For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Wanted- Union Dress
« on: January 28, 2019, 07:58:07 AM »
I'd like to buy  a non-pdf uncut copy of the Merchant and Mills Union dress pattern. Or I could swap it for the Dress Shirt pattern (unused). UK only please.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Over locker and coverstitch shopping
« on: January 07, 2019, 12:44:30 PM »
ejvc on another site suggests using honeycomb stitch (if your sewing machine has this) instead of a coverstitch. I have tried it, and it works on a medium weight jersey ok, but is less successful on a lighter weight.
I have a Bernina combo overlocker/coverstitch and it is a PIG to alter. I think I did it once successfully.

A Good Yarn / Re: Hot water bottle cover pattern needed, please
« on: January 07, 2019, 12:39:21 PM »
I made one for a xmas present out of a leopardskin cotton Tshirt fabric in my stash. I just cut two rectangles of T shirt fabric, twice the length and a bit more (enough for a neck) and doubled them up . I used some bra strap elastic to pull in the neck (loose enough to get the bottle in and out). My DGS thinks he is taking a pet to bed!

Fun with Fabric / Re: Do you wash fabric?
« on: January 07, 2019, 12:25:29 PM »
I sometimes cut a square (say 5cm by 5cm), pour boiling water on it, squeeze it in a towel then iron it dry. Then I check for shrinkage and change of how it handles. (Not advisable for synthetics!). I mostly use natural fabrics, linens and cottons, and in the summer will wash the whole lot first (after overlocking).  This takes out (most!) of the shrinkage.

Sewing Machines / Sashiko Machine
« on: December 31, 2018, 12:58:06 PM »
Hi, has anyone else got once of these machines? What have you made on it? I bought one about 18 months ago, refused to listen to the dealer when he tried to demo it in my home, and spent months trying to rethread it. I eventually watched an online tutorial and realised that if I had listened I would have understood that it only looks like conventional threading but is certainly not. I haven't thought of a freehand project yet (Wabi Sabi style) but will probably start with a shopping bag as my old ones I made are beginning to wear out.
My local Oxfam shop has a craft corner that does a roaring trade - sells donated bits of cloth and threads and other habbie stuff. One person's reject is definitely another one's treasure !

Hi, I'm new... / Hello from Bristol UK
« on: December 31, 2018, 12:42:27 PM »
A thanks to Imei for sorting out my registration. I am retired, make stuff (lots of different stuff!, mostly on sewing machines) and my current interest is Japanese dressmaking books (although I haven't made anything from them yet, as I may end up looking like a bag lady encased in oatmeal linen.
Xmas makes were PJs for DD, a xmas sack and hotwater bottle for DGS, and I appliqued his dad's (bought) t- shirts with gnomes from a patchwork remainder.
DD unearthed (and wears) a famous Fair Isle sweater (Prince of Wales pattern) that my mother knitted 30 years ago for her father - I checked online and they are nearly £300 to buy.
I was Mcgintie on Stitchers Guild.
And...I have actually met Manuela!
