 Hi All,

I thought I'd do this in case you havent encountered a potted motor before.

These are a little niche and are an early direct drive, so there is a gear rather than a belt and the wiring is more internal.

I have a 201 with a potted motor so I'll show you the important external differences:
First is the front... Notice the built the light that is on the front of the machine, the wiring goes through the machine.

Second is the back:

notice the cute little bump on the back with a decal on the top - thats the motor.

Internally there is a worm gear that is driven by the motor, and drives the machine directly - so even by 201 standards these machines are supposed to be exceptionally smooth and have strong penetration because theres no belt to slip or lose traction with.

Also there are 2 tubes at the back (with large screms over them) that have wicks in them the wicks transport lube to the work gear. the best lube for this is vaseline or petroleum jelly. The lube need to melt as the machine gets hot for the wick to work and modern lubes are too stable.

These wicks usually need replacing (mine were hard, gummed up and black) - Sew Classic in the USA has the wicking material
The electrics on these machine - are very worth checking and getting PAT tested as they are internal on a cast iron machine.. Shocking!

thats a very smart looking 201! nice find. at least the 3 pin plugs arent too hard to come by and you can put a new pedal on it!

its also worth checking that the needle is correctly seated and the right way round... I lent a 401 to a friend and they were complaining about its stitch quality - the needle was the wrong way round. They thought it was tension or timing...

I teach my kids to sew (sometimes) on a elna grasshopper with a too loose belt- it stops them over accelerating, its a tiny machine so not daunting and the knee lever is perfect for them because they can use it with their raised chairs... they love it, and they helped me clean it up. :)

Hi,
Any chance of a picture? I think I know which one you mean but a picture would really help!

Thank you!

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Bernina 530-2 £120? Ono
« on: January 05, 2020, 12:08:15 PM »
Hi all,

I’m considering selling my bernina 530-2 it does a range of stitches, has been serviced and has a lot of parts.

It’s a gorgeous machine and a real sweet heart but I just don’t love her...  :(

I’m norfolk based and collection is probably best, or courier, postal services seem quite heavy handed but I do have the restraining bolts.

Let’s know if you’re interested? There’s more pics in a gallery if you’d like a look.

Vintage Machines / Re: Old Viking won't zig-zag

my 500 wasnt very good at zigzagging when I got it - once I opened it, I found it was a ton of of thread and grot in the swing needle mechanism,

If the machine is all metal its probably fixable - if its got plastic parts these may have completely broken or worn...

Tell them not to watch the needle going up and down - it knows what to do and doesn't need supervision. Whilst they're watching the needle the stitching line is all over the place!

and you can impale your finger!

When I was taught, we took the manual and the teacher had a list of common uses and we worked out to get them, so we did buttons, buttonholes, straight and curved hems, appliqué, elastic, straight line quilting, a range of pattern stitches, made a small cushion case, a zipped quilted purse. And of course starting and ending sewing... we also wanted to look at double needle sewing but didn’t get to it...

Fun with Fabric / Re: Sewing with Silk Fabric - tips please

You could look at a second hand sari... the colours are often vibrant but it can be a good way to get a lot of silk.

There are a lot of good options in the vintage machine lines Singers are always a good option 201ks are excellent 15ks are rumoured to have been originally demonstrated sewing tin cans... a 99k might be a good option too if youre looking for something compact.

Pfaffs are also excellent for tougher fabrics the Pfaff 30 is a fab machine

There are also some cheaper industrial machines 95k for example ... check the motor is good for 220-240 or 230v

The vintage machine market is very variable - ebay tends to be an expensive source... Facebook market place or gumtree are good I've had some amazing bargains from these or local auctions - but the machines can be a little unloved.
