Current Projects / Aaaaaand finally it’s done

I think I had told you that I was making a beacon of hope quilt for DD2. Finally finished

...and grew, and grew! Hi my lovelies, I have not been about for a while, life just got in the way of living, as it has a habit of doing - work, work, work, and my poor youngest daughter has not been well for a while. Anyway, less of the gloom. Over the last three months, i have been working on a hst quilt, inspired on the Beacon of hope pattern, and using up bits and bobs, you could say it is partially a scrappy quilt (I did have to buy the background colour and the backing)
Thing is, this started as an exercise to practise my hsts, right? A little lap quilt, right? Not right. My daughter (youngest) saw what I was doing and said "Oh this is finally MY quilt, isn't it? What can you say? So I thought, well a big cuddle quilt will be nice, and I grew the pattern a bit. But my idea made it a big big for a lap/cuddle and a bit small for her double bed ...sooooo

Not yet finished, but I have done the top - comes in at 89 inches square, fits her small double nicely - but, now my backing fabric is too small - bought before the growth spurt - and is no longer available. I am debating in making frames with the purple fabric so that the back is sort of windows - if that makes sense. Whatcha all think?

Will attach photos in a minute - techy probs

I am stumped. Husband has asked me if I would make a "trip around the world" quilt for our bed. It will be the biggest quilt I have ever done, and the pattern requires 13 fabrics, plus backing. I have thought about it, and have some idea of the colour combo I like, but how to go about choosing 13 fabrics that will go well together? I am maybe not making sense - if that is the case, please tell me, and I will try to make myself more clear. Thing is, this is going to be quite an investment in fabric, for me, and I really don't want to bugger it up! Can anyone give me tips on how to start?
I have gone on patternjam and put this together, but when looking at actual fabrics online (where I can't really put them against each other) I get really lost!

Interesting topic (well, I think it is) which comes up as a result of a couple of answers on other threads...what do you do with your quilts when you finish them? Admittedly, I haven't made that many - haven't counted either - maybe 15 or so? Some crib, some larger, some lap quilts. I have only just got around to making a lap quilt for me, to stay with me. I know some people just put them away and go on to the next one, others just give em away as fast as they make them. Some for charity, some as gifts. What do you ladies do with yours?

Just wondering

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Darkside Books
« on: April 23, 2020, 16:32:15 PM »
Hello to all you lovely peeps. I am aiming to buy a book of quilting blocks, and would prefer something with a lot of the traditional patterns. Upon perusal I find that there are literally hundreds of options. I wondered if anyone could recommend a book they have enjoyed and use for referencing patterns and block sizing.
Thank you xx

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / How do I quilt it?
« on: January 19, 2020, 11:27:24 AM »
Much as the title says...I am linking to my quilt top in a different thread and wondered what the gurus of quilt would suggest. I had though of stitch in the ditch, cos that I can do, but it hardly stretches me and I like to learn something new in every quilt if possible. The only thing is that with such "busy" blocks, I am not really sure what would work.
I would be happy to have some tutorials or ideas shoved my way...purlease, pretty please

Current Projects / Lap quilt for a young friend
« on: January 13, 2020, 20:57:40 PM »
Hi Ladies! I have been a bit quiet recently but not entirely idle. This is a belated Christmas gift for a young friend of my son’s. The blocks are finished and I am just trying to decide the position of the blocks. The fabric underneath is the one I am going to use for the sashing.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Antique quilts

this quilt has been in my family for over 100 years. I thought you might like to see it, it is very special to me. It was made by my great grandmother

I am working on a quilt for eldest daughter, it’s a double and a big project for me. I have the top finished but cannot make up my mind what I want to do with the underneath. What I do know is that I don’t want it to be plain. She and her partner have three cats and this block is called “cat’s cradle”. I know it isn’t perfect, but I am dead proud of myself as it looks the part. It is 11 inches square.  I think it will feature in the centre of the back.

My birthday is coming up, and my mother has asked what I would like. I have a 24 x 6 inch which I use a lot. I have heard that the 6.5 inch square ruler is great, and also that the 2.5 inch is good. Which ones do you all have and which ones would you not be without?

Hi, I'm new... / Hello from Sunny Spain!
« on: August 19, 2019, 14:48:30 PM »
Hello to everyone! I am so pleased to have found this forum! I was a member of the old TSF and missed it so much when it disappeared! I imagine not many of you will remember me, as I did no post often, but so many of your names are familiar from TSF. I learned a great deal from many of you!
I have not been sewing much over the last four years due to work commitments - looooong story, but such is life, but I think that I will now be able to devote a bit more time to my beloved hobby. I am not very good, a newbie really, but I do enjoy sewing. I love quilting, but am also trying hard to learn more about dressmaking.

As for the rest of what makes me tick; I love cooking, and experimenting with different styles of cuisine, I am married to a long suffering Mr. Man, who puts up with the trail of pins and thread that surrounds me, and I have three children, the older two, girl and boy, are all grown up, and the youngest girl, is 12 and now about to start secondary school. I love animals and we have one dog, chihuahua, Pocket, who is eight and two cats, one is in my avatar, that is Domino, and Bobbie, who is a recent rescue, an ENORMOUS Maine Coone.

So, I look forward to being here and sharing in this lovely forum. By the way, I have baked an enormous chocolate cake, would anyone like a piece?  0_0
