In the wardrobe / Today's daft mistake
« on: August 21, 2020, 11:39:16 AM »
Decided to start making up a pair of trousers which I cut out aaages ago, not really feeling in the mood but thought it would kick-start my mojo which has been absent for a while now.

Well, I only went and edge-stitched both pairs of pockets together, then stitched them onto the front of the trousers. Can't comprehend how it happened, how many pockets have I stitched into garments??   :headbang:

Don't know whether to laugh or cry so I've left it for now, made a cuppa and then will get ready to go out  :)

Technical Help / Sleeve confusion
« on: June 20, 2020, 12:16:33 PM »
I need advice and guidance please.

I'm setting in sleeves on a dress, gathering at the sleeve head. Now, I always thought that once this was done, the sleeve head would magically smooth out and would not be wrinkled. But, I cannot fathom how to set the sleeve in without some wrinkles showing.

What is the right way?

Patterns Discussion / How much?!
« on: June 10, 2020, 10:25:56 AM »
Just received an email from TATB introducing their latest pattern - pyjama bottoms/shorts, where they're asking 12 quid for the printed pattern or over 8 quid for the PDF. WTF  :faints:

Fun with Fabric / A sort-of patchwork make
« on: June 03, 2020, 17:01:11 PM »
I wanted another apron for the kitchen but I didn't want to use any of my fabric pieces as they're a bit too good really, I'm saving them for garments.

Looking around my stash, I dug deep and found a few pairs of denim jeans from my OH and my friend's DH - she gave them I didn't steal them  :P

I tried chopping them up and stitching large pieces together but it just wasn't working so I came up with the idea of patchworking and stitching them onto a backing piece of left-over moths and butterflies print. I used two back pockets instead of the standard apron pocket and used a few Aldi FQ's for the binding.

What do you think? Although, maybe I don't want to know.....

Technical Help / Collars and waistbands
« on: May 23, 2020, 15:56:42 PM »
This happens every time I turn over a collar or a waistband but for some unknown to me reason I have such a short memory that I go blindly into it on each garment.

I'm making a shirt with a grand-dad collar, so requires stitching two identical collar pieces together, pressing a fold on the outer edge of the outer collar, stitching the inner collar onto the shirt and turning over to the right side.

So, now I have to stitch in the ditch on the outside and hope to God and all that is holy that the pressed edge is sufficient to cover the raw edges. It isn't. It never is  :faints:

Who can give me a top tip on overcoming this as, like I said, it happens every time....

I have a couple of ideas but these involve starting from scratch and cutting out new pieces. Hoping to avoid that

Patterns Discussion / Precious patterns
« on: May 17, 2020, 13:54:15 PM »
Every so often I have a clear-out of my patterns, and either offer them to the one sewist friend I have, offer them up on here or donate to charity. I have quite a few as I receive some with my monthly sewing mag.

Realistically I stick to about 10 patterns that are old faithfulls and cover all garments I need to make. The rest are, quite frankly, a waste of money  :faints:

How many garment patterns do you have that you would save in a fire, and how many could burn, baby burn?  0_0

apologies to anyone who thought this was the name of pattern manufacturer's

In the wardrobe / The Rushcutter hack
« on: March 04, 2020, 12:52:26 PM »
I've finished my dress - In the Folds Rushcutter Dress - which I've turned into a coat  :)

I made it up as normal, omitting the zip in the back then sliced it up the front, bias bound the edges, et voilà.

The fabric is a beautifully drapey viscose purchased last year with the intention of entering the Florals comp but couldn't decide what to use it for. The bias binding is from a pillowcase.

In the wardrobe / A pair of trousers
« on: February 24, 2020, 15:15:54 PM »
I've finished my Darlow Pants, an In the Folds pattern. They're in pale grey (!) linen, the exclamation is because I have NO grey in my wardrobe, tis verging on yuk as I'm aware that to avoid looking too much like a childrens TV presenter it's best not to go too vibrant where the trouser's are concerned  :) I'm hoping they'll be a good companion for many different coloured tops.

My next idea is another In the Folds pattern, the Rushcutter Dress, but I'm going to totally change it. If it works I'll show pics  ;)

In the wardrobe / Stash-bustin robe
« on: February 17, 2020, 15:52:39 PM »
Sorting through my stash I realised just how much fabric I have bought just because it was cheap or discounted with no real thought as to how it would be used. So I picked out two large pieces, just big enough to put together and make one garment from. They're both very lightweight, unsuitable for outer garments so I made another robe, perfect for slipping on over pj's and for everyday wear. It's made a bit of a dent in the pile but it will get lots of use, better than languishing til who knows when.

Tech Know How / Profile problem
« on: February 16, 2020, 11:12:13 AM »
I've tried to change my profile info this morning, the photo mainly but when I go to update the changes a screen flashes up saying the site can't be reached. I can get onto the site, however, hence being able to post this message. What am I doing wrong?!

In the wardrobe / Hacked SA Adeline
« on: February 13, 2020, 15:09:46 PM »
Another SA Adeline dress shortened in length with a round neck rather than a V neck. Has everybody got one pattern that makes them wish they hadn't spent ££££'s on buying all the others that are hardly used?

Don't know what the fabric is, it's a remnant from Croft Mill purchased last year, but it was awkward to work with. It has a slight stretch but not enough to make me want to tear my hair out. It is quite heavy and hangs really nicely.

I stitched buttons on the pockets purely for cosmetic value, oh and the pockets are skew-wiff, of course, tis moi  :P

Your Favourite Suppliers / Ironing help
« on: February 08, 2020, 12:27:13 PM »
This might not be the right place for this.....

I'm seriously considering buying a sleeve board for the ironing board as I'm sick of grappling with the not-at-all-narrow narrow end of my ironing board.

Any ideas or recommendations of said item? Or anybody got one and regretted it? Or any ideas for an alternative thing?

Thanks  :)

House Beautiful / Hanging pods
« on: February 08, 2020, 12:18:44 PM »
These are the hanging pods I've completed for the bathroom. The outer is a cotton left over from cushion covers, bought online from a site that's no longer operational, plus I can't remember the name  >< The inner is remainder of a cotton lawn from Dragonfly Fab's and the hanging loop is cotton ribbon from Ray Stitch.
