Title: Sold: Greist Buttonholer

Hi all,

I have a straight shank Greist Buttonholer for sale (£13), the device its self looks in good shape but has a couple of scrapes near the attaching end (did photo well), feed plate cover, 5 templates (1 more than normal) 3 screws and a foot attaching screw and a complete manual. Box isn’t in great shape pretty damaged and oil stained. 

Templates included:
5/8 straight
13/16 straight
1 1/16 straight
5/16 straight
1/16 keyhole

These Buttonholers are great very low effort, reliable, and produce a great buttonhole. I haven’t tested this one beyond looking it over and checking the motion.

Is it high or low shank please?

Hi SureStitch,

Thanks for your interest, this one is the standard Domestic model, pre-slant shank and before Griest produced loads of different types. It’s a low shank as far as I can tell, I use an identical one on my pfaff 30 and 201k

Here’s a couple of not great pics of it on a 201k... what can I say it’s a black shiny device on a black and shiny machine!

I suppose we say straight shank when the referance point is a 401 or something like that, but for Singer it's usually low shank, high shank and slant shank to differentiate. As long as my mind is on this subject there's: super high shank, back clamps, side clamps, various different fittings for the presser foot between brands. The first lant shank was the 301 introduced in 1951.

When I bought the buttonholer for my 201, the seller dated it to 1947. It's the standard black one with cams. At first I assumed it was a 1950s version of it; it came in the green plastic box. Later I have read this plastic box was intruduced before 1950, it might be. I bought it on ebay from the US. It reminds me, I have complete the cam sets for it.

I think Greist made the carboard box well into the 1950s; and it looks identical to my Singer version of it.

I’d completely forgotten about all the different Shanks.... work has been mad lately and I feel a bit like I’ve forgotten everything except the IT stuff I need for it

It's on a SInger 201 so it's low shank.
