Hi, I'm new... / Re: Found you again
« on: August 31, 2017, 09:01:50 AM »
Former Plottie, Welcome!!

Love the new name - I have one too, I was formerly Jessie, but fancied a change.

Enjoy the new place, it's still full of interesting, knowledgeable people  :)

I now have the Featherweight, but can't seem to part with any of the others.....

Must get my head around it, some I don't use, some I can't use, and some were only bought on a whim.

Do I have a problem?  ;)

What lies beneath... / Re: Orange lingerie Marlborough bra
« on: August 30, 2017, 10:05:55 AM »
The big problem I have with making bras, is time....

I spent a weekend last year, making 2 toiles, but still not even close on the fit.

Maybe it's time for another go.

It's hard work, but she gets it spot-on in the end!

How could I forget the one I use most!   Thanks for the reminder Mal!

The Unpicker, without which, most of my projects would remain unfinished!

A Good Yarn / Re: Taking the plunge!
« on: August 29, 2017, 14:57:44 PM »
I don't know if it will help anyone, but when I'm sewing, knitting or crocheting, I have a piece of work on the side, where I can practise stitches or techniques.  To make sure it looks right, but also to help with the number count.  It's a right dogs dinner by the time I'm done, but it helps to be able to have a go at the stitches with out mucking up my 'good' yarn.

I suppose it acts a bit like a toile, letting me make mistakes where it doesn't matter.

I saw a lovely teddy at DD's this weekend, garter stitch, and appears to be all in one piece.  Just off to find the pattern.

Rulers, sharp scissors, buttonholer.

Not necessarily in that order  ;)

Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hi there!

Welcome Daisy!

The enabling process here is very subtle.  It starts with pretty pictures, and lots of nice people saying ooh, and ahhh, then you admire a machine, and have other people tell you about the machines they love..... then other people join in to enthuse about their machines.....

Before you know it, you have more machines than you can shake a stick at!  ;)

Ask me how I know  :S :loveit: :sew: :vintage: :fabric:

In the wardrobe / Re: Binding
« on: August 29, 2017, 10:09:37 AM »
I use either scissors or rotary cutter to cut binding.  I measure with ruler and pencil, make a mark, and cut. More usually I just use scissors unless the cutting mat is already out.  If the jersey slides about, use spray starch.

I like that when you make your own binding, it is exactly what you want, and exactly matches whatever you are making.

Table looks in good nick too.  I've just bought a table and Alfa machine in nowhere near as good condition.

I have a couple of pieces in the stash, and if anyone is interested I will put some pics up.  There is an orange, and a lavender/blue colour, both are stretch.

The Haberdashery / Re: Vintage pinkers?

SG, I bought a pair last year, can't remember what they were, but the name you mentioned sounds familiar.  Unfortunately, they didn't cut, even after sending them to be sharpened.

Best to try before you buy, particularly if they are expensive.  Mine only cost a few pounds, but I was disappointed.
