Title: Books about bag making
Post by: warpbywarpweft on May 07, 2018, 17:44:47 PM
I'm looking for a book to inspire, challenge and instruct, if anyone is able to help?

I've seen lots that cover totes and other fairly simple bags, I make those already so I'm looking for a book that covers slightly more complicated bags.  Rucksacks with fittings and handbag type bags, purses woukd be good too.

TIA!

The description is in German (if you want I can help you with that), but I love this bag, it's not easy to sew and it was the inspiration to construct my own bags.

That's the ebook with the full description:
http://www.roswithapax.de/schnabelinabagebook.pdf

And here are the diffenrent sizes of the patterns to choose:

here is also a youtube tutorial (in 2 parts):

I recently bought this (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1782212566/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but haven't made anything from it yet. I've had a look through it and there seems to be a good range of designs.

There are several free patterns available if you ask Mr. Google too!

I have Sew Serandipity Bags (https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=sew+serandipity+bags) - though I haven't made anything from it.  Instructions and patterns for a dozen different bags, one of which s a back pack which converts to hand carried bag.

Instead of a book, have you checked out the groups that sell patterns to download?
They have all levels of bags, with good instructions and some have video sewalongs/tutorials.
There are a few free patterns to download, and lots of inspiration from other bag makers.

RLR Creations, Bagstock,  Sacotin,  ChrisW Designs,  Blue Calla to mention a few.

Even just browsing what others make, gives me lots of ideas.

(Just seen the post that Lizzielogs started on free bag patterns, that has links to some of the sites)

The Better Bag Maker (https://www.amazon.com/Better-Bag-Maker-Illustrated-Techniques/dp/1607058057/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525742169&sr=8-1&keywords=better+bag+maker)  by Nicole Mallalieu. Lots of techniques for a professional finish. Each bag is a variation of the first pattern - a basic tote bag - with instructions for the alterations required to achieve lots of very different looks from one pattern.

Not books but online tutorials?
Ikatbag has two series of tutorials on bag making. Lots of explanation of why she does things particular ways.
