The Haberdashery / Re: Cone to spool?
« on: December 21, 2023, 08:06:54 AM »
Correct thread tension is very important when sewing (just like guitar strings!), and so I’d be wary of trying to wind your thread onto a spool by hand. The diy mug cone holder system should work fine for now, so I’d also recommend doing that.

Sewing Machines / Re: Brother A16 ????
« on: December 18, 2023, 10:43:03 AM »
Yes, that’s a good choice. Personally, I don’t rate the modern Singer machines and I’ve a couple of ladies in my sewing group with the modern Singer ‘Heavy Duty’ machines that I think are marketing pish.

The A16 is a decent beginners/intermediate sewer machine with a really good needle threader. In my opinion, the recent Brother Innov-is range have the best needle threaders on the market. I’ve recently bought the Brother A65 as my portable machine to take to classes.

However…if you’re going to be making bags with many layers where seams meet and fold over, you might want to look at a straight stitch proper heavy duty machine instead. I make bags on my domestic sewing machines but will take it v slowly over very thick layers. I can sew 8 layers of denim on my Brother (I tested it), but you also need to use the right type and size of needle for the job and the correct type of thread too.

If you’re a newby sewer, start with the basics. I’m going to tag @Bill not because he’s a bloke, but because he’s made quite a few bags now and has had a steep learning curve regarding sewing machines… and he’s become very knowledgeable in the process.

Bravo! 🥳

You did a fantastic job of sewing it up and kudos to Sylvia for being the same size 40yrs later! 😇

I’m also fascinated that you wouldn’t know that pattern was 40yrs old, as the cut is a classic style. Incredible really. I doubt many of my clothes would stand the test of time even assuming I could fit into them. DH on the other hand is still skinny as a whippet and has a few items from the 70’s that he can still wear inc. a colourful silk jacket…😎

Thank you @Ohsewsimple

Yes, I suspect poor cutting out on my part. No other trousers I’ve made have ever done this although it was a new pattern, but I think it was me rather than the pattern and I should have been more careful.

Lesson learnt!! 😂

I made some v. wide leg trousers out of a dark pink stretch velour for a Christmas lunch do. They are elasticated but quite loose at the waist (to allow for scoffing), and when I wore them yesterday, they kept twisting around the crotch area.

If I re-did the waist and tightened the elastic by a couple of inches, do you think this will stop them twisting? Or have I cut them out wrong with the grainline off? I did make them v quickly, so not my best efforts by far.

@Puzzler    Yes, I’m wondered that too. 🤔 Some people hardly change as the years roll by but others… I was a size 10, 30 yrs ago. 😢

Tech Know How / Re: Too Good to Lose section

I agree with you @Bill.

The Tutorials section seems to be full of Tech advice rather than sewing how-to’s, hints and tips. I’ll have another look.

Edit: I think I’ve found them but they do seem a bit buried.

Technical Help / Re: Sewing Stretchy fabric.
« on: November 25, 2023, 16:23:27 PM »
Apologies for wasting everyone’s time… I’m a total divvy! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

I looked at the fabric again today with my cut out pattern pieces and… the stretch is widthways after all. I’ve no idea how I got that so wrong but thankfully, I hadn’t cut anything out.  :S

Technical Help / Sewing Stretchy fabric.
« on: November 20, 2023, 16:51:05 PM »
I’m thinking of making some palazzo/wide leg trousers for party wear. I’ve got some very stretchy lengthways polyester velour type fabric in a pinky red colour. There’s no stretch widthways as it’s more like a woven in that respect.

Will it be ok to cut and sew it so the stretch is going down the leg or do I need to sew it the other way? I’m sure that other stretchy trews I’ve had or made have some stretch widthways?

Maybe the answer is obvious but I’ve gone completely blank. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

In the wardrobe / Re: Oversized hooded sweatshirt/fleece
« on: November 17, 2023, 07:49:50 AM »
I made a couple a few years ago for myself and DS. Because it’s meant to be worn as an oversize baggy layer, I made a quick pattern using an old sweatshirt as a guide. Yes, cutting the Sherpa style fleece was messy but I used my Overlocker to join all the seams together and it was actually a really quick project.

Last year I bought myself a dupe from Dunnes in Ireland for about €20 (very similar shop to M&S), but I find it too warm to wear most of the time. I’ve just looked online and they’ve got several versions for women reduced to €15. 😳

Sewing Machines / Re: Brother NS80E

@Sara-S   you’re a bad influence! 😂😂

I’ve just sold my very basic Singer Simple to one of the ladies in my sewing group who bought it for her neice as it was my original spare machine so hardly used. I then sold my Brother FS100 to another lady in my sewing group as her old Toyota machine had packed up and I thought I don’t need it and I’ll stick with my Bernina 475 for all my normal sewing needs.
But I’ve now realised it’s a bit heavy to be lifting and taking to my group every week plus the palaver of packing it up each time so…

I just bought myself a Brother Innov-is 65 which is very similar to your lovely Brother machine but it’s a new model and comes with a thread cutter, which is a must have for me these days  as I’m so used to using one.

Not exactly festive but I’m making some simple Tote bags for our local animal charity to sell on their Saturday market stall. They were given some curtain fabric and I’ve used some bits from my stash to do the appliqué and pocket. They’ve asked for a suggestion for a price to sell them at and I was thinking between €12 -€15 maybe? Hoping to make a few and I’ve roped in a few of the sewing group ladies to help make some too. 😇 some of the ladies don’t want to do appliqué or pockets so the basic bags can be priced at the lower end perhaps?

Patterns Discussion / Re: Ideas please. Velour party pants?
« on: October 24, 2023, 15:32:02 PM »
@Helen M

Thanks for the tip. 👍

I’ve used several pants patterns from style arc so I’ll check them against their other patterns and adjust them if it looks like they need it.
