Question:

If there is a design I like that comes in 11 1/2" x 6 3/4" would i be correct in saying I couldnt embroider it given as the two frames I have for Elvis are 4" x 4" and  7" x 5" (embroidery area) ????

Could I shrink it on the PES software or would that affect the stitch out ?
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Ohsewsimple on September 12, 2019, 10:30:54 AM
Yes you are correct you wouldn’t be able to sew it out.  Personally I wouldn’t try and shrink it as there’s too much of a difference in size.  The result wouldn’t be good.

Thank you OSS,

So thats why they offer the designs in different sizes ?? They alter the stitch density?

Are there bigger hoops for Elvis (750E)
Also are there magnetic clips for him ???

.. I understand this is how you can hoop quilts (?)

Brother 750E - I think the largest hoop made for your machine is a multi-position hoop (5x12) on sale here https://www.lordsewing.co.uk/130-x-300mm-x285-x-12inx29-ef60-nv750env1250-1855-p.asp (https://www.lordsewing.co.uk/130-x-300mm-x285-x-12inx29-ef60-nv750env1250-1855-p.asp)

For quilting I recommend very strongly that you get a DIME magnetic hoop. They are more expensive than ordinary hoops but worth every penny.
I think the DIME LM6 5x7 hoop is the one for your machine (check before you buy to confirm).

(by the way the 'monster' in Dime Monster Hoop is not about the size but the sturdiness and clamping ability of the hoop)

Michelle Schofield is the person to buy from in UK on this Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/2007158052947431/).
The group is not just for buying the hoops but offers support and advice as well.

Here are some videos to watch re how easy it is to quilt and embroider with them.  The demos are with the huge hoops for TOL machines, but the method is the same.

This video  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqZrd9VaNPs) from 22 minutes includes some practical tips for hooping and loading quilts

Well I've had a very enjoyable few hours with Elvis and learning so much more by doing ... and making mistakes.

He now displays the number of stitches to be stitched/ have been stitched in a design as a matter of course  and I've found out how to know where I've moved the design to in the hoop, so now note that down just in case I get a bobbin running out of thread again!

To be honest ... I'm loving this at the moment and today stitched out 2 quite stitch heavy designs ...
Yes, the top thread is still very present on the bottom, but the stitch on the top looks lovely (I think)
so what should I do ...???

I'll show you one of the design is stitched today.....

What a Shame!!!!

Ever extending my new interest I thought I would try Machine embroidery applique.

I found a pattern and pored over the destructions as Elvis chuntered away in the background ...
Did I mention that Im really really enjoying this now ... especially now Ive given up with worrying about the tension ... as the fronts look fine so ????

So last stitch of the day was to be a MEA leaf ... I found the destructions a lil confusing tho' ....

I printed out the applique pieces which I found printed very faintly ( problem their end not mine) so I went over the lines with black pen, cut the pieces out and was then told to glue them right side (printed) side down on the reverse of the fabric ... which I did and then promptly couldnt see the lines I had to cut along ...
The result was inaccurate cutting which after Elvis had done his stuff resulted in parts of the fabric not being caught by the embroidery! D'OH!!!!

So this mug rug is going to have to stay chez Imi I'm afraid ... I would also have like it to be a lil larger but this was the only size they had ...

QUESTION: I used a pritt-stick which was less than ideal to hold the fabric pieces in place ... Any other ways of doing this ?

QUESTION: Is there a way to avoid parts of the fabric not covering or extending beyond the stitched area??

QUESTION: If I enlarged it on the design screen, saved it to card ... would it stitch out the same or would the stitching be altered ie not as dense a zig zag ???

All advice, tips and tricks gratefully received

What design did you use @Iminei?  I’ve done several appliqué type pictures and I’ve never cut out the shapes before.  Generally when doing appliqué on an embroidery machine, there is a line of stitching laid down which shows you where to place the fabric.  You rough cut a piece to fit and lay it on top.  Hold in place while the machine then sews the outline of the design.  The excess fabric is cut away and then the final satin stitch or whatever is sewn.  No chance of fabric not being the right size, unless you have an accident.  :). Of course, I’m assuming you’re doing this on
Levi’s.

Is anyone answering my scaling up question ????
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Ohsewsimple on September 17, 2019, 10:46:29 AM
Ok design should be ok.  But I haven’t used one of theirs so not sure what method they give for appliqué.  Looking at the machine manual it suggests the way you did it.   It’s not a method I would choose.
As for the resizing.  I’m not sure you can do that in this machine.  Again, looking at the manual I can’t find anything about it.  It is a basic machine and things have moved on dramatically since then.  I take it you have no software?   I only ever do editing in software despite the fact that my machine can do all sorts of things.  If you could resize on the machine it would only be by a small amount anyway, about 20%.  And I don’t think it would recalculate density.
It’s a bit like pattern drafting for garments.  If you take a size 10 and just grade it up to a size 26, as is so often done, the result is very poor.  That is because everything is graded up and folds don’t necessarily need extra long legs, arms and a ver6 wide neck.  So best to start closer to your chosen size.   And that is the same with embroidery.  If you resize too far you get a very poor result.

@Ohsewsimple  ... I have the PES lite software (they call it plus but its v basic) and I can enlarge designs by pulling on the corners (if you know what I mean) and decrease that way to ...

I think theres also a resize button but Elvis is in his BB so Im not going to disturb him now ... hes had an exhausting week!
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Ohsewsimple on September 17, 2019, 21:25:32 PM
If you have the software then I’d use that.  It will maintain the stitch density.   Easiest at to check is pull the handles (corners) and watch the stitch numbers change on screen.
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Iminei on September 18, 2019, 08:48:23 AM
Stitch numbers ????

Where are they then ... Please remember Im very very stupid new at this

I've only just discovered how to get stitch numbers up on the machine itself and that was a fluke!

So this will be after Iv'e imported/opened the design within the PES stuff on my computer yes? then just send to card ? or do I have to save something first?
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.

@Iminei I’ve just managed to find the manual for PE design plus online.  I’ve used the full version before, old version, but not this one.  Soooooo....
Page 38 deals with scaling patterns.....resizing to you and me.  :)
Once you have the pattern/design on screen then you can use the handles to enlarge the design.
If you use the Ctrl key while dragging the handles the density should be maintained.
Note that you won’t be able to do this with all designs.  Some are locked and you can’t fiddle with them.
On page 61 it shows the pe plus window and details what is what.  Number 11 is the status bar.  At the bottom of the box.  This is where the number of stitches in the design should be found.
Hope this helps a bit.

EF85 Extra Large Embroidery Hoop 30cm x 13cm Overview
Large embroidery frame for stitching out large embroidery designs in just one hooping. 300mm x 130mm (12" X 5")

Would this fit Elvis ???

So if I wanted to buy this design  (https://www.urbanthreads.com/products.aspx?ProductID=UT21205)for Elvis

as I have a 5 x 7 " max embroidery size hoop do I have to buy the size that fits into there or can I buy the larger one and resize the design on my computer ??? which will then be more useful if I get a larger hoop.

Sorry If you experts have already replied but Im trying to get my head round this.
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Ohsewsimple on September 21, 2019, 12:45:03 PM
Hi @Iminei.  Well there is a hoop that will fit your machine.  Not sure if it’s a BF85 or BF60 as Lords has it.  So, yes it enables you to do larger designs. HOWEVER, something some people can get their head round is the fact that whatever size hoop you use, your machine will still only sew a design 5x7 in one go.  That is the size of the embroidery area and that is governed by the size of the embroidery arm on the machine.   I’m sure you’ve seen the really big ones.  And they do need lots of room.  So if you had a design of a car and it was 5x9 then using this hoop wouldn’t help unless you could split the design up into separate areas.  (Splitting designs is time consuming and not really for beginners.)  If you had a design with the same overall size of 5x9 but it consisted of three balloons and each fitted in to the individual sewing areas of the hoop, then yes these hoops are great.   Of course, with designs like this, made up of several different elements it’s relatively easy to move pieces around to suit your frame.
I’m sure that’s all as clear as mud!    :(
Looking at the design you have chosen,  it would need to be split as the tree trunk runs from the bottom to the top of the design.   It would still need to be restricted to the width of your hoop 5”.
Am I sensing we need a bigger machine already? :)
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Iminei on September 22, 2019, 09:13:20 AM
I never knew that!

To recap my machine will only sew a maximum design of 5 x 7" ... because that is the total area that the mechanical bits can move the hooped fabric around ??/

So if I bought the multi positioned hoop that Ive seen .. which has two sets of fixings on it ???? Would I be able to sew a bigger design ... or does the design have to be broken in two ?

Ive never seen that option when looking at designs to buy ... just single sizes ?!?

The design has to be made as a split design for that hoop.  I'm not sure if your software gives you the option of making split hoop designs or not as I have pe10.  I used mine once on my old machine when I had to do a big name. From what I can remember you can't just split a design down the middle to make it fit it has to be done so that you have a complete section of the design in each section. You sew one bit and then take hoop off and move it and then stich the neXT part of the design each section has to be saved as a separate design file. I amy not have explained that very well but there should be some videos on YouTube which will help.

Can you buy designs that are split ???

@Iminei I’ve only just seen your post from the other day.
Yes basically the size of the sewing area governs the size of the embroidery design.  Otherwise there would be no point in the companies making machines with larger embroidery arms and areas!   :)
You can sew larger designs but they must be split.  I have done it in the past and find it a bit of a faff.  There are several different ways to split a design and one method will work better than another depending on the design you are using.  There are softwares oh there that say they easily split the design.  However from experience they tend to just cut the design on a straight line.  Easy yes!   However when the design is sewn back together, so to speak, a line is quite visible where the break was.  To get this line some stitches will be shortened to fit.  It’s not a good look.
But I had a look at these.  Was surprised to find them.

One of those (the tree ) is why Ive been asking these questions ...

when they then ask you to choose a size ... Is this is the size for each portion of the design ? or the total design ???

and would I still have to have the multi position hoop to stitch these ?? the long one with two sets of attaching thingmys
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Ohsewsimple on September 29, 2019, 18:31:42 PM
You could only do the middle  or bottom ones as the other will be too wide.  The multi position hoops works lengthwise, or width wise if you rotate the design.  But they still do a 5” width.

Still very confused ...

as to why many many sizes of designs are just over the 5" and 7" ...  when standard hoop sizes are 4" sq and 5 x 7" .

I realise there are bigger area machines around but there must be a lot of peeps with the normal machines (Or am I being incredibly naive?)

So If I wanted the Hawk .. (which I dont particularly but it might be nice in a variegated)

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I would have to choose the second smallest 4.41 x 6.85  for my 5 x 7 stitch area ?

Is that the total size of the whole hawk or the size of each individual part?

Would I be able to stitch a larger size out if I had the multi hoop?

Sorry to be so thick!

Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Ohsewsimple on September 30, 2019, 14:33:57 PM
Hi @Iminei.  Oh no my dear you aren’t thick at all.  You’re a beginner and it can be very confusing. When I started embroidering there were fewer machines, hoop sizes and more simple embroidery designs.  I just had to deal with a very confusing array of software.

So the hawk design is split and you are right about the size you would need.  That way it would fit into your 5x7 sewing area.  The size quoted is for the largest piece and I think that is probably the body.  If you bought a bigger size, then the individual pieces would not fit your sewing area.  You need to think of this as 3 separate embroideries which when out together create a large picture.  If you click on the View instructions underneath the design you will see how it is done.  This involves taking the fabric out of the hoop and re hooping to get the fabric in the right position for the next embroidery which will join the previous one .....if it’s been lined up properly of course.  :)
The Build a Wreath design is another one that would need re hooping to give you a large design.  Clever designs I think.

As regards the tree design, I am assuming the size quoted is for the entire design but it would be worth checking first with the company.

How on earth could you rehoop the fabric and get the design right ????  :S

Post by: Acorn on September 30, 2019, 15:30:24 PM
I have that tree design in the smallest size, and I can confirm that the size refers to the overall tree with one set of leaves in place, as in the top part of the picture.  The individual leaves below are also supplied with the pattern, to be added separately.

I haven't actually stitched it myself, but you would have to rehoop the fabric so that the sewing area was where you wanted the next leaf to be, and then tweak it when in place (my machine lets you move up and down and rotate the design).

Urban Threads has a tutorial for using their split designs (https://www.urbanthreads.com/tutorials.aspx?t=Stitching+Split+Designs) that shows you how to do it using templates.

I believe that some split designs - where the positioning of the next part has to be precise - have a temporary finishing stitch for the first part and starting stitch for the second part which you line up, and remove when you've finished.  I may be wrong about this though, because I don't think I've used one like that!

Do split designs usually have the templates for each stage included???

No - you have to print out the design itself from an embroidery design program - even the most basic, free program will let you do this.

Open the embroidery file (the one ending in .pes for Brother machines, I think) in the program.  Click on 'File' at the top left and choose 'print' from the menu (or 'print preview' if there is one and you want to check it out first).

Certainly the hawk design has what they call alignment stitches.  They are stitched T the end of one part of the design. Then the fabric is moved in the hoop to the correct position for the next part.  The tutorial for the hawk seems quite good.  Before the next part of the design is stitched, the alignment stitches are stitched.  They usually have to stitch exactly over the top of the last lot.  That way you know the design will line up properly.   As Acorn says, you would probably have to tweak the position slightly.  When I’ve split and sewn designs I used small crosses as alignment markings.  That way you know it lines up vertically and horizontally.

@Iminei you are more than welcome to come over if you’d like to.  I know it’s really confusing reading it all because it’s all new terminology.   So much easier to see in action.
Using the multi position hoop for designs is quite different to designs which need multi hoopings.

With regards to the quilt.  It’s not something I do.  My first thought was sticky stabiliser as I would be wary of hooping it if it was thick.  But sticky means hooping the stabiliser and then sticking the quilt on top so I’m wondering if the top of the quilt would be too loose and move.

(I know, I know I have done this with The Village but for the life of me I cant remember what I did ... Dementia anyone?)

I have a Janome 11000 SE so it may be different for your 'Brother', but I have a specific hoop for quilted items - there is no inner hoop which holds the fabric in the outer hoop which attaches to the machine, but rather magnetic clips which tension the fabric layers onto the outer hoop. This needs no stabiliser and doesn't put any strain on the standard hoops

If its already layered and quilted you shouldn't need any stabaliser. When I did the quilting on my quilt top I just hooped it straight into my hoop. If you are not sure try just layering some fabric so if same thickness and have a go on that first. Ive got quite a few odd bits of different pieces I have had a go on first before I done it on the good piece.

Okay @Acorn  @Ohsewsimple  @Morgan  @Celia @Peeps .....  another SOS

Im trying to stitch a label for the Mystery quilt;

Ive typed out what I want on the computer (Brother PES) saved it to the card, taken the card to Elvis, put it in the slot but every time I try and select the saved label onto Elvis's screen it says

This embroidery card cannot be used on this machine

I mean WTF????

So maybe the design is too big ??

So I select a (bought) design for one of the coaster/mug-rats I made, save it to the card and insert it into Elvis (oh Errr Missus!) select the design and we're good to go ...

So WHAT is happening here????

Help please I really want to get this quilt finished!

Is the card too big? Is it the wrong format? I'm no expert but my Pfaff won't take a memory stick bigger than (from memory) 500Mb and it has to be formatted to FAT 32 (I might be wrong but something like that). Tech in the machines is way behind tech for laptops/ tablets etc band & it's now difficult to get memory sticks as small now that we're buying 128Gb ones. Just re-read & your card is ok with a different design on. Try a different font & see if that works.

Right, Elvis is now stitching away ...

I had included the dates in a different sized font *** on the same line (as it were) as some text and I dont think the computer liked it ... so it said No!

I removed this and we're good to go !

I plan on adding the dates as a second fix, without unhooping the label ...

We'll see if it works ... at the moment I think the label is going to be too big so may have to redo in a smaller font (I wish there was a way of knowing how big letters would be and yes, I know there is a size guide on screen but it never really correlates to how it stitches out.)

I will be back to show you my efforts later ...

Q: WHY would this *** affect the card/computer ???
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.

Was the finished design too big for the selected hoop?   It only has to be slightly too big and it won’t work.

Post by: Iminei on October 08, 2019, 23:04:53 PM
Yup! Just outside its parameters apparently !!!

I've modified it and tho' its not as nice and precise as I wanted its stitched, installed and a go!

Ansd I suppose this is the way to learn about Elvis

What is interesting tho' is the error message ... as there is another EM that states 'the design is too big for the hoop'

but I got the other one !?!

Mmm. Presumably the error message is coming up on the embroidery machine?   Seems weird.  It’s a long time since I used a card so trying to dig deep into my memory banks.  Sometimes switching off and on again clears those weird things.  We occasionally had some strange things like that happen at work that we couldn’t account for.

On a slightly different note, a little warning, @Iminei , if you do a design (such as free standing lace, FSL) which is all white, and you have a white background on your embroidery machine screen... guess what?  You won't be able to see the design!  Took me a little while to work this one out  :S :o

I’m lucky I can change the background colour on my machine.  Otherwise just changing the thread colour works.  Of course not all embroidery machines are in colour anyway.  I believe the Brother 750e would just show a black image for the design.

Is Elvis still too tense ???

@Ohsewsimple @Celia @Acorn @Bodgeitandscarper @anyone else who knows anything about embroidery machines

Ive had a play ....

.... after visiting my longarmer, who also sells and services Brother machines, who said that the tension should be set at 4 on the Brother machines and seeing my tension was set at 00 (and not being able to find anything in his manual that said what the tension should be set at) I decided to try a few alternative settings

I chose the letter H for the first try at 4 (which was recommended) and stopped after Elvis had stitched an I .. which is why the stitch unravelled slightly afterwards.
From then on I chose an I for the letter

Ive written the tension setting by the letter and stitched the letter at 00, 4, 5, 6, 7 and the maximum 8.

@Iminei none of them look right to me.  Don’t know if I’ve asked before but which bobbin thread are you using!   Should be the green reel of Brother bobbin thread.  It would appear that your top tension should be set at 00 which I find odd but that’s what Brother say.  Even on the highest setting it isn’t right and shouldn’t be up there anyway.  Have you fiddled with the bobbin tension at all?

The edges of those letters don't look very "crisp", but that may just be the font itself?

Good evidence that your top tension unit is working.

If you can, reset everything to 'default' or factory settings.
Make a note of what the top tension setting is when on factory default.

Next steps -

First take off the cover for the top tension unit and check & clean  as per these instructions from Lords (http://www.lordsewing.co.uk/blog/2014/07/31/know-your-thread-tension/) -

Second - Adjust the tension clip screw on the bobbin case until the stitchout on the back looks like your stitchout +8 but with a little bit more bobbin thread showing.
The article in the link by Lords takes you through what to do, how to set up the test and how to alter that bobbin tension.  It also shows you the picture of what the underside of a Block Capital A should look like when the tension is correct - Link to Bobbin tension setting pdf (http://s104771590.websitehome.co.uk/catalog/media/Blog/Correct%20Bobbin%20Tension%20for%20Embroidery.pdf)

The longarmer you talked to is partly correct. On my machines the embroidery tension on the settings screen is set at 00 but when you then load up your design and it goes to the embroidery screen the default tension is set at 4 and this is the one you alter.  If your bobbin case has the screw sealed you do not adjust it as it is set for you to use.  The only case you can adjust the tension on is the one which usually has a blue dot in the bottom of it.

For Vege's daughter's upcoming birthday ... do you think she will like it?

It stitched beautifully (at +8) and there was even white bobbin thread showing on the back!

(Have I got the commas right there?? The Daughter of Vege, the birthday of the daughter ???  :S)

Has anyone got a fool proof way of lining up letters to form a word??

It will require multiple hoopings so must be fairly easy for an idiot me to do ...

Obviously depends how big you want the text.   But use the software as much as you can for  customising and editing.  So much easier.

Right Im off to Franklins with Puzzler on Saturday so I need some DEFINITIVE answers ...

What SIZE of design can I achieve with the Brother Multi Position Hoop??
Is this the right one ??? (https://www.lordsewing.co.uk/130-x-300mm-x285-x-12inx29-ef60-nv750env1250-1855-p.asp)

Do I have to BUY already Split designs ???

Or is there some technowhizzery I have to do to the design on my computer/machine to split the design???

Machine Brother 750E
Max Hoop/embroidery size 7" x 5"

Still Confused on how to line up lettering to spell words with multi hoopings.

By the way did you know that you can get a sprung loaded hoop - I think mine are by Madeira and come in two sizes so if you need to reposition you just press the two butterfly clips together and move the fabric a little and let go - this is all done whilst the fabric is under the needle.

@Elnnina wrote this the other day and I have no idea what it means but thought it might be relevant????  :[

To answer your questions about the Madeira Spring loaded embroidery hoop, have a look on Google and Amazon.  It is a very shallow hoop the outer is plastic and the inner ring which is the spring loaded part is in metal.

Using wooden hoops and if you want to reposition your fabric you have to take it out from the machine and undo the fastening and then reposition the fabric and tighten it up again.  With the spring loaded hoop you simply leave the hoop in place on the machine and under the needle and  pinch the two metal butterfly type parts and this releases the inner ring and you can just reposition the fabric quite easily - particularly useful if you want to cover a bigger area - when I was playing with machine embroidery a long time ago using this Madeira hoop was so much easier and is so much flatter than the wooden hoops.

no the sprint loaded hoops that @Elnnina talks about is for free machine embroidery and not relevant here.
sorry I haven't got round to replying @Iminei, busy morning.
I would suggest you ask for a demo of the hoop at Franklins.  but you've probably been and gone by now.
no you don't have too buy split designs.  but designs larger than your embroidery area, 7x5 , will need to be split to enable to be used in the multi position hoop.  thew software you have  will not split it for you as it is basic software.

Duh.....read what is written! 0_0.  Sorry obviously not with it!  so that's good then.
The owls design..... you can do the smaller two sizes.  The others will have to be split because they are too big for your embroidery area.   it is the embroidery area rather than the hoop itself that governs the size of designs you can sew in one go.  Splitting this design would probably be easy, if you had the right software, because you could possibly  cut off one owl and part of the branch.  Without seeing how hot is set up it's difficult to say for definite.  but you can see how some designs are easier than others.  This has 3 separate owls and therefore you probably wouldn't be chopping through the middle of an owl.
The other design we've discussed before.  You can do the two smaller ones but not the larger one without having it split again as far as I can make out.  Without seeing thew actual design file it's difficult to say.  I am assuming the design size is for the leaves as well.  But this is a funny one where you do as you like with all the separate elements......leaves!
if you want to look at anything in Franklins, it's a good ideas to give them a ring before you go to give them a heads up so they're expecting you.

Yes, Im aware of the price (more than I've ever spent on a car!!!)

But I dont understand about the upgrade kit or why I would need the PES software ...

Surely I could use the PES stuff I have now ???

Is that right?
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Bodgeitandscarper on November 08, 2019, 09:36:07 AM
The upgrade kit upgrades the machine's software so that you can use the 8" x 12" (300mm x 200mm) hoop included in the kit.  The machine itself has the biggest hoop as 300mm x 180mm, so it gives you a bit wider hoop with the upgrade.  And the upgrade kit is FREE with their offer  0_0  If you do buy from them, ask if they will install the software upgrade on the machine for you.  (It's perfectly do-able yourself, you just have to follow the step-by-step instructions very carefully.)

Which PES software do you have?  They all work for all Brother machines, so if you're happy with what you have, then no need for a new one, but have a look at what they can do in case it's more than yours - they are very good prices when bought with a machine!

And yes, the prices are eye-watering!  What I don't get is that I've seen some people on facebook groups who have TWO of the top of the range machines, so about £12,000 worth  :o :o :o

I have the PES Plus (ie Lite!) but I can make labels with it and open bought designs with it ...
The included designs are all a bit Twee for my taste and Gawd knows why they are so fixated on Disney.

Also dont know if the designs are really so good ... the first one I tried of the frog was misaligned, I havent really tried any of the included pictorial designs since then.

So what are you saying Bodge about the embroidery area???

If I understand it correctly the MAXIMUM stitch area for Elvis (750E) is 5" x 7"  .....
that is the absolute biggest I can go without a multi positionable hoop and splitting designs.

The 800E has a bigger touch screen which is in colour but the same stitch area ???

And the V3 ???/
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Bodgeitandscarper on November 08, 2019, 10:03:20 AM
The V3 has a maximum stitch area of 7" x 12", or 8" x 12" with the (currently free from Franklins) upgrade kit 1.  Doesn't sound a lot different, but actually 8 x 12 is huge.
I wish you live nearer me, you could have come and had a play with mine.

I don't know much about the software, but I would have thought what you've got is fine.

So with the (currently free) upgrade you gain an extra inch in width ??? But you have to install the upgrade ...

Do you need to buy a bigger hoop, or is the 8 x 12 hoop supplied with ?

how does the upgrade work?
Does it fool the machine into thinking its bigger than it is (like a man after 4 pints on a friday night)

I suppose most embroidery is for children, hence Disney, especially if you're selling ( other than EWM

The upgrade includes the 8 x 12 hoop, and an 8 x 8 hoop.  And it makes the machine embroider up to 8" wide.  Why it isn't just sold with that ability I don't know.

The upgrade kit comes with the hoops.  I think the reason it isn’t just sold like that is because the machine has been around for a while and the upgrade just means you have an option.  If they made the machine with the upgrade the machine would be more expensive.
@Iminei the 8x12 would be the embroidery area, so a big increase on what you have.  The owl design wouldn’t need to be split!
You are definitely not allowed to sell Disney embroidered stuff but that goes for a lot of copyrighted and licensed designs.   Brother made a few Laura Ashley machines after the license with Disney expired.  But they weren’t so popular.  Many people that buy these machines do so because of their grandchildren.

Im torn .... Elvis is fine (apart from the Tension issue ... but it doesnt seem to affect the look of the embroidery (that I can see) ... just the amount of top thread I perceive he is using)

But ... Why shouldnt I have something new to me and bloody expensive?

HWMNBN is spending oodles on himself ... make up, clothes, shoes, haircuts, beauty treatments (botax** seriously) Prancing around the country visiting all his 'friends', going out to shows, clubs and do's ...

So to (try and) rationalize ...

I have never had a new to me anything
My marriage ended this year
My looks have gone
My body is going gone to pot (I blame Cornish Yarg!)
There's never going to be anyone interested in me ever again
I have no money of my own
I have no prospects of getting a job
Hes living the life he wants
Going out with all his lovely friends
I stay in all the time (money, not being able to drive after dark, being a single female)
I'm jealous and depressed
I had one birthday present this year (from the lovely Puzzler, thank you Hon xxx)
I'm not expecting anything for Christmas this year
(Husband 0, family 0 ... Some Friends yes, but I wouldnt expect anything from them)

CAN I justify this ???? Nah!

** Not a typo, that what we used to call it after my Auntie Gell told us she was having Botax one year

@Iminei , just to play Devil's advocate, but I don't think that Elvis has 'tension issues'. I don't have a Brother machine but the instruction books that accompany my Janome 11000 and the software package both show examples of 'correct tension' that very closely resemble what Elvis produces.

You could always take an example of his output with you when you visit Franklins to see what they think...

Go for it @Iminei if you really want it and feel you will get good use out of it, sometimes we do need to treat ourselves.

BUT as for the other rubbish you talk, you have just lost your confidence and are spending too much time on your own. I know when you have been with someone for a long time it’s difficult to even know what you want to do.

I think you have helped me to get back into my embroidery machine, I have just made a design for Christmas drinks mats, hopefully I will try sewing it out tomorrow. This is from someone who doesn’t do Christmas.

Can’t wait to hear wether you have bought a new machine, have fun tomorrow

Yes!! its a gadget @Deafoldbat @Lowena  ... I have suffered from Psoriatic Arthritis through my life consequently, on a good day, I have little or no strength in my hands ... and I find the worst bit of playing with Elvis is the hooping!

I really struggle to tighten the screw. I have recently being using a screw driver but it inevitably slips out of the notch and cuts me and will, if I continue to use it, no doubt chew up the screw ....

I mentioned this to the chap who was taking me through ElvisToos features and he whipped out one of these!
There's a screwdriver in there, the blue bit is a non slip easy grip sleeve, and the white bit fits around the screw, so no slipping out of the notch and tearing my hand open !

Deep Joy! Bliss! Heaven! Easy Peasy, Squeeze the lemons, Chill! ...

Now I know its a simple bimple idea but I do not begrudge them my tenner if it makes hooping less of a nightmare.

Oooh, love that border hoop - but £190, eeek!  :o :o :o

Not sure I'd use it really anyway, no, I wouldn't, of course I wouldn't.  Would I?

And that screwdriver looks a really nifty little gadget, that I could afford, I find screwing hard work sometimes - screwing the hoops tight, that is  0_0 :P

I have one of those for my Hus Diamond somewhere in my large box of stuff.  Not used it yet.
I think I have a hoop for every size and type I might need.  Reason being when we closed the shop and I retired earlier this year I 'acquired ' my boss' Diamond.  It was too big for the canal boat they now live on.  And of course she had every hoop, gadget and feet you could probably think of.  Along with dozens of bobbins.  I just need a very large drawer to keep it all in.   :)

QUESTION

I have been playing with Elvistoo (oooh er Missus) and have finally come up with a design from the on board files.

Everything is set and I've hooped up and am raring to go but when I press EMBROIDERY which I understand is the thing to do after you have finished editing ....  a message flicks up with a sad smiley saying  THIS EMBROIDERY FRAME CANNOT BE USED

Ive attached the biggest hoop I have (measures 10.5 x 13.5 inches to outside of frame)

Design says it measures 255.8 mmm x 85.5 mm

I think thats about 8 .75 x 3.25 inches

SO WHAT  am i doing wrong/have I failed to do ????  :'(

Additional Question
can I edit the measurements to inches somewhere?

Have you told it what size hoop you're using? My Pfaff defaults to the small hoop unless the design is very large, I have to select hoop size from a drop down.
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Iminei on November 24, 2019, 12:42:47 PM
The only hoop not grayed out when the design is displayed is the largest which is what I have hooped up ...

But I removed that hoop and put in the absolutely ginormous one that came with the upgrade pack and it came up with the same message!

I checked in settings and the hoop selected was the biggest ... I selected a smaller hoop and went back to the design and it showed the hoop outline on screen cutting through the design ... so I know the largest hoop had been selected before.

At least I have managed to save the design in Elvis's memory .. tho' I think that was a bit of a fluke.

Getting fed up now as I worked on this all morning.

Do you have to tell the machine which hoops you own?  I had to do that with mine (which is a Husqvarna, not a Brother, so this may be irrelevant.)

Have you found the manual online and downloaded it so that you can search it quickly rather than ploughing through the paper one?

@Iminei You won't be able to use the hoops from the upgrade pack until you install the upgrade software.  Give me a few minutes to think about the problem (just having lunch!) then I'll be back  :P

Choose a simple design to start  not a big one.  Use the hoops that come with the machine and not the upgrade.  Just get used to using it.

Another little tip, either label or use a permanent marker to put the size on each hoop in inches, you'll know exactly what you have then.

To get the size of a hoop, use the plastic grid thingy that comes with each one, the squares show the actual embroiderable area, which is what you need to know.

Oh, and having measured the outside of my 7" x 12" (largest that can be used without the upgrade) it's not anywhere near 10.5 x 13.5", so I think you are trying to use the upgrade hoops without having installed the software for them?

I realised I couldnt use the hoops until the upgrade.

So I chose another design, The Holly Wreath, straight off the book, no fiddling no faffing and much much smaller than the hoop size and I get the same message !

Sorry if it appears Im moaning about this, especially as it cost so much, you'd think I'd be happy but its incredibly frustrating and taken the shine right off my big present.

Get all your hoops out, check their size by using the plastic grid inserts, and get 'em labelled!  It drove me a bit (more?) doolally trying to guess which one was what size!

Go on, try a smaller hoop  0_0

I think it is the problem, it's the width!!!!  The machine will only use a hoop up to 7" wide without the upgrade.  That looks like and 8" x 8" you have hooped up.

Try either the hoop at the top of your pic, or the little one, trust me, they will work.

Oooh, super!
As for the back, my theory is if the front is ok, then that's fine!  Some designs will show a lot of the top thread on the back anyway, so I wouldn't worry.

You did say the bobbin you wound felt a bit "soft", so perhaps try some pre-wound bobbins?  I get mine from embroideredjust4u (https://www.embroideredjust4u.co.uk/ourshop/prod_3622141-12-PREWOUND-SIZE-A-BOBBINS-IN-BLACK.html)

That's gorgeous,  If the front looks spot on and its not puckering the fabric at all then I wouldn't worry about the back.  (And it's not often I don't worry about the back)

The embroidery looks great and I agree the back of machine embroidery on most machines is not very consistent especially on tight curves, narrow pieces when you have lots of colour changes.
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Ohsewsimple on November 25, 2019, 10:47:14 AM
Could be the bobbin if it’s not wound properly.  Or could be the threading.  What top thread are you using?  And I assume you’re using the correct bobbin thread.  Doubtful the machine tension is faulty.  I’ve never known a new Brother have a problem.

Bobbin felt a bit soft too me but what do I know?

Im going to the shop this week so will pick up some prewound, and maybe take whats left on the bobbin and ask if its wound right ...

It has puckered a bit, round the bluebird and orange bird mainly.

more play today.
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Ohsewsimple on November 25, 2019, 14:37:32 PM
The puckering will probably be the wrong stabiliser for the design or bad hooping.   :)
Bobbin shouldn’t be soft really.  Should be even all across too.

I tend to use stitch and tear type stabiliser on designs that aren’t too dense.  For dense designs I like to use a cut away.  It supports the higher stitch count better.
Some stitch and tear, as all stabilisers actually, are better than others.  I find many stitch and tears are patchy in their make up.  When you look at them they have areas that aren’t as thick as others.  And so some parts of an embroidery aren’t so well supported as others.
Lords Sewing used to do a cd or dvd with loads of info about various stabilisers.  Not sure if they still do it.  Might be worth ringing them.

Glad you are enjoying your new Elvis.  Like  your designs as long as the front is right I wouldn't worry too much about the back  it as it's never anywhere as good as the front. If you are getting a bit of puckering you could try using some spray starch on your fabric. I mainly use cutaway stabaliser as I have a habit of tearing the tearaway when I hoop it as I'm a bit cack handed at times. Embroidered just for U do a sample pack of different types you can have a play with. You can also loosen the tension off a bit.

Oh I like that @Bodgeitandscarper but can see the drawback if you keep buying hoops.  :)
I have just sorted out a big drawer in one of my chests and put most of the hoops and all my feet and accessories in there.  Hoops that were too large like the 200x360 hang on a couple of large Command hooks on the wall.  And the Majestic Hoop which is 360x350 is in its box and sits on the floor tucked away with the big clear extension table as they won’t fit anywhere!

I'm a bit rubbish with stabiliser, but I would suggest that it depends on what fabric you're embroidering on, and, as it's a lot of stitches, a heavy stabiliser, or even two layers?

I'm sure the more knowledgeable peeps will be along soon to put me right  0_0

PS I nearly bought that design this morning...  0_0

Lovely design, I looked at that this morning but decided I don't have anywhere to use it. I've tried a variety of stabilisers but find the best is Janome iron on, tear off. For a dense design like this I'd use 2 layers. I've bought cheap stabilisers but they're not as good as the branded Janome. I buy a roll of the width that fits my biggest hoop. When I end up with biggish bits left over I stitch them together with bobbinfill, the resulting composite works ok for light stitched designs or for small designs that can be stitched without going over the 2 layer joins. (Sometimes embroidery works ok over the joins, sometimes not - so I don't use for anything important)

What fabric are you using it on?  Over 60,000 stitches I’d definitely be looking at a cut away.  You might need to add a lighter one as well, such as a stitch and tear or a light iron on.
Lovely design.

When I make my embroidered coasters I have the bump underneath, stabilizer on top, then the fabric, a fairly open linen type, and then the soluble on top to prevent the stitches sinking in to the fabric.

The soluble never lies totally flat, always has some wrinkles in it. I cant pull it once hooped as it tears ...but this doesnt seem to affect the stitchout.... Is this normal?

After embroidering I tear the majority of the soluble away and then rinse/dip the embroidery, which is just fabric, yet to be finished, into water to get rid of the remains of the soluble but the fabric feels hard after this

Am I getting rid of the stabilser correctly?
Is there a better way of doing this?
Should the fabric feel different after using soluble?

I think you need to rinse the stabiliser out more thoroughly - it shouldn't leave any residue at all.

Are you using the plastic-y soluble stabiliser, or the one that feels as though it's woven?  If it's the plastic-y one you'll probably find the other one will behave better and is unlikely to tear.

I have no idea, they came from @Celia  ..

Do you think I can assemble my coasters til finished and then wash them???

Absolutely.

If you have the plastic-y stabiliser you'll know - it's a bit like thick, opaque clingfilm!

Post by: Nuttywife59 on December 05, 2019, 17:00:34 PM
You don't need to hoop the washable topping you can just lay it on the top and hold it in place. Make sure you are using the very thin one feels like cling film.  When you've finished pull off all you can and  just go gently over what's left with damp cotton bud.  You can use  clear vynyl as stabaliser for coasters then gentle tear it off when you've finished and it will not show.

Then I think giving them a rinse and spin in the machine after theyre finished might be the way to go!

No its not very opaque at all ... looking at it, its got tiny lines on/in it and it feels rough.

Sorry wasn’t around earlier yes it is the plastic one but the very lightweight one, similar to the Avalon
You used to buy in a packet but this was on a roll.  @Iminei I think I did send you a bit of the papery water soluble if not I will look and see if I have any left.

I haven’t been around much as “him in doors”  has spent the last 6 weeks in and out of hospital for tests and ops but I do need to look for my Christmas fabrics before it is new year!!! So hopefully this weekend I will see what I can find.

Do you need the wss on the top?  I generally only use it if the fabric has a pile to stop the embroidery sinking into the pile.

I also have a pack of Avalon that you so kindly gave me when I picked up my box of dreams ... sorry ... threads.

So what are we saying, which one is good?

I need the soluble on top as the fabric has a slightly more open weave than a plain cotton and I found when I embroidered the label for Kenoras cushion in a swap that the threads sort of disappeared a bit.

That sounds good to me, I wasn’t sure if I gave you the Avalon pack or not, that is my favourite for on the top of difficult fabrics.
I do use the more material type of water soluble but not usually as a topper, love it for free standing lace.

I used Avalon soluable on my daughter's wedding veil - this was a very last minute request as originally she was not going to have a veil.  I bought some tulle and scalloped this and then she wanted the edging that I had used on all her underpinnings, a pretty scallop stitch from my Elna SU stitched over two pieces of perle thread No.5.  I used the Avalon underneath so that the tulle wouldn't get caught up with the feed dog,  and just used narrow strips around the scallops.  I then just dabbed the scallops with water over the tulle and patted this area dry with a towel.  I did not want to run the risk of immersing the veil in a bowl of water and perhaps get the fine holes of the tulle filled with the wet avalon - it worked like a dream

They look great @Iminei
Like @Bodgeitandscarper I wouldn’t use a topper on a linen, only fabric with a pile.  With a loose weave you need to change the font itself to a bolder one which will give more coverage.

@Iminei do you actually have to do anything to get those designs...like fmq? Or does the machine do it all on its own? What I mean is, could you tweak it as you go along? Do you move the fabric around?
I'm asking because I like doing embroidery and wondered if there were any limitations with a specialist machine
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Acorn on December 06, 2019, 16:45:56 PM
Once it's all set up the machine does it automatically, you just have to change the thread colours as required.  The hoop is attached to an arm that moves the fabric around underneath the needle.

Post by: Celia on December 06, 2019, 17:04:42 PM
When I do free standing lace I use 2 layers of the fabric type water soluble like Avalon plus, I find this works better than the really thick plastic stabiliser.
I find the really thick one can tear and then we all know what happens, also be very careful if you change the size of freestanding embroidery.

Once it's set up you can leave it to get on with it.  You may need to rethread it if the thread breaks, change the bobbin when it runs out, and change the colours when necessary.

But you will be responsible for choosing the fabric, the design, the colours, the placement etc, and for setting it up correctly with the stabiliser in the hoop.  You can bet that if Iminei and I were to do the same embroidery design, the end results would be far from identical.

Yesterday I did a quick stitchout for a pair of coasters for a lovely friend and her husband whom I visited this lunchtime after a hospital visit in her neck of the woods (literally)!

What did I learn???

Well I learnt that a thick piece of expensive bump (curtain interlining from the Interior designers), a layer of stabiliser, a thick hessian fabric and a water soluble layer will not stay in the hoop!

I don't whether it was the slipperiness or thickness of the hessian fabric ... but in the end after multiple tries I gave up!

I hooped the interlining and stabiliser ... with no problem ... sprayed a touch of 505 onto the top and smoothed the hessian onto it, effectively floating the fabric.
I then lay the WS on top and watched in horror as the first stitchout went ahead, ruckling the WS as much as anything   :o... to be honest it didnt seem to affect the stitchout but it was not a pretty sight.

Before Elvistoo could start on the second letter I had figured out how to put  a line of basting stitches around the design and held the WS in place as that took place.

Perfect!
It stretched and held the WS perfectly ... the stitchout was also perfect and this morning very early I got up and finished the coasters, putting them through a rinse and spin and on to the radiator to dry before I left for my appt.

Whilst I was with my friends I secreted them onto a handy toasty radiator as they were still a lil damp and before I left, managed to wrap them up.

So lots learnt and I hope they like them when they come to unwrap!

@Iminei if you are still looking for heavyweight soluble I can vouch for this one (https://www.bsk.co.uk/backings-stabilisers-for-embroidery-heat--n-bond-26-c.asp) I have done freestanding butterflies using just one layer of this and it works a treat. My cup runneth over .....

Yesterday I had a memory of someone from the previous place a long, long time ago recommending Somac threads as being very good ... especially when it came to giving out free sample packs !!

So I hopped on the phone and spoke to the lovely Alison and explained I was starting out and confused about stabilisers etc.. she said not to worry and that she would send me some samples and proceeded to take my name and address ... It was at this point I became a bit worried that her computer would come up with flashing red lights and a big warning siren as I must admit I took advantage of their free sample back all that time ago ... but the phone line remained eerily silent and calm and she wished me a good day at the end.

Today I was woken by a very wet postman with a parcel !!

The samples has arrived and Oh my Word ... What a cornucopia of goodies there were ...

You need bobbin size A or SA156, I can't read the labels on your pics but I can see some labelled "L" - they won't work!

Their metallic threads are supposed to be very good.

What a haul though, lucky you!

Thank you Bodge ...

The labels on the bobbins (outer plastic bag) are

Pre wound sample bobbin pack - No plastic centre
Pre wound sample bobbin pack - cardboard sides
Pre wound sample bobbin pack

Any of these any good?? Or could I wind the thread onto my Brother bobbins?????

The stabilizers are

XH1 30 Micron
XH1 20 Micron

These look like plastic .... I think these are water soluble

XCE 80 - Easy tear
XVT 75 - Tear away
XVBO50 - cut away Vilene
XVBO80 -  80gm cut away
XCP 40 - Tear away
XCE 50 - Easy Tear 50gm

Does anyone here speak Stabilizer???

The Somac website isn't awfully helpful with what size those bobbins are!
Compare them to your current bobbins, if they seem the same depth they should work, but test 'em first!

The ones with an "L" on won't work, so if the others are the same size/depth as the Ls, then they'll be no good either.

As for stabilizer, I'm assuming the numbers are the thickness, so XCE 80 will be a heavyweight, and XCP 40 will be a lightweight.  I'd assume the first two "plastic" ones will be water soluble, just test a little corner.  I'd guess the 20 is for use as a topping, not sure about the 30.
I use 70 micron for a heavy water soluble on the bottom, although I have used two layers sometimes.

Cardboard side bobbins are for multineedle  machines.  The 80 weight cutaway is one you would use for very dense designs. Just try them out and see which you like the best and find works best for you. 20 micron is topping and the 30 you can hoop but if you want to do freestanding lace you would need either the fabric type solvy or 76 micron /ultra solvy.  It's size A bobbins you want.  I must admit that I tend to use florani no show mesh, polymesh  or soft and stronge most of the time as I like it.  My daughter who has my old machine likes filmoplast sticky stabaliser.

Check the size of the others against your Brother bobbins, there's quite an obvious difference in depth between the "L" size and the "A"s that are for Brother.

I would just rewind the cardboard bobbin thread onto one of your machine's bobbins in the same way as you would normally wind a bobbin.

By the way thanks for the information about that company with regards to the stabilisers - I really must get to grips with my embroidery unit and so far have very little in the way of stabilisers, but I do have a roll of filmoplast.  There is nothing available in shops around here so whatever I decide to get will have to be mail order.

One note about Filmoplast.  I gave up using it and stopped my mum too after she had problems and I discovered it was this stuff that was the problem.  It can gum up needles and also cause the thread to shred.  I always use Floriani if I want a sticky one now.

Thank you Ohsewsimple that is a great help.  I really must get to grips with my machine, to be honest I have had this a few years and am slightly terrified as there is so much that can go wrong through operator error.  Look what happened the other month in just threading up to sew some buttonholes, my thread got caught as I was threading this and I had to unscrew one end of the machine to free this and yes although I saw some computer parts in that area I steered well clear of them.

With Twopence's help a year or so ago now I bought Sue Box's embroidered roses - this was a download and on to a USB stick and that is as far as it has got - my intention is to embroider some rosebuds on plain fabric - I have an abundance of some lovely colours in Oxford Cotton and I do fancy some embroidery on the collars and cuffs, and perhaps down the front between the buttonholes - but the buttonhole one may be something different but still embroidered.

I need to stop being a scaredy cat!!!!!!!!!

Ohsosimple I havent had any problems with filmoplast gumming up my machines but it is not something I use very often as I tend to use no show mesh type and float most things. Think its one of those things that once you find one that works for you, you tend to keep on using it. I've got a drawer full of different ones but always tend to use the same one all the time.

Im looking for a supplier of my madeira rayon embroidery threads, 1000m cops in an extensive range of colours

but when I search I keep getting Madeira polyneon (http://) threads up ... is this the same thread or something entirely different ?

The reason is I'm making a set of butterflies, hoping to offer them for sale, and they use a vast amount of thread to create the basic wings before details are added so I need a reasonably inexpensive  source of supply.

Also How can I keep the 1000m spools tidy and not unravelling all over the place???

Barnyarns have Madeira rayon in 30, 40,60  and 12 thicknesses. They have a multibuy discount and at showtimes they sometimes have extra offers.  There are 422 colours in the 40. They are also helpful people!

If you're looking at Barnyarns for threads, take a look at "Hugo's Amazing Tape" too - it was mentioned in a recent email from them and may solve your unravelling problem.

I suppose it's the same principle as clingfilm, just thicker.  Sounds useful.

I don't know for sure, but I reckon that Hugos tape is clingfim!

My solution to stop unravelling reels is to use thread nets on them.  Linky (https://www.barnyarns.co.uk/hemline-thread-nets-5-pieces.html)

Madeira 200m rayon are £2.20 at Jaycotts, but if you can get the right colours in 1000m reels from Barnyarns you would save quite a lot - they're only £4.45 a reel.

Barnyarns do give a discount for every 3 reels you buy, but it looks like it's only about 7% at the moment - I'm sure it used to be more than that.  It makes the 1000m reels come out at £4.14, and the 200m ones come out at £2.28.

@Iminei     Hobkirks in Blackburn gave me 30 1000m Madeira Rayon 40 in a plastic storage box when I recently bought my Janome 14000, these boxes were on sale for £100, or very near that price at the time but I don't know if you were able to choose the shades that you wanted.
It might be worth giving them a call and appealing to their better nature?

Other than that good old fleabay might be helpful.

@Iminei I use Hugo's Amazing Tape.  I’ve had it for years.  It’s great.  Very thick, just cut off what you need.  Happy to and you some to try if you want.  I use the 2” one and it works well on the Madeira cops.

@Iminei I trim the used stabiliser into rough rectangles and sew them together, using a long stitch and overlap of roughly 5mm.
I don't use my 'patchwork' for anything special but  it's useful if you are testing a design out or embroidering on thicker fabrics like denim.
I always move the design towards the side/corner of the hoop as well as the excess stabiliser is then as large as possible.
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Lachica on April 25, 2020, 17:00:48 PM
What @Kad says. Joined up stabiliser seems ok for light designs but I wouldn't use it for a dense design as my machine doesn't always like the doubled up areas. Good for testing out a design.

I do the same, join it together.  Sometimes the leftover from a large hoop might fit a small one.  I also use it for doing seams on difficult fabric so narrow strips are cut.

So what to do on a discombobulated afternoon where your HSTs and QSTs just wont behave???

Play with  Elvistoo of course!!!

1st up was the embroidery for a ring cushion .. for money !!!  0_0

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Next, long overdue, some towels for 'Is boat ..

First time for towels for me! So I practised on a face cloth ...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Went nicely (I think) but the back not so good ... the tear away doesnt seem to want to and tho I wound a Red bobbin it looks as tho theres more white than red ... but who can tell with all that tearway still present?

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I used woven water soluble on top (Thx @Celia ) and regular tear away on bottom ... and now I dont know what to do for the best now ... Do I swill it in a sink of water? run it through the rinse cycle of the machine ???

Please help?!
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Bodgeitandscarper on June 03, 2020, 13:48:01 PM
I'd use a heavy weight wash away on the bottom too, and I think I'd use the same colour bobbin as top thread - I know it will be back to front writing, but that's kind of what you'd expect to see isn't it?

I've just soaked the embroidered bits in the wash basin or a bowl to get rid of the stabiliser, but it takes a few changes of water and a while for it to go.
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Celia on June 03, 2020, 14:38:51 PM
The only problem with using water soluble on the bottom is it needs to be quite strong if you are going to float the towel  on top, it is also more expensive but well worth a try.
Good to see what you are making.

I can chalk this down as a practice ... Asda Flannels are cheap but I'd rather not.

I have used the tear away on the bottom and managed to remove it but it does depend on which one you use and also the design, most of them water will eventually remove it but obviously not ideal for future use

Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Ohsewsimple on June 03, 2020, 22:48:59 PM
I wouldn’t use a wash away on the bottom. Once it’s washed out you will have no support under the stitching.  We used to use sticky stabiliser for towels.
As for removing the excess from the back, use a pair of tweezers and pick the bits out.  Should come out easily.  Just be careful not to pull the stitches.  It will look much more polished than being left.

So WHAT am I meant to use ???

Washaway (the woven type) on the front and on the bottom???

Also ... There were lots of pulled towelling on the bottom ???

Now to be honest I didnt really look at the back of the flannel before I hooped it, but its pretty much a new flannel ... Could Elvistoo have had anything to do with these towelling pulls ???
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: wrenkins on June 04, 2020, 09:01:01 AM
I know about towelling. I just happened to be doing some practice stitches on some yesterday and no matter what I did the top thread pulled through. I adjusted every dial and knob and it still did it... and that was just blanket stitch. Not your fancy business.
I also used towelling as the wadding in my SM mat (which is why I had lumps of it lying about) and it pulled through to the backing. I'm wondering does towelling require a special needle or a slightly non-regular one???
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Celia on June 04, 2020, 09:29:09 AM
Ok not to sure about the loops of towelling  on the back this shouldn’t happen with any machine I know of.
When I do towels I used to use the tear away on the back, float the towel on the top and use the watersoluable on the top but I like you would end up with lots of stabiliser to deal with on the back, some would remove better than others, stabilisers have changed a lot over the years.

Lately I have used 2 layers of water solvable to hoop up ( the material type one you are using) float the towel and use another layer of water solvable on top, I have not had a problem with there being no stabiliser left when the towels are washed but that can depend on the actual embroidery density.

The last few towels I have done I have used the magnetic hoop (I use Husqvarna machines) no stabiliser on the bottom and the same water solvable you have on the top and this I Has worked the best.  As far as the colour thread I use the embroidery thread on top and match the bobbin thread to the colour of the towel, I also cheat and use ordinary sewing thread (Gutermann) in the bobbin, I do know not all machines will take this.

Hope this helps
Good luck

Hope some of this helps

Post by: Ohsewsimple on June 04, 2020, 11:53:22 AM
I don’t think your machine would have affected the back.  If it was a problem I think it would pull bits up to the top.  Some machines don’t like certain sticky stabilisers.  I had some I had to get rid of as it just wouldn’t play nicely on mine.  But worked a treat on the big Brother semi industrial.

I don’t like hooping towels myself so would be using something like Florian’s wet n stick.  I find it works beautifully on my machine.  It’s easy to stick and unstick after I finish.
https://rnk-floriani.com/floriani-stabilizing-solutions-towels-robes.php

I don’t think there’s a problem using tear away.  But tear away comes in different weights as do all stabilisers.  So you match the weight to the density of the design.  If you’re doing a large design with lots of stitches then a light tear away won’t work.  I’m also fussy about what tear away I use.  If you hold  some cheap stuff up to the light you will find there are gaps in the stabiliser.  So some areas of your embroidery won’t be stabilised as well as some others.

The wash away on top doesn’t have to be thick.   Reserve your best stuff for underneath designs.

Yes you can clip the thread ends BUT  be careful how close you get to the fabric.   You could cut the tie off stitch which could result in the embroidery coming undone.

The short answer to what are you meant to use is that there is no one right answer.  Just as with any sewing.  There are a few alternatives.  As long as you know the ins and outs of using each type of stabiliser etc, then you can sample and decide what works for you.  I always disagreed with my college tutor over bound buttholes.  I couldn’t get a decent one with her method.  And she couldn’t get a good result the way I do mine.   :)

What is the project?  Where from, and are there more detailed instructions somewhere for it?  I've never done anything like that, so I'm not really much help, but would love to see what you're planning to make.
Just a thought, do those inches convert into nice round centimetres?

Edit, just checked the first number - 3.43 inches is 8.7 centimetres, so that's a bit easier to find on a tape measure.

The 'dieline thingy' is effectively a pattern for the piece of fabric that you lay down on the hooped work in the appropriate area, which is then sewn down by the machine. If the dieline shape is a simple one, rectangle etc, at the point in the embroidery that you have to place the fabric shape lay your chosen fabric over the correct area, allow the machine to sew the 'tackdown' line and remove the hoop from the machine. VERY CAREFULLY trim your chosen fabric CLOSE to the stitched line ( curved scissors are useful ) DON'T disturb the hooped work!!. Replace the hoop on the machine and continue.

I've used this method when the printer has run out of ink or paper etc, it's not recommended but as I don't know anything about PES it's a work-around that might be useful to you.

Another thing to try is to step through the embroidery on the machine and just sew out the 'tackdown' line on hooped stabiliser. Use this as a pattern to cut the fabric layer.

Good luck.

I will be getting my embroidery machine tomorrow.  It has a 4 x 4  hoop. I am wondering if what is the minimum amount of fabric I need to fit in the hoop?
Title: Re: Questions from a Machine Embroidery Virgin.
Post by: Kad on June 17, 2020, 06:46:07 AM
@Sara-S
The embroidery area will be 4" * 4",  If you intend to hoop the fabric/stabiliser ( similar to using a frame for hand embroidery),  the actual shape of the  hoop frame determines the size of fabric that you need as a minimum but probably about 8" * 8" will be sufficient.
The other option is to hoop the stabiliser only and then  'float' the fabric to be embroidered on top ( possibly held in place with a little spray fabric glue) , then as long as the fabric is large enough to accommodate the embroidery design you're sorted.
Have fun  :D

It’s here!  I have had a chance to play with it a bit. Of course, I need to spend time going all thought the manual.
Here are my first test pieces. Yes, the flannel is ugly. It used to be a shirt, belonging to a friend’s teenage son, who has since outgrown it. I have a few of his old shirts, of which I like this print the least, so I don’t mind wasting it on test pieces.

It’s the Brother PE535. It has a 4” hoop.

@Iminei thanks!  I thought of some more questions;
1)How often do you change the needle?

2) Unlike my regular sewing machine, the embroidery machine has no storage compartment. So where do you keep things that need to be close-by-such as spool caps? (There are 2 that I interchange with some frequency.)

@Sara-S mine has storage but it annoys me as it’s at the back of the machine.  Could you use a small plastic pot or basket and keep it nearby?

Mine has no storage either .... I think its the way the machine is set up and with the hoop moving over the machine bed ... You dont want to be fiddling about upsetting its movements I guess ...

I keep all my embroidery accessories in a Gift box I received one Christmas from my now ex MIL aeons ago ...
At first it was a general sewing bits and bobs box but I outgrew it ... Now I can just about get my EM stuff in there including ... and this is very important, the Brother bobbins.

Still working on storage, though I have worked out as couple of issues.
1) Where to put it, when I want to put it away- I went to home Depot (Big-box hardware store chain in the US) and got a rolling tool bag that was the perfect size and even had loads of pockets.

2) The spool caps- I just leave both on the spool pin. The one I am not using really isn’t in the way and I can’t lose them if they’re on the spool pin.

It's a polyester, so colourfast, and SewEssential have it for £3.25.  I've not used it, so can't tell you what it's like in real life.

I’ve used Isacord.  Got it from Sewessential actually.  Never had a problem with it.

I was having trouble with the threader on the embroidery machine. It’s back from the shop now. The repair, a screw that was installed too loose (and got a bit looser with time) caused a timing problem.  This  was covered by the warranty.

BTW, I was trying to figure out some storage solutions.  For the small items, I got a little drawer that could be stuck under my work table. The adhesive it came with didn’t hold, so I removed that & replaced it with heavy-duty hook & loops.

If you open the template file in your software you should be able to then print it out - Under 'File' maybe?  I know nothing about PES Lite, but you can do it with the free software.  I use the free version of Embrilliance for printing templates.

How often should you replace the needle on an embroidery machine?

That depends on various factors.  The fabric you are stitching on...man made fabrics blunt needles faster.  The number of stitches in a design.  I can usually tell when it needs changing.  The needle makes a popping sound when it’s blunt.  But if you’re doing a very large design change it afterwards.  They should go on for several hours really.  If you find it’s not stitching properly try changing the needle to start with.

I generally find that the thread starts breaking when the needle needs changing.  It does vary a lot - I've just done a lot of work all on one needle, but sometimes I need to change needle in the middle of a fairly modest project.

I'm currently a really big fan of Organ anti-glue needles - they seem to last really well.
