In the wardrobe / Help needed
« on: May 21, 2020, 18:29:46 PM »
Stumped at the first hurdle. Ok, I am a complete beginner, so please be kind. This is my first ever make. I managed to cut all pieces out fine, it's a crepe fabric so it drapes nice, I've always wanted to make my own drapey top. Anyway, I can't figure out what I am meant to do, I know what a stay stitch is, but confused by the picture with the pleat in the V of the neckline. How do I do this and am I supposed to do this now? I have just started and not sewn anything yet. I am sorry if this is a bit rambling, I am not used to the terminology and jargon yet.

Fun with Fabric / Aldi
« on: May 18, 2020, 11:18:51 AM »
I didnt know you could shop online with Aldi. Just took delivery of these fat quarters, so I can explore the world of quilting. I think they are great, and good value at around £7 for 12.

Tech Know How / Forum diarys
« on: May 04, 2020, 11:16:09 AM »
I have noticed some members diary threads on a couple fo different areas of the forum. I would like to make a diary to chart my progression but I am not sure what I really want to focus on, I may be a darksider I don't know yet. I want to dabble in all things. Anyway, where should I create my diary if it isn't going to contain just one type of sewing like quilting?

Hi, I'm new... / What are your top tips and must haves?
« on: April 30, 2020, 20:11:33 PM »
Hi all. I'm a novice with a little experience of using a machine. I have my new machine coming this weekend. During this crisis, I have not been able to work, and being a bit of a workaholic I need something to do. I have always been a bit crafty when time allows and would love to really get into sewing. My inspiration was mask making with lots of old bit of material I have, but that has just got me a bit obsessed with everything I want to do! I have spent ages watching videos, reading posts on here and getting tons of ideas. In the long run, I think a sewing course would be a good idea for me and will do that when we get back to normal. I would love for you all to give me a list of your top must-haves as I am so tempted to just buy everything! Also your top tips for me as a novice sewer.

What are your must-haves?
What are your top tips for a beginner?

Sewing Machines / New sewing machine trouble
« on: April 29, 2020, 13:12:24 PM »
Hi all, my first post. Thank you for allowing me to join. I am not new to using a machine, I know the basics and have used on and off most of my life. I decided to buy a new sewing machine because of isolation I have more time on my hands and sewing has always been one of those things I have always wanted more time to get into. I bought a Bernette sew and go 7 from Singer outlet recently, it cost me £280. The first time I used it I had problems. It wasn't sewing right, the stitching was wrong. It seemed to me that the bobbin tension was wrong when you pulled from the bobbin it was as loose as anything. Anyway after hours of trying things, reading, watching videos I got fed up with it and thought, this isnt right, I shouldnt have so much trouble with a brand new machine, I should be able to just go on it and sew right? I have decided to send it back and have messaged them 5 times now, with no reply as yet. I guess they may be busy, but that has peed me off too, so won't be buying from them again. I have been having a read on here on what people recommend (wished I had done that before buying), and found a Janome 5060QDC for £399, I like the look of it and feel its something I can grow into. I would love to hear your thoughts on my troubles and recommendations. Thanks for looking.
