Hmmm......

About 5 years ago I had a great idea  :\ to one day make a mini quilt using mini hexi papers.

I've never tried making anything with any sized hexi papers and these are quarter-inch ones.  :S I'm not overly fond of hand stitching so I don't know if I've got it in me to do this, but I've got some Liberty lawn fabrics now put to one side with some white Egyptian cotton to use as the background.

I'm thinking about it.

As small as you want ... @Sandra  I think those mini hexies would be above and beyond ... Dont do it!

Ha, ha... 0_0
I've cut some little bits of fabric out this afternoon and I've had a go at wrapping the fabric around the hexie to see what I think.
I think I'm going to attempt it but I don't know if it'll get finished.

 :scream:

I think I'll have a go to test out just how fiddly they're going to be. The fabric I've cut out to wrap around these little pieces are three-quarters of an inch squares.  :S
Sometimes I have the patience to do time consuming stuff and other times I don't.

Do you know I think I might like to join in this one, I love the idea of quilting but I think the scale is wrong for me, I like making small things, so maybe this is it.

Off to look for ideas

I started off thinking 20”x20” was small. Having made a couple of small squares, I’m now thinking 5”x5” would make a nice little coaster sized quilt

Not so @Renegade Sewist  @Iminei doesn't do hand sewing much, for a couple of reasons whereas @Sandra is a very neat and precise professional sewist.
She'll ace it......

I'm thinking of something about 12" x 12". Is that in the size range for this challenge?

I'm thinking of something about 12" x 12". Is that in the size range for this challenge?

@Sara-S , yes. In the world of quilt shows it's generally 12" to no more than 24" per side and reads like a big quilt. Imi did say it could also be not so mini for your fur baby. Your size would be lovely.

An example is mine, a gift from the original owner of the local quilt shop. Roughly the size of copy paper it's 5 x 7 blocks. Finished blocks are 1½" square. Solid setting blocks are quilted with a ½" hand stitched heart alternating which 9 patch blocks. The patches are each ½".  :faints:

I once did a Sunbonnet Sue in 1930s feeling fabrics  in 1" = 1' scale. The Sues were fused then blanket stitched with sewing thread. I don't think I quite finished it. It wasn't my idea to begin with. Someone was "teaching" me how. In those days I was doing 90 stitch to the inch petit point.  :faints:

oh @Sandra I think a paper hexie that small.. I'd breathe it in accidentally    :o

I'm in for the challenge! If I finish this mini quilt it'll be the first quilt I've ever finished, batting and binding and all  :D I've made a couple mug rugs but that was a long time ago and they were pretty haphazard.

oh @Sandra I think a paper hexie that small.. I'd breathe it in accidentally    :o

0_0 I'm being very careful that I don't waft them off the table when I've been working with them.

I've made a cautious start to see just how much of a faff it's likely to be.
I don't have a proper plan as to what it will be like when it's done and I haven't tried to calculate how many hexies I need.

Some little bits have been joined up. I quite like joining the bits up.
Not so keen on wrapping the little hexie and putting the few stitches in. That's really fiddly and a bit of a chore but I did get into my stride after I'd done a few.

Do they remove easily when you need them to?

Using the glue stick you do have to pull a little to free the papers.

@Sandra ... Cant you give them a damn good press when you're/after you've wrapped them to keep them in place whilst you stitch????

@everyoneelse ... It would be wonderful if you entered ... These Competitions/Swaps/Events wouldnt be anything without YOU!!!!

Anything as large as or smaller than, I should say, an A4 piece of paper or A4 square sized would be truly a May's Mini Marvel, but if you want to make a quilt for your furbaby please make it 24" square or less

But remember the main aim is that without anything for perspective it should look like a full sized quilt!

Please post pics of your fabric and progress in this thread and make up a lil entry complete with pics by the 5th of June!!!

Looking forward to this ... Who knows I might even sew along!
Title: Re: Mays Mini Marvels
Post by: Sandra on May 06, 2021, 08:16:07 AM
The main problem I have is, of course, the scale of these things.  :S

I can't imagine being able to apply a neat little dab of glue without too much being applied and then making it difficult to remove the paper afterwards. It's lawn too. I don't want to risk any stickiness seeping through. Hate sticky.

Regarding the iron. I don't think I'd be able to avoid getting burnt fingertips.

They're just so small.

I've been muddling through and managing to get the pieces to come together so I think I'll just carry on.  -<

For those across the pond who might be thinking about joining in, A4 paper is approximately 8.5 x 11.5 inches.

@Iminei To make the quilt maths easier, could we say a maximum size of 12” on the longest side for non-fur baby quilts?
Title: Re: Mays Mini Marvels

@Sandra Oh my, those are seriously small! With those and the curtain alterations you are certainly working at both ends of the sewing spectrum.

I have ordered some fabric with the intention of entering as I now have curtains up in every room that currently needs them. Only re-modelled curtains from previous houses. Still have six hems to do but they can wait.

Here is a photo of one I am doing @Sandra i think it’s a bit bigger than yours but I do use glue, I am not too happy with this one as the fabric is very fine but it is for a purpose, I am trying to make something for a friend the fabric was given to me by her.

I find it difficult to loose the stitches successfully on this fabric

@Sandra  .... How about a teensy sq of HeatnBond lite ???
If you reiron the finished item the glue should easily release the papers ... Ask me how I know?

Thanks @Iminei for the idea  but I've got into a nice rhythm now by just stitching them and can shift quite a few in a session.

I still don't know how I'm going to put them all together in the end but I know I need more...lots more  :S ...white ones.

Well that determination eliminates my planned entry attempts. For quilt shows they count 12 up to 24 inches so long as it reads like a full size quilt. My 18 inch American Girl type doll is in need of a quilt but never mind. Not a fur baby and larger than desired otherwise.

My arthritis in my hands is progressing and says I can't work as small as is wanted for this. My eyes agree with the arthritis.  ;)

Many of these will now be two big but here are a bunch of free mini quilt patterns (https://www.allpeoplequilt.com/quilt-patterns/table-runners/free-patterns-mini-quilts) for your perusal.

Enjoy!

I understand there has to a a limit on 'mini' but surely, if people wish to do their own maths, it doesn't have to be 12" maximum  :[

Sorry don’t think I will be able to take part 12 inches is probably a bit too small for my eyesight at the moment.

I am getting new glasses, they are on order but probably won’t get them in time.  I tried to continue with my little epp as shown on my last post but really suffered  from not being able to see.

Maybe another time unless I can find a very simple way of doin this

I only suggested 12” as it was roughly the size specified in the miniature quilt category of the UK Festival of Quilt show and not everyone may be familiar with Iminei’s suggestion of A4 size.

@Iminei It looks as though my suggestion of 12” is going to limit participation - can we change this to a maximum size of 24” with no restriction on its intended use?

Don't worry, I have no intention of taking part in this, but I'm always interested in things others do, so reading through this thread.
I had to chuckle at the thought of a 24" quilt for a furbaby, given the size of my two woofbags

@Lilian you and others might find these useful. Patterns for 1" to 2" size half square triangles.  (https://www.generations-quilt-patterns.com/half-square-triangle-paper.html) You print it out, ideally on paper piecing paper. Or just use a shorter stitch length to help perforate the paper. Then you lay it on top of two layers of fabric, sew where indicated and cut. Lots of perfect uniform HST. BTW it says 1" makes. It's a typo, it makes 40.

There are lots of other versions, free or preprinted, in all sorts of sizes. Google is your friend. For ready made I highly recommend Thangles. They are great.

I can't stand doing paper piecing but love doing this for HST.

Thanks for that link @Renegade Sewist. I have lots of little triangles cut off as waste from the mystery quiltalongathon and am going to use those (better than chucking them away) I think there is enough for the Mini Make Quilt  :)

I have some printed pages for HSTs in a bigger size that I have used for FPP.

So am I @Celia  ... Lets go  with the Festival Of Quilts Rules ....

Miniature Quilts

Maximum size of 30cms on the longest side. Use any technique or combination of techniques. In a photo of the finished piece (with no indication of scale) the miniature should look like a full size quilt or wall hanging.

30 cms on this occasion = 12" (yes I know its actually 11.81 ")

I was making pretty good progress on my piece, and was following a nice tutorial- but you all know how there is a difference between "reading" and "understanding"? First I thought I needed 10 fabric strips and two small blocks. Nope, I need 10 different fabrics that make 8 strips and 2 sets of blocks. Okay, not a problem, I wasn't really liking two of them anyways.
Finish the block thinking this is going to be a close twelve inches, only to realize I need FOUR of those sets of 8 strips. Ooooooh okay okay okay!  I do not blame the tutorial I was following, it was clear.

That project is going into time out for a minute while I work on a different, more miniature mini.

I forgot that I had taken progress pics! I don't have a shot of the fabrics I picked or laid out bc I really was sorting through weird bags of scraps and strings and cutting as I went. I "cheated" and tried out that fusible Quilters Grid - I got a little remnant of it, very appropriate for a mini quilt challenge.

You can see the little squares have bits of a paper airplane, a decades old bit from a Tommy Hilfiger shirt, a "fair isle knitting" piece of a blue ornament, but the whole fabric was mostly white- and the edge of the framing, which was a single strip of a jelly roll cut down the center.
I went by the 1 inch squares of the Quilter's Grid and the patchwork is finishing at 1/2 inch. All quite fun! And I don't feel bad about cheating with pre-marked fusible grid. I still use tracing and scissors, like I did before I got a rotary cutter. and we're not all piecing by hand or stuffing our quilts with raw cotton and old cloth for batting  :D

Thats certainly not cheating @whofilets  ... thats using tools for the job ....

I think the only way you could cheat in this challenge is to use a printed fabric that looks like mini patchwork and sew along the lines! THAT would not be acceptable.

Very Very nice ... How big is it at the finish? Next layering, backing and binding!

May I offer a photograph - this is NOT an entry. I didn't make it, it was made by a lovely friend in Australia, as a bed quilt for a dolls house. It is all silk, and hand pieced.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I know it was meant to look like a full sized quilt would look, which is why I posted the first picture without scale. Now take a look at the ruler! It's amazing and I treasure it - it was made by Lutestring  <3

May Mini Marvel, complete!

It finished at 9.75 inches x 7.75 inches at its widest point. Much like a full size quilt made by me will probably be, it was a little wonky and uneven.
Both the light mint green and the navy binding were premade bias binding from my ancient stash of bindings and trims (I bought a small lot on eBay back in like 2012 and they look like they're mostly from the 60s-80s). The bias binding was a little hard to keep straight and only one corner successfully mitered front and back- it's so small you can't notice.

I was going for a blue and green diagonal, postage stamp quilt- ALMOST every square is from a different fabric. I love the tiny blocks taken out of context. Like the blue square at the top that looks like a white J- it's the bottom of an umbrella. Or a sparkly green bit- how would you know it's the green vest on a bulldog, from fabric with "dogs dressed in green for St Patrick's Day"?

here's a fun artsy shot taken on a bush near a carpark in Ely:

Entry 1/1 from Sandra.

Mini quilt made just because I needed to get it out of my system.

Decided to go the traditional route on the design and thought it would suit the Liberty fabric scraps.

I've finished.
Pleased to have got this out of my system. The hexies have been lying around for several years with the plan to make a mini quilt one day and now it's done.

I've got plenty of Liberty scraps to use which I thought would be the best option, being thin enough to wrap easily around these tiny hexies.

The plan became something like grandmother's flower garden.
I've got this little roll of Liberty bias binding to use to bind it with.
I have a sore middle finger from all the hand stitching.  :\ I found that if I wore my thimble, the thread was likely to shred more easily.

The finished size is roughly 7.5 x 6.5 ish inches.

Redrafted comment for entry submission: (sorry to everyone seeing this twice!)

Username and number: Whofilets , entry #1

What is it and for whom (if applicable): May Mini Marvel Quilt, for me

Pattern used (commercial or self-drafted, anything goes): self-drafted, used Quilters Grid interfacing. finished at 9.75 inches x 7.75 inches at its widest point

Fabrics used: scraps and offcuts, including fabrics upcycled from old clothing and old machine-made bias binding. Also part of one jelly roll strip cut in half. I did a little hand quilting around the edge and through the middle, though it didn’t need it.

A short description on how you made it, any problems overcome etc: This is my first ever, start-to-finish, top pieced and batting and quilted and binding put on, QUILT!

Lilian's entry #1

What is it and for whom (if applicable): A quilt for myself

Pattern used (commercial or self-drafted, anything goes): No pattern

Fabrics used:
Mosty batiks leftover triangles cut from making flying geese

A short description on how you made it, any problems overcome etc. :

I had a lot of HSTs left over from cutting all the flying geese to make the 5 Citrine Star blocks.  These would have been thrown away if I hadn't seen the May's Mini Marvels.  I had already started piecing them when I took this photo. This is the leftovers and the backing fabric.

I used 152 of these tiny corners and sewed them together diagonally to make 76 little 1½ inch squares which I then arranged in different ways.  I decided on this final arrangement.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

After sewing the squares together they each measure 1-inch square.  I used four 1½  inch squares for each corner.  I then layered the top and quilted it.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The backing was folded over to form the binding on the front attempting to mitre the corners.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Finished measurement is 10 ½ x 8 ½ inches.

Hope I have done it right this time  :|

@Lilian your little mini is so charming! and such a good use of what might have been seen as "waste." I like that you pressed the seams open, if I ever do something tiny like this again I will try that. mine was lumpy bumpy from overlapping seams.

Have just finished binding ( by hand , if you please) the first one. Will try to post pictures. Here we go. This is Catllar's first entry. It measure 8 x 11 and is a pattern from the tinterweb freebies.  It's all done by machine except the binding. Had a real fight with the mitres being so fiddly, so not my idea of fun but a lot of judicious pressing has evened out the worst of the sins. Not something I shall repeat. I seem not to have transferred all the prep photos I had. Pants!

The binding is a single bind  to reduce bulk and it's cut on the straight grain.  Quilting is simple cross hatch.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The second one is glaring at me from the ironing board daring me to unpick the pathetic quilting I've already done. I shall look at it again tomorrow. Did I say I hate quilting? think I must have mentioned it.

Fajita's beautiful mitres make me weep:  HOW do you do that???? My fingers aren't good with fiddly.

Late.
The thread inspired me to try something a bit more (too?) complicated and so last night I started to cut and chop.
First issue was drawing a template for my hexagons which took over an hour coz I kept ballzing it up. Then when cutting my very first piece, the ruler moved and the cutter did likewise. Off to a predictable start then
I've not a cat in hells chance of ever finishing this by the end of May, but it's something to do  :)
I've gotten this far...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I'll have to visit the shop where you lot bought your design, imagine and sewing skills sometime because they're seriously impressive. And I'm not someone who's easily impressed  :)

@Wayfarer, a bit more complicated doesn't begin to describe the fiddleyness of your shapes - good on you - go for it. !! Those shapes could perhaps be simpler to sew over papers and hand stitched together - rather you than me - just saying.

You know those days when you have a brilliant idea which then turns out to be not such a good idea which then morphs into a really bad idea which then makes you regret ever even having an inkling that the idea was a good idea?
That. In spades. No, not spades. Spades doesn't cover it. Bulldozer sized buckets.  :faints:

That was my entire first quilt project that ended up getting worse and worse and more complicated and bigger and then I trashed the worst of it and gave away the salvageable bits.

But you've already done a stunning quilt! YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS @Wayfarer !

Title: Re: Mays Mini Marvels
Post by: StitchinTime on May 27, 2021, 15:55:59 PM
@Wayfarer This may or may not be relevant as it depends on what the bulldozer has done/delivered, but have you looked at crazy quilts?
https://www.quilt-around-the-world.com/en/content/crazy-quilts-yesterday-today-and-tomorrow

The pieces in these are joined by visible decorative stitches - something which is much easier with an all singing, all dancing machine than doing it by hand.

My quilt is on hold for a while.
The auto cutter and stitching on my machine are being very temperamental so it's been put in the naughty corner till I can get a mechanic to look at it...hopefully on Wednesday.
That, the last few days here and the fact I'd run out of meds have had my depression return with a vengeance and I've lost the will to do much of anything.
On the upside, Pam's put in a request for a bed runner for her auntie and some cat leads.
My crappy singer is taking over minor sewing addiction till the brother is fixed. It doesn't even have a needle threader.  :scream:  :boohoo:  :faints:

@Wayfarer, hope you get your meds back and into your sewing mojo soon.

So here is Catllar's Second entry.  It measures 9 x 9. Each strip is 1/4" finished. Hand quilted ( after a fashion) bullseye design and  a kind of up and down thing on the border.   The fabric is mostly from a jelly roll that I cut down, apart from one piece of batik which I used as a strip and as the backing.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  I have learned form this experience that small and dainty is not for me but I have achieved 2 pieces so that's a good thing.  I'll put the other pix in separately I think.

StitchinTime’s First Entry

I saw this quilt (https://southerncharmquilts.com/blog/2020/03/18/the-rescue-quilts-11-the-navy-one-with-the-courthouse-steps-and-ohio-stars/) while meandering around the internet and realised I could make a smaller version using the Courthouse Steps and Ohio Star blocks from NightQuilter’s Sew Tiny Sampler (https://nightquilter.com/2019/03/01/sew-tiny-sampler-pattern-release/) FPP pattern. However, after making one 1¼” Ohio Star block making another 20 or so Ohio Stars was not an option and I switched to plan B and made a variety of Economy, Arkansas Star and Star blocks instead.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Using patterned fabrics for this size of block made it difficult to get colour balances correct – the fussy cut centres in the Economy blocks looked fine with the blue fabric when side by side, but when reduced to a ¼” border round a ½” square, some of the contrast between the two fabrics was lost. Quilting was by machine with a mixture of straight-line stitching-in-the-ditch or stitching around some of the stars.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The Sew Tiny Sampler pattern gave mixed messages regarding the size of the blocks and I thought the blocks finished at 1” not 1¼” so this finished larger than expected at ~9” square.

StitchinTime’s Second Entry

This was last minute make when I realised by my first mini quilt had come out larger than expected. I had a trial run Economy block left over from my first quilt and so I just added borders and cornerstones around this. The borders start at ¼” at the centre and gradually increase to ⅝” at the outer edge.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

It was machine quilted using stitch-in-the-ditch along the border seams with some zig-zag and trellis patterns to fill in the wider borders.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The finished size for this quilt is ~5” square.

Catllar's entry No.1. It measure 8 x 11 and is a pattern from the tinterweb freebies.

It's all done by machine except the binding. Had a real fight with the mitres being so fiddly, I think I overtrimmed the seam allowance, so not my idea of fun but a lot of judicious pressing has evened out the worst of the sins.

The binding is a single bind  to reduce bulk and it's cut on the straight grain.  Quilting is simple cross hatch.

It is made from scraps and will now go straight to the charity box as I have no use for this sort of thing. It was a challenge.

Catllar's entry no 2.  This is 9" finished. Each strip is 1/4" finished.

The fabric is cut down from a jelly roll apart from the batik which is used in one of the strips and the backing.

Quilted by hand in bullseye and in  freehand scallops on the border.

Didn't use a pattern, just a simple rail fence and played with the placements.  As there are so many seams I didn't bother with a sandwich layer, it is already thick enough.

It will make a mug rug. I shan't be doing the mini quilts again any time soon!

@StitchinTime you made some true marvels! I gasped aloud when I saw your tiny Ohio stars.

@Catllar what a cool rail fence! It reminds me of Gee's Bend quilts.
