The number of my machines has outgrown the number of spaces, and my thoughts of dressmaking came to naught - so a re-think is ongoing.

The following will be for sale:

Singer 99K black and gold hand-crank - lovely condition and (obviously) fully working - photographs will follow  GONE

Bernina 830 Record (this has knee lift) in red plastic case. Photographs will follow  SOLD!  :)

Later there will be an electrified Singer 201K with the cast (heavy) body - but this isn't cleaned yet. SOLD

There may be the lovely Vesta hand-crank sometime, if I can ever get it moving the way it should!  :)

I haven't looked for prices online yet, and as most of you know pick up would be from Somerset unless we could get it moved to where you are - you'd have to ask folks about that  :)

But letting everyone know, so that if someone is keen to have one of these they can let me know before I get organized to posting them on n auction site.

So do shout out with questions or whatever here if you are interested.

Thanks

Vintage Machines / Saved from the skip - TWO! Singer 201Ks
« on: March 27, 2023, 16:37:49 PM »
I look at sewing machines for one of my local charity shops - my neighbor is a volunteer there - and make ure they work, suggest prices and so forth

Today there were two Singers, and both turned out to be electric 201s!
There was a brown one, nice condition, still all original brown pedal, cables and so forth, it all moves now I've fettled the bobbin area, so it's in the "special room" for PAT testing.

The other though has no cable or foot pedal. As it can't be PAT tested, and can't be sold as is, it would have gone in the skip :(  So we've made a donation and brought it home to see what we can do. I have a black foot pedal, but no cable or plug to fit the machine motor - but all things are possible with the wonderful Helen Howes!
It has no tool box lid, and no tools to speak of, and would once have had a small extension table too, but I can sort most of those things from here.

I'll let you know how it progresses.

Vintage Machines / I just couldn't resist . . . VESTA
« on: February 17, 2023, 12:00:20 PM »
Despite repeating my mantra "No more sewing machines" very regularly, and every time I see a skip outside a house, I failed when a machine appeared on my local freecycle.
A photograph of a wooden case that was not a Singer, and the note that the case is locked and they don't have the key. Been in the cupboard for at least 20 years, they don't remember what it is. Free to collect. How could I could resist - it might have been anything in there!

I have a collection of keys for just such adventures!

Turns out it's a neat Vesta, vibrating shuttle machine, marketed by JD Williams Manchester probably 1930s. It's jammed at the moment but I think it's age and disuse rather than rust or damage, and I hope it's going to come back to life beautifully.

Not sure what will happen then though - oops!

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / FREE 50 g ball of Teeswater yarn
« on: February 16, 2023, 19:34:20 PM »
Have a random ball of pure Teeswater 4 ply from Blacker Breeds. (Some years old, not a yarn they stock anymore)
Natural cream colour, lovely lustre, but not going to be suitable for socks unless I wash them preciously by hand every time!  :)

So if anyone has a use for it you're welcome, or I'll drop it into a charity knit box sometime.

Happy New Year to all!

I am planning on making a version of "Grass" from Sunday Morning Quilts, and have been saving green scraps for a little while. But if anyone is having a de-clutter this new year I would be most grateful to receive scraps of medium or dark green.
Anything bigger than inch by inch could be used - but a little bigger would be even better (and less fiddly!)

Happy to pay P&P in the UK if anyone can help.

Many thanks

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Quick view of my oh so tidy space
« on: November 22, 2022, 10:43:25 AM »
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  Was in the workroom with the camera, so here are a couple of shots of my room. You can see some of the machines and the big machine in cases at floor level. No sewing going on at the moment, hence the relative tidiness     . . .

Having decided that I am done with dressmaking, and will stick to other sewing and knitting from now on, I'm going to let go my patterns.

Most of these have been opened, and the pattern pieces separated off from each other (but not cut on the lines, if you see the difference) so that I could trace them and make toiles. They still have their envelopes and instruction sheets too obviously.

Would anyone like any of these, does £5 each plus P&P sound alright?

That's the very first notice about Shetland Wool Week 2022, which I've just missed

But by following links it's possible to read quite a lot, and watch the daily videos on youtube and so on, so I hope some folks will find it interesting.

Technical Help / Making a T-shirt - my 2023 goal. Where to begin :)
« on: October 11, 2022, 16:14:58 PM »
Setting goals for next year well in advance . . .

I would like to be able to make T-shirts. Straight, up and down, for a man, extra extra long.
My OH never seems to be able to find what he wants in the colours he wants, and he hates that so many that describe themselves as long do not come down far enough to keep your back warm when you're 6'6" and bending over gardening!

I do not have either an overlocker or a coverstitch machine, but my vintage Bernina will sew stretch jersey according to the booklet, so I have hope.

First thing - I have no idea what exactly the fabric for a t-shirt is described as online - advice appreciated.
Second - there must be some tutorials or links for folks to sew items like this on vintage machines, I'd appreciate any links folks might know or use themselves.

And then anything helpful you might like to say LOL

With thanks and fingers crossed for my 2023 goal
Leila

A Good Yarn / Next two jumpers
« on: August 16, 2022, 14:17:11 PM »
Now that I have replaced my printer, I can get  couple of patterns downloaded and begun.
My OH is having "Englishman in New York" in blue Kremke soul wool ( a recycled yarn)
and for me "Cornfield" by Drops but in a burgundy red yarn salvaged from a jumper I knitted him 20+ years ago that he never wore LOL
