing a muslin to get it right. So far I have the embroidery on the bodices.

I am going to scoop the neckline on this dress. I'm hoping it will look okay as the embroidery is almost too wide for this pattern. The designer doesn't have the pattern for sale for this doll.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEVYgQ7f95acjyBA1vZtBlX--9T8Mk9PDZERv2GtWYAUKPGTYEzb8ZvxFcbEEs6-ltIM_MzIKXrAQa-cKPR1_EEQB_7TSjB9-MvzyePujV3Jokl3nueupup1ZZPVSqCHp8kPLzRRXId4SGtAnznZ6qfsUGcAgGYAMmVKBGAS6c3JUzZqVBDw/w300-h400/IMG_0906.HEIC)

The American girl doll's bodice is designed for this embroidery. I have redone the bodice as this one has side and shoulder sections missing as I cut the fabric too small. I didn't have time to take pictures as I had to go up and take over from respite.

I haven't done any sewing this weekend as I am on my own and exhausted from being up 22 hours on Thursday and am still trying to catch up on my sleep. I did get about 6-7 hours on Friday night and about the same last night but am still tired. Hopefully we will get a good sleep tonight.

I have my 2 granddaughters ( age 4 and 2) staying this week, so we got their mum’s old doll out of the loft and the older one just loves her.
She was dressed only in a babygro and my granddaughter was puzzled as to why she doesn’t have ‘proper’ clothes.  So while she was at nursery and the little one napped I gave dolly a makeover using clothes the girls had grown out of.  :D  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I did finish the muslin for the Soutache dress and I do like the pattern.

I am now ready to make the final dress in pink with rose embroidery. I am looking forward to seeing the final results.

Thanks for the kind words. I did have a weepy spell yesterday which is not unusual for me. It hits when I least expect it.

I started the final version of the Soutache dress. The fabric is more mottled than I thought it was. I would use a plain fabric if I was ever to make it again.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU3pR9kASoSsYKmVh8SHuPE_i88OhIYSadMMyCOK0Aub_hnXSrzuivYEY6ANy0VvSqdU-j_XaeijnpqL-ODFjzSz7ZBLfhiXiydK4kFpLZMykZ2hAwWOQfRZhdKEaS-PaRNxi_sXdzdAGxAOR3T3yKmUe8HX9p9i8UYA2wMdtTjCEQgTO9bw/w400-h300/IMG_1067.jpeg)

I need to do some adjustments to the bodice pattern before I cut out the bodice. The embroidery is done though. Hopefully I will sew on the bodice today.

Not exactly sewing, but I’ve been doing up my old doll’s house for my granddaughters. They love it when they visit. This week I’ve repapered, put up new pictures, made new bed covers and recarpeted a few bits. For fun, I added a tiny photo of them on the wall in the lounge.
My younger granddaughter popped in today and the look on her face when she recognised herself and her sister, was just wonderful. She was astonished
Just wish I could find a few extra little bits of furniture. Almost everything in the house is 1960s 1/16 scale and even on EBay it costs a fortune.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The lining is just about ready to attach and then it will be on to the skirt.

I got the pink Soutache dress and matching shoes done. The dress bodice is a bit longer and I took some off the centre back so it wouldn't close so far over. The skirt is about 1/4" too short but it does show the lace on her pantaloons. That I wanted.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwsBThNvkSXhHFi6CDSnqkL0czEaqsmNaKUFT-JIoAXNh7Ko1_VCZXXpUkJY7lZy30qwJvQVjQeKCwdiF5EjLgy1XXpdWibg8IShpOj_-dKbUuGBpVqYNfzl6C_uMsPTztPRX9H_Q6RG7o_CWpGIzfFIgVgJLmQqT8vGCwDyqGVToqN3-X2g/w300-h400/IMG_1094.jpeg)

The shoes took longer than expected. I spent a lot of time making sure the top of the shoe was the same length to the toe when I glued the upper to the insole. I also spent a lot of time putting on the white soles. Taking my time resulted in a nicer looking shoe. I'm learning the tricks of making nice looking shoes.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcJ4Btb8frDgMjTFXug6itGrFYr6hfzKw3GPnlHwLCPrsGQFheBg7Myxdg3sU7jBqbH2rjS9CwYvYCPTFCWjLa1sS9fYhhnVVZMaSqlJXzINkfPDaKAr1DePc87Wv46cw1WBvGjMQpgn-Wk4JAjtuNw2ON4ovaZnWLXOA7hWSrG4iSUsFy4Q/w400-h206/shoes.jpg)

I'm now going to start the last two months of Christmas sewing with a few small doll projects thrown in. I'm finishing up outfits so they are complete. I have made this choice as I want to be able to have complete outfits for the dolls. Undergarments are one thing I have to make more of.

My granddaughter is getting an American Girl doll for Christmas, so I've started making her wardrobe. Over the past few days, I've completed a small stack of casual clothes and a dressy cape. The cape was supposed to have a fur hat, but I didn't have enough scraps of the fur to create it. I figured up the time spent on the cape and accessories, and it was about 10hrs. At the now-low-end wage of $15/hr, that outfit would cost $150. This is why one can't buy nice doll clothes at an affordable price.

The teal shirt will get an applique when I find something suitable, and the pink and blue shirt will get a pair of pink leggings, which will make an outfit to match the one I made for my granddaughter to wear.

A doll living in MN MUST have suitable winter wear!

Close-up of the detailing. The ribbon ties are very long, but I'll let my daughter decide where to cut them. Little fingers have more trouble with tying bows and I wasn't sure how long they needed to be. Certainly not this long though.

@WendyW, WOW!!! what a lovely wardrobe you have made for your DDG's doll. I love the tartan cape and hat. Perfect for cold winter days. You did an amazing job on the rest of the clothes also. I'm sure DDG is going to be thrilled when she opens the package Christmas morning.

I've been sewing bags for DD. She needed 3 of them and I've got 2 ready to sew on buttons and hand sew the lining where I pull the bags through. Hopefully I'll get the 3rd one done tomorrow. Was busy with physio, flu shot, to the lawyers, bank, buying a spool of thread, and getting a few groceries. Tired from the flu shot so slept part of the evening away. Will go to bed early so I can sew tomorrow and get these bags done. Then I hope to shop Sunday afternoon and put the box in the mail at a post office that opens at noon.

Next item in the pile for my granddaughter. Jumper in red corduroy, blouse is a random stash scrap. (I think in the UK, a "jumper" is a pullover sweater, correct? So what do you call this style of dress that goes over a blouse?) After using full-on high-end details on last week's cape, this outfit totally felt like cheating. The bottom edges of the jumper lining only got pinking for a finish, blouse is only 3 pattern pieces, 2 of which I didn't even use, and it went together SO quickly. I'll definitely use that pattern again. Jumper from Simp. 7083, blouse from Simp. 4347.

@WendyW, another cute outfit for your DGD's doll. Such a lucky girl. I started making shoes this summer and have made 3 pairs of Plain Jane shoes and a pair of sandals. I really enjoy making them.

I finished up a compete outfit for one of my dolls. I had tested the Isla Lass outfit Sept. 2021, I finally got it finished. I knit a shawl (Outlander style and not era correct) which I added ties to, made bloomers, and shoes. I dug out a pair of socks I knit 7-8 years ago. They have a turned heel and gusset and were fiddly to make.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1G1v5Tdv41ISxupVVVjEhgaM2UF-f0CImGpAUXBHzA7-pkN4rMqW5ocW_evNbsRPz8R24GWrVcfK-57ZqQDoXjF5Baidusc6ZEX9IpnwQoHrZ6V_PwEGM8E4BjSHjoI-rW54-1KQuY3_Ycm7jHq90n9Y_9DiNBAePf6yQyweHkekZsk40bg/w300-h400/IMG_1245.jpeg)

The shawl shown ties at the back which was common in the 1800's. I crocheted the strings for this one to get the look.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicw4nz23Gn1av39dPoJg1taON-Y0y2foIUhKYbU5AObGWLtNMtF734V8zBF4Dk89Xt2LvCyru-P_U1lw2KasuPyEix1xs88VD9o3BPfHw3xgvJ2473YJjZ8ESA9K7wCci_VJFRsXgQGxSZSXG7Hwi8wvIWZsRos6WkLEwNzjN0LyWTn-tt4A/w300-h400/IMG_1231.jpeg)

The outfit without the apron. The apron covers too much of the lovely skirt but I will put it on her as I've done all the pictures.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyGKYFSHmlZJWaEjeUUt5RDyla_f3pX9yDPXFl-8dghiqHHUrqdoKtG2zzJafzhbB00RFUuISoeQ_wMtSQ9l5Txuwv0rpGYybhS4o6L3q-0vuL9bXyCwLeA__jMxOswArKn2zt6Z18fJ2B7EEbW7pAfxU8jnTJ83q4qcQyiMEuLpu23LlipA/w300-h400/IMG_1244.jpeg)

Next project for the dolls is to finish the Regency Era dress by adding bloomers, stole, and parasol. So far I have the dress, over dress and shoes done. It is November's project which will probably flow into December.

That's a beautiful outfit @Ann! I love the shawl. Unlike the socks, that looks like a knitting project I could handle. I've tried people socks, and don't like working with such thin yarn.

Before my catastrophic night in the sewing room, I finished a nightgown for my granddaughter's doll. It matches the nightie I gave Sami last Christmas, so she and her doll can be look-alikes.

@WendyW, the night gown looks lovely for your DGD's doll.

The socks were fiddly to knit and I did knit 2 pairs of them. I'll knit more when needed. The shawl is a nice pattern as you can use different weights of yarn. I chose sock yarn and small needles but one doesn't have to with this pattern. It can be done with heavier weights of yarn.

I got to sew for the dolls today. I made a pair of gloves out of a pair of socks. They are fiddly but doable. I found a video that was painful to watch. The designer of the gloves was using the wrong needle and had tons of skipped stitches which she went back to fix. When I filtered that out, I got the idea of what to do. It worked and I used a 8/60 microtex needle and a regular stitch. I'll make the 2nd pair using a stretch stitch.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik2Ix0JMVt_EZ6bgH5NuXIrEyqccSRO06t63XthitMqHbL4VHXfzBvDknR0F_juOcX7TPdyZ0luTFHfw0Lo8eBRt8Ov0mtXRuWrPi2gz18Y8mJYqb33k695_VZSdCEqnywB1Z5FbzHD_Gjs-4HB8ZIiaXy0Cf6o-vov1ZRpjo-NZXW6i4ORA/w300-h400/IMG_1422.jpeg)

They look a bit stark with the dress but the appliqués are white. I'm crocheting a parasol in white so that will balance the white part more. I still have a stole to make but not sure what fabric I will use. I'm hoping the satin with white stitching on it.

I will be making one more pair to put away for another outfit I want to make next year.

Thanks for the comments. The dolls don't go on display. There is no where to do that in our small community. Even the library hasn't got any place to put them where fingers couldn't touch them.

I did make another pair of gloves and Addy is modelling them in another Regency dress I made pre Covid.

I'll be buying another 2 pairs of socks to make more gloves to go with other outfits I have planned. I even want to try wrist length ones. I do have a pattern for them in the pattern stash.

I made another dress for one of the Gotz dolls I adopted. She got a lilac and white batik cotton dress which I added lace trim to the skirt.

I finally got another doll's outfit sewn. This one took forever to make due to yard work. I also didn't feel well for a few days as I think I need a medication change. I will find out on Saturday.

The doll's outfit is suppose to be close to what a young lady would wear in the 1930's. I did quite a bit of research to make sure I was close. The fabrics are not 1930's but fun fabric I loved. The jacket is suppose to be a more modern design but it has both a Victorian/Edwardian and 1930's vibe to me.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeEbnETUK_e3kJtll8wZJpz3zifgbxfvfPdLYX_XOKJEbURvfIWW5TCY9v09KxQTKjpy0zuS8ij2PVnToOC9nGa-pgZEGBpby7PrwosXonP_wyOxu7_rWW0SOr_Nu6TDBGUwfHwXmOCm4u7lyXZd-P_ZOBucPRJXuPRAs0wCowJV2LxZT84KSa/w300-h400/IMG_2679.jpeg)

The shoes are from the pattern I always make. They fit the dolls well and fit any era.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFA2Gge9Zzzz9mlWCt2EsWjXG-yupu0K8wBsqbgLbpC_3U09GGLvRolEuk_oYP7OFekENRLVxIJZRsVEoItrUw99XykCdSn-LkmieesCgRLZReDlfuFFThTTInktsm5e9_sKsvvlTXL4qU2mnIEKdhcTY-bletP8ZLi9Wakrrn6VL1FY3INnGP/w300-h400/IMG_2672.jpeg)

The wristlet is 1930's and is small. But so cute.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU7SZ3qOunG1-8Nq5fX_mqblXXmBjIBvjk5hHINW6LQ3EIdq8XPq9kqLJa9exG-6340lACLZvwicr7ISidQ5lnl_2OD6MpZ71i8-lrWoJJthhhaQ0SdW1UW3GAV7qNqHvrZ6qFdgd-OJ38GCoZ6i2Mj7HYkn7OA-KiOtTVppOjJaHEjWqaSGaV/w300-h400/IMG_2675.jpeg)

I add bee buttons for fun. In all I am happy with each pattern I used to make this outfit and will be using them again in different outfits. My next outfit is going to be a summery modern top and skirt. I now need to dig into the stash to find fabrics I want to use for them.

@WendyW, I use the Plain Jane (https://www.pixiefaire.com/products/plain-jane-18-doll-shoes) shoe pattern from Pixie Faire. I watched her video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jphaTAIZJI&t=195s) on YouTube for ideas but follow the instructions in the pattern as I like them better. I have found that taking my time to make them is the key element to having nice looking shoes.

Title: Re: Sewing For Dolls

This dress was intended to be part of the collection I gave my granddaughter for Christmas, but I got totally frustrated by the project and decided it would be worthy of being a birthday present on its own- 6 months later, when I didn't have a zillion other Holiday details to take care of. The pattern I started with is "To the Ball" from Dollhouse Designs.

I love the finished dress, though it is far from the original intent. The entire bodice was supposed to be the sequined fabric and there are supposed to be petticoats, and there is not supposed to be a corset panel in the back. My granddaughter LOVES it, which is, of course, the most important part.

I had SO MANY issues making this dress. Some issues were my own fault, but there were major issues with the pattern instructions that drove me batty! The sequined fabric is a knit and I should have interfaced it before cutting; I finally figured that out before making the final version. The shoulder drape is not drapey enough, and makes her look like she's got boobs, which is NOT the effect I was going for a little girl's doll. (I had limited options in fabric choices for that.) I should have made a muslin first, which would have save me a lot of time and stress, but why would I think of that for doll dress??

That pattern though?! OHH! I was so mad at that pattern!

1. Conflicting instructions. In the bodice section (step 7) it had me sew both the top and bottom of the bodice to the lining, then turn it right side out through an open side. Later, it told me to attach the skirt to the bottom edge of the bodice (step 16) then hand-stitch the bottom of the lining (step 27).

2. The instructions are comparable to a run-on sentence. There is no division or headings to separate the various stages. On a purchased pattern I can check off the finished part, or refold the instruction sheet to keep my place, but in this download it got very frustrating. I was not about to print out *20+ pages* with color photos and was reading the instructions from the computer. Whenever it was necessary to scroll, finding my place again was difficult.

3. The photos. The instructions include many color photos. The quality is good. They are clear and easy to see. However, many of them were so close up that you couldn't tell WHAT the picture was of. If I'd had section headings it would not have been as big of a deal, but I tried using the photos to find my spot as I scrolled, and many were worthless for that. Also, the sample dress used for the photos had all the fabrics in the same color. It was difficult to tell main fabric from lining fabric from netting fabric, etc. This pattern would have benefited greatly if the sample had used different colors for the different layers.

4. Sizing.  All three attempts at the bodice came out way too small. The first bodice attempt was so bad I never even tried it on a doll. After second attempt, I added to the seam allowances because curves on a 1/4" seam are hard, and it still came out way too small. I ended up adding a corset panel in back to make it fit.

@WendyW, isn't it frustrating when you buy a pattern and it has horrid instructions. I have not tested for this lady when I did testing through Pixie Faire. She must have her own private group of testers. I looked up the pattern on Pixie Faire and she got some poor reviews on the instructions and fit. She did get some good reviews also. I have a couple of her patterns which will be red flagged when I go to make them.

You did an amazing job using difficult fabrics and a poorly executed pattern.

I made a doll's outfit out of left over fabric from another project. I used Simplicity 9516 for the dress and apron, Plain Jane shoes from Love U Bunches, and Happy Banky Crafty Mom's poke bonnet. I enjoyed making this outfit and love the results.

I know it isn't historically correct but I got over that as the outfit came together. Not everything has to be historically correct but it needs to have the fabrics work together to be cohesive. That's my opinion.

Thank you for the kind comments on the outfit. I did a bit of fussy cutting on the apron bodice insert. I wanted a chickadee in it. With limited fabric I accomplished that.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvlY7ZXz6kZa8J6Fu0PfAp3zQ5F1XcOxHxolIA-GdaQ5YpihrUDM0k0Fo9KrFzHQq0-iP2WFzgYp1wDqvXHsa8ryGsg6Txmf3Hm50evFpbnMGZT6uL2yogwXbPXG-wKKbw1gUcREfZK6aL6C8DfHqqn0VrzISO7x_gkalL2BUUiMFaRKz6ount/w300-h400/IMG_2770.jpeg)

I spent yesterday planning the next doll's outfit. The fabrics are laundered and the shoes are cut out. I can't start it for a bit as I have other sewing projects to complete and prep for when I sew at the quilt shop. I can press the fabrics and print the patterns and dream about sewing it.

Another outfit has been completed. I started with a picture of what I would like to make.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPBBiYP8SF3ovpvZAKF4q_T91951UvTs-WNdLfnz6jKj6yx8mNeiC9HRKnhOM1TEJT080GXtZX2Ak2n35QwuI5c6bazpv3Ze2TRtr1H2Iokn_wd1rv4yYMZ6C3dJPCSWw3AVf73pcZp4_L9Gc0ykukdpTyELuS9ZsKrV_WVv_U83s1-XJLq43rDDS_4Qo/w300-h398/Skirt%20Idea.jpg)

I decided on my fabrics choosing a print for the skirt, a textured blue for the top, a combination of both for the hat, and silver leather for the shoes. I used socks for the gloves. I sewed on this outfit every day starting Aug 12 and finished it on Aug. 22. It was a lot of fun and it developed as I had envisioned it would.

For September I am going to make a second top out of the print fabric and a jean jacket out of the blue. I am hoping that the fabric will be gone at that point. If not, I will have to find something else to add to the mix.

I made another doll's outfit and this time I used up remnants from the previous outfit I made. The skirt and top were an easy make with the hardest part being the sweetheart neckline.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmRsfR7j_BA597ukOxZtY7VPIG4Zqz2EkR-PPPw1AQr-0Y4RthoQl9uFlCN5VPEHYj_5xRUN7OdnGCcDe2G7hQebfC_Ld_fyX-mJAa2OqLl8czG7mPuIgGuN_HZ5sFc9gGJqmZNRMoer03181MPPcqlKv08xTnnqNifx65PWs8Xm9TR_raZAYf/w300-h400/IMG_3287.jpeg)

I then made a jean jacket to go with the outfit. There was a lot of pieces and more top stitching as I made fake fell seams. I got it done with a lot of precision sewing and a few choice words.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkL856psab_D1fbI-I4qxIZTyY01wSIkijc2dKzKy4U5jlQ5f2PFaHjrgnEbFN3S6cuOnL-x1wGsX778y_IccZtQuZBwtL0-3_qWY5_W3n0eTuUcdNktD_je9rjZpLYS2aJByhClmgPV2zVAxhNRAfleuCvqR5Acm5PLiA7NgsMYF3lzA6wAem/w300-h400/IMG_3331.jpeg)

I am now ready to sew on something bigger and simpler. And without snaps or buttons.

I will knit a sweater to go with it so she can stay warm while wearing it. Not sure what I will sew next for the dolls. I will have left over fabric from a shirt I am making for myself so may make something from it.

@Ann  Our littlest goddaughter has been given an 18" 'Our Generation' doll for Christmas - this one:

She is most interested in her for her hair, but I would quite like to make her some clothes.  Do you know whether patterns for standard 18" dolls, such as the ones you have, will fit her?  If so, do you have some sources for buying patterns?

I am just so delighted that she has a 'proper' doll as well as all those emaciated Barbies!!   0_0

I find the OG dolls are a little different to the American Girl ones and some of their patterns are quite tight on them.  Pixiefaire.com have patterns for AG dolls  and some free patterns.  I would make the width slightly more. The height is right.  McCalls do several 18" doll pattern sets.  They are less complicated than the pixiefaire ones which aim to be more like real clothing.

@Acorn, if the doll is a bit bigger than an American Girl dolls, you will have to make them a bit bigger. Oh Sew Kat has nice patterns for beginners. Sign up and you get a free skirt pattern. She also has hacks for her patterns. The patterns are well drafted, instructions well written

I just read on Rosie’s Clothes Patterns that AG doll clothes patterns fit Our Generation dolls. Check out her website as she has some great patterns also.

One thing I have found out is American Girl dolls are different sizes. Some are smaller, others normal and some chunky. To combat that I omit darks on the chunky dolls and make them deeper for other dolls. Keepers Dolly Duds patterns may have a cutting line added for chunky dolls.

Have fun sewing for the doll. It is addictive.

Most McCalls doll patterns are great too. You get more pieces than you do buying independent designer patterns. I started with McCalls when I first made doll clothes. Just remember to hem most pieces flat and not in the round.

It was @Ann 's fault I fell into 18" doll sewing!   The clothes she made for hers were so beautiful I went and bought a second hand doll just to sew for.  (Then I saw another offered and... But we won' t go into that)
Some of those 'realistic ' clothes are quite tight.  I have a bit of a tussle with some of them.  A small child would really struggle.
A neighbours girl got an 18" doll and I started making items for her when I made mine.  The thing she really loved was dungarees. Bright pink.

@toilandtrouble, I am so pleased that I helped you fall into 18" doll sewing.

I fell into some depression this fall and when I got out of it, I was behind sewing for Christmas so the doll got neglected. I am now cleaning the sewing room this week and once done I will be back to sewing which will include dolly sewing. Not only for my 13 dolls but for two little girls who love to play with the 5 they have.

@Acorn, I hope you will show what you make for your godchild's doll.

Here is a page (https://www.pixiefaire.com/pages/search-results-page?q=quilts) of doll quilts so the dolls can say warm.

Well, littlest goddaughter seems to still be be devoted to Barbies, and her Our Generation doll (Daisy) appears to be her 'playing with hair' doll.

However, I have found a nice OG doll on Ebay at a good price... and if my goddaughter doesn't come around to playing with hers as she gets older I think I could have plenty of fun myself...   :ninja: ... and what better way to persuade her than giving her some lovely clothes anyway??!

This is Emily.  She is an Our Generation doll, the same model as my goddaughter's doll so that I can make clothes to give to her (in the future, I don't think she's ready for well made dolls' clothes just yet!)  Emily is wearing her original dress and a Little Schoolhouse Cardigan designed by Joan Duquette (and knitted by me).

I do have one problem.  Because I needed to get the same model as my goddaughter's doll, Emily has very long hair with a section that grows - there is a knob hidden about her person that turns to let it grow, which needs very slight accommodation in her clothes.  Unfortunately, while Emily herself is in great condition, her hair has been well and truly played with and is a real mess.

I am going to cut her hair, but wondered if anyone has any advice about how to do this?  I'm happy enough to trim my own hair, but mine grows back!

My little friend couldn't be bothered with the long hair on her doll.  Her mother cut it to shoulder length, like her daughter. It looks great, I am just getting up courage to do that to one of mine.  She doesn't have any tips. I asked.

@Acorn a Google search comes up with the idea of using fabric conditioner on a dolls hair to detangle it, I have no idea if it works but might be worth a go if you’re going to cut it anyway.

Ooh that sounds sensible - thanks @Cazlyn - that might make it a bit bendier, so that the ends curl rather than looking spiky.

I'm still trying to pluck up the courage...

@Acorn The only advice I can give is don't try to dry the hair by putting the doll in front of a gas fire. I did this with my Tiny Tears doll many moons ago and she had to have a head transplant.

@Acorn I tried conditioner.  Use very very little, you can't handle it too much to wash out.  It didn't seem to do much for mine, but that one was very bad.  Perhaps it was the operator!
