Title: Making a shortform weblink
Post by: UttaRetch on March 01, 2017, 13:08:07 PM
I had a lot of problems with my first post because I couldn't work out to make a shortform url, so off I went to look it up and found this tute (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Url).

I don't even know what a shortform is!!!! :o

I read the title from reception and thought someone had posted in the wrong area with questions about a homemade dress-form for the vertically challenged !!!!

Can someone please explain how to do this in very simple terms for me? I don't get it  :S

I've discovered an even better way than my original post.  If you want to turn a weblink such as https://www.sewessential.co.uk/sewing-patterns into a weblink, simply highlight the link and copy, click on the world symbol next to the little picture, delete the what's already in the box and paste the link you previously highlighted and okay.  Your long link will become Sew essentials (https://www.sewessential.co.uk/sewing-patterns).

It's a very poor day that you don't learn something!!!  :toast:

This was a feature added a few months ago. Sorry we didn't announce, but that is why it's different than when the first post was made :) I knew some people were struggling with the manual way.

My short links take me to a virgin media search engine for whatever name I've changed it to  :S
Obviously doing something wrong here, even with simple instructions.

I do hope this is something I will be able to do without - it's gone way over my head I'm afraid!

Nope, followed the video (thanks @Francesca) but didn't work. Maybe it doesn't work on a smartphone?

Or I'm just stupid  0_0

In that case just type out as follows. Put the URL in the place where I've put www.bbc.co.uk and your text in "Link to the BBC".

Code: [Select]
Link to the BBC

Still can't get it to work, I dont think it's smartphone friendly

The hand-typed way is 100% smartphone friendly. The way shown using the link button (in the video) may not work on some devices. But the way I showed with the BBC link will 100% work.

It appears I've finally sussed this out on my laptop. Next to see if I can get it work on my phone....I'm halfway there!

Trim (https://www.fabricland.co.uk/product/ric-rac-trim-jumbo/)

I've done it! Well I made a meal out of that one didn't I?

The next exercise is to insert a picture.  Extra points will be awarded for size - not too small or too large.

Ah if you mean an inline pic I've already tried that one and couldn't get it to work on my phone.
Maybe I should do the same and try it on my laptop first. It was only by doing that of how I managed this in the end

I don't bother with 'attachments', but prefer to just insert an image using the picture tool icon.

Right I've found that o.k, how to you copy a pic to within the img brackets that come up?
Title: Re: Making a shortform weblink

A picture link ends with a .jpg, .png or .gif extension, for instance

https://d36ic34lpog4od.cloudfront.net/Sewing-Patterns/Cashmerette/Upton/upton8.jpg

and when using the 'insert image', becomes

It's a good idea to find a medium size picture to begin with, although I do use a third party site to resize.

O.k got that I think. Can you do the same with pics in your phone's gallery?
Title: Re: Making a shortform weblink
Post by: UttaRetch on April 10, 2018, 20:07:16 PM
No.  You have to upload the picture to a photo editing site so that you can create a link that ends in .jpg.  I use Lunapic (https://www140.lunapic.com/editor/) and import images from my computer.  Try Imgur (https://imgur.com/upload) for uploading from your mobile.  Bizarrely, you have to select 'Documents' when you click on 'Browse' and then look in either 'Images' or 'Gallery' to find the picture you want.
