A Good Yarn / Fitting a knitted garment
« on: January 13, 2024, 07:36:30 AM »
There are scads of books, online tutorials and YouTube videos that demonstrate how to deal with fitting issues in sewn garments. Unless I am missing something, I can’t seem to find much in the line of equivalent resources for knitted garments. I would love to knit a basic jumper or cardigan but do not wish to rely on the ease to fit my body. For instance I believe knitting for a round and high round back would require short rows. The only knitter I know of that covers some fit issues is Amy Herzog. Internet searching just brings up fitting knits as in knit fabrics. I have checked out Ravelry too. I suppose I could ask on their forum but I thought I would ask here first.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Who can I give this to?
« on: September 20, 2022, 17:08:12 PM »
I started this quilt ages ago. It brings back bad memories and I want to get rid. It’s partially quilted by hand.  I must still have the quilting thread to send off to whomever would finish it. Would a charity shop take this, do you think?

£1.99 a spool. They only have the 100m spools but useful if you need a small amount of a certain colour.

Update: Just checked Jaycotts for comparison. They are selling it for less at £1.79 a spool!

House Beautiful / Covers for dining chairs
« on: July 07, 2022, 13:58:36 PM »
I would like to make some covers for the tops of a couple of my dining chairs. No matter how much I warn people and pull the table away from the wall, they still manage to back the chair up which hits the wall and leaves a mark. I have some pre-quilted calico fabric (in photo with chair) to make these covers. I have consulted the Internet but couldn’t find such a thing. I was going to make a paper pattern but am also thinking I could use some scrap fabric and pin something together to see how it looks (a chair toile?). I have enough fabric to self line them so they are extra cushion-y. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Patterns Discussion / A pattern similar to this…

I love the floaty sleeve and would make this for a beach cover-up. The pattern has translated instructions and a video (in French) but this adds an extra complication for an otherwise simple pattern. This is a new-to-me pattern company with some cute styles but I doubt I fit their overall silhouette.

Your Favourite Suppliers / English Couture Company

Unlike the slower turn around by Pound Fabrics, I received an order within 24 hours from ECC. They do a lovely lightweight cotton woven fusible interfacing. This time I will note down what it is so I know what to order next time. I have a box of interfacing bits from all over and I haven’t kept any record of what they are or where I bought them. Must get some organisation round here.

Sewing Machines / Where do I go from here?
« on: May 27, 2022, 17:51:06 PM »
I popped into a sewing machine shop today to check out the Bernina 475. I am after a 5.5mm max stitch width. I was surprised that a machine costing £1,500 featured 5.5 so had to see it.

The same shop sold me a Juki DX7 which I didn’t really use properly until lockdown. I had all sorts of issues with it. The engineer actually drove out and collected it to see what was going on. He couldn’t replicate the problem I was encountering and he declared the machine perfect. I tried to get on with it but despite many peeps waxing lyrical about this machine, I didn’t like it and it was sold.

Same salesman showed me the Bernie and it sound okay on a slow speed but once he increased it, the machine was like a lumbering lorry. I didn’t even bother to have a go on it myself. He confirmed what I already knew. These machines are not like they used to be. So too, according to the salesman, are the Janomes and Brothers. They don’t sell Pfaff but I expect he’d have the same opinion about them. The best machine he could recommend was the one I had sold and I certainly won’t be buying another one. He then showed me a Britannia for less than £600 and thought that would do me. He said it was better than many other higher spec machines. I wasn’t impressed with the stitching or the buttonhole (which he deemed wonderful) so won’t be opting for that either.

Apart from the stitch width - and I would compromise on a 7mm - I want a needle up/down button and a knee lift. Good harp space would be nice. I am primarily sewing clothes, the odd soft furnishing item and would like to have a go at bag making some day. I may do some more quilting/appliqué too.

What I took away today was there isn’t a decent machine out there for me, unless I want to spend 2.5K+. Can’t afford anything like that. I was hoping to spend a grand or less because I don’t need so many bells & whistles nor 650 stitches.
