Title: The ocean quilt - thank you for your help, it’s finished
Post by: Manuela on September 06, 2020, 03:07:11 AM
After the disaster with the fishy quilt last summer, I still want to make a quilt for the bedroom in Thailand (king size), something that resembles the ocean. I have all kind of blue/teal batik fat quarters, that are just waiting to be assembled into some sort of ombre/gradient pattern.

What I am hankering after is something like this, it would be just perfect

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Or this:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Given that my only successes in quilting (the Hazel Hedgehog and the Mondrian quilts) were achieved when I followed a pattern, I would most definitely need a pattern for this project. I don’t really know where to start looking, there was nothing that really grabbed me when I searched on Etsy.
Any help with the pattern search would be greatly appreciated.
And no, I would even dare to thing about free motion quilting  :faints:

You could do a bargello, or a twisted bargello like the one in my profile pic.

I'd be happy to run you up a pattern for that when I'm back home (later today), bargello patterns are lovely, lots about too. They work entirelyn gradients of colours for the effect.

Thank you @Syrinx, but that would be far too complex/difficult for me with my current skill set. What I’d absolutely love to achieve it the effect in the first  picture, it would look perfect in our bedroom (in Thailand)....

I am using this pattern for my oarsman quilt. I have eight groups of fabrics arranged in value to form the ombre effect and I choose one from each group to correspond with the numbers. Decide how big you want your quilt and cut the squares accordingly.
If you want to stick to the squares in your first picture it's simply the same plan. Eight groups of fabrics and arrange them across in rows.

Thanks @wrenkins  :) I came across that pattern, but didn’t like the HST and don’t quite know how to translate that into squares  I did however sort my fabrics into 8 groups from dark to light using a red filter...

Bargellos (not twisted!) are actually quite easy, just cut a lot of strips, sew together so you have a big row of strips, then turn 90 degrees and cut strips of desired size so you have strips made up of squares. Pull one strip down a square so each colour is on the diagonal. Pick the colour square to be the bottom. Unpick the seam to any squares below that and pop them at the top of the strip (this fills in the gap at the top) and then sew the strips together. Voila! Bargello. Much much easier than they look. And work on gradient colours. Twisted ones are harder because you have to mess with width of strips instead of making them all the same.

Best way to get your gradient right is a grayscale photo to check values.

I may join the mugrug with a tiny bargello, depends on time.

I can do a better with pictures explanation later today on the computer if you like.

I've no idea @Puzzler. I just know that I can't do random and I certainly couldn't do ombre. I would have stripes and no graduation.
I'm not placing my HSTs willy nilly. I'll place them in a chevron setting to look like wavelets and bow waves and wake. That's the plan.  :S
@Manuela don't cut you squares in half.  0_0 TaDah! No HSTs.  Once you start you'll find yourself thinking...'oh do you know what I could do....'  :ninja:

@Syrinx, you lost me at 90 degrees, I really need visuals and instructions....  :faints:
@wrenkins, just when I thought I might get it, you have me confused again. I really am thick when it comes to quilting  :headbang: hence me request to help me find a pattern.
It looks like the dream of doing something like in the first picture is not achievable and I really don’t like HST. Back to square 1

@Manuela the first one is called variously Coins, Stacked Coins or most frequently,  Chinese Coins. It's commonly done by using jelly rolls, the 2.5 inch wide strips sold together in a colorway. It would be easy enough to with yardage. The strips are sewn together then cut into the long narrow stacks. There are lots of patterns and online instruction. Here's a little video (https://youtu.be/M851x5SaSAI) that will give you an idea.

The second one is simple but I  don't know if there is a pattern per se. It's made from 8.5 inch squares with a top and bottom border each made from a quarter yard of fabric. We could invent a  pattern for you. We'd just need to know the size of the bed. I know UK and US sizes aren't the same.

I love the idea of it. Tranquil, peaceful and related to the surroundings. Nice.

I can't do bargello quilts. Too fussy for me.

Just had a look at @Stitches post, it resembles your first piccy, you could use that tut with your fabrics from dark to light to give you the ombre effect you want.
Title: Re: Help please - looking for a quilting pattern

Both of the quilts illustrated are just squares or rectangles, so easy to piece.  You could draw it out on squared paper - and remember to add on seam allowances.

The hardest part might be finding enough fabrics, and that's why we like fat quarters.  Patchwork is best if it's done with 100% cotton though a bit of poly cotton isn't a crime.  Your quilt you do what you want.

I wouldn't bother with Bargello, personally.
I love the first one you showed Manuela and it's quite straightforward. Just rectangles of the size of your choice, graduated colours and sashing. These quilts are very effective.
I did one with Kaffe Fasset fabrics and if I can do it, you'll walk it  :sew:

Thank you all, I feel a lot more confident now. The first one - my dream quilt - it will be. I got quite an assortment of different shades of blue and teal batik fat quarters, most probably more than enough to make a few pillow covers to go with the quilt. They include these - I got lighter and darker ones as well...

@rubywishes  FPP is one of those techniques you either love or hate. I've yet to meet a quilter who is ambivalent about it.

I fall into the hate category. Not really a strong enough word for how much I dislike it.  I'd like to pull a Farenheit 451 with all the foundation paper piecing books.

I should add it can yield some amazing results that just can't be done any other way. I just can't bear doing it.

I started after I finished this morning’s tutoring session. Thank you again to everyone who recommended coin quilts, I had no idea these things existed
So, I started with the 3 fat quarters of value 8 (the deep blue, i.e. the darkest), cut them into 5 strips each and pieced them together. Love the result so far   <3
Once I’ve done the other values, I’ll cut the pieces in half to get the coin stack - this is fun

You'd be surprised what you can quilt on a domestic. I've done King size on my janome 7025. Just need to be good at rolling and pin the living daylights out of it! Though if you go for a very high loft wadding it does make it harder. Rule one of getting a big quilt thaough a small machine is your basting lines (either part of your quilting or using water soluble thread) through the middle to keep everything together.

The pattern you've chosen Manuela is just made for QAYG in columns ... like the Bright Spark (still awaiting layering) which will be quilted in two hits then joined in he middle.
Title: Re: The ocean quilt - thank you for your help (planning stage)
Post by: Manuela on September 08, 2020, 08:52:58 AM
@Syrinx, I got a very lightweight silk/bamboo wadding - best thing for a tropical climate. I’ll definitely quilt as I go, as @Iminei says, this pattern is almost made for the technique. The ‘coins’ will be about 10.5” wide and I’ll probably do the sashing in the same width - so I might quilt it in 1-2 strip intervals.... I’ll see when I get there....

I am very happy with the colours and particularly happy the I found the seahorse fabric

Left the 2 lightest values - the shallow waters and bits of sandy beach
Right - the deep blue and some seahorses
There is still a whole lot of ‘middle’ to go...

@Manuela the red filter thing really doesn't work for me. I find a black and white photo much easier to work with. I had quite a few changes to make using a B&W filter and I also find a smaller picture better than a large one. Everyone settles on their own way of going.  :)

That is so definitely the right order for those dark strips;

I can see why the filter chose the other way round as the darkest tones in the SH's are darker than those in the Tile effect  fabric BUT the Lighter tones in the SH's are Lighter and larger than in the T's ....

If I were to be pernickety ... and Im definitely not going to be, its your quilt ... I would change the Reindeer (?) with the Feet too for the same reason but they are so similar, there is really no need.

Red filters only work for green fabrics - on the opposite side of the colour wheel.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

This shows four screenshots of the same colour wheel using red, blue and green filters, and none, in front of the laptop screen.  To have it work well with blues you would need a yellow/orange filter.  As @wrenkins said b&w works best.  Sometimes greyscale gives a slightly different result fromb&w.

@Manuela  The design you have chosen will lend itself well to any of the QAYG methods because it is already in strips.

Decision times again...
The red filter tells me ‘left’ (the turquoise has the darkest value), the black & white image tells me ‘right’, putting red and green filter on top of each other tells me ‘left’
The next strips will have greenish tinges.
Opinions are more than welcome...

I think the Turquoise should be top with the two blue blues at bottom ... especially if the next set have more green in.
Did you think to mix the columns of colour up a bit @Manuela  ??

Ie one column might have the leafy blue in and another might have the blue blue in? Or the columns might have the strips in different orders??

Please feel free to ignore me ... Once you start thinking about the order of random it all becomes a bit  :scream:

Title: Re: The ocean quilt - thank you for your help (getting there very slowly)
Post by: Manuela on September 10, 2020, 10:13:59 AM
@Iminei, my aim is to have one ombre strip first ... then I think about how to do the others, and whether or not to mix it up and how. The top blue one definitely reads lightest. Using the actual right side of the turquoise makes it read lighter (even through the red filter) due to the silver dots.

Here the 3 lightest colour values and the glorious silver spots on show.

@Manuela I've found I really need to lay all the strips out how I think I want them, step back and take my glasses off. Then I can really see the totality of it.

I think that brighter turquoise strip will work out once you get more of the brighter fabrics involved. Right now there is some tension between it and that last strip below. I sense antagonism between them.

It's always interesting to see how the relationship between fabrics changes as more colors and patterns are introduced.

Do you have access to a design wall? It can be a largish piece of Foamcore board covered with plain flannel or a flannel backed plastic tablecloth. Sometimes the pieces will stick or use a few pins.

@Renegade Sewist, nope, no access to a design wall and zero wall space to improvise one.
I’m going to cut out all the strips tomorrow and play with the,. My fingers hurt like hell from all the unpicking. I’ll most probably use the turquoise together with plain grey for pillow covers....

Got everything cut in strips and laid out. There is this big blob if blue in the lower half I’d love to interrupt, not sure how. A whole ‘ombre’ strip might not be the best idea, it’s probably best to swap ‘blocks’ of 3-4 strips around... the turquoise is gone and I found a bit more ‘water’. I’d also love to incorporate the 3 fabrics on the left, not sure how though. Again, opinions, advice, tips are all welcome.

@Manuela lay your sashing fabric down and lay the strips on top of it with the sashing approximating the intended width. That will show you what needs to be moved. It might be that some of your sets of 3 strips are a little too "matchy matchy " in value. I think that's what's happening where you see the blob of blue. It makes it visually a little bit static instead of evoking the sense of movement from the water that I think you were going for. The group of blue green fabrics just above it are a bit the same way. You could take one of the blue green strips and switch it with one of the "blob" strips. I think that might make it more dynamic.

That's just another person's opinion. Take what you want from it and leave the rest. What you are envisioning for your quilt might be very different than what I'm envisioning for your quilt.

If I were doing this, and remember I am a total hack when it comes to quilting and I often overthink them, I would have laid out all the strips first-on top of the sashing fabric-and rearranged them a few times until I was pleased. I will go to great lengths not to use a seam ripper or undo a seam.  ;) We all work differently.

Ok My two penneth worth ..... Please feel free to ignore some or all of it.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

On first sight my instinct is that 11- 15 should follow 1- 7 (7 should change places with 11)
20,21,22 and 16 then 9,10, 8, 17,18,19

1,2 & 3 (G1) and  7, 12,13 &14 (G2) are very similar ... maybe only use one of them in each column varying them across the width of the quilt.

4 though lovely doesnt go ... maybe if it was cut the other way horizontal stripes but its precut JR isnt it?

This is just a rough and ready first look ... using my eyes only on a monitor ... Real life might be very different.

@Lisalou1965 both are Kaufman fabrics, I found them in a local online store. The seahorses are sold out, the turtles come in two different colorways.

Values sewn together into blocks and laid  out - I’m happy with it.

As I don’t have anything that  could serve as a design wall, I played on paper. THis is what I’m going to do, the sashing will be grey, and will be the same width on top and bottom as on the sides..

Strips pieced together (not quilted yet), sashing finished quilting. This is a bit less than half of the quilt laid out (there will be 6 water strips) - not enough floor space for all of it. The border will be grey as well.
Next step quilting the ‘water’, then sewing the strips together. I read and watched a lot about QAYG... looking forward to see the quilt ‘grow’.

Thank you @BrendaP, I wouldn’t have gotten that far without all the help I got here sorting the colours out. There is still a looooooooong way to go.

Gorgeous! So subtle but very effective. Makes we want to try something like that. I look forward to seeing it finished.
