Title: Anyone up for a quick and easy project??
Post by: Iminei on November 05, 2021, 07:34:12 AM
I have a 'project' in mind and wonder if we have enough Darksiders interested in making a lil something for one of our TSPers ???

One block (depending on how many volunteer) and I'll bring it all together .... Any takers?

Hellooooooooooo!
Rather than start a whole new thread for the sake of one piddly question, I'll ask here.
Am I right in thinking that a 'block' is made up from a backing layer to which all sorts of weird and wonderful shapes are sewn onto having been pieced into some resemblance of a pattern?
I assume that no wadding is required from each of us otherwise they'd all be different materials and weights and as such will be added by the boss (Iminei) along with the backing to the final 'project' ?
Does one add their own quarter inch for piecing so making each block actually 12 1/2" or 8 1/2" square?
Does my lack of block making experience scare the rest of you?

Errrrm its starting to ..... :S

Bill

A block is just one layer of fabric. Different fabrics cut to the desired shape and then pieced together to make a block.  No wadding or back layer.  :)

Starryfish and Bjay ... you're in ... preliminarily.

Everyone has got to think long and hard about commiting to this .... To the timeline, to getting the blocks to me by the end of November at the very latest and to doing their very best work.

I want blocks that are sewn well to the correct size and pressed nicely.

Sorry to be a Sergeant Major about this but it will make assembly so much easier.

Ive made a couple of blocks .. as many of you know Im not really a pastel/floral girl so my choices were quite limited But I will let you have a look and see whether one is too 'bright' or it would fit in to the general brief ... this would also give you all a lot more freedom with colours as the one is not so pastel but still (I hope) far from Primary and in your face.

More in a bit, with hopefully a Poll to see which we prefer.

Then I will release a tutorial in the Darkside tutorials... Please do read through and if you are not 100% sure of anything, practice with some gash fabrics before starting on the real thing.
Title: Re: Anyone up for a quick and easy project??
Post by: Iminei on November 07, 2021, 13:56:46 PM
The Poll is up ... The linky to the pics is in a PM sent to you by 2pm today.

You have ONE vote, You cant change your vote
You will see the result after you have voted.

Also any ideas for an alternative block that is  suitable for all skill levels please pm .

Post by: Lowena on November 07, 2021, 14:02:36 PM
@Iminei I think I'd better withdraw. My work will probably not be up to the standard you require and my sizing can be a bit hit or miss.
I'm feeling very stressed at the moment and think that such exacting requirements will only make me feel worse.
I'd rather not start than let you down with the quality of my block....even though I have ordered the white on white fabric.
Sorry I fall short of the mark.......
Title: Re: Anyone up for a quick and easy project??
Post by: Iminei on November 07, 2021, 14:26:43 PM
If you absolutely must @Lowena  ... tho I have seen your work and you do excel at Square in Square blocks.

This is not meant to stress anyone out and is a very simple block ... just a lil attention is required to cutting and piecing.

Lowena let me know for sure if you dont wish to continue ... I know we will all be sad if you dont (I just know you have a sumptuous stash of batiks somewhere)
Title: Re: Anyone up for a quick and easy project??
Post by: Lowena on November 07, 2021, 14:38:45 PM
@Iminei having seen the blocks I will definitely take part
I don't know what I was expecting but that'll be absolutely fine.
Sorry to be a pain........ <3

I was just going to add ... you could always make a block (or two) and see how it comes out ...

And ... Im finally sewing again!

BTW ... theres one of your Christmas? Birthday? batiks in one of those blocks there ... Gorgeous!  :loveit:

Ok ... just 2 havent voted and we have a majority of 11 liking the both ...

so we'll mix it up ...

Contemporary or more traditional floral centres with colours to suit but PLEASE  ... No in your face Bright Solid Primaries !!!

I'll send you all a link to the tutorial in a PM ....

As ever click on the I icon (top left corner) on your laptop, 3 bars/buttons on a phone to bring up the destructions to the side of each individual pic.

Please DO READ through  the WHOLE tutorial before you start to cut or sew, especially if you are relatively new to The Darkside and if you are at all unsure PRACTICE with some unimportant fabric.

Accurate cutting and good pressing will help soooo much ... and do remember that White on White fabric is printed with a plasticised substance that shows pin holes more than a woven fabric and can discolour if pressed with a very hot iron.

@Iminei can the final border be a light floral or does it have to be more of a solid?

I'm away on holiday from 10-20 November, but will have a sewing week (without OH around) from 21-27 November.
I will make the test blocks and actual block that week before I do my other planning sewing.

Slightly confused about the white on white fabric. Do we all have to use it? I don't have a large stash and there isn't any in it.
Title: Re: Anyone up for a quick and easy project??
Post by: Sheilago on November 08, 2021, 13:51:03 PM
@Iminei can the final border be a light floral or does it have to be more of a solid?

I hope patterned is ok for the border as only one of my four border fabrics is a true solid and the block is in the post now!  :o
Title: Re: Anyone up for a quick and easy project??
Post by: Iminei on November 08, 2021, 16:06:26 PM
@Sheilago  ... @Diane  ... as long as it reads as a colour that's fine ... you will see in the  traditional block that the darker green I chose in the end is actually a patterned fabric

@Starryfish  ... I shall send you some if you'd like ? I have your address.

We've all voted and the result is that a mix is fine. Just please make sure your coloured fabrics arent in your face primaries!

Feeling left out. All this secrecy. All these questions. All this lack of inclusion.

Anyone else tempted to vote? Simply because it's there on your page telling you to "vote"?

Anyone else thinking of (only half joking) sending @Iminei your address so the finished project comes to where it's badly needed?

Anyone else having a really crummy day?

Rambling for little or no reason?

Was missing one colour so went to new local quilt shop and bought 4 pieces which will be useful for something else as well, at least that's my excuse.

Its so lovely to have a quilt shop I can actually go in, with a lovely owner and beautiful stock.

Just hope it succeeds as she is putting a great deal of effort into it, not to mention the cost of the stock.

I planned to post mine today but as yesterday was a holiday the post office was operating reduced hours today and was closed by 10am. - Go figure. I'm assuming it won't be open tomorrow either as Thursday was a holiday.

Tip: In France if a holiday day falls on a Thursday then you can pretty much wipe out Friday, Sat and Sun and if it falls on a Tuesday then wipe out Sat Sun and Mon. Of course with a Tuesday hol there is always the possibility that Wednesday won't see much happening in various businesses as Wednesday is a half day at school ( don't have children? doesn't matter - it;s the half day that counts).

Then of course many enterprises are closed on Monday should they have had the bad luck to work on Saturday. And of course no one works on a Sunday apart from private -owned business in small towns up to midday and then only food related, apart from the 4 weeks preceeding Xmas when they are all allowed to be open with a prefectorial decree agreement!  Hope this helps! Oh yes and don't forget - stand close to the wall at midday or else you can be cruched in the stampede to get out and on the way home for the 2 hour lunch break.

@Ploshkin I only got the remainder of my fabric yesterday and when I got home I had some garden stuff to take care of, then I decided late pm wasn't a good time to start.  This morning was booster jab time and I'm just home again.  Hoping to get to it this weekend.  I'm almost hoping that we don't have good weather so that I can stay inside.

Mine's correctly labelled @Iminei.  There are some beautiful colour choices there - the resulting masterpiece will be amazing!

Not at all @Starryfish  you should see the mangled envelope it arrived in

everybody's block needed a good press ... What Im most pleased at is that everyone took my 'best work and best pressing' seriously ... and, so far,  there's only been one block with flipped seams ... Bravo!
