Overlockers & Coverstitchers / I've just been reminded
« on: August 23, 2017, 20:44:08 PM »
I've just been reminded why I bought an overlocker. I'm in the middle of making a kimono style top and I thought I'd overlocked all the edges I needed to but then I found I needed to do another, rather long seam. I was using my sewing machine, overlocker had been cleaned and covered so I decided to use the sewing machine to 'overlock' said seam as it does do a decent stitch. I started and it took ages to do just a few inches, so I uncovered the overlocker and whizzed round the rest. Also a neatly finished seam, I think it will be a while before I use that stitch again on the machine, it's the overlocker for me. I know it can be used for other things too.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / No FMQ for me
« on: August 01, 2017, 17:28:45 PM »
There I was an hour ago happily FMQ, I'm making covers for incubators for the local SCBU, when the needle hit the darning foot. I wasn't sure what had happened as this is an open toed foot, until I took the foot off and the plastic shaft had split allowing the foot part to move around on its own. So I now have to buy a new foot before I can carry on and complete the cover so no FMQ for me for a while.

In the wardrobe / Style Arc Flat bottom Flo pants
« on: July 30, 2017, 11:17:11 AM »
I wondered if anyone has made this pattern with just woven fabric instead of the stretch woven that is suggested. I've got a big piece of a 'thinnish' denim that I've had for ages and was going to use it as a wearable toile but it has no 'give' whatsoever. Would I be wasting the fabric?

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Which way first?
« on: July 11, 2017, 19:52:54 PM »
When making a quilt from squares or small blocks do you -
a) join squares/blocks to make lines and then join lines or
b) join blocks/squares to make larger blocks and then join larger blocks to make the quilt?
I've seen instructions to do both ways so any thoughts etc about which way might be the best or is there no difference?

I've just had a newsletter from Abakhan and it says that they are opening a new store in Altrincham town centre in June. So for anybody who is within a reasonable travelling distance there will be a new emporium to visit.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Batiks anyone
« on: May 08, 2017, 16:58:57 PM »
Not sure whether this should be here or in the fabric section but as a lot of people use batiks in P&Q I thought I'd post it here.

I've just had an update from FabricGuild and I thought some of these were lovely. I will probably go back for a second look and hope that OH has hidden the card :(

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Ruler quilting
« on: April 27, 2017, 21:40:22 PM »
I've just been watching a video by Leah Day about ruler quilting. She uses a special machine foot - Bernina, I've had a look and can't find anything compatible with my Janome or Elna. My question is - has anyone done this ruler quilting and if so which machine foot did you use? I've used cut out paper templates and used my ordinary darning foot that I use for FMQ but this foot that Leah uses is 1/2" across and with the needle in the middle will sew a 1/4" width between lines also. It was just a thought, it doesn't help when I think too much as it usually costs me money!!!!!

Events / Festival of Quilts August
« on: April 07, 2017, 12:46:17 PM »
I've just bought my tickets for the FOQ, I got an e-mail a couple of weeks ago to say that tickets were going on sale but for Quilter's guild members first. However I checked last night and they were available for the general public so fired off my order. Yeh something to look forward too.
