Also known as Big Brother!

I wanted to make another memory quilt as the first one is just a row or two too narrow to properly cover a double bed when you are sleeping under it and because I had so much fun last time!

There were barely any shirts left after the first quilt and I had to be inventive to get enough 6" (finished) squares ... combining shirts, using shirt tails and cuffs and this as my biggest self-quilted project (73" x 80") so far was quilted in two parts without the aid of a Safety Net ... errrm... Sorry ...  Joining strip for the first time!!!

A couple of the points were a lil off on that middle join, mainly because of my inexperience and excess Spray Baste meant that the walking foot dragged a lil ...

What to do ... Unpick ??? Could be messy ...

Nah. I cut some teensy hearts from the remaining shirting and appliqued them on ... then sprinkled some more across the quilt to even them up! Lovely! There may be a tweak or two in the coming weeks but I think this is just about there and ready for its debut ...

and heres a family photo ...

I heartily recommend making a memory quilt; the cotton shirting has a gorgeous soft hue and feel and its incredibly cathartic and of course, extremely warm and useful.

Access All Accessories / Leaning toward the Lightside
« on: April 28, 2021, 09:05:18 AM »
So last week I started leaning ... or should that be lurching .. toward the Lightside.

Years ago I had some fabulous fishy fabric and I made Aprons for the women in my family at that time; if you were even distantly related to me you got an apron that Christmas ... Mil, Sil x2 and most importantly my Auntie Gell.

Now I dont know whether his lot used them or not ... I think one of the SIL did .... but I do know my Auntie Gell uses hers alllllllll the time and last time I spied it, it was looking distinctly worse for wear.

Years ago again I had bought some FAB Ikea fabric specifically for the making of more aprons, put it away and there it languished until earlier last week when the memory of AGells apron and a desire for a lil light relief from Quilting Quilting Quilting the AA steered me towards the almost Lightside area of making Aprons as gifts again ...

You wanted a pics, well here they are ....

THREE Finished (Yes @Lowena, Three count em and weep) and One that just needs the binding finished PLUS A Brucie Bonus (Drum Roll) of my very First Oven Glove.

Is that a banana in your Oven Glove or are you just pleased to see me (Sorry couldnt resist!!!)

I was going to make matching OG's for all the aprons but (thankfully) ran out of fabric ... so this Prototipo (as they say in Milan) is mine, alllllll mine (My Precious) !

2021 BOM Mystery Quiltalongathon / Block 3 - The CITRINE Star
« on: April 24, 2021, 12:56:03 PM »

Welcome to the
Third  Mystery Quiltalongathon Block for 2021 ...

This year, after the great success of last years QAYG BOM,
I decided to combine the BOM with a finished article,

A Mystery Quiltalongathon !!

A BOM with an agenda !!!

but here's a clue, I've called it
The Sparkling Stars Quilt

I thought as Stars are so often referred to as Diamonds
I would assign a different Gemstone to each Block.
and try and convey a sense of that jewel with my choice of fabrics .......

You can follow my choice of gemstone for each star ...
or choose your own according to the fabrics you have to hand

So for the THIRD BLOCK of
2021 Sparkling Stars Mystery Quiltalongathon

We have

The Citrine Star

Block FOUR will be released on Saturday 5th June ...

My, where has the year gone ?

*    *     *     *     *      *

There will be SIX Gemstone Blocks, posted at 6 weekly intervals
from the end of January to end of August,
giving you ample time to gather your fabrics and make your Stars!

You will need to make between FIVE and THREE Blocks for each Star.

The techniques used throughout the Sewalongs will be fairly simple
and there are Tut's available in The Darkside Tutorials should you need to refresh your memory.

This Mystery Quilt comprises a 5 by 5 grid of 12" (f) blocks
to make a finished quilt of 60" sq,
before any added borders or sashing.

You can of course make it smaller or even larger if you wish.

* * * Fabric Requirements * * *

This Mystery Quilt will require approximately 3m's of
ONE consistent background fabric throughout the quilt

and a different Gemstone colour each month ...
within which there will be between 3 - 6 different shades.

(I'm not so good at the Maths but a 1/4 metre or FQ of each gemstone colour/shade should be ample)

And everyone who finishes 2021 with a completed quilt
will receive an exclusive

The Sewing Places's
Prize Winners Enamel badge or Sew on Embroidered Patch!!!

Embroidery and Embellishment / My problem or Elvistoos
« on: March 24, 2021, 06:45:18 AM »
Hi peeps ... Can I just aska question ...

Yesterday Elvistoo was doing a big stitchout and I decided to add a bit of bling with some metallics ... f

The first thread I used was from my Madeira Treasure Chest ... so a 40 weight Rayon which says machine embroidery on it and was slightly rough?! ... and all went well with only 2 breaks  during a 20 minute stitch

The second thread I used was an Anchor  50 weight??  on which it says metallic but I cant find any other (legible) information ... This was a smooth thread and a complete nightmare!! The thread breaking almost from the get go, after the fourth or fifth break I gave up and reverted to the Madeira !

So WHY the difference ???

Was the Anchor not for machine embroidery ?? Ie the problem was mine, user error or ?????

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / A lil light relief
« on: March 20, 2021, 08:34:52 AM »
A few weeks ago I purchased this from a girl off faceache who makes things with flotsam and jetsom from the Northumberland coast .. I saw it and adored it, so bought it ... initially as a birthday gift for a friend but ... Nah! its not going anywhere .. I added the button windows (they were painted on) and it sits on the mantlepiece in the dining room.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

As my forays into the Darkside recently have revolved around quilting, not only quilting the enormous thing but the Advent Advent and now the other smaller and more time sensitive thing I decided a lil light relief from all the interminable quilting was in order....

So I thought I would try a lil applique ....
