Dolls and Toys / Pattern Draft
« on: January 21, 2021, 20:13:33 PM »
Asking for a bit of advice please. I have drafted a pattern for a gonk/ gnome and wondered if anyone here knew where in the UK I might find someone to take my drawings/ measurements and transfer them to a pdf file so I can use it as cutting instructions for my pattern? The pattern only comprises 5 simple shapes.
I know about Adobe Illustrator but this pattern will be a one off for me and the cost would be prohibitive.
Many thanks for your time
Trudi

I've made the exact same ones and used kids puffy paint on the soles as I was scared of slipping on the laminate.
If I made them again I might try dots of glue from my glue gun!

Sewing Machines / Singer 99k
« on: September 16, 2018, 13:18:23 PM »
Hi, I have just bought myself a 1934 Singer 99k from eBay really cheaply with the intention of having it as an eye catcher on my table at craft fairs. Would anyone know if there is a Vintage Singer machine forum anywhere, Google doesn't seem to be much help and I am hoping your collective brains can do better  <3

Fun with Fabric / Re: Vinyl help please
« on: September 15, 2018, 12:24:00 PM »
I've only used vinyl once to make a sheaf for 1 of my really good kitchen knives, it was self backed with some kind of knitted fabric. I found it was easy to use but I did use a rolling foot, the kind you use on leather in case it walked if that's any help.
Thanks Surest1tch, I have a waking foot and a roller foot so I will be OK for that I don't think the stuff you used would be thin enough for me as this black fabric is super thin, someone has suggested PUL so I'm going to try for a sample of that.
Fingers crossed.

@Lizzielogs I've made similar purses with vinyl used like this - I think I may have cut up a clear plastic folder, but I have other vinyl/plastic items at home like cd sleeves, the plastic envelopes that sheets and duvet covers come in (I keep anything like that). I wouldn't buy anything specially - you'll probably find something suitable in the house. I use a walking foot or teflon foot - or a roller foot as Surestitch said.

Thank you Vezelay what I need is the black stuff not the clear as I have plenty of that - do you have any ideas for the other type?

Fun with Fabric / Vinyl help please

I wonder if anyone could give me a bit of advice on vinyl/ PVC please. I have been asked to re create a purse like the one in the photo.
The vinyl seems very thin and is only sewn to the tops of the card slots and through the centre on the fold, it is backed with a type of strong nylon feeling fabric which I am not too bothered about as I could substitute cotton fabric.
What is your advice for the vinyl? I have looked online and have seen a 'dressmaking' weight but can't seem to see anywhere I can buy a sample (not even eBay) all I can buy is a metre length which I am very reluctant to do in case it's not what I need.
Can you help at all please?

I have 2 yards of each

Oooh, thank you so much for digging them out unfortunately I only need a FQ and the light one is too pale for a purse and the other would be lost as I only need it for the interior card slots. Sosorry you had to go toall that trouble. Now you have themout perhaps it may be their time to be made up!

I ordered a couple of batiks when doing the cushion swap and they were lovely sturdy stuff. Double sided as well. I don't know if that's true of them all but it probably is due to the dying process.
Some of them can be really crisp and clear and some tend towards sludge. Keep that in mind when you're choosing and good luck.  :)

Thank you, a lot say they are suitable for quilting, craft and bagmaking so I was going to give one a go - did you pre wash Wrenkins??

Batik is the way colour is applied to a fabric using a wax resist.
https://www.dharmatrading.com/techniques/batik-instructions.html

Usually, but not always, it is used on a cotton base fabric with a closer weave than that of regular craft weight/P&Q fabric

Thank you, I knew the process from school days but was unsure if the word 'batik' had another meaning relative to the weight of the fabric.

Fun with Fabric / Advice please......

I have to make a purse for someone and she has given me a list of likes - one of which is 'paint splatter' - I make purses from quilting weight cotton and have been looking for a FQ of said fabric and coming up with a big fat zero - plenty in the US but not here it seems.
Anyway I have come across a lot of what's described on eBay as "Hand Dyed Colourful 100% Cotton Batik Summer Dressmaking Craft Fabric", in this instance what does 'batik' mean, is it a term for the colour technique or can it be a term to also describe the weight of the fabric 'cos I have a feeling this is going to be thin floaty cotton which is what I don't want!!
Could someone help please?
Thanks everso

Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: To hoop or not to hoop?

The Splurgess has a whole Heirloom section of stitches (Its actually called that!!) but I have no idea why or what they are for ?????

Thank you for butting into this one Celia, you do know you are going to be in hot demand on The Sewing Place don't you ??? So keep your eyes peeled for any callouts @Celia ....

I have Elvis, a Brother 450E that was an offer too good to refuse + software PES Plus ... which you would ythink is the full package but Oh No! Plus = Lite!!!!

I've only really done labels with him so far but have grand ambitions but am finding the software hard to fathom (no proper tuts) but he does stitch beautifully when I finally get him going .....

Nice stitching from Elvis Immi - I have to fight getting involved with embroidery as there are not enough hours in the day for me as it is and another thing to learn/ machine to buy would be JUST a step too far!
I only want to use the lettering for a rude sampler I want to make for a mate!
