Yes, my son has got engaged, yay 0_0
No idea when the wedding will be yet, although I'm guessing it won't be too long (and no, she isn't pregnant, poor thing has all sorts of "womens problems").
So, an outfit will be needed - I reckon it could be my favourite pattern Vogue 9112, but I will wait and see when it is before thinking about fabric.
Or I may just go and buy something...
-
Congratulations @Bodgeitandscarper . That's lovely news. Yes you will have to start planning your outfit. And a hat???? :D
-
Congrats, @Bodgeitandscarper . :flower:
My daughter gets married next year in June. I need to prepare. Diets r us to start. Will think of clothes in the new year.
-
Hats just don't suit me, so one thing less to think about :)
-
Congrats. Only a month to go for me. I'm more excited than my own wedding!
-
Many congratulations @Bodgeitandscarper . DD's wedding was three weeks ago now, seems ages. I was going to make a dress and jacket but saw a dress and bought it. I made a jacket and then didn't wear it because the weather was so good. As for a hat, I didn't want to wear one (I don't suit them) and it was only a small wedding but DD insisted I wear something so I ended up with an exploding sparrow (fascinator). Take your time Bodge and look around, what you think you want may turn out to be something completely different - ask me how I know!!
-
The wedding is now nine weeks away, there's not a cat in hell's chance of me losing any weight before then, so I'd better sort a dress.
For comfort, I think I may go with that old faithful Vogue 9112 (https://jaycotts.co.uk/products/v9112#.XJTskCieRPY), but in a fancy fabric. I rather like the idea of a crinkle silk, but not sure if what I have in my mind is what that is, if you see what I mean! And what colour? The bridesmaids are in either pale blue or navy, so I'm not sure if I can have my favourite colour of blue.
Or I could buy something, but everything I look at has a waist. I don't have one of those, not anything even vaguely resembling one of those.
And then the worst bit, feet!! I don't suppose I can go in trainers can I??
-
Or even turquoise. My opinion would be no, you can't go in trainers - if only because you'd feel at a disadvantage when the mother of the bride wasn't in trainers ( ask what colour she's wearing by the way). If you do have to get shoes, get those first before choosing dress fabric - it's easier to get fabric to go with shoes than shoes to go with fabric.
-
Thanks for the offer Fran, but I don't do hats :)
Good idea bout the shoes Greybird, I'll try looking for those.
-
Congratulations to all. I second what Greybird says about getting shoes first, but it's not a proper wedding outfit if you don't have something on your head, even if it is only an 'exploding sparrow'.
-
I hate anything on my head but as 'the bride' I had to do something so I wove tiny flowers onto some wire and had my hairdresser weave/fasten/magic some real ones in too. (Gypsophila) They were hardly there at all but definitely there...if you know what I mean. The whole ensemble was held in place with about four clips so defo not a big thing. :)
-
Nope, still not doing hats 0_0
Nor shoes either, having spent most of the evening trawling the internet... :(
-
What sort of shoes are you looking for @Bodgeitandscarper ? If you aren't going for heels then there are brands that do comfortable but dressy shoes like Gabor or even Hotter.
-
I agree @Bodgeitandscarper . My daughter is getting married in July in her garden, followed by a local hotel and I have a pact with the groom’s mum that we’re not wearing hats! Maybe you should ask mother of the bride as she might be glad to enter a similar pact :D, especially if it’s a smallish informal event.
I’ve bought a quite floaty summery dress, in navy and dusky pink which goes nicely with the navy bridesmaids and I also have a little bolero jacket to hide my arms |O. Shoes and handbag are bought too. I just got medium heeled sling-backs from Clarks which are pretty, but very comfy and the perfect colour of dusky pink. It’s important to feel good, but also comfortable in your outfit.
-
My daughter's getting married in June. She still hadn't shopped for a dress. Neither have I. Flour sacks R Us at this rate.
-
@fajita my friend's daughter is getting married next month - the theme for the wedding is "favourites", which includes asking all guests to wear their favourite clothes. Father-of-the-bride will be wearing his walking trousers and fleece!
-
Shoes, I hate shoes!
I've looked, and the odd pair I've found have been out of stock or not in my size (8).
It's probably sandals I'm after, although a peep toe sling back would be a possibility. I don't/won't wear tights, so shoes are a no-no with my sweaty feet, and a fabric footbed is preferable to a plasticky one in a sandal. I like espadrilles, but they need to be a bit dressy. Oh, and no heels, I don't do heels!
I rather like (Don't click on the following link unless you're confident in your firewall and virus protection!! - Acorn) these (http://www.dd-mgmt.co.uk/truffle-collection-pink-peep-toe-flat-espadrille-sandals-p-3023.html), but it looks a dodgy website, and I'm probably not going to be wearing pink!
Any ideas of places to look??
-
Have you looked at Evans? They do a lot of eee fittings.
https://www.evans.co.uk/en/evuk/category/shoes-250471/wide-eee-6970310?currentPage=4&dual_run=monty
@Bodgeitandscarper
-
I've never worn a hat either, not to weddings, christenings, funerals... anything.
-
Thanks, @fajita, but nothing at all there, apart from a pair of platform espadrilles. I can't wear platforms or heels, as firstly I can't walk in them, and secondly I'm 5' 8" and t'Other Half is also 5' 8" (swears he's 5' 9", but he isn't!) so I end of slouching and stooping next to him :S
-
Simply Be have a few different things and try https://www.yoursclothing.co.uk/wide-fit-shoes, they had some EEE black diamante ballerina pumps. If you want to go barelegged, there is a foot spray that makes you feel like you have got socks on and saves the sticking/rubbing. I think the can was pink. Kiwi Silk Foot Spray, but there are others apparently, but I've used this one..
-
I bought my posh* shoes from J D Williams. (https://www.jdwilliams.co.uk/shop/eee/footwear/1/_/N-10ssZ1ytvwfl/products/show.action?cm_sp=JDW-Shoes-_-SizeandFit-_-ExtraWideEEE)
I'm not sure whether you need a wide fitting, but these (https://www.jdwilliams.co.uk/shop/wedge-espadrille-slingback-sandals-extra-wide-eee-fit/lz285/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=9059#colour:Navy,size:) are the ones I have, and even though they have small heels, they don't feel as though they have. They are incredibly comfortable.
Oh - and AVG told me off for going to the website you linked to, so don't order from them! I do like those shoes though.
*And when I say 'posh' I really, really don't mean expensive!!
-
Bodge my lap top went off like a pinball machine when I hit that link. :S
Those wedges are lovely @Acorn :loveit:
-
How about these?

-
Thank you everybody for all your suggestions, I'm still checking them out :)
These might do the job, I like the pattern and colours, but I bet they don't fit...
linky (https://www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-laney-tie-leg-ballet-flats/prd/10339489?clr=scarf-print&SearchQuery=&cid=6459&gridcolumn=3&gridrow=13&gridsize=4&pge=3&pgesize=72&totalstyles=291)

So, these (https://www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-laney-tie-leg-ballet-flats/prd/10339489?clr=scarf-print&SearchQuery=asos+design+laney+tie+leg+ballet+flats&SearchRedirect=true) and these (https://www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-wide-fit-voyage-square-toe-ballet-flats-in-blue/prd/10896717?clr=cornflower-blue&SearchQuery=asos%20design%20wide%20fit%20voyage&gridcolumn=2&gridrow=1&gridsize=4&pge=1&pgesize=72&totalstyles=2) ordered! Not what I thought I'd like, but best of a bad bunch - and cheap, very cheap :)
-
Nope, still not doing hats 0_0
Nor shoes either, having spent most of the evening trawling the internet... :(
Good for you, I hate hats, hats hate me and if I had to go to a function that necessitated wearing one I wouldn't go
-
The shoes arrived and they are lovely. BUT, they don't really fit me, the wide fit are far too wide, and they really, really don't suit my flat feet that roll inwards at the arches, so they are already on their way back. I hate shoes, almost as much as hats!
-
Oh dear. I agree that too flat isn't very comfortable. I'm afraid you'll have to bite the bullet and visit a real life shoe shop. :S
-
I wouldn't dismiss trainers out of hand. They are absolutely the latest thing, you hardly ever see shoes in London anymore, it's all trainers in lots of colours and styles, even with very smart outfits.
What about something like these (https://www.wantthattrend.com/rose-gold-bow-trainers/)? They channel both the both trend and the shiny/metallic trend? They'd look fab with that Vogue dress.
-
Hmm, tempting...
-
Have you looked at these patterns for the wedding @Bodgeitandscarper ?
Not sure if you already have started making something yet?
https://butterick.mccall.com/b6660
https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v9254 (long sleeved version not the sleeveless one)
I thought either of these dresses would look good with a pair of dressy type trainers?
-
I like the Marcie Tilton one...
Jessie
-
Thank you, @Lizzy777, I like the second one, but if I make one, it will be my favourite Vogue, err, can't remember the number!
-
I have bought some fabric, I think I like it, but it may be too soft and drapey, we'll see. I just need to find fabric for a jacket in one of the plain colours now - and a pattern, I fancy something a bit wild and whacky, or at least a bit unusual!
-
Lovely material, it should be easy to get a toning plain for the jacket. The pattern says stable knits, cotton and silk, which sounds as if drapey is fine.
-
Ooh that’s classy @Bodgeitandscarper. Should look lovely.
What colour trainers would you go for?
-
Yes. lovely fabric - and any of the colours in it would be nice for a jacket.
-
Ooh that’s classy @Bodgeitandscarper. Should look lovely.
What colour trainers would you go for?
I do have a couple of pairs that would go... 0_0
but I suspect I may have to buy some sandals :(
-
Thank you, @Lizzy777, I like the second one, but if I make one, it will be my favourite Vogue, err, can't remember the number!
I just love that pattern... I made it up and I looked like a bag lady... I’ve never been so disappointed... I really wanted that dress.
-

@Efemera I suspect that my style is bag lady... 0_0 0_0 0_0
-
I have now ordered fabric samples for a jacket - the cobolt blue here (https://www.fabricuk.com/fabrics/36-silk-fabric-dupion.html) looks just the thing! It's a tad pricey though!
-
That will be lovely made up. Silk is always worth the money. I haven't seen dupion anywhere for less than about £19 pm so it's not bad.
-
Go on! It'll be gorgeous.
-
Still toying with the silk dupion for Butterick 6383 (https://butterick.mccall.com/b6383) - I thought to make it without a collar so the dress collar sticks out of it. The pale lilac sample goes well with the dress fabric, the two blues were wrong.
Oh, and I have these (https://www.pavers.co.uk/products/leather-sandal-kary27005-312-118?variant=21265712283733) grey/silver sandals, hooray 0_0
... and a bag (https://www.joebrowns.co.uk/sp+That-Special-Day-Bag+AD686?glCountry=XX&of_tid=MFRWG5B5GE2DCJTGMVSWISLEHU4CM4DSN5SESZB5GMYDMNZRGA&adGroupId=21471028847&device=c&gclid=Cj0KCQjw7sDlBRC9ARIsAD-pDFqvKQJVUOc-k4LXX4CKWupHqy3G8snOf5MFfqa_m5xNEu9zxXlCF_8aAkFkEALw_wcB) to (hopefully) match on it's way.
-
Stick with the silk - you're going to look lovely!
-
So... more fabric samples for the jacket, a dark denim blue faux silk (£8/m), a chalky lilac shot taffeta (£7), and the (expensive!) lilac silk dupion(£20/m). I love the texture of the real silk, but love the prices of the faux silks!
-
One of the lilacs most definitely. Personally I think the textured one would be the best for a jacket and the colour looks perfect. A smooth, shiny fabric would show every seam and join and pin hole because there is nothing to draw the eye away.
-
That one over on th right. It's gorgeous! It's the expensive one, isn't it? But you're getting what you pay for, and you are a VIP at this wedding!
-
It's going to have to be the expensive one isn't it? :P 0_0
Just need to decide if I'm doing Butterick 6383 or a simpler (but to my mind, older lady style - my mother used to wear them!!) Chanel style jacket.
-
Don’t do the ‘old lady’... go for funky...
-
Definitely go funky - I love that jacket and it would be perfect with the dress. Also love the sandals and am seriously considering buying them myself!
-
The textured lilac silk.
-
Allowing for monitors and so on I think the textured fabric is better for colour. Also it's totally gorgeous.
Go for funky!
Why wouldn't you? 0_0
-
Sorry to say it, but the expensive one on the right is definitely the one to go for. It looks great with the dress fabric.
Yes, go funky!
-
The expensive one looks very similar to the stuff I got for DDs wedding seven years ago. If it’s any help I paid £25 a meter then.
Go expensive and funky, you’re worth it 0_0
-
No frumpy Chanel jackets, be sassy! Go funky, go glam. Ruffles and all!
-
And just think how proud of you he will be!!
-
I'd always go for dark, plain colours and an understated 2 piece suit style ( no hat, gloves or bag ) .... but......if you dare - go for it and blossom in the sunshine :)
-
I've ordered the expensive textured one - but saved a few bob by also ordering the much cheaper shot lilac to use as the very big facings 0_0
Trouble now is, I've run up a very quick toile of the top half of the jacket and the fit is crap :(
I just hate shoulder seams that hang right off your shoulders :(
Dunno where to go from here, probably need to find one of my other patterns that fits better and use that as the shoulders and armholes and sleeve top I suppose. I hate faffing around with patterns!
-
What is it with patterns these days, they all seem to be made for American footballers. I never used to have a problem and I'm sure my shoulders haven't shrunk.
-
I like all three colours, however I think the lilac for the wedding would be best, and then later on you can always make more jackets in the different colourways if you want to widen the choices of wearing the pansy fabric.
-
What about a Tilton jacket pattern?
-
I’ve got narrow shoulders so I have to change all top patterns to fit
The easiest method I’ve found is to put a dart shaped alteration to the shoulder seams on the pattern pieces
Worth a try
-
Having tried on a couple of jackets, I do have one pattern that fits quite nicely on the shoulders, so I will need to make a frankenpattern I think, shoulders/armholes/sleeveheads from that and the rest of the jacket from the new pattern. I did also want to widen the neck so the dress collar sticks out of the jacket, but not sure how well that will then sit, should be ok I think.
-
I also have narrow shoulders. I get round this by cutting one size to fit my shoulders and then grading out to a bigger size from the bottom of the armhole. I have to make sure the sleeve head fits before cutting.
-
I've done most of the jacket, side seams, shoulders, and sleeves in. I don't like it!! I no need to try to decide what to do about it. The shoulders and sleeves are fine, and there is plenty of material in the body to re-shape it, but I can't decide how. I think that a loose baggy jacket over a loose baggy frock over a loose baggy body is just too much :'(
-
Yes, I know what you mean about things being fitted, @Francesca, too baggy isn''t flattering. I tend to go for fitted shoulders and through the bustline, then looser from below the bust. This works well with the dress, but I guess the jacket just isn't fitted enough anywhere. I was thinking about taking the side seams in a bit, and possibly some darts in the back. I can't really make it too fitted as it has no bust darts, and I have of course done the seams on the overlocker, so I don't want to attempt to unpick them!
-
I agree -fitting through the shoulders and bust is the key. Perhaps not the most obvious fashion icon but note the way that Angela Merkel's jackets always fit well at the shoulders then flare out a bit over the tum . Not that I'm suggesting you should channel the Merkel look at the wedding @Bodgeitandscarper !
-
*goes off to google Angela*
-
Yes, Angela Merkel is a look to avoid! But I see what you mean!
I'm trying to decide how long the frock will be (it's a bit of a trade off of shorter looks funkier but longer covers more of my horribly fat legs, and I mean FAT), then I may pin the jacket up to a much shorter length and see how that looks, and maybe take the side seams in too.
-
It depends whether or not funky is flattering. I would go for what looks best on you. My own feeling is that more of the dress showing from under the jacket would be better than less.
-
My own feeling is that more of the dress showing from under the jacket would be better than less.
I think that describes it exactly, I need to get the dress hemmed then look at the jacket again :)
-
Ooh yes, I was going to suggest shortening the jacket for a more cropped style.
-
You know I said I was NOT going to wear a hat?? Well I'm not but...
-
Definitely hardly a hat at all! 0_0 It's a long time since I've even seen anything that looked less like a hat in fact.
That first one is very smart. :loveit:
-
the first one - definitely!
As mother of the bride 2 years ago I was informed that I had to wear the largest hat - so I did go for quite a big one - then mother of the groom turned up in a ginormous one (fortunately I couldn`t care less about such things)
-
I think I like the first one better too.
Sandra.

Bodgeitandscarper, before you do anything else to your jacket, do you happen to have a collection of jackets in your wardrobe that you could try on over your wedding outfit dress to see how they look or rather will any of them give you the look that pleases you. If you do find something that is the right shape/style then perhaps you can then try and alter the cut out jacket pieces accordingly from the already cut out pieces - I am sure all is not lost though.
As for your accessory for your hair, I like both, possibly the flower on its own is the one I would go for.
Hope you can find a way of saving your jacket.
-
My vote is for No 1 too.
-
The first one, definitely. As MOG you need a token hat. You can take it off at the reception. I also hate hats (&they hate me) but I had one made for my MOB outfit.
-
I thought the first one too. One slight snag, my hair is very slippery (that's a good thing, right?), so the clip that fastens it on to the hair is just sliding out. The clip on the flower is different and stays put much better. I thought to swap them but second one is glued on and too short anyway for the first one, so I'm now on a hunt for a stickier clip! Or maybe I could put some silicon sealant stuff on it...
The jacket will be rescued somehow, @Elnnina , I thought about trying different jackets but then realised I don't really have any apart from one that's a multi-piece Vogue that is not the look I want with a dress anyway. I'm going to do lots of pinning of the jacket to see what looks best, and I may even iron it on hot to soften it up as well - yes, I've tried it on scraps, and it's nice, much softer, when washed too, but I'm not sure if it shrinks, so may try that again. Anyway, it's being left for a few days as we're out tomorrow, then away to my son's on Sunday til Wednesday.
-
Yes, I like the first one too. Mother of the groom calls for a lot more than just another wedding guest. You don't want to be "out-outfitted". You can always take it off after the ceremony.
-
Love the first hat/facinator, it really suits you. I also had very slippery hair - before I lost most of it - I found fascinators fixed to a velour covered hairband worked best for me, as it kept them firmly clamped to my bonce for the required amount of time.
-
I’m still sticking to the no hat pact with MOG, but if you’ve got 2 you’d be prepared to wear I’d say wait until you can try them on with your outfit and then decide. Both look good.
-
The silk jacket is practically finished - never have I taken so long over one garment! It didn't help that I had to re-style it after I'd made it :o
I ended up reshaping the front, moving where the point came, shortening it, and then I had to try to cut facings with it all still sewn together.
It's all done now though, apart from a final dilemma - shoulder pads, should they go over or under the facings? I've sewn the facing at the shoulder seam, them put the shoulder pad over the top, my reasoning that the edge of the pad won't show so much (and I'd already sewn the facings without thinking about the pads!). But - that then leaves the pad all exposed..., so maybe I need to unpick my teensy tiny handstitches on the facings and put the pads underneath?? And yes, I probably should have made the back neck facing the same width as the front facings, or vice versa.
-
I unpicked and put the pads under the facings, and it's now finished, hurray.
-
Very nice! And that button ties the dress and jacket together beautifully.
-
Success! Your adjustments to the jacket have been very worthwhile.
-
I have two more of those big buttons to replace some coconut shell buttons on the grey/silver sandals, pics tomorrow when I've done them :)
-
All sorted now. New buttons put on the shoes, big silver ones to match the jacket button, and some hot glue put on the clip of the fascinator to make it stay in my hair. The only thing I haven't had to do anything to is the handbag - although I hate chain straps as they just slide straight off your shoulder, so may have to do a quick google for alternative straps...
The accessories really do match better in real life, the pic has made them all look different colours.
-
Really beautiful Bodge! Love your button idea for the shoes - which are perfect btw!
Lovely outfit for a very special day!
Jessie
-
@Bodgeitandscarper
Love the outfit and the buttons are the finishing touch.
That jacket looks great with that single button (less is more, as they say).
Going to have to buy that pattern - the collar is soooo effective. 0_0
Annie
-
I have discovered that non-sewers are very impressed by covered buttons. I did some on my jacket (matching the dress) when daughter got married and it was the main thing people commented on!
-
Lovely work Bodgeitandscarper - now you can sit back and relax knowing that this is now out of the way. Have you enjoyed making these garments, the colouring is really excellent. Fingers crossed that the day is kind to you weather wise and that you and your family can enjoy a lovely day.
-
Bodge I love it you will look fabulous on the day enjoy every minute of it
-
Ooh @Bodgeitandscarper that's absolutely lovely. You will outdo the bride  xx
-
@Bodgeitandscarper
How difficult would it be to add short sleeves to that dress ?
(I really like the pattern but NEVER do sleeveless).
Annie
-
Thank you all for your lovely comments <3
I have to say I am really pleased it's all finished, and I even bought matching nail polish and lipstick 0_0
-
@Bodgeitandscarper
How difficult would it be to add short sleeves to that dress ?
(I really like the pattern but NEVER do sleeveless).
Annie
@annieeg Easy enough I guess, I'd just be looking at using a sleeve from another pattern and perhaps copying the armhole too from another pattern so they fit together.
-
That's a beautiful outfit. Love the colours and I love the accessories you've chosen.
Sandra.

I'm just catching up with this. It all looks really lovely and you should be so proud of it! The jacket is a runaway success I think. Looking forward to seeing you all dressed up in it for the wedding! Congratulations to your son and his bride by the way!
