Post by: Manuela on April 23, 2019, 06:00:01 AM
Has anyone used the Singer Side Cutter Attachment? I am quite intrigued by this video, and think I need one....

@Manuela, Interestingly I've been looking at a similar accessory for a Brother Machine.
@jesster  did give some feedback from the Bernina version but it wasn't particularly positive.
The Brother version is not expensive, and I'm wondering if its robust enough to last and also how quickly the blade will remain sharp.
The bonus for me is that it would be useful to use on my Brother machine which I use as a mobile machine if sewing in the garden, or elsewhere and it would be efficient if I could do seam neaten at the same time.
I'll mull it over ...

It looks suspiciously like a walking foot to me.  8) Imagine the mayhem if a darksider got their sticky mitts on one of these.  0_0 :snip:  :snip:  :snip:

@annieeg  In the mid 80's I bought a new sewing machine direct from Brother in Audenshaw, my sister worked there so I got a huge discount it was  Brother Compal Opus 845 and a side cutter attachment  was included with the accessories. It was the only sewing machine I owned for nearly 30 years and my goodness, did it get lots of use!

I still have it but have never used the side cutter, so here it languishes. I bought an overlocker at the same time but omg that was completely new to me and I sold it years later never having done other than look at it with bewilderment.

Might be tempted to get the old machine out and try the side cutter, see if it works, I know the machine still works fine, Mike had it out and put it through it's paces a couple of months ago. Not bad for a 30year plus 'computerised' sewing machine.

Here's a youtube video of the same model, has a different badge, Compal L but is an identical model.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fb9vdIj0a1M

It's for cutting and over-edging simultaneously. The overlocker has mostly superceded this device.

I have however, used one for cutting bias binding. Square of fabric cut on diagonal and sewn together to make a parrallelogram. Sew together ends offset by width, then place the fabric against a guide of same width and feed round and round. No need to mark fabric, loadsa bias binding.
