Title: Sew Red for The Eve Appeal

The Eve Appeal, the gynaecological cancer research charity, are running a campaign called GO RED in September encouraging awareness and fundraising for this vital research into the 5 gynaecological cancers – womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal.

In order to join in, and in memory of our beloved Vegegrow we have decided to put on a special sewalong, SEW RED for September!

This is going to be a pretty simple sewalong... sew something red and share it with us and all your friends. We encourage all entrants to donate whatever sum they can, plus share their makes with their friends and family to encourage more donations.

The donation link is here: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/TheSewingPlace

Read more about GO RED here: https://eveappeal.org.uk/supporting-us/take-part-in-an-event/go-red/

Rules

1. You shall make a minimum of one sewn item in a red fabric or majority red design.
2. If you want to make more than one entry, feel free to do so, but submit them in separate posts
3. Any type of sewn object is fine. Garments, quilts, bags, toys, embroidery on existing objects, deco items...
4. Sewing starts on 1st September, you can prepare and cut beforehand but please don't stitch
5. Please post pictures by 30th September midnight

Edit: The rules above are a little more loose than normal sewalongs as this is a charity sew. So if you don't quite hit the mark on one of the rules just let us know.

I'm in.

I have red fabric from FoQ and I found a pattern I liked.  It costs $30.50 (about £27) - not ideal but...  Then I checked the shipping and found that was even more.  :o  Maybe not.

I’ve got some beautiful quality red & white gingham, I bought from Croft Mill years ago.  Not sure why I bought it, as red’s not a colour I can wear really (looks ridiculous with my fat, tomato red face!).  Would like to make a flouncy skirt, but might be a bit too much ‘cowgirl’?

I have some thin poly jersey in red and navy swirly paisley; I can make a day to night top for for going out to dinner in.

I’ve just bought a batch of red fat quarters, so might make something small: maybe a quilted tea cosy or some oven gloves. :drink:

I started a shirt dress in some red liberty silk ages ago, it's definitely not sewn, I'm not even sure if I got further than pinning the pattern pieces on to the fabric! Would I be allowed to enter that?

@Samantha it's for charity so we're a little more lax  ;) A few stitches here and there is fine. Better if it's only pinned though. The rules are more guidelines on this particular sewalong.

would red/black or red/blue tartan be ok. Red is the dominant colour in both pieces I have.

Having looked at this fabric again, and after going to the trouble of downloading and printing a free pdf skirt pattern (DIBY Club Duchess Skirt), I've decided I might just sew some aprons from it instead.  The likelihood of me actually wearing a skirt made from red & white gingham is sufficiently remote to make me reconsider.
If the aprons turn out well enough, and there's no reason why they shouldn't,  I will sell them locally to raise more funds for the Eve appeal.

I have some ?viscose? which I was given at sewing club. I tried to leave it there but was persuaded it's 'my colour'. It's an orangey red and I'd usually go for a purply red andit has a 'tablecloth' design woven in...not something I'd usually choose for myself. It has a beautiful drape and doesn't crease. Anyway, I've traced off a Prima shirtdress pattern today and will make it & donate for Vege. I may also donate the finished dress....we'll see.

Any red as long as it can comfortably be described as red! And red wine red... well that sounds pretty red.

So I have at last managed to get all my red fabrics together, just have to decide what to make. A few of the pieces are left over from other projects so may combine, thinking some of the red velvet and the tartans to make a Vivian Westwood style skirt.
Amended. oops just seen the closing date, going away on Tuesday for 3 weeks so may not have time to get anything done, dam.

And Verily I have had a revelation ........

Handed down from Heavens in Gods hand .....

Tracing paper!!!
Kids Tracing paper from the Bargains shop at £1.25p a pack!

Let me explain...

For the Sew RED Quilt, Im having to print off a load of patterns, fix them to the folded squares of fabric and then cut loads of pieces to make up the block .. So far so good, accurately (mostly) cut pieces and a fairly happy bunny.

Next you have to paper piece the middle of the block, the square in square ... it starts the whole thing off very accurately and then you just build onto this super straight square with your trapezoids (get ,me , like I know what a trapezoid is ... Well I do now obvs)

The problem is laying your beautifully cut 2 1/2" square of fabric behind the printed foundation paper accurately to cover the printed square with a reasonable seam allowance all around. You have to hold the thing up to a light/window or lay it ontop of a light box, fiddle around to get it straightish, then place the next piece in its position, then turn the whole thing over, keeping these two bits of fabric where they are, take it to the sewing machine and hope nothings moved too far out of position before you start to sew over the printed line.

Now my first one was almost spot on,  but one was so bad I had to re-cut my pieces (no unpicking on a 1.5 stitch length!) so I can see this becoming a real problem.

AGS talked of using Vellum, so I hopped onto Google and ... Sharp intake of breath, almost £10  for 30 sheets!!!
but then a niggle began in my brain ... hadnt I bought a shed load of kiddies Tracing paper a couple of years back when I was tracing a load of patterns for something or  other????

Yes I had ... and ... I knew where they were. Upstairs I ran and down it came ...

First problem, would it print?
The First one was smeary and the printer didnt much like it going through ... BUT ... if you guide the TP as it goes into the printer completely straight, it prints out just beautifully!

Next problem, Would it smear?....
If I rubbed it very hard against white, yes theres a lil mark BUT the fabric is laid against the TP on the reverse side to the printing!

Visibility next ... judge for yourselves ...

Tearability .... just as good as the regular foundation stuff!!!

Oh Boys and Girls, this is a revelation on a Biblical Scale ... Im so happy !!!

BTW @rubywishes  ... Im sure you have kiddies tracing paper over there!!!

@Iminei sadly, alas, my printer will not take the childrens' tracing paper  :'(. it is a big monster of a thing and I can't get behind it to feed in individual sheets so I have had to stick with standard paper in the pick up tray. Maybe next time I need to print out more I might see if Mr.Ruby can re-position it for me but for now I'm not stressing. I'm using a 1.5 stitch and the paper pulls away from my trial blocks very easily. I also read a tip where you can wet a cotton bud and run that along your stitch line to moisten the paper prior to removing it so that it is easier.

@rubywishes ... its the seethroughocity of the TP that is the key for me not the detachability after the event !

Tho' I have yet to actually detach some, I might try it in a minute as I tried to work something out yesterday ... which didnt work ... but I got a lovely (wrong sized) block out of it so can practice on that.

I was sick all weekend and by the time I looked at the fabric I intended to use, the dark red colour reminded me of old school uniforms! I'll be ordering some brighter fabric tonight and will put something together this weekend. I'll be on holiday the weekend after, which I completely forgot about..... But at least I know what I want to make! :)

@Iminei .....just a thought...why don't you trace your markings/seam allowance for each block onto the back of your paper so you know exactly where you have to place your fabric without peeking backwards and forwards to the front side or trying to hold it all up to the light? That's what the instructor had me doing.  Or have I misunderstood what you meant?

Possibly because of smearing (of pencil/marker pen) but more probably because life is too short.

The TP came out easily, maybe not quite as easily as the FP would but easy enough and when it came it didnt leave lil teeny tiny bits caught in the stitching so thats a bonus.

Any how I have 15 blocks with a TP inner square and hopefully they will grow some more today.

I finished the 15 blocks yesterday but stopped before  pressing and squaring them up? down? to 10 1/2" as I was tired after a full day of sewing (and listening to my SK book)

Today I will do that, then lay them out and figure out how to make the 6 half blocks I need ....

I'm looking out for cups and saucers today whilst in St Ives. 3 people want me to make them the pincushions ( pic further up the page ) but for these I'll be making the actual cushion from patchwork. They're popular because if you miss the cushion the pins fall into the saucer ( which is superglued to cup )

Ive nearly made 6 more full blocks for the half blocks ( :S )

I simply couldnt workout a way to make them in 3 blocks and AGS's destructions for the half blocks make no sense at all and dont solve the problem, as I perceive it ... at least I dont think they do, and hope they dont otherwise I have gone very wrong..

I might run  it by you @BrendaP later or tomorrow am to get your take on it if you dont mind.

Any time you like. I have set it up through Virgin Money so I can deposit the funds straight into the Eve Appeal.

My personal plan is to post about the campaign once I've finished my garment and provide a link then, but I'll probably sort my own donation before then.

@Iminei  I've just gone back three pages to find the original linky only to find you've added itto this post>  Whatever it is you do, or don't do, your posts are notoriously difficult to see sometimes!

Anyway what you are asking is, is there a way to make half blocks without making a whole one and cutting it into unequal halves and discarding the smaller piece.

You would have to go back to the original pattern which has 'place on fold' printed on it.
Make two copies of that.
Tape them together so that they touch each other on one "fold" line.
Tape another piece of paper underneath so that you can add a seam allowance to the other "fold" lines.

That should extend all the pieces that need the extra  so that  any border/binding can be sewn on.

Seeing as I can't progress on flower girl dress due to lack of thread, I've started pattern prep for my SewRed top which will be part of my SWAKOP too :)

It's loose fit so I won't make a toile. I don't expect this will be an easy sew. It's all on the bias and the fabric is a difficult slinky poly crepe.
Title: Re: Sew Red for The Eve Appeal

I've started! I'd prepped this pattern before the competition was announced. It's a Prima one, should be easy, although this shirtdress doesn't have bust darts so it might pull a bit - since getting my BOB sized bras my boobs stick out further and they've been gathered up from my underarms. The red crepey type fabric with a jacquard design was given to me by a lovely lady at sewing club who insisted it's my colour. It's not a fabric I'd have chosen but it has a lovely drape and hopefully I'll like it once it's done. I traced the pattern and have marked my seam allowances at 8mm on shoulders, sleeves and collar, 15mm at sides in case it needs letting out a bit. I've always thought it's daft to sew at 15mm then trim. I will need a note of what's what & will need to set up the machine more accurately than usual though.

@BrendaP and anyone else that could be remotely interested.

The pattern you see on top of the folded (in quarters) 15" + square of fabric is just used to cut the 64 pieces for each block, you literally slice through the paper and fabric ... it bears no relation to the final layout of the block.

AGS's take on the elongated block completely baffles me ... She suggests cutting the top and bottom large trapezoid 1/2" wider than the normal 1 1/2" width (of all the trapezoids).

This makes no sense to me whatsoever (But who the hell am I to question a renowned quilter and author of P&Q books???)

This is MY thinking .... Im doing a 5 x 5 layout.

1st row RED centre square,
2nd row WHITE centre square,
3rd row RED centre square,
4th row WHITE centre square
5th row RED centre square

I want to emphasise the white in this so ...

1st row half block top and bottom
2nd row 5 full blocks
3rd row half block top and bottom

AGS posted this pic on Craftsy for me and another girl who have flipped the layout to make it easier for us to work out the number of blocks (her pic had 49 blocks so I have cropped this to my size)

And you can see that the half blocks are chopped through the MIDDLE of the complete block not the top or bottom...

So WHY do you need to elongate the top and bottom trapezoid??? You are just going to sew those as per normal with a 1/4" seam to the last full block??? Arent you???

My thinking is you have to sacrifice a near half block in order to get a proper half block. I imagine someone clever could build half a block, but that someone is not me and they are quite easy and almost relaxing to make and Im sure I could do something with the excess bits sooooo ....

@Iminei   Does this explain it?
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

At the top left you see a full block - green dashed lines to show the block with its seam allowances.  Also solid yellow lines for each quarter of the pattern.

At bottom left you see a half block.  Blue dashed lines to show seam allowances all around.  Also yellow solid lines to show where the quarter pattern pieces fit.

It's the bit of solid grey which you have to add to give the seam allowance.

Add on to the quarter pattern the additional quarter inch in the places where it's needed.  That will make the trapezoids longer.

Imagine if you were just cutting an ordinary square in two. If you wanted to sew it back together again you wouldn't have any seam allowance (in the middle) so the result would not be a square.

In order to end up with a square you'd have to add in 1/2" for seam allowance. It's exactly the same thing except that you're cutting through all your little shapes. You need to make those shapes half an inch longer for seam allowances when you sew them into your pattern.  :)

Let's try another way of looking at it.

Print or trace four copies of your pattern onto paper.
Stick them together so that the 'place on fold' edges are touching each other.
Trim off any excess paper outside of that block.
You now have a full block including the seam allowances around the outsides.

Draw a line through the middle of the block.
You now have two half blocks.
As Wrenkins says, if you were to cut through that line there will be no seam allowance, so draw another line a quarter of an inch (or whatever you want for the seam allowance) below that line.
Cut the paper on that second line.
You now have a pattern to use for the half blocks; place it on a single layer of fabric and cut it out.

Oh thank you girls for all your help,
you are so kind, but I found it easier to make six new blocks so can just cut them as I wish.

I did make a block a couple of days ago with the centre square 2 1/2" x 3" but it just resulted in an 11" Block somehow so no good!

So Ive got a nice stack of blocks all squared up (or down) to 10 1/2"ish just waiting for me to put them together.
When I saw this pattern 5 years ago I decided it was a step too far for me and now here I am, and its been really easy (so far) sort of relaxing too as you dont need to think .. well up to now you dont ... about it.

I have finished the red wearable quilt, but can't include it in this as I sewed it last month, but I've made a last minute decision that I want some red jeans for my hols (only 6 days away) and I have a length of red ponte lurking in the stash, so here goes!

The pattern is Deer & Doe 'Saffran' which I have made before in a rather less stretchy denim.  That fits snugly so I'm happy that this will fit without any tweeking. I just need to find a bit of something for the pocket lining.

Jeans finished and a donation made to the Sew Red appeal in memory of Vege.

The jeans are OK, but the finish with ponte is nowhere near as good as it was when I made the same pattern using proper denim - the slightest bit of wonkiness in the seams shows and the belt loops did NOT want to co-operate.  However the ponte has a lot more stretch than stretch denim and so they are comfortable to wear, and anyway I usually wear longer tops over trousers, so next time I think about ponte for trousers it will be plain pull on elasticated waist jobbies.

As for me I finished the main body of the quilt yesterday and am now pondering borders.

I want the white to shine so Im thinking a red border than a white, then red ... Tho I dont want to it be too big as I still need to quilt it.

I have some of this fabric available (Rudy Black, the red, white and black)... which Im thinking of for the backing maybe I could insert a thin strip of it as a border on the front? Or one of the other two ?

If the middle of those three is the same as used for the little red squares in the main quilt I think you definitely should be using it in the borders.

The main part of the quilt has two red sides and two white sides.  How about making the borders red-white-red along the white sides and white-red-white along the red sides.  Either mitre the corners or use square corner stones.  The black could be used for them.

Yes @BrendaP The red in the middle of the Pineapples is the red in the middle of these 3 fabrics ...

its the remains of the extra wide backing fabic that I used on the B&W jobby ... Im veering toward the Red/Black for the binding tho to give it a strong frame but Ive only got 10" ...(really dont want to buy any more fabric) and I think Im going to need more than 4 WOF for the binding. At the moment it should be 50" sq.

Five minutes ago I could see the pieced top, now I can't!  What do you do to make your photos magically disappear?

If I was trying to eke out 10" of fabric for a border I'd cut 2" strips instead of 2.5" strips, but then I usually hand stitch the back of the binding, you do need the extra half inch if you want to machine it down.

I'd go for the red and black for the binding, I think.  I've a feeling the red/white/black might just be a bit too weak, so that it would look as though the bits of black had just wandered in.

Can you get any more of it?  (Trying not to think about a certain green spotty fabric...)

So Red/white/black for the backing
Dark red/black for binding
Red used in centre of blocks and white for borders.

Well that was an eye opener!

After the last few posts I thought no time like the present so beetled off to the EDE;

After 10 minutes of wandering around in circles scouring the depleted shelves I began to get an ominous feeling, Surely they hadn't sacrificed the bolt to FQland ??? My heart sank into my stomach, gave a final lurch and stopped beating ...

Skip forward 5 slow motion minutes and on my 5th go round I spotted the bolt, hiding amongst some purples (FFS??!!) and my heart started beating again ... 2 minutes later I was out the door and on my way home with a metre of the required design ... oh and a metre of some contrasting blue and green for a project I have in mind!  ;)

Hurrrah, I have my red shirt cut out, and the interfacing fused & ready to go.

I could have had it done sooner (ha ha, i am so funny) but I made a grey version first for a funeral on Friday. We're having that spring/autumn weather that can be anything, and it looks like warmer rather than cooler.

I'm joining in too!
Got red crinkly chiffon stuff to make in to a top.  I've made it before in lawn and this is my first try sewing really lightweight stuff.
Changed it to a single piece for the back as I can easily get it over my head, remembered to change the facing too and they match.

May I have your input please ...

Please hop over to my picasa (https://photos.app.goo.gl/c5xRGCZ5XyGFQGSz7) and give me your opinion about the border and binding choices ... pics at the end of the album.

None of them might be completely right but Im trying to keep the width of the border down as the top measures 52" sq at the moment ..

The red strip will measure 1" (F) and white strip will measure 2" (F) so thats an extra 6" on the top  :S

To be honest, I'm not that keen on any of them. I think it only needs 2 strips and not 3. Having 3 detracts from the body of the quilt to me.

Top is simple with a self tie attached in the side seams. Pattern has a pleat at the neck but I thought gathers would be better for this. Pattern is Rosalind top from August's Sew magazine.

Pre-washed pinny fabrics have now been pressed.
Next step, cutting out.
I can’t be rushed, me.

Finished. Can't see me getting a long life from it, the raw edges shredded every time I touched it.
Re-washed it to put the crinkles back in and a whole lot of dye came out, so it may end up being a pink shirt.

I think the fabric is a linen mix (it has that scratchy feel some linen has) and I've had it for a goodly number of years. There may be enough left for a dress too, but I'm still thinking on that.

The pattern is the Style Arc Melody tunic top, in size 14. My measurements are closer to a 16 but I think that would have been too big.

We've got an amazing number of donations so far guys. Once we've concluded, I'll make a gallery/collage and we can hopefully post that around some of our friends too with the link to get a few more entries?

I'm looking out for cups and saucers today whilst in St Ives. 3 people want me to make them the pincushions ( pic further up the page ) but for these I'll be making the actual cushion from patchwork. They're popular because if you miss the cushion the pins fall into the saucer ( which is superglued to cup )

Are they paying you to make these Low?? Will a portion of that go to The Eve Appeal?

I've been working on my apron today.  All was going swimmingly, and then I gave my neckline seam a good long press ... and burned 5 little holes in the fabric.    :'(
It's fixable, but I will have to piece the neckline now, and I could have done without it, but that will teach me to in future a) check the iron temperature before applying to the fabric, and b) use my pressing cloth.

It’s finished.  Had to get it done today, no more free time til after the end of the month.
It’s reversible, so it’s just the one apron; flowery side and gingham side.
Not sure why only one photo is the right way up

The pic is upside down, the half blocks should be on the right of the back as  you look at it.

I might have to add another thin white border as I used 6 half blocks which equates to 60" length and the quilt measures 58" square D'OH! Wheres the Brenda the Mathmajician of Quilting when you need her ... or just add a strip top and bottom, yes I like that idea better!

I'm sure it looks fabulous!

I'm still getting nowhere with my project, just not enough hours in the day  :S I've got a deadline of until tomorrow evening to finish my corset and then I really need to get on with my dress for this wedding. Only then can I "Sew Red" and it's unlikely to be before the deadline for judging, but I'll still donate anyway  :P

Voting will go up 24th/25th or so and run for about 10 days.

It says in the first post that pictures need to be up by 23rd.

However, if most are happy to extend it until the end of September then I am OK with that too.

Just read deadline has been extended, after I have rushed to get this finished today ;). Well when I say rushed it takes about an hour to make, all done on the overlocker. Fabric was from Fabworks about 2 years ago, I got it in blue and green as well and made the same dress straight away but somehow never got round to the red.
Now have I got time to do something with the red velvet? perhaps a  :frock:

I'd go for the light red too, mainly because, although I like the dark binding, it introduces an extra colour which isn't present in the main quilt. :S

At last I managed to grab a bit of time. The red dress is part way there. The collar is ready to go on but doesn't seem to match the neckline in length  I reduced the seam allowances to 8mm and have sewn at this width very carefully so not sure what's going on. It doesn't help that I've gone down with a streaming cold (again). Today is a babysitting day so might try again tonight. The fabric frays like mad so reducing the seam allowances wasn't such a clever plan   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The SEW Red for Vege  (https://photos.app.goo.gl/c5xRGCZ5XyGFQGSz7) quilt is currently sprawling over the sofa in the lounge whilst the binding gets used to its new position in life.

Well I put in the sleeves on the red dress and took it to sewing club for opinions. Everyone agreed the colour is wrong for me, drains my face. I think it looks like a lab coat. I won't be finishing the hem or sleeve hems, and I don't need to find buttons. Two people suggested @Fabric Lover would suit it so I'll see whether she wants it. I did make a nice job of the collar in spite of the fraying. I will donate though.

Just a little red something from me.  It is a Manx log cabin block and is 12 1/2" square(ish).

I am pleased because it has been on my 'To Do' list for a while and I made it using a jelly roll from my stash.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it but DD thinks it looks Christmassy so I might put a binding on it and use it as a mat for nibbles.
