There will be white sashing between each block and probably a wide top and bottom border with strips of colour.
Thank you
-
Bottom one for me.
-
Bottom one for me too. :)
-
Youre liking the Black and white option ????
-
Yes
-
Another vote for the black and white option. To my eye, it seems to tie the pairs of coloured blocks together better than the mixed option.
-
Bottom one for me too.
-
Bottom for me too.
-
Top
-
Erm.. I may be being stupid but the 2 pics I can see look exactly the same as each other -<
-
@Lowena. The bottom pic has a black and white centre square. The top pic has a coloured centre square.
-
@Lowena, it's the centre block that's different.
If you do Ctrl with -, the screen will scale smaller and you'll be able to see both blocks at the same time. When you do it jumps out.
the version with the black and white in the centre shows up the colour symmetry because it creates a lighter zone and a focus point.
what will it look like when you have several blocks separated with sashing?
the version with the colour in the centre will give a more overall effect is you have several blocks separated with sashing.
I think you need to see a layout that includes more of the pattern repeat before you decide.
-
Thanks girls. I think the black and white one looks odd -<
-
Top for me.
-
I like the bottom one. I don’t know why, but the black and white block seems to pull the others together.
-
@Morgan how do I get the page size back please?
-
Control and + get it bigger again.
I agree with most of the others, teh second one with the black and white looks better; I think it's just that little bit of neutral that pulls it together.
-
Thanks @BrendaP you're a gem
-
You are indeed gems, @Morgan @BrendaP
I never knew I could do that and you are right the B&W stood out for me too, tho' I may have to make another as one of the strips is misplaced :(
That is the complete quilt Morgan, bar the sashing and top and bottom strips of colour. I'm just waiting for the garage to call and give me the car back so I can pootle to the Emporia and get the last bits of fabric.
-
Late to the party :'( but I think the bottom one as well. The black and white gives a good focal point and balance tho I would like to see it laid out with the white sashing to see whether that alters the impact.

Well here's where I'm at and I now have a bit of a problem ... I have precisely 13 1/2" of the white on white left.
No problem I thought, I will just head off to my local Emporia after collecting the car and get some more!
Having handed over an eye watering sum of money to the garage, I drove to The Emporia and walked confidently in.
I headed to the whites and was struck dumb....
My heart began to race and I started to tremble ...
Where their extensive range of white on whites used to be were Beiges!!!!!!
Usually there are more than a dozen bolts of WoW, you can barely find a plain white ...... now ... NONE!!!
I started dashing round the Emoporia ... maybe they had moved them .... NO !!!
Maybe they were running low so had cut them into FQ's, so I scurried round the FQ boxes ... but to no avail !!!
They ... Had .... NO .... WoW's ... at ... all!!!
In fact the whole Emporia looked a lil threadbare (if you pardon the pun!)
Now I do not anticipate this being a big thing its a Makower essential after all but it now means ...
I have to post off a snip to various Emporias across the country
and wait for that to get to them
and for them to get back to me
and then for us to make the transaction
and then for the fabric to get to me !!
and this Quilt should (hopefully) be leaving the country at the end of this month!
-
Can you post a picture of just the WoW fabric? From what I can see by zooming in on the photos, it looks very similar to something in my stash (if my memory is not playing tricks as it has been there a while).

Here you go @StitchinTime

That piece is 13.5 cms x 10.5 cms so the design is really small.
I could post you a snippet ... How much do you have ??
-
@Iminei This is what I have in my stash - similar but not the same. I also think it is more an off white than a white as it is from the ebony and ivory collection (there’s a sheet of A4 copier paper at the top of the photo for reference). I do have ~2.5 m of it if you wanted to redo all your sashing.

Let me send you a piece ... I really don't want to redo .... but if its close enough in colour ??
I will of course pay retail price + p&p
In the post first thing, you'll (hopefully) get it Saturday!
Thank you SIT

If SIT's fabric is no good I will be on the phone to Doughty's, LSnS and Cotton patch but GGRRRR having to wait,
I suppose I could do some more to the Village, a flamingo perhaps ???
-
Why do you keep running out of fabric @Iminei ?? I never have -< do you change your mind once you've started something? or do you miscalculate? I know you can't be messing up and throwing away as you're too good for that, but I'm truly intrigued as to how it happens <3
-
I generally use from my stash ... so although I had a good metre and a bit it wasn't enough.
Also I don't plan these things ... they just evolve!
I've packed up and am going to make a chilli for tonight's dinner ... whilst watching Remains of the Day ... such gentle measured performances from two of the finest actors! Bliss!
-
Crisis averted thanks to the wonderful peeps at Midsommer Quilting (https://midsomerq.com/)
I now have 3 m's of the white on white and 2 1/2 ms of a beautifully crisp Kona white and Makower Deep Red ... I was a bit surprised when Imself offered to take me to MQ early doors yesterday but jumped at the chance and am now all set to crack on and finish the quilt.
-
Top finished ....

Bit concerned about the wibbly sashing (in the top 3rd between row 1 and 2) ... could it be because the sashing was cut LOF instead WOF ... mind you the other sashing is ok so ?? I'll see if it bugs me enough to unpick.
Now for the back ... using the multi coloured block.
-
Very nice :flower:

What's LOF and WOF ?
If you are bugged by the waviness just re-do the seams in the borders and taper slightly towards the outside. That should be enough to sort it and no unpicking required.
-
Length of fabric and width of fabric @BrendaP :)
-
Ahh!
LOF = lengthways = warp direction = parallel to selvedge
WOF - widthways - weft direction.
Lengthways/LOF - is more stable/less stretchy than widthways/WOF.
-
Will it press out or is it too wibbly for that?
Great quilt top, btw - looks completely different now all the sashing's on. :flower:

Finally Layered ... Phew!

In the end I had top resort to a lightbox under the three layers to align the back and front.

Quilted, trimmed and ready to bind ... but which one

Which do you think ... 1,2 or 3 or 'none of the above' ? In that case which way should I go ???
Help Please Gals!
-
I love them all... I think the bottom one just about has the edge for me.
-
Bottom or top but the bottom one just nicks it for me. Lovely! :loveit:
-
Middle one
-
Just a thought ... What about a scrappy B&W border ?
WHY am I making more work for myself ? Can someone please explain????
-
I usually bind my quilts in plain black if an option doesn't jump out at me
-
Me, I'd pick a plain colour that I want to be the "dominant" one, but then what do I know? #Iamnotaquilterandneverwillbe
-
I like the top one.
-
I like the top one too [with the bottom one coming a very close second].
-
@BrendaP Can I have your thoughts please, O Goddess of Colour ??

@BrendaP Can I have your thoughts please, O Goddess of Colour ??
Buggery Buggery B****** have just discovered I don't have enough of No 1, (the stripe with the brown ) In fact all I have is the binding that is already made, I will go and measure but I dont think there is enough but I have found these options ...

The only thing I can see wrong with this is that there is purple in it which is not in the quilt
-
But the purple isn't super dominant, it doesn't "take over"....it doesn't drag your eye in....well, my eye anyway. :) Looks good to me. What about the middle one in the first group? I liked that one too.
-
The Blurry Batik ?? is a bit sludgy (as batiks tend to be) in parts
I quite like the last up because it has some White in it ... like the Paisley's ...
its a pity I dont have an orange or yellow Paisley, that would most certainly be my choice then ...
-
Hmmmm, yep, I forgot about the "baby poo mish mash" you can get with multi batiks. Yep, you're right.
-
I would have gone for the 3rd one of the originals but I like the latest. I think the white ties it in with the quilt. Didn't notice the purple until you mentioned it.
-
Why stress yourself @Iminei ..... just choose a fabric you have enough of ( I know that you don't have many that fit that brief :P ) put it on, get it finished and....move on....simples :ninja:
-
Bound, pinned and ready to finish!

In the end the batik wasn't too sludgy, in fact the sludgiest of the colours were a nice orange tieing in with the yellow orange blocks nicely.

I made a Flange binding as I want to Bombproof the quilt with a machine sewn blanket stitch and I didnt want
multi-coloured thread showing through on the back.
-
Looks beautiful @Iminei - flange bindings are so effective and easier to do than they look. :) The finished quilt is gorgeous with all those colours together. <3
-
I'm partial to a flange too. That binding is perfect Iminei
-
finished! (https://photos.app.goo.gl/BIPavjADP7jB0iB72)
-
'Tis gorgeous! 0_0
-
I said that binding would look the best....
-
and it was the binding I bought for it in the first place ...
but you know, above all others, how we can doubt ourselves, don't you Low ???
you was right Hon, well done!
-
It's beautiful Iminei. I like the little extra small rectangles at the ends - they add a little something to the design.
-
Yup, they certainly do ...
they add an extra 4 1/2" each end, taking it from a square to a rectangle!!!! 0_0
-
Yay, my sludgey batik wasn't too sludgey afterall!
I do like your flanges Im......are we friends enough that I can.... errrrr, comment on your.... ahem, flanges? ;) They are lovely. Wish I had flanges like you. sigh :loveit: Can't do 'em for love or money
-
My flanges leave a lot to be desired too @rubywishes ..... let's be flange failure friends :D
-
I'd never heard of flanges before this thread, but they do indeed look very fine. I shall look them up at some point, but I don't expect to try them out for a good long while.
-
All you need to do is piece your binding lengthways, cutting 2 strips of fabric ....
For a flange cut the fabric you want to see a 1/4" (I cut mine 1/2") wider than the second fabric
Join the WOF on the diagonals as you would a normal binding and then sew the two together lengthways.
Fold exactly in half and one side will have that strip of colour on.
You can work out which way to attach it for yourselves.
For a dual coloured binding (which I believe I invented, well in my head I did cos I googled and couldnt find anything like it )
For a 2 1/2" binding (the usual size) Cut one fabric 1" wide and the second 2" wide.
Proceed as above and press in half.
You will have one side all one colour and one side two colours but when attached you should have one side Red (for instance) and one side White.(FI)

FFF's it is! And we'll hold our heads high and be proud of our non-accomplishment!!
