Title: Official Stash Sewalong Competition
Post by: Francesca on March 01, 2017, 22:51:09 PM
Hello everyone and welcome to our inaugural Stash Sewalong Competition!

Introduction
This competition is aiming to get everyone sewing from their stash. You must use stash only fabric for the majority of your creation.

Dates
The competition will run from Monday 13th March - Wednesday 12th April. You have until 23.59 on the 12th to complete.

Rules

How To Enter
Entries should be submitted by email to sewalongs@thesewingplace.org.uk with the subject Stash Sewalong.

Copy the following and fill it out:

Quote
Username:
Number of items to enter:
A short title and blurb about each item, no more than 150 words:
Number of metres used (per item and a total):
Attach three images as stated in the rules*

*If you have lots of images to share, send them in separate emails. Just write "1 of 3" etc in the subject line, or zip them up. Or use WeTransfer.  We strongly encourage if you have sewn a garment that you wear it or get someone else to model it for you. This is the main photo that people will judge you on and people really like to see others wearing garments, it looks a million times better than something hanging sorrily on a hanger! People are far less likely to be as critical of your body as you are, so please please please do consider modelling garments! These pictures will be posted in our gallery, on the voting page, and the winner's thread. If you have made a complete outfit with multiple garments, you can wear them together in one pic. Just state it in the email.

How To Win
Winners will be chosen by public vote.

Prizes
Yep, the most important bit...

First Prize
Your choice of:
Runner Up Prize
As above, but with a £5 value

OK then, let's get chatting! You can start planning from now :D I'm excited!

FAQ

What is considered a stash fabric?
Something you bought or came into possession of more than three months ago.

Can I use fabric from my business?
You can use fabric from your business as long as it wasn't purchased specifically for a client or order.

Can I sew anything?
Yes, this is not just a garment competition.

How many things should I sew?
Just one, at least. But you can sew more. Maybe a whole outfit, a selection of cushions... bear in mind this is member vote so a quick tea towel might not be the most inspiring project to garner votes!

What can I do before the 13th?
Only washing and drying fabric, preparing patterns, purchasing notions. You can sew a toile before the start date.

Do the rules of the sew a long allow us to ask for help on the forum?
Absolutely! Please don't be quiet!

How do we put the Official Sewalong banner on our profile?
Copy the following code:
Code: [Select]
[url=http://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,95.0.html][img]http://thesewingplace.org.uk/banners/stashsewalong.jpg[/img][/url]
Is there's a limit to how many items we can include?
There is no limit, but all items will come under one "entry" to be voted for.

Got my white stash box out this morning, but didn't have time to check out patterns.  I like the way you've laid things out Fran, it leaves time for me to organise myself!

I was planning to do the White competition May/June if you want to hold on to your white fabric for that... but white items welcome in this competition too of course! The plan is to sew several items if you can :)

Sorry Fran, I've obviously not read things properly (I'm doing VAT work at the same time!).

I've got plenty more fabric, so I'll just join in with whatever is happening!  :D

I'm not sure how many things I will actually make in a month - my average is .5  0_0

I will give it a go though. I do have plans to make some new cushions from some lovely woodland material I've had for *a while* and my two young girls are always looking at my fabrics and saying 'can you make me such and such from this' so maybe I actually will! Have to be quick simple things though otherwise it won't be much of a stash buster!

I'm in - though I'll only have the first three weeks to sew as I'll be back in the uk for easter to stoke my stash, pick up my new  :sew: and drive the Bernina dealer to drink on my intro course.

Hi Fran, can we sew anything? Or is it an item of clothing?  0_0
I can't see if I'm supposed to make a certain item. Don't want to a wedding dress is a mini skirt is what's required! Not that I can make a wedding dress, may struggle with a mini skirt!  :sew:

Oooh must get thinking. Is there any requirement on the length of tie the fabric must be in stash for?

Does anyone mind if I take part... I do sew for a living. Mostly soft furnishing, curtains blinds but in a past life I made wedding dresses....I'm happy to just sew along and not enter the actual competition... mind you if I get to busy it might not happen at all

Anything! And as many things as you can, if you choose to take on multiple projects. The only qualifier is they must be majority stash fabric.

More than welcome. I would say in your case it needs to be from personal stash rather than fabric bought for a client specifically.

Thank you Fran
That's fine I have a huge stash (I worked in a fabric shop for 15+ years) I wouldn't ever post pics of a clients order as they don't belong to me.

Making this up as I go along but I'm going to say three months. I feel that's long enough to be considered as gathering dust in the stash. If anyone disagrees we can discuss.

How "white" is white?  Are we allowed to use light cream or off white (for those who aren't summer/winter colouring and don't wear bright white)?

I would say yes, as long as it's more on the white tint than the yellow one. Down to your judgement really and whether you feel it's light enough for good sportsmanship...

But the white contest won't be until May/June so it doesn't have to be for this one!

I've got a large stash ( so I'm told) so  I'll save the white for a later challenge. I want to go home now - no more holidays, had enough!

Going to check stash tonight, there is some stuff at the bottom of the pile that hasn't seen the light of day for several years.

I need to stop saving stuff for 'when I lose weight!'

If I ever do lose enough weight to drop a dress size I'll have an excuse to go on a massive stash restock.

I'm thinking of making  a Style Arc  Flat bottom Flo pants  in some blue figured jacquard and perhaps if there's enough a waistcoat? There, I've written it down now!

EAsy peasy lemon squeezy- I've taken reduced hours at work so can't afford to buy anyway...and the stash is pretty big.
I'm already doing a SWAP entry [although I've reached a bit of a doldrum stage], and keeping up with monthly challenges on FB's Sewing Bloggers' Network.  My Historical Sewing has dropped off a bit, but I reckon I can manage some of these without major stress.  Probably.

Oh my goodness! First time in ages, I've spent the evening  in the sewing space - except there isn't much space there any  more after all my rooting!

Still, I have re-acquainted  myself  with a large part of my stash, found some nice patterns, so I'm  revving  up for the Sew along already.

Cautiously optimistic about the mojo  returning (fingers crossed) :D

Whereabouts are you?
Palamos on the Costa Brava between Gerona and Barcelona.  Lovely  apt right on the sea so we've been delighted to people watch  and had some great walks.  Food here is amazing and there is a daily fish market and local markets. This is a proper working town so it;s not all shut up like Lloret and Tossa. The coastline is stunning, full of little coves only accessible on foot. Had one weekend watching an international sailing regatta and then a week of Carnaval. Had family and 2 lots of friends to visit but now everyone's gone and the huge spring storms are lashing the beach. I don't have  :vintage:. Want to go home.

Oh of course! It's not meant to be about hushing up when working on it, it's all about talking to each other and making things together with an added carrot at the end.

OK, So I will have a go at this http://www.stylearc.com.au/stylearc/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=710&category_id=2&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=42.  I've already made it  before in a stretch woven, but that seems overkill so this time no stretch. I have altered the pattern and shifted the side seam to the side and this time I'm going to add pockets in the side seams and  alter the waistband so it's totally flat fronted and just have a bit of elastic across the back. Maybe I'll slim down the leg a bit more too or even crop them - hmmm.

OK, I've procrastinated long enough, count me in.

I'd already decided I liked the idea of Sudoku sewing and was going to make it spring themed. I wasn't going to enter the competition that's on Pattern Review, so will enter this one. I was a bit scared of the PR one  :|

Well I think I have decided what I'm doing but may well change my mind before next week.

https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v8962
I've made it a couple of times before and it's a very easy to wear top I found some peachy marl knit in my stash that's very soft and fine so will be ok to wear during spring. Everything was going well then .....

I got the pattern out and couldn't find the back yoke piece !! I turned my sewing room upside down and it was nowhere to be found - at least it's tidy now !!- an hour later still no sign and then I unfolded the instructions and there it was all scrunched up !!

So after all that I am good to go and have a tidy sewing room, mind you I'm still thinking about a gingham top or an olive dress so may well end up doing something totally different after all that  :D

I'd like to join in too.
Would like to "get rid of" a length of black crinkle silk for starters.
I think I need to stop worrying about finding a use for a length of fabric that uses it all up and instead make something out of it and turn the rest into bags or something.

I hopefully have attached the dress I want to copy for the sew a long, modelled by the child I am making it for who is 5.  This is a 12-18 month dress she is wearing so a little too small.  I am not sure if you can see the buttons down the front as it isn't the clearest picture.

Any suggestions on how to copy it and how to scale it up to fit?   She is quite skinny so it probably needs more length added and a little more width.

She looks lovely   Do you want to work from a pattern or trace off the dress... looking at it... its too narrow across the chest for her now...it needs to be lengthened in the bodice and the skirt needs to be longer and fuller... you could use something like this http://www.simplicitynewlook.com/6884-2855?___SID=U  as a base  Take some measurement to see what size you need to work too

I was hoping to trace from the dress.  This is her younger sisters dress, so it does need to be widened and lengthened, but I didn't want to buy anymore patterns at the moment.  I do have this dress pattern simplicity 2377 https://www.ecosia.org/images?q=simplicity+2377 and this Butterick 6659 which is a nightie https://www.ecosia.org/images?q=butterick+6659.  If they can be adapted that might be easier for me than tracing and altering it myself as I still feel a bit anxious about doing that.

Ok. Count me in. I'm going to start with a dress from some lovely brown wool  :wool: crepe which I have been getting out, stroking, then putting away for months, reluctant to cut into. I made a brown/cream  Linton tweed jacket last year which lies unworn in the wardrobe as I have nothing to wear with it  :'( , so if I get on with this I will have an outfit, yay!

There, now I've told you I'm committed!

Do I get extra kudos for lining it?

I do have this dress pattern simplicity 2377 https://www.ecosia.org/images?q=simplicity+2377 and this Butterick 6659 which is a nightie https://www.ecosia.org/images?q=butterick+6659.
The second one is good its the right shape bodice as it is cut with a shoulder seam... do you want the front bodice fastening on the original dress?

have you made up the nightie pattern?

you can cut out the bodice in an old sheet /pillow case and check the fit and if it comes on and off ok then put false buttons down the front...

another idea is to put tucks in the skirt which can be let down to give added length if she has a growing spurt
I edited post as a visitor arrived mid writing it and Jessie has posted similar advice

Rowe 1311, have you thought of making a toile and making your alterations on that?  It may work out well enough to be wearable anyway....

I love making for little girls, and this is my preferred way of working.  Cut out the toile, check sizes and techniques, and then cut and sew the dress proper.

That's my preferred way of working so that I have half a chance of getting a wearable frock!

I've just had a look in the cupboard:
Several lengths of polyester jersey, plains and printed.

A good 2m x 170cm of all over lace, but quite opaque as lace goes.  OK for a top but would need lining for a dress or skirt. Might be a cotton or a cotton mix and dull French navy in colour.

3m x 115cm of a gorgeous soft white jacquard woven silk fabric that's been in stash since David Evans in Crayford closed.  It has a sticker in the corner 3 x 7.95  which I think means 3m @ £7.95 - but I probably paid half that in the closing sale.  Might keep that for the white sew-along.

Four dress lengths of P&Q weight cotton - and Doughty's are coming to town again next month!

Also lots of shorter pieces.  What I need is an incentive to find uses for all those pieces which get left over, usually half - one metre in length.

Thanks Jessie and vege grow.  I will try the bodice as a toile and then see how that works. I haven't actually made that one but if it is too tight I can chop the front piece in half and add buttons.

I love the idea of tucks for letting it down as she grows.  I haven't done pin tucks so it will be learning something new too.  I am not sure I will be ready for the sew a long now.

Delving into my stash, I found this -  wool crepe - sort of lilac colour.  It has the purchase receipt in the bag, bought on 04-06-05,  I thank that it's a bit longer than 3 months 0_0
There's 4 metres and it cost £14.00.
Any ideas of what I could to do with it?

They look great! I love Style Arc, keen to see how these turn out.

Have you stash-dived yet?

I have fabric in mind - I bought it 2 years back for a client but changed my mind about its fit for purposeness  and kept it for me. I'll dig it out tomorrow and send a pic (again, if I can do this) when I take pictures of the fabric and extras I got today from my fiance! ( Good job Mr C doesn't read this!)

I underlined Mum's spring mac with unwashed calico. I overlocked all the pieces together actually so I was just working with one piece. Came out beautifully.

I'm in too, destashing is my priority for the year as my cupboard is over-spilling.
I am finishing a coat which should be done by 13th so I will be ready for the next project - probably a spring skirt or dress.

This is my blue/grey stash fabric - it's slightly bluer than the photo shows, but really not my colour.  I bought it because it was cheap!

Thinking I might turn it into a shirt I was browsing through Jaycott's patterns last night when a nightdress pattern popped up, and fell into the basket.  Should be quick and easy to run up with the overlocker.

I've also been looking through the boxes with bra making stuff in.

I think I have everything to use the coffee and cream; the brown fabric isn't powernet, it's a fairly heavy shiny lycra.  I might use that double for the wings and interline it for the lower cups.

I have plenty of pink fabric, but a dearth of suitable pink elastic.  I have orders in to both Sewing Chest and Elise and hopefully between them there will be something suitable for the bottom band and the back fastener.  Also some more underwires.

We haven't really started the stash-bust yet and I'm beginning to panic. I found my patterns and hacked it to add built-on pockets, narrowed the legs, and folded all up feeling :) - then I decided to roll up some fabric for my troupe of 18 ladies. Took me nearly an hour to roll it all onto tubes -  over 150 metres. :( Now that's all got to be cut out and sewn up - plus all the rest! And my back aches already, so now I've stopped for the day. :drink:

Still deciding what my stash bust will be (I know I am contest mistress so I'll just be playing along).

I'm thinking McCalls 6696 (https://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m6696) shirtwaister dress which has been in my stash forever, in some Beagle print cotton (was used by Barbour as jacket lining for a bit!)...

That's my first thought anyway. 6696 has been really popular with curvy bloggers and easy to FBA.

Ok so I have several candidates for the Stash sewalong including a white remnant from a charity shop which has black polka dots and a black scallop border it is just.. and I mean just enough for a vintage look dress for my DD... Question is does it qualify for the white sewalong   and since the dress is for a wedding in early July am I cutting it a bit fine

Hmm, from the description I'd have to say no. It sounds like it includes just too much black. White sewalong is really intended to be quite white (or cream-ish) but possibly allow some colour e.g piping, zip colour, top stitching. But with polka dots and a border I'd say it sounds a bit too far from white.

I envision that the white sewalong will showcase really fabulous style lines and fitting, so where prints and colours distract from the garment it's sort of going against the spirit of the contest.

Well I have chosen the fabric from my stash for the sewalong, and possibly the pattern. The fabric was a Birmingham rag market buy but has sat around for a while as I've not known what to make with it. I've made the Simple Sew Annabelle dress  :frock: before but it was an absolute disaster (awful fabric and way too big), so I'm kinda hoping I can improve on my first attempt! Of course, I might change my mind about the pattern :pattern: by Monday!

Cut out some bias for the seam bindings - from stash  - bummer to have to cut into it for such a small bit of binding. But I might use it in the mystery quilt!

Decided to stay the pocket openings too. Then I overlocked all the other raw edges - after all I don't have time for couture finishes on all the seams at the moment!.

Must do some proper sewing now! Do we have  guilty looking emoji?

Here are my entries - not sure how many I'll get through but I'm ever the optimist
1. Tshirt - Ottobre - fabric is a remnant from a dress 4 years ago. This will probably be a prototype as I've not made this pattern before
2. Jacket Ottobre mag - fabric 2yrs + this will probably be a prototype unless I suddenly fall in love with it, I don't really like the fabric, it reminds me of upholstery fabric
3. Burda dress - I love this pattern, it's a TNT, and I have made 'a few' - the fabric is at least 2 years old, I love it, it's a linen/silk mix (i think) but it's sat there too long, I need to use it.
4 Vogue dress - had this pattern ages, and again the fabric has sat on the top of the too-nice-to-cut-into pile (with no3). The pattern needs an fba which I've had a few stabs at but has gone on the will-get-back-to-it pile. The fabric is quite sheer so it will need lining. I need a shove to get this finished, it's a big birthday this year, I aim to wear it ✂️

Changed my mind at 5am, and decided to do something else.  The woven toile wasn't working, and I've sort of fallen out of love with the Butterick.

So, three boxes later, I have brought an assortment of fabric, and patterns into work.  After a bit of a clean up in the office, I hope to give this my total attention.

OH lets me sew in work, as long as work is up to date, and the phone answered, so I may get something done!

I do feel a bit behind though....

I too changed my mind.  I have six metres in total of gorgeou silk that I bought in India probably 20 years ago.  Two different shades of turquoise.  Was lying in bed last night thinking about what to do with it.

Have now given myself a firm talking too and will stick to my original plan.

Forgot to bring the Stylearc Barb pattern to work, so I've just printed it off, stuck it, and cut it out.  Now to do the alterations for my little stumpy legs, and do a first fit.

I'm using stretch denim from the stash, which will make it an easy one.

For the blouse, I'm torn between Style 4824 (it's an old one), New Look 6266, and New Look 6212.  I'm tempted by the 6212 as I haven't made it before, but it hasn't got a sleeve which means drafting one.

Decisions, decisions....

Well making the most of my day off I have cut out the skirt and made a start sewing it up BUT the zip I was going to use is broken so I am going to have to shorten another - not quite sure how I do that whenever I have tried before it doesn't work  so will be googling that and I've decided it needs lining the pattern isn't lined but I think it will sit better and the material isn't as thick as I thought. I think I have some suitable lining material put it may require a bit of piecing so will have a look at that after my cheese on toast !

First quick'n'dirty entry made. :D
 Simplicity 3696 (http://demandware.edgesuite.net/sits_pod26/dw/image/v2/AAWA_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-simplicity-product-master/default/dwa19f5e10/images/product/3696/simplicity-sleepwear-pattern-3696-envelope-front.jpg?sw=1000&sh=1000&sm=fit)

A couple of metres of dull navy knit fabric, almost like lace but a bit denser, and not much stretch.  Bought a couple of years ago from TP Textiles in Warrington.  Not sure of the fibre content, probably a mix but probably including cotton and/or viscose.  Not the colour I would normally choose for a nightie (or anything else) but it's soft and quite thin.

Run up on the overlocker with red coverstitching to brighten it slightly.  Not quite enough fabric to cut the sleeves full length in one piece so added the frill.

Now to sort out the rest of the stash and decide on something a bit more challenging.

Made some progress.  Cut out Style 4824 and StyleArc Barb.  Both of these are a compromise, the first choice for the blouse was a gorgeous grey and black, but there just wasn't enough fabric.  The purple one I've used is, slippery, frays like the devil, and is going to be a bugger to sew.

The trousers I've made before, but left the pattern at home.  So, I'm working on a minimally adjusted pattern, although my stretch denim fabric is very forgiving.

My back is now done in (cutting out table is a bit low), so taking a break.

Ottobre t-shirt done, very happy with it, l lowered the neck further than the pattern, i think the diagram is not quite true. I sewed it all on the overlocker and did the hems with a twin needle; I ended up doing the neck band three times as I wasn't happy with it, then topstitched it. I like the fabric and i like the pattern, though I'll probably do a fba next time for a better fit.

1.5m.  This is darker than in the photo.  It is what I can only describe as brushed silk in a deep reddish brown.   Bought I Beijing 23 years ago with the intention of making an interview dress.

I have thread in my thread stash that matches it too.

Have cut it out from a self drafted cowl neck-top pattern.

Used ... 1.5m.

Black crinkle silk  bought from Truro Fabrics two years ago with the intention of using it as a first version of a bridesmaids dress before I made myself the final version.

Lining from same source and time.  Have thread and interfacing in the stash.

Have cut for a below knee length quite full skirt with a elasticated waist which I hope to get finished before going on holiday next week.

I love stats too.  Does that mean we are being judged on how much fabric we put to good use?

Not necessarily, I just love stats  0_0

But as it's up for member vote, some members might be more impressed with how many metres you've got through, whereas others might cast their vote based on a fantastic make! It's all up for interpretation.

Wahoo our first stashbust! How does it feel?

How many metres did you stashbust with that? I'm thinking of keeping a tally to share at the end of the sewalong.

I didn't actually measure it before I started, but measuring the FO it would have been 1.75m, or thereabouts and 60"/150cm wide..  I tried to edit the original post but none of the formatting buttons came onto the screen.

Used ...

And is one of the seams.  Can't think of anything else to show you.  Pictures of large bits of  black fabric will get a bit  boring.

Here is the fabric and pattern I'll be using next.  The floral is only a few months old but the plain red and plain black have been in the cupboard for ages and both have already been cut into so might be a bit difficult to measure.

I'll be making version A, but might do long sleeves, haven't decided yet.

Looking fab everyone!

You don't have to share any pics now if you don't want to, by the way. The three photos specified in the rules just need to be sent to me at some point which I will get round to in the final week. But I do enjoy seeing pics so continue if you wish!

I'd like to get involved in this. I'm just waiting and hoping I'm going to find the time to fit it in.

My intention is to make myself a shirt...New Look 6407, View A... out of some lovely lightweight denim fabric I bought last August....and also to make a simple pair of pyjama bottoms....Simplicity 4057... for my daughter....this is in some cotton check fabric I've had lying around for about two years.

Pics have been taken of the fabrics with the patterns. I'll upload them when I get the chance....hopefully later.

Sandra.

Both my dresses now cut out and prepared ready for sewing. One was cut from 2 mtrs and the other from 2.5 mtrs. Is it 5 posts and 3 pictures for each item made?

BTW how do we put the Official Sewalong banner on our profile?

I've started. Fused fine interfacing to my entire length of wool crepe and cut out both dress and lining. I don't have a pattern to show as it's been modified from my dress block and now bears no resemblance to the original pattern. It will be a straight dress with cap sleeves and princess seams. That's it for today as hubby has brought me some red medicine  :toast:
That's 2.2m of fabric and 2.2m of lining

I have tonight put the zip in and attached the lining so that leaves the waistband buttonhole and hems to do.
Is there's a limit to how many items we can include in this thread

Nope as many as you like, but they will be considered under one "entry" which can be voted for.

I have made my pants twice - every bloody seam had to be unpicked  and even the elastic got twisted. I don't know what's happened to this pattern - I've made it several times before and it's always been fine, but this time had problems with the  crotch ( and no-one wants to see that!) and the depth of the back yoke - was too shallow.  Nearly finished now, just hems to do.

Ok folks my first Garment.. cut out yesterday but delayed by fridge freezer repair man ... don't ask... this is a blouse I am intending to make in a lovely floral cotton lawn but decided that I would test it out on this cheesecloth stripe which I reckon has been in the stash for about 10 years ( gulp)

I had 2.5 metres of fabric and decided to add 2" length.. bias cut the pockets .. a bias flat piping across back yoke and around the mandarin collar cut the sleeves longer and added a bias cut band round them as I thought it needed detail

All from stash including the buttons 2 sets of 3 very similar buttons which I alternated .. glad I added the detail as I think it would be very boring with out

Bad day here, started on project 2 the jacket. I'd traced the pattern out a few weeks ago, so I pinned it, cut it out, ironed the interfacing on then sewed the back and front up, tried it on for size. Quart and pint pot came to mind, unpicked it, let seams out, no joy. I think i'd misread the pattern and traced off the size based on hip size and not bust

Earlier I thought I might have produced the first  wadder of the competition.  However has persevered and think I will end up with jus to a skirt that is shorter than I wanted that has too gathering the the waist.

I have started on simple straight skirt (Lekaka 5088, free pattern) which I can then use as a starting point for variations. I have made this a few times before but earlier versions no longer fit  :(
I have just cut the fabric for the toile (1m) out of printed cotton which came ages ago in an Abakhan bundle. Part of the toiling will involve adding a shaped waistband, rather than the straight waistband which came with the pattern. Also  I need to add at least 5 cm to the length, so will need to add a kick pleat at the back.

Veg, I love your shirt!  I've got the same one on the desk in front of me!  Not making it this time, but definitely one for later on.

Nearly done with my trousers - what a saga (very nearly binned them), then I can begin the shirt I cut out.

I've also found another top pattern I want to do, but can't find the traced copy.  I'll brace my back, and trace another copy...  :(

I finished my trousers then realised the pocket hack I'd done just didn't work - I'd forgotten there is a back yoke and I'd grafted the cut-on pocket bag onto the leg without taking that extra depth into consideration, thus leaving a somewhat lowslung pocket right at the widest part of my hip.  :(Not good look, so off came the pockets!. Teach me not to make a toile for changes, this being a TNT pattern in its original state.

I really must get into my costumes now - I've still got 40 odd to do before mid May but I'm just not feeling the love - ho-hum.

2 metres used.

Well the waist band is on and either I have lost weight - which I haven't ! Or something is not quite right.
I have made the skirt before and it fit fine but this time it fits well everywhere but is just a little baggy at the waist. Not enough to fall down so dignity is not at risk  :D but enough to bother me so I have walked away and am going to try and figure out if I can get belt loops on without having to take the waist band off

McCalls 7357 now cut out, it used:
0.75m of main fabric and about 0.25m of each of the two plain contrasts.
Total 1.25 m of stash used.

I had a little panic whilst cutting out.  Like Matt in the last GBSB I lost one of the pattern pieces.  :|
Fortunately it was a small piece, the front yoke.  From the main front piece (for the width) and the front neck band (for the length) piece I was able to more or less reproduce it.  Fingers crossed that it will all come together properly.

After a lot of bother, I've now finished the Stylearc Barb trousers. All the fault of a faulty pattern copy coming off the printer.....

1.25 mtrs used

I've started the shirt though I'll not finish it before the weekend (Nana duties).

I have picked another top to make as well, it's one I've had for ages, but I'm going to try it in a knit.

It's been fab Fran!  I've been muddling along dragging a sluggish mojo behind me for months.  I may not have made much for the Sew Along yet, but I have sorted patterns and fabric out, and the enthusiasm has returned!  :)

So much so, that I have an unfinished knitted onesie, and several Peter Rabbits waiting to be finished!!  ;)

It has also been really interesting to see what others have made from their stash.

I've failed in following the rules properly as I have cut out and sewn up before photographing.   :ninja:

However this competition has inspired me to sort through my stash and be realistic about what fabric I will actually use (see post in For Sale forum!).

I have cut out a dress and a top and made the top up yesterday evening (super speedy for me) ready to wear on Saturday.

So thank you for inspiring me to reduce my stash - I can now shut the storage chest it lives in properly and the husband can't moan I've got too much!

I will need to get a toning belt somthe one in the picture isn't the one I intend using and I will try and get a picture of me wearing it but didn't think being in my pyjamas and modelling was a very good idea  :D

1 metre of main fabric and about 0.8 metres of lining

I have decided to do it all on the overlocker so this could end in tears, I have never put sleeves in using th eoverlocker I always revert to the machine but I am going to give it a go lots of tacking I thing and take it slow. Just having a cuppa then will be off to the sewing room to give it a go

Oh, go on then, I'll join in too - a bit late to the party though that's nothing new!
Why do I seem to always pick patterns with lots of pieces to cut out?
This pattern will be short sleeved for a change, as I always make long or sleeveless tops.  I'm kinda assuming I can just chop off the sleeves to a suitable length, but I've left them a bit longer than needed to start with.  I'm doing view B, but with the collar from view C/D - probably!  Couldn't decide whether to include some pieces of the flowery fabric, but decided to just do the plain blue for a change.

And I think I've used around 2 metres.

See I find them horrible to do on the overlocker I would much rather do them on the machine, but I have managed both sleeves with no tears or tantrums so feeling very pleased with myself and it is a much nicer finish I really ought to persevere with it

Top all but finished just need the hems doing and for that I will need to rethread the machine so having a little break I should really do some housework - or maybe not

That would be easier but this pattern has the front seams at the front the back is cut on the bias and is wider than the front so comes around to the front - if that makes sense - so you couldn't do them like that

Well it didn't take hardly any time to sort the pattern out I think it's very similar to the Barb pants from style arc which I have mad loads of times, and in fact have a pair on today so I cut into som navy blu ponte I have had for it seems forever and just have the waistband to do and the hems to turn up

I like the pockets and the slightly forward side seams but they are a narrower at the ankle than the barb

2nd Blouse from the same pattern as the 1st  but the version with the pleats and full collar lengthened 2" again and short sleeves rather than cap 2nd time I've used the automatic button hole feature on my new machine love ..love ..love it.. 7 button holes in 3/4 minutes  didn't use the button sewing on feature as the buttons are mother of pearl and I was a bit concerned they would snap

Why do I pick patterns with very curved seams?  They do seem to have turned out ok though.  The disappointing thing is that I don't seem to have lined up the pattern with the grain for some reason  :[ - ah, well, no one else will notice!
Disappointingly, I'm not sure it's really big enough, having pinned it on Dolly, although it may fit a bit different on me, as Dolly's boobies are lower than mine - the wonder of underwiring  :)
Left for now, I'll pin it on me in the morning and decide if I need to let in a side panel to make it the looser fit I prefer, I don't want it clinging to my lumps and bumps. :P

Well my top is finished, but so many things went wrong  :(

There was the pattern piece which I lost and had to re-draw.
Managed to snip into the neckband so had to recut it.
Bottom of neckband wouldn't lie properly so I ended up appliqueing the tab instead of using it to bind the ends/
Neckband was obscenely low, had to stitch it closed for several inches and it still shows a camisole underneath.
The whole thing was far too big so took in the sides.
Tried to shorten shoulder seam but that messed up the sleeve heads so I recut the sleeves (one piece instead of two).
Got the sleeves in again OK (used the overlocker both times) then coverstitched the hems and again managed to snip into the fabric whilst trimming so shortened them a bit and re-did.

It's wearable but I don't think I'll be using that pattern again.

These are the pattern pieces for my top. As it's only got one facing it is simple to sew.  The self facing of the cowl neck is attached to the back facing at the shoulders.

Mint green lycra has been in the stash for a year or so along with some pink and green lace, green strap elastic and various bits and bobs including the hardware.

Had to order the plush elastic recently and although it's too blue that shouldn't matter as only the loops will show on the right side, likewise the channelling, but I might try simmering the hook & eye closure with onion skins (which dye yellow) although it probably won't have much effect as it's probably polyester; nylon might take a bit of colour.

Couldn't get any strong powermesh in the right colour so I've cut the wings double and I've underlined the cups and frame pieces.

I'm using the Marlborough bra pattern (https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/264659671/digital-lingerie-sewing-pattern-esme?ref=related-1) and Esme knickers pattern (https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/264659671/digital-lingerie-sewing-pattern-esme?ref=related-1).

Decided against a collar and put a binding round the neck - now that's something I've never done before, so it was a case of "bodge it and scarper"  :D
Looks better on me than on Dolly I think, but not sure I'll be sewing that pattern again, it's so fiddly with those very curved seams.  It's just gone in the washing machine to "settle" it down, as it feels like it has a lot of lycra so may not take to ironing!
It's probably one I'll wear around the house and grow to like.

I like it , think it would look great colour blocked if you like that sort of thing

I'm struggling with my top I knew there was a reason I didn't particularly like Butterick patterns. It doesn't look like I thought it would I thought the darts finished above the hem so giving a sort of flounce effect but they don't they go all the way down gives it a nice shape but not what I thought it was from the pattern envelope. I'm struggling with sleeves there seems to be a huge amount to ease in they look as if they could end up a bit "puffy" which I don't like so I'm going to walk away from it and go back later to try again

I have dug out a piece of fabric from the deep dark recess of my stash. Not sure when i got it or why as it not my usual choice. It is plain burgundy? suiting of some type. I can only assume it was left over from when i had to be "suited and booted" for work (about 10 years ago).
:trousers: I think i am going to use it to make a pair of trousers, again not something i normally wear, just as an experiment to see how they turn out. Who know i may become a convert to trouser wearing.
Will post photos when i have looked through my patterns.

You mean there's other things to wear than trousers?  Oh, yes, I know, shorts  :P
I think I own one tatty old skirt for if it's very very hot in the garden - comes out the wardrobe about once a year...

Right.  A summer/spring dress, in that lovely white stretch cotton with green rose print, sitting in stash for about 3 years now.  I got it from the Textile Centre after buying my lovely parrot print and rose panel prints, but it's been waiting for the right time. Lynn Mizono dress, V1312 mark 2.  I love this one!  It will be paired with one of the jersy options for the bodice:
The green stripe jersey was a bargain from the markets a year or 2 back, and the bobbly textured poly jersey is also an old market haul.  I've used some of it previously, but never wear the garments...
There's also [not pictured] some plain white poly jersey, smoother textured than the bobbly.
What isn't used for the dress will go together for another pieced top, Butterick 6287 which I made in the New Year and wear all the time.

Quick post of my preparation this morning.
Some blue jersey (looks like denim) for DGD4.

ad some crepe de chine (polyester) for me, this is one of the oldest fabrics in my stash.
I had to be careful when I cut it out as it had some snags in it. I wonder who did that?  :meow:  actually, I haven't had cats for about 5 years now so this fabric goes back further than that.

I tried starching the fabric but it didn't take, its just gone powdery  :[  I cut it out with a layer of tissue underneath that stops a lot of the slipperiness.

Vegegrow You're getting thing made really quickly. Shirts with pleats, collars and buttonholes! What machine do you have?

Brenda Sorry to read your top gave you so much trouble, it looks so petty I would never have guessed. The undies look so complicated to make, I've never tried making those.

Bodgeit I hope your more happy with your top once it has been through the wash! Well executed seams

Didi I'm sure every time a sign in I see that you've made something new.

Goth Those sleeves look very flouncy. What pattern is it?

DF I am green with jealousy! I wish I could wear emeralds. I'm planning on making the Lynn Mizono dress, but in black.

Catllar Ah! I think it is something to do with the shiny fabric - thanks.

Fabric used - 1.7m

No sewing for me today it's been a long day in work and to top it all off I have left a load of paperwork I should have been taking into the university tomorrow on my desk along with my umberella !!

I did get on with the top yesterday evening, still have the hems to do. Not sure about it at all it just doesn't "feel right" around the arms but I will see how I get on with it once it's finished. I actually quite like the shape of it but I think it's one of those patterns that is going to need a lot of adjusting to get the right fit

This is my first make for the Stash Sewalong. It's just a simple, easy pair of P.J bottoms for my daughter.

I've had the fabric a couple of years or so. It is a 2.5 metre piece of cotton checked fabric which I received when I purchased a vintage sewing pattern off ebay.

Have had the time today to cut them out and roughly stitch them together. It's only one pattern piece, so really quick and easy. It took longer to ensure I'd got my checks matching than it did to cut out... I'm currently waiting for my daughter to try them for size so I can make any adjustments.

About 0.75m lycra, a length of lace, 1m bra strap elastic and some bits of hardware used from stash.
Other elastics bought for project.

Difficult to photograph but here is my second bra and knicker entry.

I probably won't get much sewing done in the next couple of days, so time to think about all that's still left in stash.

Thanks Pinkstar. It's the only Naughty Bobbin pattern I have made. This one is certainly very quick and easy to make as there is no neckline to finish. It's structure is quite unusual. You cut two fronts, stitch them together down the centre front , then open them out. So each side is a full front, folded in half. The front extends round the back of the neck to form a kind of collar.

I can't really comment on the fit because I used the neckline from the Presto top pattern and grafted it on to my TNT knit top. The comments on Patter Review are all positive. Here is the link to it.

Number 3 cut out.  New Look 6808, very easy tunic style.

A bit of an experiment here as I've cut this pattern in a knit, and it is for a woven.  The fabric isn't showing up well but it's a cream knit, with a silver metallic thread running through it, so very sparkly.  It's been in the stash forever, so it's time it was used.  Also, after the last two fiascos, I need some instant gratification.  ;)

Buttonholes to finish on number 2 blouse, and some hand sewing.

Off I go!

So here is the dress nearing completion.  I still have to do some sort of ribbon thing around the middle and buttons on the back.  I think it was Jessie who mentioned pin tucks hence the length of the dress.  I have never done them but have a tuckmarker so quite fancied trying it.  I haven't measured how much I need to to take it up by, but I think it is a few inches.  I am only wanting the grey border to peek through at the bottom so might need to cut it.

So cute! I'm guessing it has some sort of opening at the back due to the neck size? I'd love to see it if it has a little button closure or something  0_0

Here is the length I would like it to be.  Instead of pin tucks it might be quite nice to have a bubble hem so it doesn't look quite so victorian, but not sure if that can be done on an unlined skirt, so might have to stick to pin tucks.

Any advise on either option would be very welcome.

I suggested pin tucks but if your not happy you can take a big tuck on the inside  and either trim off or leave and cover seam with a lace trim/ ribbon or topstich with a decorative stitch so it looks like it should be there...( you can always do the stitch elsewhere to tie the decoration to the rest of the dress
Title: Re: Official Stash Sewalong Competition

I think I probably have made the dress too long for pin tucks and they need to be bigger.  This was what I had in mind but not sure I would like it now.  https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/5e/1a/44/5e1a44f6ec3b5522a824bfb5a4ad251f.jpg.  Is that what you mean vegegrow?  Would the lace trim be on the inside but top stitch would show just above the tuck on the outside.

I just found this image for a lace trim  http://historicalsewing.com/why-sewing-trim-to-the-back-of-a-hem-is-a-good-thing.  That is kind of what I was wanting with the grey, but lace would look nicer.  Pity is I don't have any grey lace.  I will have to rethink what I want.  Too many options.  I am still interested in the bubble hem but just don't know if it works with an unlined skirt.

No I meant the lace  and the topstich were alternatives to hide the seamline  if you shortened the dress with a large tuck on the inside
if you decide to pintuck the tucks can be whatever size you like you could do a couple of narrow ones then a wider one

Managed to get my daughter to try her P.J bottoms on today when she returned from school.
I'd cut them to the largest size...she wants them to be roomy and comfortable, and I can always take them in a bit if they've turned out too large.

They're such a simple make, so taking them in is easy.

I guessed her waist size and very roughly run some elastic...(Elastic from my stash!)... through a safety-pinned casing.

She doesn't mind the size at the tops of the legs and around her bottom, but I need to take the legs in a bit at the knee down to the hem. Also, hem is pinned for the length.

Hopefully I'll be able to finish them off tomorrow.

Sandra.

Aaaaargh! When did I start sewing my rocket scientist top? Well, I see I ordered my alien flying saucer buttons on March 12th and I had already started the top when I ordered the buttons so... I can't use that one then. I've just cut out a couple of  other things but they are from new (to me) fabric.... I've not been paying attention, have I?

Well, still time to do the job properly and make something from a suitably marinated stash item. And I might just post a pic of the rocket scientist top when complete anyway as I'm sure you are dying to see the alien flying saucer buttons.  ;)

Glad to finally use this fabric up. I couldn't imagine what else I could have used it for.

Might find the time today to start my shirt.

Just enough of the peach fabric (0.8m) to use it for the main fabric, I have more than enough of the patterned (1 m) for the contrast band and pocket - this is either very dark navy or black based, not sure which. All cut out now, ready for tomorrow afternoon sewing session.   :sew:

Here's my next effort. It's some viscose/lycra jersey which has been languishing in the stash for a year or two. I decided to have a go a the Jalie tie neck top. I was grateful for the video on the 'burrito' construction of the collar. (All of the front and back disappears inside the collar while it's stitched up - second photo). Unfortunately the front was desperately low   =8 and in raising it I had to distort the front slightly. I will know better next time.

Fabric used - 1.7m

Can't decide between these 2 patterns for this material. I must have had the material a good 5 years with the pattern on the left. But the one on the right I only bought this year. Hmm decisions decisions!

It looks like a very textured fabric so keep it plain.  Depends whether you want long or short sleeves as to which pattern you use.

I've dug out a piece of poly satin which I bought at Knitting & Stitching show a couple of years ago, chosen for the colour rather than the fabric :ninja:
I have just cut out New Look 6808 (http://nebula.wsimg.com/obj/OTc0RkI4RjdDM0I3MzdBNDIyNUU6ZTQyMjAxZWE5MzIxYzNiOGQ5NjZlZjVlNzhiYTk3NjA6Ojo6OjA=)

Inspired by the bell sleeves in the Style Advice thread here on TSP I drafted my own semi circular 'cuff' to go onto the ¾ length sleeves.  So far it looks to OK; wait and see!

Well I was going to cut out and start a dress today but I can't find the zip to go with the fabric that I am sure I bought - mind you it was last summer so I may not have so that will have to wait until I can get hold of one. I may cut it out later today as I really wanted it done for a week next Friday as I am going out with work

I used to have my machine behind the sofa, and the beast would love to lie along the back of the sofa, gradually getting closer and closer to the machine. The sofa is now along the wall.

Did manage to get my denim shirt cut out.

The fabric was bought in August last year...I've had the pattern about 6 months longer than that. I'm making view A.

The fabric feels lovely. Really nice quality from Croft Mill.

All pinned and ready to go.

I've cut the sleeves a bit wider. I seem to have a problem with lots of tops and shirts where the sleeves feel too tight, so I checked the tissue fit of the sleeve and cut an extra inch wider in total.

I don't get to do much dressmaking. I like the idea of making things, (and buying fabrics)... but rarely do.

Here I'm sorting out the collar...

The top-stitching looks fairly even, although the collar looks a bit more pointed than I expected. It'll probably be ok when it's on.

Looks ok.... I'll attach my own 'Hand Made by...' label in the back. It makes it look a bit more 'proper'.

I'll look for some buttons in my button box.

Abandoning the horrors of trying to fit trousers for the missus [I swear she is inflating and deflating day by day]...so I've cut out two new tops for myself.
#1 is the Style Arc Daisy 'designer tunic' in a fabulous cupro monksweave fabric from the Italian Textile company on EBay.  I made the missus a GoT inspired tunic in this last summer, and immediately bought some more for myself.  It's super soft, but with an interesting gnarly texture.  It's a soft willow green, very lovely.
#2 is Butterick 6287 in three knits from deep and mid stash, a floral, a stripe, and a weird bubbly knit stuff.  Cheap and cheerful, and no, not like me, as I'm a miserable old bag.

Mine came out a tiny bit wide as I buggered up the binding [can't be doing with those 'turn a narrow hem' finishes.]  I'm broad shouldered though, so don't mind wide necklines

Stash-Buster #3

Loving this Stash Sewalong! It's giving me a bit of much-needed motivation to get some sewing done. Sewing for pleasure instead of just work sewing.

This is a piece of jersey fabric purchased from the lovely 'Jersey Lady' off Birmingham market...(Demented Fairy knows her well.)

I must have bought it a year/18 months ago. The pattern was amongst a job lot bundle of patterns I bought a couple of years ago.
The pattern isn't specifically made to use with jersey fabric, but, no matter.....I'm going to try it anyway. I'll ignore the bust darts and tweak the side seams to fit, and the front hem where it's going to drop a bit longer.

I wear a lot of long sleeve jersey/t-shirt tops, so I'm going to cut this with long sleeves.

It's quite a weighty fabric...pretty sure there's a bit of lycra in it too.

Don't know if the colour's reminding me more of pyjamas/ nightwear...?

Sandra

I've noticed a few people have kindly 'liked' my shirt...Thank you  :)

A top finished for DGD4.

It has leggings to go with it (but these are non-counting as they were cut out before)

The pair of leggings on the left were mad out of left over fabric. I didn't find out until the last minute that the fabric has a flaw in it. (oh well!)

Because it a sewing site and its all about techniques and learning I'm going to take picture of the inside of everything I make. They might only get as far as Flickr but They will be taken. You may find them encouraging because you could do better or you pick may up on the techniques I use. Anyway....

You can see I have used soluble embroidery backing tucked into the hem before cover stitching. This helps prevent stretching and tunnelling. I tack through all layers, sew, then simply pull out the tacking which runs between the two lines of cover stitching.
I also cover stitched around the neckline to try to get the neckline to lay a bit flatter - I didn't help very much.

Leggings  with untidy elastic sewing at the ankle. Next time I will try and improve on this by cutting the elastic 1 inch longer at both ends and marking the required length. That way I will have something to hold onto whilst sewing.

I should also say I am open to all critiques and suggestions.

Sorry girls, I thought I'd put a picture up of my third entry, but no.  So, it's here now.

It's New Look 6808, and meant for a woven, but I thought it would be nice in a knit.....

It's come up a bit big, I didn't stablise the sleeve facing, forgot the vertical darts, and the neck facing keeps pulling up.

Apart from that, it's fine  :(

I started this shirt before March 13th so I can't enter it in the sew along but I thought you might like to see my 'I come in peace earthlings'/'unleash your inner rocket scientist' shirt. The pattern is Kwiksew 4195 which is simple but has a couple of traps for novice sewers (such as not telling you to mitre when you need to mitre). It has a mandarin collar and a peplum. I lengthened the peplum about 4 cm and didn't bother with the side slits. The two fabrics are from Abakhan's Manchester - the craft fabric remnant bins.

The body fabric is a Robert Kaufman I think. Have checked the equations and they appear correct so Houston, we don't have a problem there (after all who wants to wander around wearing dodgy equations :)). The sleeves and other bits are from a lawn weight cotton with astronauts' pics thereon! I know, how could I resist? I managed to find some buttons with an alien emerging from a flying saucer - don't know if you can see those in the second pic. 5 4 3 2 1 we have liftoff!

Oh Jessie, that's the same pattern I used for my latest sewalong creation using the red/pink/purple poly-satin!  Finished it yesterday and have just taken a photo.

Yes, it is meant for wovens.  I've made it up once before and that time I placed the fabric on the diagonal and did a collar.  This time it's the plain neckline which is more boat shaped than I usually prefer but it's OK.

Instead of the ¾ sleeve with the fiddley slit which I did before I drafted a bell shaped cuff - just took the width of the sleeve, drew a rectangle the required length and slashed up to the seam line several times and spread into a semi circle.  That made the seam allowances pleat and should have meant clipping the fabric, but being poly-satin it stretched out enough not to need clipping especially as the seam allowances are overlocked quite close to the actual seam.

In hindsight I think I could have made the cuffs even more flared, but overall I'm quite pleased, and I used up 1.5 metres of fabric.

Post by: BrendaP on March 27, 2017, 11:11:22 AM
Had another look through the stash and found some jersey fabric which I don't remember buying!  It's got 4-thread overlocking along each end so that means it was bought (overlocked and washed) some time after August 2015.  I  think that maybe I bought it at Ally Pally Knitting and stitching that year along with the purple satin in the post above.

So here's my contribution and I really won't have time to make any more for this challenge. I made them in a non stretch woven this time, mistake, They need that tiny bit of stretch to work correctly under the crotch, but they are comfy enough to wear and that's what matters I guess.

Just noticed the sexy slippers   - I bet you're all jealous!

The pattern is supposed to have interfaced facings around the neckline but, as I've done my version in jersey fabric I've simply attached a binding around the neck instead.

I stitched the neckline using a twin-needle...same at the hem and sleeves.

Vogue 9199 is as it says on the packet very easy.  :D  It's princess seams so no darts and no facings either.  The instructions say something about purchased bias binding for the neckline, but I've cut a 2" wide crossways (stretch direction) strip and doing it like most tee shirt necks.  Only the hems to do now.

All cut out.  DD's Easter dress.  I really hope she likes this, as I think it will be a comfortable one for work, and I can make a couple sleeveless for the summer time.  I've had the fabric for several years - same batch as the white sweater, so it needs using up.

Here's a version of Vogue 1410 - the Lynn Mizono dress. I'm not officially entering this but just sewing along with you as the fabric is only about 5 weeks in the stash - it's a lovely, quite lightweight brushed cotton which I got for £6 for 3 1/2m from a charity shop in Hay-on Wye. I've added sleeves as I don't wear pinafore dresses or sleeveless dresses. I've also added in-seam pockets. I've made the neck smaller and added a neck facing. I moved the front tucks a couple of times - not a great idea! I've put them closer together as otherwise the dress might got a bit tight when the drawstring was pulled up. I like the bubble effect of the hem - achieved by a couple of buttonholes just by the  bottom of each seam and strategically placed buttons inside the seam, further up. I actually added buttons and buttonholes in the centre an back front but the hem stays in place without using these.

(Ahem - ignore the junk round about... a sign of creativity, honest!!)

This really is a stash buster. I bought the pattern and fabric together when I restarted Sewing in 2013, so it's about time I did something with it.

Hi, I have made this jacket, it does go together really well but it does make up on the large side. I posted a pic of my finished jacket under "Finished at last" in The Wardrobe section.

Just had an idea how I can alter Vogue 1410 to put a couple of asymmetric pattern pieces across the bottom - got an idea from a dress I saw in Sahara- a lovely shop but too expensive for me! Might be a bit beyond my creative skills - will let you know.  This is the one I mean. https://saharalondon.com/stripe-dress-black (https://saharalondon.com/stripe-dress-black)

Finally getting round to finishing off my first Stash Sewalong attempt now that I'm home.  I had been having some issues with it, the pattern turned out to be huge and I hadn't made it before - using this as a wearable toile. After taking it in significantly, the other factor of dissatisfaction is that the bottom band seems to need more weight to it.  I'm considering whether to either put a facing on the bottom, or to cut another lower band, front and back.  Or maybe hem with bias binding? Will try the sleeves first while I mull it over.

lol I have made many things from curtains when I was doing my theatrical thing, and now the steampunking involves LOTS of re-purposed stuff.  It's quite the thing to happily brag about how your entire outfit has been made from an Ikea bedspread and a small aubergine...

Mind you, this curtain IS silk so it's not as cheap and cheerful as it sounds!

I think I've got time to make a 4th item....hopefully.

The fabric is a lovely stretch cotton sateen, bought from Birmingham Rag market sometime before Christmas.

I've had the pattern for a couple of years.

This is going to be made for my daughter. I showed her the fabric and a selection of four patterns to choose from. She liked this one but not how low the V back is, so I cut a toile for her to try with a higher cut back but with the original depth of the V chalked for her to see.

(She's going to be annoyed if she sees I've added this photo.)
She's decided she likes the V after all, so I'm going to be able to cut it to the original. She tried this with her t-shirt on underneath so it looks a worse fit than it is.
I needed to cut the bodice wider, and she said she'd like it cut an inch longer. The skirt is being cut 3 inches longer. She doesn't want her knees on display.

This is Cronky  :meow:
She likes fabric to sit on.

I'm going to line the dress....Lining fabric also from my stash

Have made the bodice up on the dress and lined it. Did a check on the fit, but my daughter was a bit too 'busy' to spare me the time to properly try it so I had to be quick.

It looked OK, ( I think), so I carried on and inserted the sleeves.

I've pinned the skirt to the bodice and hope I'll have time later to attach it properly.

I'm optimistic I might get a proper photo of her wearing it when it's finished  -< , but she's a teenager so you can never be sure.

Just to let you all know I've had four entries so far via email.

Please please please do continue to send your entries in ahead of the date. If you plan to sew more things, you don't need to send them all at once. For example DementedFairy has sent me her entries "so far".

It's a great help to receive these entries once completed as it means I can begin to get them uploaded rather than having to upload and edit many many entries at once when the competition closes!

Here's Vogue 1246, a Lynn Mizono kimono style top which is far from finished but I think it will turn out OK. Can't enter it for the Stashalong, as the fabric has only been in the stash for about 6 weeks! The fabric is a fine cotton with a moderately loose weave  got from a charity shop for a fiver for 3 yards or so - but it does sew quite well. The pattern is simple once you work out whether a tie is meant to be on the inside or the outside of the top. I couldn't be bothered making all the fiddly ties - it ties like a dressing gown so I improvised.

While I was pondering the tie question my eye alighted on 5m of black jumbo ric-rac which I must have purchased for some project or other - anyway it has a new life as a set of ties. Probably not visible in the pic but seems to work OK! I think I'll put some snap fasteners on the top bit as well.

Oh, dear.... :'(

I think I'm done here. My daughter tried the red dress on.

'This looks vile!' She said with a face a bit like this

The bodice is quite a nice shape on her...the 'v' back looks lovely.... but the skirt did nothing for her. It makes her look twice as wide as she is. ( She's a plus-sized girl)
I asked her if she would like me to adjust the shape of the skirt to see if that would help, but she's not going to change her opinion of the dress.

I made her a dress last year from a vintage pattern which had a wide skirt. We even poofed it out more with a petticoat and she looked absolutely gorgeous in it....but the shape of this one's not working on her.

I'm going to have to leave this as a UFO until I can decide what to do with it.

A top made from 2 sarong type scarves... bought because I loved the fabric  mumble mumble years ago... wince..
should be a useful summer top... altered the sleeves so they were a combination of the cold shoulder and the cap... being pale and freckly I don't need to expose my shoulders and arms
Stash used scarves were about 60" wide and a about a metre each

Trying to catch up... this was made last week.. a bit Abigail's party I had to gather the front because it was to short to recut .. I'm thinking it might be good for one of the wedding party's this year the Indian wedding may require 3 outfits
I liked the fabric and made it up with an Ivory lining... Had comments (help) from DH and DD  I was about to abandon and DH said it was a better colour where the fabric was 2 layers it was then decided it should have a darker lining pic1 so it was stripped out and remade.. still not 100% convinced but its a lot better and may have an outing... it was also a good toile for the pattern Burda6949  https://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/burda/6949/6949.jpg .. Its a combination of the long dress with the tunic sleeves... Stash used  7.3 metres ... (2 LININGS)

That's a shame because from the pattern sleeve illustration, the skirt looks lovely.  There is seemingly no incentive to finish a dress intended for someone else, but another person will love it.  :flower:

I nearly finished my Edwardian blouse-from-a-curtain last night, but fortunately stopped before stitching the GINORMOUS sleeve in...cos it was backwards.  Sigh.
It will be a quick finish today once I get cracking, then I've got the full Edwardian Dominatrix outfit cut out ready to sew.  That's not a stash buster though.
Wonder what else I can churn out during my easter break...

Its the law you know...
to put in/on a sleeve or cuff backwards
to Iron the interfacing on to the right side
to stitch an huge seam with the bobbin empty...
to make 7 buttonholes and only have 6 buttons...
to sew the buttonholes on a mans shirt onto the wrong side

Add more here

One of these things has to happen when you sew something :*

Vegegrow...The empty bobbin thing gets me.

It's usually when you've spent ages carefully pinning heaps of fullness, say a sleeve into an armhole or a gathered skirt onto a waist...you only notice when you get to the last couple of inches  >:)

I returned to the red dress which I'd intended to make for my daughter. I left it overnight to think what to do, and the next morning I tried it on for myself.
It looked a lot less awful on me than it did on her, so I pinned the sides in to alter it.

I managed to finish it yesterday evening. I just need to press it and I might see if my daughter will take some pictures of me in it...I'll see what I look like...otherwise I'll have to leave it on Millicent.

I couldn't bear it hanging around as a UFO. I was geared up to make it.... The overlocker was threaded up in red!

I looked out the magazine the pattern came with and TBH, it doesn't look especially nice on their model either.  -<

I'm out of patience asking my daughter if she'd take a photo of me in the red dress, so I've taken Millicent into the garden and photographed it myself.
My daughter doesn't feel she can be bothered to get up from the settee... >:)

I've used 2.3m of fabric and approx 2 metres of lining. I found several scraps of red lining in my stash...I didn't line the sleeves.

The colour doesn't seem to have photographed very accurately. It's actually a proper 'Christmassy' red. It's looking a bit cerise on my screen.

Finished at last. Didn't have as much fabric as i thought so rummaged around in my bits box and found 2 long strips. Had to improvise with pattern. Cut panels out slightly smaller on the l shaped piece of fabric and then inserted 2 extra panels at the side front/back. In affect this means there is no side seam so then had to move zip into the back.

I finished my top.
This fabric was a b^&&3r from start to finish, just pinning it I had to use the fine bridal pins as nothing else would go through it properly, even then I struggled with the bridal pins.
Cutting it, the only way I can describe it was, the fabric was bouncy.
Sewing  it, On an ordinary machine (and I tried 2 different ones) there were skipped stitches and holes pulled in the fabric. Thank god for my overlocker, it stitched it like a dream otherwise it would have ended up in the bin.
Here it is on a headless me.

Thanks DF! I saw a pattern for it, think it was Mcalls possibly but I thought I didn't need a pattern as it just needs the hanger to shape the top of it with a seam allowance. They have been popular!

Serge a seam  with the knife activated and catch the rest of the fabric in it when you have no more left to cut another piece.

One of these things has to happen when you sew something :*

I could also add, related to that:  snipping off the final thread and making a neat V-shaped hole in a prominent place on the finished garment

Washing a newly made garment with a red or blue sock and ruining it...

OK guys.  Hands up, I have to throw the towel in on this SewAlong.  I started off briskly, and made a couple of blouses (and some trousers, though not from stash), but they are still unfinished.

Unfortunately, we have the Billinge Easter Olympics being held on Sunday, and Easter Bunnies are very necessary, and must take priority.  ;)

My apologies to all of you, and I'm sure there will be a worthy winner.  I will however, be finishing my blouses in due course, and will display them in the gallery.

I also want to offer my thanks all participating in this SewAlong for helping to re-ignite my mojo.

Cheering you all on very loudly!!

Jessie

I have loved seeing the items but never quite got started myself. I was caught up keeping on top of the project for my class and just never got going. Oh well I will try again.

OK this is the last one, a quick and easy jersey dress that i have made loads of time. It takes about 1 1/2 hours start to finish on the overlocker. So easy just to throw on for walking the dogs, hence the addition of pockets to the front, you have to have some were to put the roll of poo bags  :woof:
Stash now down by about 4-5 metres so can now order some more without feeling guilty. :)
Now i really must get round to the ironing before it takes over the house.

Love your top Pinkstar....

though it does look like it would be a bugger to sew...
What  is  that material ?????

It looks like tree bark or leaves or something...
Still I wouldn't mind having that in my wardrobe if you want rid!

Really interesting!

Thanks, I think its some sort of stretch viscose.  I can't remember where I got it from, possibly Boyes as I bought it a good 5 years ago.

There's not much left about 60cm which you are welcome to have, if you like.

My entry isn't happening cos its partly unpicked - I decided it isn't big enough so it will have a strip inserted up the side and down the sleeves, which are also too tight.   :(

Received a flurry of entries last night, so will be putting them together over the course of today and this evening ready for voting.

It's likely that voting will open tomorrow morning as I don't think I'll get them all done tonight. So keep a watch out for the new voting forum that will pop up tomorrow (it's hidden at the moment).  0_0

You can! Quilting is sewing!

You just can't make garments  ;) But I will have you convinced one day.

(Or actually, because I categorically cannot quilt, I will just let you get on with it  0_0)

Lol, you can still have it if you want it, it wouldn't be any good for quilting, but would be fine for applique work.

Oh dear, can you send me your email again? Maybe I didn't receive it :(

Try my personal email franchaselden@gmail.com

Naughty corner announcement though, I have noticed some double votes. I'm not sure whether people have done this while they "decide" until the date, but just in case, please do remember to "unlike" so you only have ONE vote because if you have more than two, I'll have to cancel both your votes.

I'm torn between three, so I'm taking my time before I cast my vote.

This is like choosing your favourite child although if Sandra promises to give me her coat, she'll have my vote.

I assume this is a typo..... :meow:....?
Cronky's a lovely looking cat but she's a disappointment in every other way...not very 'cat'-like. She doesn't like to be stroked/picked up/sat near to....I don't think she likes people very much.

My son thinks she could be an alien wearing a (very realistic) cat onesie, and she doesn't like to be touched in case we feel the zipper.

Sandra.
