Vintage Machines / Kids and theTavaro Elna (1940s grasshopper)
« on: March 20, 2017, 14:08:19 PM »
Hi all,

A while back I got a Tavaro Elna and it's a really early one, they're super cute but the paint was falling off it in places and really rough in others, so I ended up cleaning it back to the aluminium in areas to make it useable.

The belt on it is a bit loose but it goes and is a lovely little machine.

My 5yo son has been asking to learn to sew for a while but I hadn't quite found a route in for him... but then  8) (no lightbulb) I thought we'd try the Elna.

It's very ideal for a little person, it's small, has a knee controller so he can sit at a table on a higher chair and reach it, even the slippy belt, as it slips at higher speeds, so prevented racing... It also made him be gentle with the controller. He could reach the balance wheel, the reverse switch and the presser foot lever.

He decided to make a little pouch for his sister for when she loses her teeth :) he was really pleased with it and so was she!

It's a bit wonky, and one of the seams is beautifully curved and it's all bit unfinished... but he did great :)

Lillian's sweetie tin makes me want to build a magnetic altoids pin tin! :)

I'll have to think on that ;)

I use a little tupperware and a slightly rolled letter from the council saying how much my council tax is going up by... the paper is to catch pins and needles when I'm using and the then tip them into the tupperware at the end... it's an expensive solution but one I'm willing to pay for ;) (I put the saving towards the council tax...)

I've heard of magnetic ones that sound like a great idea, they stick to the magnet rather than being stuck into it.

Vintage Machines / Re: The unexpected Bernina Nova

Hi All,
Sorry I've been delayed on responding (my PC finally got fixed and well Witcher 3 ;). )

The 900 is a full size, it really does have the beautiful motion you expect from a bernina, it's smooth, quiet and very stylish!

It took a serious cleaning it had the worst dust bunnies ever, not to mention the obligatory thread in strange places.

Last thing is to test the sewing!

In the meantime here are some pics inside and out.

Courses & Classes / Favourite Craftsy Courses/tutors?
« on: March 10, 2017, 11:56:49 AM »
Hi!
I was wondering what are your favourite craftsy courses or your favourite tutors?

If hope this will give people a place to start when considering a new course or looking for something new. I'm also not much of user myself and find the lists of courses a bit overwhelming.

Thank you,

Thanks all! It is a cute machine, the red and white are very striking. First impressions are that the case has taken some use, the handle has too and is quite scratched, the machine is in great condition but looks to have been well used and never cleaned, I got some serious dust bunnies out of the bobbin case without much effort! The motion is stiff, but every thing probably just needs a good oil and a clean.

I'm not sure what it is about bernina's but they seem prone to thread in funny places. The 530 thread that had formed a knot in the race, this one had a knot around the part the bobbin case clips into.

I was really relieved to see a bobbin case! :)

Tomorrow night might be cleaning and photos night!

Hi Iminei,

How's does this thing work? Is it only applicable to Janome machines or is it usuable on anything with a standard shank?

Thanks

Roger

Put her flag every 3rd and make it part of a pattern.

That's just what I was going to suggest...

I was waiting for 'that sounds like a boy solution... all it needs is some impact adhesive...'  -< ;)

Put her flag every 3rd and make it part of a pattern... tbh unless people are very close to the bunting they are unlikely to notice I should think, but adding the different flag every 3rd should make it look like a pattern rather than a manufacturing error :)

I have a 530 that is rather lovely and has a nice personality. How are you getting on with your 135?

I'm wondering what this 900, going to be like. I'd like to get on with it :)

I did a throw away bid on a Bernina on ebay almost forgot about it and won it!

It's a Nova which I think is a 900, paint and body and case look in decent nick but no manual and not many accessories.

Guess we'll see what turns up!
