I picked up these “left overs” from the de-stash table at today’s quilt group meeting. There’s a mix of good size pieces and long strips but if I add a few of my own scraps I should have enough for a Project Linus quilt.

If you don’t see yourself leaving the darkside anytime soon, I would recommend buying a bigger ruler. You can get rulers that are 6.5” wide but I prefer to have an oversize ruler for the size I’m cutting so I don’t have to line up the edge of the ruler with the edge of the fabric.

A 12.5” square ruler would allow you to cut 6.5” WOF strips if you fold the fabric in four and would also be useful for squaring up blocks and quilts. For cutting the squares from the WOF strip (or from scraps), a smaller square may be more manoeuvrable.

If you do decide to get another ruler, I would recommend sticking to the same make as your existing ruler.

Edit -  Ploshkin has similar ideas.

@Bjay I'm getting serious scrap envy.

I gained some more scraps at the quilt group meeting at the weekend which were left over from a quilt, so I will probably use these for the first of my first scrappy quilts.

I've posted this pattern on the sewalong thread and will be making a Scrappy Happy Rails quilt. The original pattern uses 12" blocks, but I might go for 9" blocks which this blogger has used.

I'll probably join in with this as I was planning on making at least one scrappy quilt for Project Linus.

At the monthly quilt group last year, we made a Scrappy Happy Rails quilt for the Siblings Together charity and thought it would be a good pattern to use for my scraps. We made the 12" blocks, but I might go for 9" blocks which this blogger has used.

Although the centre panels are all the same, two thirds of the quilt will be scraps.

@Celia It is obvious that Bill is very pleased with the machine. I do hope that the empty space where it used to be has bought you equal happiness.

That looks a great set up  :loveit:
I would be interested to know how you think it compares to the Bernette once you've had a chance to put it through its paces.

Can't believe there's no button foot with it though. Wth were Bernina thinking? Luckily, I can actually sew on a button by hand so that'll do till I save the millions needed for the Bernina foot.

@Bill What about this for attaching buttons? It’s cheaper than the Bernina foot  :P

Gutermann do a recycled version of their Sew All thread if you want a greener option.

They also have sets of threads which work out a little cheaper than buying individual reels if your mum is likely to use all the colours in a set.
For example, Jaycotts have these sets available:

@Acorn The only advice I can give is don't try to dry the hair by putting the doll in front of a gas fire. I did this with my Tiny Tears doll many moons ago and she had to have a head transplant.

I’m looking to destash this as I got the new version for Christmas.

The new version has 270 colours and retails from £30 to £57. This older version only has 252 colours and I am asking £15 including tracked P&P (but would consider near offers).

Payment by PayPal Friends and Family please, and sorry, but this is for UK only due to Brexit-related custom changes.

@AnthonyExmouth It looks as though you found a good deal there. The machine is very similar in its looks and layout to the mini machine, so hopefully it won't be too scary for your Mum.

As it is an ex-display model, it might be worthwhile taking it out of the box and checking that all the expected bits are there (feet can go walking )

Page 7 (printed page 3) of the online brochure shows what should come with the machine and where to find them:

Hi @AnthonyExmouth and welcome to the forum.

What a lovely idea to get your mum a better sewing machine. You mention that your Mum gets flustered by anything new so rather than try to pick a machine for her, she might like to try a few and see what she likes. Going by your user name, Exeter Sewing Machine Company may not be too far from you. (I’ve found them very good when I’ve ordered threads and other supplies, but I’ve not bought a machine from them.)
https://www.exetersewing.co.uk/

I’m sure other forum members may know of other shops in your area. If you are able to get to a shop, they will be able to go through the features of the machines with your mum. Shops may also have second hand machines that they have taken in as part exchange. These are likely to be serviced and can be good value.

Your mum might be familiar with Singer sewing machines, but the current machines don’t have the same reputation as the older models.
