I forgot all about this. I want to trace my size off the master pattern rather than cut into it. I used to use a roll of medical bed paper which worked really well and was very cheap. I doubt the NHS would approve here so what do you all use?
-
I use Burda tracing paper. It comes folded with several quite large sheets in a pack. I usually get it from John Lewis or Abakhan but most fabric shops will have it or you are bound to be able to find it on ebay.

I use this tracing paper. Lasts for ages https://www.amazon.co.uk/Royal-297mm-Sovereign-Natural-Tracing/dp/B002120GTK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511559894&sr=8-1&keywords=tracing%2Bpaper%2Broll&th=1

Thank you. I'll have a look for that. :)

For large patterns I use pattern paper that I bought on a roll from somewhere online (sorry not helpful but I think I googled pattern tracing paper or something!) and for small stuff I use parchment paper for baking from the supermarket. I use a lot of pdf dancewear patterns as I buy from the US and Australia and always need to trace them. I also like to hack patterns and don't want to spoil the original with my new 'design' :P

Oh that is a nice big roll. I think I'll buy that. Thank you!

Burda tracing paper...
-
I use Burda too - from Ebay

I use this (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gateway-1016-Natural-Tracing-Paper/dp/B00KB4NP2A) tracing paper by Gateway, which I buy from an art supply shop. It's the largest roll that I could find at the time and is ideal for big pattern pieces.

Timely, I just bought a new roll for myself last week.
I, too, use the medical exam table paper that I brought with me from the U.S. When I ran out, I looked for an equivalent in the U.K. and I thought the "couch roll" was the same thing so I bought it. Well, I should have noticed that the description says "2 ply". It was basically a giant roll of toilet paper!
So after some intensive search on Amazon and Ebay, I ended up ordering the medical exam table paper from American Amazon. This one. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007AH74VO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Even with the shipping, it was much cheaper than any other tracing paper.
It's not as wide as the "real" tracing paper but it fits well on my kitchen counter where I trace my patterns and it's 68m so lasts quite a long time. I can also use the scrap paper as a stabilizer.

I use Swedish tracing paper. The place I buy from is doing a deal today!

I have always used Burda but it is a nuisance having to unfold it and even iron it before you can use it - I would definitely buy a roll in future so thanks for the recommendations
-
I use table cover paper, 2 huge rolls for around £20 from Costco. It feels like a lifetime's supply. It's not perfect, but it does the job.
Of course, it can also be used for covering tables....

Agree it’s a pain. I now iron about 2 packs,so 10 sheets at a time and then roll it around a cardboard tube from a roll of fabric, which I asked for when I bought some fabric.
I’ve tried all sorts of paper as I always trace off my patterns, but like the Burda paper the best for making full bust adjustments etc, where you’re taping layers together and the closest to pattern paper. It would be fantastic if Burda put their paper on a roll.
I guess it’s about finding the right one for you. The medical paper sounds interesting though.

I use this http://www.tts-group.co.uk/dressmakers-squared-pattern-paper-80cm-x-15m/1005580.html
I have a packet of burda paper but i find it too thin. Does anyone want it?

You will discover more things that we don't have in the UK. I envy US citizens for the wealth of sewing related products available to them. Hope you are not planning on making a winter coat because you won't be able to find Kasha lining or even satin backed flannel.

If I've run out of my stock and have needed to trace something I have used greasproof paper before today. ☺️

Good idea! And it's strong.

I use a tracing wheel and cheapo lining paper from B&Q/Homebase - the cheapest I can find. The only downside is that it does leave small holes in the pattern oh and big square washers to hold the pattern down. Thinking about it B&Q is very useful for 'sewing related items as I use S hooks to hang patchwork rulers and have bought small containers for buttons, safety pins etc and nail/screw boxes hold machine needles - sorry to go a bit off topic.
-
Talking about putting Burda paper onto a roll - why is it that since I threw away 2 carboard tubes that came with some fabric I bought I have discovered numerous uses for them?
-
Mainly Burda tracing paper, but I also have Dot & Cross Paper.
I saved some large sheets of paper that some furniture was packed in. :D There were several sheets about 1m x 2m, quite useful.
-
As part of the clear out, I have just dragged the large roll of too thick tracing paper  from underneath the sideboard. I'll be donating this later in the week.
-
I use greaseproof paper or sometimes brown paper
The medical paper sounds good, but I always have greaseproof lurking around and have tons of it, only downside is that because of the waxed quality of it it’s hard to stick together

I had just about run out of pattern paper and as this was such a good price I ordered some on Monday, and it was delivered on Wednesday, so it only took 2 days to travel all the way from the US to Blighty, which was mightily impressive.
I would definitely order it again, but looking at the amount on the roll I think I have enough to keep me going for a good while yet.
@Hachi - thanks so much for posting the link to the product :loveit:
-
I donated the MASSIVE roll of too thick tracing paper to charity and will keep this thread in mind for when I return to sewing.

Glad to hear you liked it!
Looking at my order history, my last roll lasted 2 years :D

I wonder if this is the same sort of paper - from Amazon UK
ETA: wait a minute, it's perforated but I don't know where the perforations are. Probably not so good.

That stuff is absorbent and has perforations, so no I don't think so.
Edit - I read your edit after I wrote my post :)
-
I wonder if using a UK debit/credit card on USA site will be okay. Hmm ...
-
Sewbee,
I have used my credit card to buy stuff from the USA so there shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, that's the giant toilet paper stuff I erroneously bought :S (Note the "2 ply" description) STAY AWAY~
-
I'm not going to ask what you ended up using it for!!! :o

I use this too, my roll has lasted me ages.

I use the plain tracing paper from Morplan. It was what we used at college. I like the fact that it comes indifferent widths so no taping together for large pieces. And it's on a huge roll which lasts me years. Never got on with dot and cross. The lot I used I didn't find very accurate and it made my head ache trying to see what I'd marked. :)
-
I bought my last roll from Morplans and it was too damn thick for me to see through. I gave it all away when I moved home as I thought it might be fit for wall lining paper. I will be going back to my previous art supplier.
-
I'm usually tracing my own patterns so can see quite well. If not, they're taped to the window to copy. I like that it is pretty tough and some patterns have lasted years.
-
I used Swedish Tracing Paper but postage to Ireland is steep, so then I thought I'd be clever and get something cheaper from Amazon. So now I have one large roll of stuff that you can barely see through, and another roll that's so stiff it's impossible to pin and curls up when it's looked at. I give up - it's back to the wonderful Swedish for me. Last thing I need in my sewing room is more useless clutter!!
